Hi. Jeff. Do you have anything on George W. Rogers and Lula V. Hester???? I believe in 1900 in their household in Weekley Co. Tenn. there was: George E. Rogers b. June 1893, Porter R.(Roscoe)Rogers b. Apr. 1898, A nephew-Rust T. Thornton. Porter Roscoe Rogers was a native of Ripley, Tenn. before 1939. Was Porters' mother a Hester???? These Rogers were in Graves Co. Kentucky 1820>1890's. These are related: Rogers-Tuckers-Meltons?,Wingos?,Elliots?Gibsons?,Edwards?,Pittmans?Hesters? My other email address is ctr76315@centurytel.net;Thanks,Joe.

Another think is some times the clerks office messed up the paper work, and I guess they didn't really care or noticed. Lauderdale was real sloppy. On my grandmothers certificate, they had the witness name as the person my grandfather was married to which was a man. Her name was listed as the witness and further down on the page she was listed again, but it took me forever to find this certificate, because it wasn't done correctly. I would say there is an explanation. Lauderdale has some of the worst records,I have seen. Actually, I am not sure if her marriage was even valid because of the descrepancies. I hope you can figure it out.

I have worked on alot of the marriage records. In this county it is not unusual to have cousins marrying cousins. Also, I found cousins that had that have women names. I have one cousin named Margie and one named Beverly from Lauderdale both were men. I found it unusual, but I verified it. That was two that I found but there were others including my grandfather who had a female type name. I doubt that it would be possible during these time frame, that gay was an issue. Now that is my observation and I have researched this county alot and go there frequently.

Gay marriage in early 1950s?

Does anyone know if marriages between the same sex were being performed in Lauderdale County in the early 1950s?

I just found a very unusual marriage certificate. One of these people may still be living so I am not going to use real names.

A man posted the marriage bond. Normally, his name would appear again with his bride's name where it names the two people bound to be married. Instead, two women's names appear as the people who were to be married. The names are common female names and cannot possibly be male. They had the same surname. I do not know how the two women were related but it is very likely that they were because the surname is relatively rare. The marriage was performed the next day.

The tombstone of one of the women has her maiden name on it. Normally, this would mean that she never married or married a man with the same surname. I am wondering if she actually married a female cousin.

I couldn't find a message board that seemed relevant to this type of question about records. But I thought someone familiar with local records might be able to help.

Thanks, Janet

Jerry. I am so glad you got my e mail. I have been researching since about 2004 when my mom passed. My father"s line is Raines-Rains. Margret Rains was born June 23rd 1836 in Madison County Tn. She married William W Newman on Dec 10th 1857 in Madison. Margret was the daughter of Joel S Rains and Elizabeth Yarbrough. There were about 15 children born to Joel and Elizabeth. One of course was margret and another was my grandfather Jesse Newton Rains My grandfather Jesse was married first to Cordelia Justice. Cordelia died shortly after giving birth to her 8th or 9th child. (at that time the last name was spelles RAINS. My father told me than when Jesse married my grandmother Nannie Parlow they changed the spelling to RAINES. Jesse and Nannie had an additional 8 or 9 children. Several of the children born to Jesse and Cordelia moved to the Lauderdale area. My grandfather and Nannie were basically from Madison and Gibson counties. William was born Sept 16th 1833. Margret and William also had a large family. James Andrew Newman Born Oct 31 1859 - Albert Monroe Newman (B Jan 7 1861 - John Robert B Oct 16 1863 - George William B Sept 15 1864- Joel Thomas B Feb 1 1866- Charles Henry B Jan 7 1868 - Sarah Elizabeth B Mar 21 1869- Walter Bedford B Dec 30 1872. I am sure I have come across the name Sinclair somewhere in my research but I am not the most organized when I search. I probably have about 20 notebooks just on the Rains line alone but have never been organized. I just jot notes here and there and soon I had 20 notebooks of unorganized notes. Would love to share any info you may have, If you can tell me your grandmothers name and maybe her father's name I may be able to find more info for you, Do you have an E mail for Alvin Newman as I would like to check on the photo"s he has. Again thanx for getting back to me> It is always good to find another link in the family. Bev (Raines) Gaylord

Mary McPherson, a minor, wife of Thomas McPherson, Jr (was daughter of
Patsy and John Calahan)
B.	Louisa Alford, a minor (was daughter of Patsy and Green Alford)

The elder George R. Williams had 191 acres in Civil District 10, part of 293 acres he had bought earlier. He sold 102 acres to Hiram C. Keller; Margaret and husband sold their 1/6 interest in the 191 acres to Keller, also. His son, George R. William, sold his 1/6 interest to E. S. Wakefield. That brought Keller and Wakefield into this suit for partition.
The elder and younger George R. Williams were ancestors of Carol Ann Carrano (kyann312@aol.com) and Patsy Uptain (patsam@clearwire.net), who are eagerly researching this Williams family. Their research shows that one George Williams, father of the above elder George came to Lauderdale County by 1837 from the Rutherford/ Cleveland County area with five sons: Daniel; David; Turner; William; and George. He was dead by August 1841 when his son, David, was made administrator of his estate.
The above elder George R. Williams-the one who died in November 1856-- married first Peggy Melton who died, and in 1849 he married Louisa Jane (Given) Hutcherson. Jerome Williams was his posthumous child by Louisa. In December 1858 she married Andrew Caplinger, and appears to have died before the 1860 census when her children, Kizziah and Jerome, were enumerated in the household of her mother, Jane Givens.
I have some info on the Griggs family. Wiley Griggs married Lucretia Glimp (Glymp) and had children. She died and he married her sister Elizabeth. Wiley and the Glimps came from Williamson County TN. We too had searched hi and lo for Guy Minerty Pitts and Lennie H. Griggs children with limited success. In 1920 Guy has remarried Ida and is living in Crittendon County Arkansas (Blackoak). Lennie is living in the county poor house in district 15 of Lauderdale County. Her son Buford G Pitts age 4 is also in the poor house. I find daughter Leola P Pitts, (Pearl ?), living with Frank Tichenor and family in 1920. She is listed as other with note "belongs to the family".

Children we have determined from newspapers, etc, and others include: Pearl, Edna Viola, Lucy Adell, Carney May, Clarence Mckenzie, and Buford G. However I believe it was my sister who encountered an obit in Fulton Co. Ark of an Abner Carter Pitts Born probably after they divorced. He died 19 Feb 1978.

I have some Griggs info if anyone needs any help. I don't have it all that's for sure. Abner Carter Pitts father was Henry C. Pitts and Henry's parents were Abner Pitts and Lucinda Golding. When Lucinda Goldings father Thomas Golding died Abner inherited most of his wealth. There were many Pitts log homes standing in the Lightfoot area on in to the 50's. They came from SC. In Tupelo Miss in the downtown Library one can find many of the will books of SC counties that cover the Pitts, and DeWaults who came to Lauderdale County Tn.

Go to the www.lctn.com website and into the genealogy section and look under family photos and Barnes. There is a picture of Lucinda Clementine Pitts, granddaughter of Thomas Golding.

jrbarnes11@tds.net

We've dug and dug on this tree as well. Guy Minerty Pitts moved to Crittendon County Ark by 1920 and married Ida. A stepson Riley McHenry lived with them. In 1920 in Lauderdale County Tn, Lennie is in the County poor house as a servant in the 15th district. Buelah G Pitts, born 1916 is there as well. I find Leola P. Griggs (Pearl ?) living with Frank Tichenor and wife in 1920. She is listed as "one of the family" She was born 1915.

From all the sources we could muster we determined the children to be Pearl, Edna Viola, Lucy Adell, Carney May, Clarence Mckenzie, Buford or Bulah. Then there arises a question from an obit in Fulton Co. Arkansas 19 Feb 1978 of one Abner Carter Pitts, (my sister must have found), which says he is Guy's son.

As far as the Griggs go, I have a lot on them as well. Wiley is the parent of most of the Lauderdale Griggs. he came from williamson County TN. Married Lucretia Glimp (Glymp) also from Williamson county too. They had children. After she died Wiley married her sister Elizabeth. They had several children.

I will furnish what I have on request. Oh yeah, I come from the Pitts too and am kin to many Griggs as corrollary cousins. Go to the family photos on the www.lctn.com website and under Barnes you will see Lucinda Clementine Pitts. Abner Carter Pitts father was Henry Thomas Pitts. Henry's father was Abner Pitts. You can glean all that from the photo I mentioned above.

jrbarnes11@tds.net

Ellie Sinclair: When I attended Arp Elem School in 1950-51, there was an Ellie Sinclair in my 8th grade class. I know nothing about her or family. Just wondering if this the same person. My Ellie was attractive, clean scrubbed, neat as a pin, not too tall, and a little on the plump side. Very nice person. I don't recall her going to high school. Maybe started and quit. Not too much emphasis was put on education in those days. - Tom Barnes, Woodbridge, Va.

Tulula Clifford Coldwell and Francis Marion Leggett were married May 5, 1881. Francis (France) died on April 6, 1950. Tulula died May 30, 1955. Your list of their children is about the same as my list except for a couple of things. According to my information Ella Clifford (Cliff) married Guy Franklin Duvall. After Guy's death she married Elzo Lowery of Kentucky and after his death she married E.E. Fuller. Tulula and France had twelve children. Two sets of twins. One set was Ina, my grandmother, and Robert. The other set of twins were Frank and Liddie.Robert, Frank, and Liddie all died in infancy. I believe Annie B. was the youngest child. I do not know who John, Mary, and Hallie are on your list. Thanks for the information you sent me. I hope this will help you. Ann James

James Cherry Leggett was my g g grandfather. His son Frances Marion Leggett was my great grandfather. Ina Elizabeth Leggett Fennel was the daughter of Frances Marion Leggett and my grandmother. I have done some research on the family, but any information that you could pass along would be appreciated. Do you have any information on Frances M. Leggett's wife Tulula Caldwell? I know that she came to Tennessee from Georgia when she was a child. I would like to know her parents name. Thanks, Ann James
