Stone and Castlebury families in mid to late 1800's

I am trying to see if anyone can help me with three people (surname Castlebury)that show up on the 1870 census with my Stone family. Their names are Sallie, Agnes and John.

Given the ages, it is most likely that Sallie is Agnes' and John's mother. Sallie Castlebury's occupation line reads "living in family".

I don't have the Castlebury name associated with this family otherwise, but Sallie is not old enough to be the head of household's mother but could be his sister? Melissa Stone is believed to have the maiden name of Denton - so this could be her sister? Could also possibly be her mother if she had remarried(given the 19 yr age difference, but I doubt it).

In District 23, Lincoln, TN the family list appears as:

Henry Stone (actually named Henley) - b. abt 1820 in Kentucky - farmer
Melissa Stone - b. abt 1830 in Georgia
Isaac Stone - b. 1849 in TN
John Stone - b. 1851 in TN
George Stone - b. 1862 In TN
Sarah Stone - b. 1867 in TN
Sallie Castlebury - b. 1811 in TN
John Castlebury - b. 1848 in GA
Agnes - b. 1850 in GA

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Trying to find person who entered information about the McGees. Particularly, Mary Elizabeth McGee (Bettie McGee) who was living on Rt. 2, in Kelso. She married Hugh W. Thompson (2nd wife, 1st wife Sarah Ann E. Noles). Hugh Blanton Thompson was the last child of Hugh and Bettie. According to the census records, there was an eldest son - Lonie or Lonnie Thompson born around 1865. I am trying to see if this the same person as my husbands grandfather, Samuel Lon Thompson. If Bruce Reedy or Time McGee still frequent this site, please let me know if you show any information on this family. I know that they lived in the Kelso and Mulberry areas. Hugh had two brothers - Francis A. Thompson (married to a Frances) and a Percival(?) Wilson Thompson. They were witnesses to the Civil War Pension #497 application that Bettie McGee submitted.

In 1900, Bettie says she is the mother of 8 children, 5 who are alive.
Also, whoever submitted information about the McGee's on this site, mentioned that there was a decendent of James S. Bates (married a McGee) who was still alive.
Would appreciate any information if possible.

B. Thompson
Fort Worth, Texas
N. S. B. RIVES, ex-member of the legislature and Democratic nominee for re-election, was probably fatally wounded by JAMES RUNTLY. The two men lived on adjoining farms and trouble arose over some hogs of Runtly’s breaking into the wheat fields of Rives and destroying part of the crop. Rives began the firing and had shot at BUNTLY / RUNTLY twice before he fired. Buntly only fired one shot, which took effect in Rives’ abdomen.

Lincoln County Families

I am trying to sort out a problem family. My ancestor Harriett Robinson m John T. Hardin in LCT. He brought her to Texas in hopes of curing her TB problem, but he was not successful. She was the daughter of Mildred Crowder and Henry Robinson. Several of their children died from TB. The problem? Is the Henry Robertson listed on the 1840 census for LCT his father? The name on the census for other years is Robison/Robisson, and finally by 1900 ca, Robinson. Harriett's name on her tombstone is Robinson.

In 1840, there is a male of the correct age to be her father, Henry (Jr?)in the Robertson household. His age is constant on all censuses for a birth year of 1809ca. The elder disappears before 1850 as far as I can tell. Since the name is so confused in many censuses, I am uncertain if this is his father or is it another family? With family names of children on other censuses, it's easy to find them. Does anyone have a source of info that might help?

Lolene

Lolene

Butler in Lincoln County

I may not have a lot to add to your direct line, but i think one of my line may be related to Joel and Catherine Butler.

I am descended from (2 ggrandfather) Geoge Ball Butler, b. abt. 1828 in SC. George's father appears to be Anthony G. Butler and mother to be Elizabeth Ball, daugh of George Ball of Laurens County SC. Either Anthony and Elizabeth or Elizabeth alone migrated from Laurens county to Lincoln County between George's birth and 1840, when Elizabeth appears alone on the Lincoln County census. George ended up being a Baptist preacher (at least a lay preacher) so I imagine the family was Baptist.

Anthony appears to have been an older widower (between 45 and 65 in 1820) before he married Elizbeth. I am still hunting down his family and other children he may have had, but I would imagine that he and Joel are related , perhaps as brothers.

I will keep my eye open for Joel while looking for Anthony and let you know if I come up with anything.

A horse and plow, so the story goes, which a farmer was using in his field, sank and disappeared in the earth, leaving a hole to which no bottom has yet been found, and in which the farmer himself came near falling. His neighbors were called to the place, who, by means of ropes, let him down in search of the horse and plow, to the depth of 40 to 50 feet, but the farther he went, the larger the hole appeared, and he called to his friends to pull him up, which they did. Several unsuccessful attempts were afterward made to fathom the hold. The horse and plow have “gone the way of all the earth.”

Macon Weekly Telegraph
Georgia
July 31, 1883
D. M.
The Montgomery Advertiser
Alabama
March 19, 1915
PITTS-WILLIAMS
Huntsville, Alabama, March 15: E. W. Mr. Pitts and bride left for a honeymoon trip of two weeks and will be at home at Pearl City after that time.

Dallas Morning News
Dallas, Texas
December 8, 1915
Dallas Social Affairs
Wedding Anniversary Celebrated
Mr. and Mrs. D. N. WAGGONER celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last night with a family dinner at their home, 4041 Cole Avenue. Of their seven children, four were present. These were Mrs. R. L. LIGON and J. F., W. C. and R. L.WAGGONER. The children who reside out of town are G. A. WAGGONER of Detroit, Michigan, Mrs. G. M. BUCK of Denver, Colorado and L. T. WAGGONER of Sacramento, California. Of the eight grandchildren, three were present, Mrs. JOHN W. LAKE, ERNEST LIGON and ANNIE LIGON. Mr. and Mrs. Waggoner were married at Mulberry, Lincoln County, Tennessee on December 7, 1865. They came to Texas in 1891, locating first in Denton County. They moved to Dallas about 14 years ago where they have made their home. Mr. Waggoner is 74 years old and Mrs. Waggoner is now in her 72nd year.

Dallas Morning News
Dallas, Texas
February 28, 1932
Much of West Texas History Centers Around Brownings, Pioneer Weatherford Family
Weatherford, Texas, Feb. 27: Married in August 1865, Mr. and Mrs. JOHN R. BROWNING of Weatherford have the distinction of having been married longer than any other couple in Parker County. But the Browning family’s laurels do not rest on that alone, for one of JACK BROWNING’S brothers, JAMES N. BROWNING, was a member of the Legislature, a district judge and lieutenant governor, and the other two brothers, W. L. “BUD” BROWNING and J. A. BROWNING, achieved prominence in the cattle business.

JOHN ROBERT BROWNING was born at Arkadelphia, Arkansas July 24, 1845. He was the son of WILLIAM F. and MARY BURK BROWNING. His father was a surveyor and a prominent man in the section where he lived. Mrs. J. R. Browning’s maiden name was LYDIA MONTGOMERY and she was born in Lincoln County, Tennessee October 14, 1845. Her father and four brothers were killed or died during the Civil War.

Mr. Browning enlisted in the Confederate Amy and served in the cavalry under the command of Gen. CABELL. He is now drawing a Confederate pension from the State of Texas.

“When we were married,” Mr. Browning said, “the only work in that part of the country you could get any money for was splitting rails, and I did not know how to do that. An old friend taught me and we got a job splitting 1000 oak rails which took about three days. My part amounted to $3.30, and it looked like a lot of money. I worked that fall for anything I could get to make a living and my wife was at home spinning, weaving and making our clothes. A little money went a long way. The next year we started farming.”

By 1871 the Brownings had accumulated enough worldly goods to start to Texas where Mr. Browning’s brothers had already gone. They were writing back of big money to be made in the cattle business.

The Brownings landed at Fort Griffin in Shackelford County, a wild frontier post, Federal soldiers being stationed there at the time. Many cowboys made that their quarters and Indians still raided this section of Texas.

JAMES N. BROWNING, five years younger than JOHN R., was getting his start in life at Fort Griffin. The man he was may be known by the fact that in 1864, at the age of 14, he had taken his brother JACK’S place as a soldier while Jack came home to plant the crop. Now a grown man, he was supplementing the seven months of schooling he had received as a boy by reading law. Later he was to be one of the best known lawyers of Texas and lieutenant governor of the state. W. L. “BUD” BROWNING and J. A. BROWNING, other brothers, were getting a start in the cattle business, which they followed throughout their lives.

After a few months at Fort Griffin, Mr. and Mrs. Browning decided they did not want to live in that environment, especially with a family of girls. Then, too, they had been accustomed to farming and looked on it with more favor than the nomadic life of the cowman.

At that time Weatherford was the big trading point of the territory of over 100 miles to the west and northwest. It was a hustling frontier town.

“When I first traveled across it, I thought Parker County was the finest country I had ever seen. There were clumps of trees, live oaks, post oaks, and hackberry, scattered here and there with open space between them. Cutting across the country were streams fringed with timber. Fine grass everywhere, fat cattle and plenty of game. It was as fine a place as one would want to make a living and get a start in life.”

Mr. Browning moved to Parker County and took up land about 14 miles west of Weatherford. He felled trees, split the trunks and built a palisade house for his first home. He broke land and planted a crop and then came his first disaster. He owned a pair of young mules that he had driven from Arkansas. They were $300 in gold and with his wagon and team, he could make $4 to $5 a day when he wanted outside work. He had been warned that it was unsafe to let valuable stock run loose, but he hobbled them and let them graze at night near the house. One morning they were gone and he never heard of them. It was a severe loss and it took him some time to get on his feet financially.

As pioneer conditions passed, Mr. and Mrs. Browning settled down to farm life in Parker County. In their more active years they bought and improved five farms in the county. After their children were all grown, they moved to Weatherford and have lived here for the past 24 years, but they continue to own a farm near town.

The children living are Mrs. J. M. BAUCOM of Canyon, Texas, R. E. BROWNING of Waurika, Oklahoma, Mrs. W. E. FONDREN of the Adell community in Parker County, and JOE BROWNING of Weatherford. There are 20 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Of the six children born to W. F. BROWNING, three are still living, Mrs. J. O. STREET of Okemah, Oklahoma, Mrs. S. S. PARRISH of Fallong, Nevada, and J. R. BROWNING of Weatherford. Between the death of W. F. BROWNING and one of his sons was 53 years. JOE and W. L. “BUCK” BROWNING both stayed in the cattle business and died some years ago. JAMES N. BROWNING has been dead several years. He was a member of the one of the leading law firms of Amarillo and was known throughout the state.

The most outstanding achievement in the career of JAMES N. BROWNING was his work in the legislature in connection with the introducing and passage of certain land laws thereby the actual settler would be allowed to file on small tracts of land in the Panhandle country.

In the early days it was the general belief of those living in the more populated section of the state that the land in the Panhandle country was barren and desolate country and unfit except for any purpose except cattle raising. So firm was this belief that the legislature passed many laws that retarded its development.

The most unjust law was known as the leasing law. For a very nominal sum, cattle barons were privileged to lease from the state millions of acres of land for grazing purposes. Thus in a year or two, almost the entire Panhandle was controlled by a few cattle syndicates.

In many instances land that was bring lived on by actual settlers was leased out from under them. Families were notified to leave being told they were trespassers. At one time, on one particular ranch, 25 families were told to get out and stay out.

Mr. Browning represented 69 counties in his district which was by far the largest representative district in the state. He pleaded for the repeal of this measure and finally succeeded in getting the desired action.

The repeal of the leasing law and the passage of Mr. Browning’s bill to sell the land to the actual settlers did more to develop the Panhandle and West Texas than any single act by any other man or set of men.

As a lieutenant governor, Mr. Browning was an authority on parliamentary law and presided over the senate with a dignity and dispatch. He acted as governor of the state for a few days on two occasions when Gov. SAYERS was called out of the state. As a district judge, Mr. Browning was noted for his fair decisions.

The Daily Oklahoman
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
March 26, 1911
Twins Are Sons of Revolution Hero
Shelbyville, Tennessee, March 25: Lincoln County believes it has the last sons of the Revolution and the oldest twins in the United States in JACOB J. and THOMAS V. GREER, 87 years old. They are the sons of JOSEPH GREER, one of the heroes of King’s Mountain whose trip through the wilderness to Philadelphia bearing a dispatch to Gen. Washington is referred to in several histories. After the war, JOSEPH GREER came to Tennessee and settled on Cane Creek, where his twin sons still live on land granted their father for his service in the Revolutionary War.

Burial was in Willow Cemetery.

Mr. LINVILLE, a retired farmer, lived here 41 years before moving to Tennessee five years ago. He was born Sept. 25, 1873 in Lincoln County, Tennessee and married NORA HARDWICK in Dallas County in 1916, after which the couple moved to Haskell. He was an early day school teacher. His father, a native West Indian, was an operator in the “underground railroad,” and his mother was part Choctaw Indian. He was the oldest child of ten. He was 24 when he converted and entered the Methodist Episcopal conference. He then came to make his home in Lincoln with his two daughters, MINNIE MOORE and LULA WASHINGTON. During his lifetime, he established churches and schools where there were none in an attempt to further the progress of the race. Surviving him are two sisters, MARY FOSTER of Webster Grove, Missouri and ELIZABETH ESTELL of St. Louis, Missouri, a brother, JESS NICHOLS of Kansas City; two daughters MINNIE MOORE and LULA WASHINGTON of Lincoln; niece BEATRICE GRAY of Omaha; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Amarillo Globe Times
Amarillo, Texas
November 19, 1969

DAVID O.
