Scans of Marshall County Mirror - Commencement 1941 issue

Hello, folks. I am not actively researching but my sister asked me to scan some documents that our late mother had retained. One of these was her graduation "yearbook", the Marshall Mirror from Spring of 1941, "Commencement". Don't know if this will help anyone with family tree, but there is some interesting/gossipy information and photos of about 50 seniors from Marshall County High School, Lewisburg Tennessee, 1941.

To view:

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/sredir?uname=jeffrey.g.cowell...

e-mail me at jeffrey.g.cowell@gmail.com if you are having any trouble.

Thanks for the information. It seems we are working on the same family. There are so many with the same name it can get confusing.I had the same trouble with my Gragg family but I finally got them sorted out all the way back to Ireland.James Gragg and Maggie Clark are also at head springs.Maybe we will eventually get it straightened out!

I thought my Dorcas was dau. of Irwin McAdams and Dorcas McLean but it seems she married John Leonard. Also I am confused by the census records.1860 has Dorcas McLain as head of house with kids:Mary,Dorcas,John,Nancy and Margaret.1870 hasa Mary McLain b.1830 as head of house and then 1880 has Margaret C. McLain as mother with kids :John,Nancy and Margaret with Cavender grandchildren.I discovered dau. Nancy married and divorced Joseph Calvin Cavender.I wonder if the children belong to Margaret Caroline McAdams and Nathaniel McLean who married in 1848.The dau Dorcas b.1851 married Alfred Clark.Their dau.Maggie married James William Gragg and they in turn had my ggrandmother Bertha.

Pam, in the Marshall Co. Historical Quarterly, Summer 1976, Vol.xvii No.ii, it has Dorcas b. 1806 never married. In the 1860 she is living with her sister-in-law Nancy. In the 1870 and 1880 cencus she is in the household of her sister Matilda and her husband James Neill. Dorcus's parents were Jesse and Nancy Peyton Mclain. Hope this helps. Although it doesn't seem to be your Dorcus.

Ella Gay Luna and Etta Luna were twins, born 30 Sep 1870, Marshall Co., Tenm., the 9th and 10th children of Peter Luna (4th) and Margaret A. Neill. Ella md. 10 Mar 1887, Marshall Co., Tenn., to Rufus A. Murdock. They had eight children. Ella died 23 Dec. 1957, Naples, Morris Co., Texas, and was buried in Sand Hill Cem., Simms, Bowie Co., Texas.
Etta Luna (not to be confused with the Etta Luna who md Andrew Gregg; she is a distant cousin to your Etta), probably died abt 1898, after giving birth to three children. She md. 15 apr. 1888, Marshall Co., Tenn., to Julius Edward Nix, b. 1 June 1871, Tenn., d. 22 Jan. 1961, Kaufman Co., Texas. His parentage is unknown to me. He md. (2) 13 Aug. 1899, Hunt Co., Texas, to Araminta Rambo. I was unaware of the 2 sons you listed for them. I know they had a daughter, Mrs. Irene (Nix) Bloodworth, b.3 June 1901, probably Hunt co., Texas, and d. 3 Jan. 1970, Dallas, Texas, bur, Honey Grove, Texas.
I am Les Waltman of Enterprise, Alabama, a Luna researcher since 1959. My great great great grandmother was Elizabeth Ann Luna, 1828-1902, a niece of the previously mentioned Peter Luna and therefore an older first cousin to Ella and Etta.

Hi,

I am related to Jessie McLain and Nancy Payton via daughter Levina McLain born Jan. 27, 1810 in TN and died in Marshall Co., TN Aug. 22, 1888. She had a sister named Dorcas Tennessee McLain. I had estimated her birth year as 1815 but she could have very well have been born in 1820. If this fits your family, I have more information on her parents.

Tom Street tomstreet@prodigy.net

According to p254-255 of The Fisher Scrap Book by William L. JONES, James DARK & Sarah W. FISHER moved to Johnson Co. IL in 1854 & moved to Hollow Rock, Carroll Co. TN abt 1869 and James died soon after. Sarah married a Mr. BUFORD. However, I was not able to find a marriage record to BUFORD or find them in 1880 census. I did find a marriage record for Sarah W. DARK to James D. DUKE for 24 Sept 1872 in Benton Co. TN. Sarah DARK & son John were living in Benton Co. in 1870. John mar. Mary E. SWIFT 22 nov 1869 in Benton Co. There were no other DARK family in Benton Co in 1870.
J.D. DUKE and wife S.W were in Dist 16, Carroll Co. TN in 1880 & S.W. was born abt 1824, which is abt when Sarah W. FISHER DARK was born. J.D DUKE was age 85 in 1880, so its possible he died and Sarah married again, but I didn't find her in 1900 (& she would have been 76). There are not very meny Carroll Co. cemeteries online & I was unable to find any DARK or DUKE or BUFORD in the ones that are.

The Elizabeth I have was b. ca. 1850, give or take. Or can anybody head me to the right line.

Thanks-

Cherilyn TRusty
Martha Jane (Goodwin) Jackson (b. 1834, TN), daughter of Peter G.W. & Mary Goodwin?

William B.P. Jackson (b. 1857, TN; d. 1911, MO), a son of Civil War veteran (15th NC Infantry) William Sherwood Jackson and his first wife, Ann J. (Collins) Jackson, was my mother’s maternal grandfather.

The head of this household in Scott Township, Sharp County, Arkansas, in 1880 was Martha Jane (Goodwin) Jackson, the second wife and widow of William Sherwood Jackson. I know very little about her.

JACKSON Martha J. Head Widowed Female White 46 TN VA TN Keeping House
JACKSON Terry H. Son Single Male White 18 NC NC TN Farmer
JACKSON Mary M. Daughter Single Female White 16 TN NC TN Without Occupation
JACKSON Hilry [Hillery] H. Son Single Male White 14 TN NC TN Farming*
JACKSON Anna K.T. Daughter Single Female White 12 TN NC TN Keeping House

Terry, Mary, Hillery, and Anna are children of William Sherwood Jackson and Martha Jane (Goodwin) Jackson. By 1880, William B.P. Jackson, who had come to Arkansas from Bedford County, Tennessee, with his father William, full brother Elisha, stepmother Martha Jane, and half siblings, was married and living in Black River Township, Independence County, Arkansas. The family had made the move to Arkansas not long before William Sherwood Jackson died there in February 1879.

Trying to learn more about Martha Jane (Goodwin) Jackson, I searched census records from Tennessee. I think I found her at age 16 in this household in Dwelling 116, Civil District 15, Marshall County, Tennessee, in 1850:

GOODWIN Peter G.W. 36 Male Farmer VA
GOODWIN Mary 37 Female TN
GOODWIN Martha 16 Female TN
GOODWIN Terry 15 Male TN
GOODWIN Elizabeth 10 Female TN
GOODWIN Hannah 9 Female TN
GOODWIN Bailey 7 Male TN
GOODWIN Sanona [sp?] 4 Female TN
GOODWIN Tennessee 3 Female TN

By 1860, Martha was gone from Peter G.W. Goodwin’s Civil District 15 (Lewisburg Post Office), Marshall County, household:

GOODWIN P.G.W. 46 Male White Farmer VA
GOODWIN Mary 46 Female White Housekeeper TN
GOODWIN Elizabeth B. 20 Female White Domestic VA
GOODWIN Hannah S. 18 Female White Domestic TN
GOODWIN Bailey P. 16 Male White Farm Laborer TN
GOODWIN Margaret S. 14 Female White TN
GOODWIN Tennessee A. 12 Female White TN
GOODWIN Virginia P. 9 Female White TN

By 1860, Martha had married William Sherwood Jackson and was with him in this Civil District 15 (Lewisburg Post Office), Marshall County, household:

JACKSON W.S. 28 Male White Hotel Keeper NC
JACKSON Martha J. 26 Female White TN
JACKSON James W. 8 Male White NC
JACKSON Elisha 6 Male White TN
JACKSON W.A. 5 Male White TN
JACKSON Wm. Belle Daughter Single Female White 9 AR TN TN
GOODWIN Mary M. Daughter Single Female White 5 AR TN TN
GOODWIN Terry F. Son Single Male White 3 AR TN TN
GOODWIN Emma A. Daughter Single Female White 4/12 AR TN TN

Was Bailey Goodwin a brother of Martha Jane (Goodwin) Jackson? Their nativity data on the 1880 census match: born TN; father born VA; mother born TN.

Were Bailey Goodwin and Martha Jane (Goodwin) Jackson children of Peter G.W. and Mary Goodwin?

Was Bailey Goodwin’s full name Bailey Peyton Goodwin?

Some accounts list William B.P. Jackson’s full name as William Bailey Patton Jackson, but I believe he was William Bailey Peyton Jackson. Like many Middle Tennessee men of his time, I believe William was named to honor attorney Balie Peyton (1803-1878), two-term U.S. Representative from Tennessee, Mexican War veteran, and U.S. Minister to Chile, who was born and died near Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee. Baile Peyton’s name appears often in historical accounts as “Bailey Peyton.”

*Hillery Jackson’s nativity data, as reflected correctly on the 1900 census of his household in Black River Township, Independence County, Arkansas, should be “TN NC TN,” not “NC NC TN.” In 1900, Hillery’s widowed mother Martha Jane (b. March 1834, TN; 6 children/5 living) resided in his Black River Township household. Besides Terry, Mary, Hillery, and Anna, I can’t fully account for the two other children that the 1900 census reports as having been born to Martha Jane (Goodwin) Jackson. One may have been the nine-month-old girl, B.D.A. Jackson, listed in W.S. Jackson’s Marshall County household in 1860. If she lived, she would have been of marriageable age (17-18) around the time the family moved to Arkansas from Tennessee. Perhaps she had married and stayed in Tennessee?

The land grant was located near Wilson's Creek. I assume that Jonathan received the land grant for his service to North Carolina during the Revolutionary War.

From online I have "Eli" Cheek b abt 1795 married to Susan Bills b abt 1797 in NC. but in the will it says wife Elisabeth.

Could Susan Bills have been a 1st wife? Do you know Elisha's wife's name that was said to be Indian?

My family also said we were Cherokee. But I haven't found a hint until now. So I didn't know which gr gr gr grandparent was Cherokee descent. (my gr grandmother said she was a quarter).

I am descended from William Bills, who was Garsham Bills brother. Garsham is sometimes spelled Gersham. I noticed a similar name on this thread. Susan Bills is Garsham's daughter. William and Garsham's parents were Deborah Denman and Daniel Bills.

As she is my only connection, so far, to the Cheek family, I am wondering if the Bills are my elusive Cherokee line. The Bills moved from Surry/Yadkin Co NC about 1810-1820 to Maury/Bedford/Marshall Co TN. Then my Jennings ancestors moved from Marshall TN to Greene Co MO about 1852. Greene is adjacent to Dallas where Elisha died 1858.

On the censuses Native Americans were often listed as black. But the history you gave specifically says Octoroon. And white wife.

I have turned every stone, pebble, and grain of sand looking for this conncection. Now I'm chasing atoms. LOL.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Do you have any sources?

Maylene
I found a marriage contract of Etta Luna and Edward on 2 Apr 1888 in Marshall County, Tennessee on ancestry.com/ I am the great-granddaughter of Etta Luna and Julius Edward Nix. They had three children: Myrtle Duanna Nix (my grandmother), born 30 Jul 1889 in Marshall County, Tennessee, Elbert L. Nix born Aug 1895 in Texas, Mary Lucile Nix born 23 Oct 1898 in Dulaney Community, Hunt County, Texas. I am not sure what happened to Etta Luna Nix. My Aunt Bea, Myrtle's daughter, said Etta Luna Nix died. I know that Julius E Nix is in the 1900 Census with new wife Aramenta S, and daughter Myrtle and son, Elbert Nix. Julius and Aramenta haven't been married a year yet in this census. Aramenta had no living children at the time. Just down below in the same census is (Mary)Lucile Nix, she is living with William and Melissa Frazier as an adopted daughter. Her birthdate is listed as Oct 1898. I think Araminta's maiden name was Rambo. Julius Edward Nix and Aramenta Rambo Nix had Elvin L. Nix born 17 Oct 1914 and Horace Nix born 1917 in Texas. I attended Elvin L. Nix' funeral on 12 Feb 1983 in Sweetwater, Texas. I don't know if there was another Etta Luna but Etta had a twin sister named Ella G. Luna who married Rupert (Rufus) Murdock on 07 Mar 1887 in Marshall County, Tennessee. I don't know for sure if Etta married Andy Gregg. It would have had to be soon after the birth of Mary Lucille Nix in 23 Oct 1898. The dates don't match. I hope this helps. Cynthia

I am not related to the Williams family, but I am working with an elderly researcher who is descended from the half-brother of Sarah Hill who married Peter Williams. In the process of helping out, I have acquired a lot of information about Isaac H. Williams.

If this is your family, I will be happy to share what I have.

Janice
