Hi. I'm looking for information on one of my great-grandfather's sisters, Cordelia Wood. I think she may have gone by "Delia" - some even called her "aunt Deecee". She was the daughter of W. A. Wood of the Adair community in Madison County in the mid-late 1800's. I have some obscure information on her and am trying to verify it. She is said to have married a man whose last name was either "Powell" or "Howell" and then is said to have moved to Medina, and at some point her husband tried to poison her she moved out. That's all the info I have on her so far - I don't know her death date or place of burial. If anyone knows anything, please let me know. Thanks very much.

She was the daughter of George and Mary Todd. Her sister Elizabeth married Adam Huntsman and when he died their two children Adam and Paradise Huntsman were living with the McNeill's. Another daughter Susan married a McIver.

Does anyone have history on these families?

Family of James P. Butler & Mary L. Butler, 1840s through 1870s

I have been studying a very interesting mid-19th Century Jackson, TN family, the family of James (1814-1877) and Mary (1819-1878) Butler. They appear to be unrelated to the more numerous and more prosperous family of Dr. William Edward Butler. James P. Butler was a saddler by trade, as shown by the 1850 and 1860 US Censuses.

I have been unable to find any information on the NC origins or the burial places of James and Mary, or the deaths and burial places of their 5 children (Artemissa b1838, Araminta Paralee b 1840, Edith A. b 1842, John b 1845, Mary C. b 1847, and Henry b 1854). I would especially like to know the burial place of my ancestor, their daughter, Araminta Paralee Butler McMillan, who last appears in the 1870 Census living in Jackson, TN with her husband, John H. McMillan, 3 of their small children and 3 small Cockrill children. The 1880 Census of Jackson shows that her husband John H. McMillan remarried in 1871, so Araminta must have died in the years 1870-1871.

The Cockrill children in the 1870 Census may have been the children of Mrs. W. G. Cockrill, who was reported to have died of consumption in 1877, and whose maiden name was McMillen (maybe a spelling variant of McMillan?).

I have searched the on-line listings of graveyards of Madison County with no results for any of these Butlers. I was more successful with John H. McMillan and his second wife, Mary Spah McMillan, who with her sister and parents are all buried in Riverside Cemetery in Jackson. Perhaps some of them moved away.

Araminta Butler McMillan's younger sister, Mary C. Butler Jacobs, was a graduate of the Memphis District Female Acad. and is last mentioned in the 1880 census living with her husband George Jacobs and a daughter, Warthenia (b 1878).

The will of James P. Butler’s wife Mary (1877) names their youngest son Henry Butler has her executor. Henry and his wife Anna had one daughter, Ada Belle (b 1879), but I haven't been able to trace her.

Other missing threads are those of the two younger children of John H. McMillan and Araminta Butler McMillan's, Mary A. McMillan Jacobs (b 1866) and R.H. McMillan (a boy b 1869). Mary A. McMillan married William C. Diffee, and their three daughters are mentioned in their step-grandmother, Mary Spah McMillan's will.

I would appreciate any assistance. I have further information if anyone is interested in collaborating.
I am desperately searching for these two cemeteries and am pretty sure they are either in Crockett, Madison or Gibson County. My family lived in the area where these 3 counties meet and I find information in all 3 counties of my family. Both cemeteries were in existence in the mid 1940's. My great grandparents' death certificates states they are buried at these cemeteries but my searches have turned up nothing. Varney Jines was buried at Dunagan and Cynthia Jines was buried at Climer. If anyone has any information on either of these cemeteries please contact me.

Col. James Monroe TROUTT, 1883-1951, born Jackson, Madison, TN

I am researching Col. James Monroe TROUTT, born 22 Jul 1883 in Jackson, Madison, TN, died 30 Jun 1951 in Knoxville, Knox, TN, and is buried in Lynhurst Cemetery in Knoxville. James graduated from Vanderbilt University Medical School in June 1906, and by 18 Jun 1906 had been certified to practice medicine in Jackson, Madison, TN.

Sometime after 1910, James joined the US Army as career officer in the Medical Corps, where he served as a surgeon at Fort Sill, OK; the Army and Navy General Hospital in Hot Springs, Garland, AR; and at the Army Hospital in Honolulu. James retired at the rank of Colonel.

In about 1908, James married Jessie B. unknown (perhaps SPARKS???), born 29 Apr 1883 in Knoxville, died sometime after 1951, perhaps in Knoxville. They had at least two children, Clay B. TROUTT b. 8 Jun 1912 in Jackson, Madison, TN, and James M. TROUTT, III, born 9 Nov 1912 in Knoxville, Knox, TN.

James Monroe TROUTT died 30 Jun 1951, Knoxville, Knox, TN. He was an accomplished surgeon, with articles published on blood transfusion procedures and similar medical issues.

My research problem is that his parents are reported as “Judge J.M. TROUTT” and wife Miranda PROVINCE. I have not been able to identify this couple in census or any other records, and accordingly, cannot determine Judge J. M. TROUTT’s full name or his ancestral line. Since Dr. TROUT had a son James Monroe TROUTT, III, it can be assumed that the Judge was also a James Monroe TROUTT.

Can some kind soul shed any light on the full name and ancestry of “Judge J.M. TROUTT,” as well as any additional information on wife Miranda PROVINCE? There may be an obituary, vertical file, or biography in some local Knoxville and/or Jackson repository.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
Craig H. Trout

Loudoun County, VA

This is an update to my query from June, 2001 to let everyone know what messages work. Since I placed my message I have found numbers of the Johnson and Lester families as well as new cousins and through the kindness of people who live in Madison County, I have gotten more information than I ever dreamed was possible. My 92 year old father was so excited and so was his two brothers and a sister. I have sent them documents and info about the people that their father actually talked about and I would just like to thank everyone for their help.

I am trying to find information on a gr, gr, gr uncle. His name was John Calvin "Calvin" Williamson. He was born around 1872 probably in Hardin Co., TN. But they also lived around McNairy, Gibson, Chester and Henderson Counties. His parents were George W. and Talisa Elizabeth (Hopper) Williamson. I cannot find him on any census. The only record I have of him is a listing on his father's Civil War Pension Applicatn. He is listed on there with his siblings. I have been told by several family members that he went into the mountains one day and was never heard from again. If anyone has any information about him, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks
I am trying to find information on a George Williamson who was living in Madison County in the early 1800's. His wife's name was Caroline. He was originally from North Carolina. He had 5 sons named James O. K., Anthony, George, Nathan and William. George Williamson was the executor of the will of a Nathan W. Steadman. One of the he witnesses on the will was his son,James O. K. Williamson.
There is a Hopper Cemetery listed in Madison Co., Also. The Hoppere's buried there are related to me also. My gr, gr, grandmother, was Talisa E. Hopper, she married a George W. Williamson in 1866 in Hardin Co. TN. George and his father, William, who was my gr, gr, gr grandfather, were both in the Civil War (Union). They were living in Henderson Co., TN when they enlisted. A part of Henderson Co., was cut off and added to Madison Co. in 1808, Chester Co. in 1882, and Decatur Co., in 1843.
I found a George Williamson listed in the Williamson Cemetery in Madison Co., thanks to some very helpful genealogists, who was born in 1818. It shows the wife or consort's? name as Amy. The name Stedman is listed there too. I would appreciate any information on these Williamson's. I am trying to find out if they are connected to my Williamson family that was in that area. Thanks.
Charlotte

Reuben Hail was listed as a witness to the marriage of John Spencer and Martha Taylor in 1831in Madison County, TN.. (later Reuben Hail married a Martha Taylor in MO in 1839--don't think it is the same Martha.) In 1832 in Madison County Jesse Stubbs was a witness to the marriage of William Harrison and Melinda Ragsdale. (Reuben Hail was next door to Jesse Stubbs in the 1850 census of Greene-Christian County, Missouri--Reuben named his youngest son, Jesse Stubbs Hail). John T. Bowls(Boals) married Rachel Stubbs on 9 August 1831 in Madison County(John T. Boals later moved to Greene-Christian County, MO where he served with Reuben Hail as a Justice of the Peace and where they both signed legal documents for each other. I am hoping that in Madison County, Tennessee, there are documents that tell who the parents are of Rueben Hail. Reuben was listed (spelled "Rheuben Hale") as the parent of 4 children in the school of District 2 of Madison County, TN, on 28January 1838. Please contact me if you know who the parents are of Reuben Hail. Thank you. brian in springfield mo

He married and had at least 6 children, the oldest being James.
Newton was "pistol shot" while on duty as a law officer in Jackson, Tennessee. He and an infant son, that died 2 days before his murder, are buried in an unmarked grave in Jackson's Riverside Cemetery. What happened to his family? Where is his son James?
Liberty Methodist Church Cemetery info and partial pics

I recently returned from a trip to Tennessee where we made a quick trip out to Liberty Methodist Church. As is usually the case, I did not have time to take pictures of every tombstone, but I did take pictures of the following:

RH Andrews, Celia Andrews, Claudie Andrews, Elizabeth Andrews Elliot, TW Elliot, TJ and Stella Ewell, and JB Ewell.

The pictures can be found at:
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/donnasfam/album?.dir=/6731&amp...

There are also pictures of the sign, where the church once stood and an overall picture of the cemetery. You will need to click on the individual pictures to see all the information transcribed due to the way Yahoo lets you put titles on them.

Additionally, I pinpointed it on GPS (to help those of us who are not so familiar with the Madison County Country Roads) to N 35.66051, W 88.64841 (accurate within 21 feet).

Lastly, I want to commend Ms. Presley and the Liberty Cemetery Association for their wonderful upkeep of the Cemetery. The church is now gone and these wonderful folks feared the cemetery would fall into disrepair so they began caring for it. They do accept donations to help out their project. If anyone wants the address, I can provide it.

If anyone has any questions, please reply to this message, the Madison County mailing list, or myself directly.

Donna
I recently found an index for Hays Chapel Cemetery located somewhere near Mercer, Madison County, TN. And, as such, I finally located the burial location of my Great-Great Grandparents! I would really like to have photos of their tombstones. If there is anyone in the area that would be willing to do this, please let me know! Their names are:

Anthony Baker, d. 1898
Mary E. Baker, d. 1896

Sincerely,

LaDonna Baker
George M. Robinson - Madison County, TN

I am looking for information on George M. Robinson b. abt 1820 in North Carolina. He is listed on the 1870 Madison County Census, District 15. He is listed as G.M. Robinson. His wife is E.H. A cousin who has now passed away said his wife is Harriet. They have triplet boys 4 years old in 1870. George is the father of my great grandfather John R. Robinson who married Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Crow. John and Mollie are married but living in the household with George and Harriet. I am told by family members that Harriet is John's step mother so I'm trying to find out who George was married to before Harriet. George and John are listed in the 1870 census with the occupation of "Butcher". Any help would be most appreciated.

I am looking for any family of Andrew J. Wise and Nancy Stricklind or Hamilton Sanders and Docia Stricklind. Andrew and Nancy had two known daughters, Sarah and Dove. Hamilton and Docia's children are John R., James, Levi C., Elijah B. and Sallie B. They lived in Madison County around the 1880 Census. Family lore has it Nancy Strickind and Hamilton Sanders died some time before or around 1900. Most of both families then moved to Greene County, Arkansas around 1900 and I am Andrew's ggranddaughter. We would like to know more of their life in Tennessee. One question in particular is, Who was Andrew's parents? Another is, Do we still have part of our family around Madison County? If you know anything about our family please let us know.

(Foster) Rose, specifically speaking, Floyd A., born around 1925, married Laquita, and had at least two children, Kevin and Angela Rose and Doris (Rose) Young, born 1930 or after (I think), who married and had at least two children, Robert Lloyd and Eric Foster Young.

Mrs. Doris (Rose) Young was a resident of Jackson in 1992 and then lived at 15 Birchwood, #4.

These families are descendants of Richmon Frank and Mary Jane (McGuire) Foster of Coffee Co., TN. Doris (Rose) Young was, I believe, once active in the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which she joined by virtue of the service of Joseph McGuire, her great-grandfather, who died in the Battle of Chickamauga.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Greg Keeling
President, Coffee Co.

My Neill ancestors were on the 1830 census as living in Madison County, Tennessee. They were: Gilbreath Neill b. ca 1770: James Neill b. ca 1775; Joseph Neill b. ca 1790; and Joseph A. Sturdevant b. ca 1804 All had families with them Andrew and Oren NeillJohn A. Gurley ofMt. Gileal Chyrch 1820 will of Andrew and Nancy Neill. Gilbreath and Margaret Neill were all on the 1830 and 1740 census and deed records. I am writing a book about my Neills and Larues and their spouses and much of that hinges on Madison County, TN data from their lives here in Madison County.

My ancestor Lt. Gilbreath Falls Neill inherited a lot of land from his wather, andrew and much of tht land was in what was THEN Madison County, TN which may or may not have the same locations now as then.
James Randall Vann's 2nd Wife Helen

Seeking any morsels of info on 2nd wife of James Randall Vann. JRV, b. after 1810, d. 1890 married(2nd wife) Helen Cromedy according to one Madison County source I've found. I believe that would be Helen (Doane) Cromartie, b. 1822 in Cypress Creek Township, Bladen County, NC, d. before 1877 probably in Madison County, TN. Helen was a daughter of Peter Patrick Cromartie and Sarah Boone Sessions, my great, great grand parents.

"Cromedy" is a phonetic representation of Cromartie. Helen's sister Sarah Cromartie, wife of J. Pickney Beck of Carroll and Grenada Counties, Mississippi died in 1860 after her father visited both sisters. Helen had other Cromartie descendant relatives(Aunts and cousins) who lived in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama; Shaws, Comptons, Owens, Wrights, Curries, Hen(d)rys and Tuckers to name a few.

The 1860 visit of Great Great Grandpa Peter is recounted(with typos) on page 9 of the booklet titled The William Cromartie Family. The booklet was first published in the 1930's by the Cromartie Clan Reunion . The data in the booklet was compiled by Elizabeth Janet Black, spinster sister of my Grand Mother Anna Isabella "Annie Belle/Annabelle" Black Cromartie(Mrs. Angus).

My great-grandmother, Rosanna (Ellison) Johnson, was born in 1833 in Maury County. In the 1850 census of Madison County, Tennessee she was living with her uncle, Benjamin M.(Miller?)Kilpatrick. Goodspeed's 1889 History says she was raised by her uncle, Miller Kilpatrick. Her father was Hugh Ellison. Not much else is known. Looking for Rosanna's mother's name and more about Hugh. She married my great grandfather, John Johnson, in Ark. in 1853.

OSBORNE & RUTHERFORD

My primary search is the RUTHERFORD surname, but I haven't been so fortunate with it, hence the search for OSBORNE.

I know these two families are linked by marriage so maybe searching through the OSBORNE's I will find the RUTHERFORD's.

Both families lived in the Medina/Oakfield areas of Madison County. Many of the OSBORNE's are buried in Oakfield Cemetery and also the small cemetery atop the hill on Old Medina Road across from Hopper Barker Road. I don't know the relationship between any of these OSBORNE's.

The names I know who are definetly related to the RUTHERFORD's are (my mother recalls hearing her mother, a Rutherford before marriage, mention these names):

Noah Osborne, b. Aug. 24, 1899 d. June 1985
Eunice Osborne, (wife of Noah) b. Nov. 12, 1896 d. Feb. 1981
Kyre Osborne, b. April 13, 1912 d. Nov. 10, 1992
Louie Osborne, b. Jan. 8, 1911 d. Aug. 1978
Jesse Osborne, b. April 29, 1905 d. Jan. 1969
Robert Osborne, b. Jan. 4, 1902 d. Dec. 1977
Leonard Osborne, b. Oct. 18, 1891 d. Jan. 1982
Clarence Osborne, b. Jan. 28, 1902 d. March 1968
Bertha Osborne, b. Oct. 20, 1889 d. Jan. 1973

All these birth and death dates are from the Social Security Death Index and all were listed as living in Jackson, Medina, or Oakfield.

Any clues to any of these people are greatly appreciated!

Janis
