I recently came across a history of Lauderdale Co., that tells of the burial of an Everett R. Sumerow's wife on their family estate. I have been looking for the grave of my ggrandfather Benjamin Franklin Sumrow/Sumerow/Summerrow b. 1837 in Double Bridges, TN, d. 1869. I believe he lived in or near Double Bridges all his life. That's where the above estate was said to be located.

Is it possible there is a Sumerow Family Cemetery on the estate? I'd really appreciate any information about him. Thanks.

James Soward who is buried in Elon Cemetery near Halls, Lauderdale County, was a second cousin of my great great grandfather, West Walker Soward. I have found other members of the Lauderdale County Sowards buried in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery and the Love (Old Chapel) Cemetery. I have traced the Soward family back to the immigrant ancestor who arrived in America in 1667 from England and am willing to share information.

I found the following information and wondered if anyone had any additional information about Andrew Buttram:

Lauderdale County Enterprise....Ripley, TN....Friday, February 27, 1925: SHOT AT DANCE -- Andrew Buttram was killed Saturday night, three miles north of Halespoint on the Mississippi River. Buttram and his wife had attended a dance, which broke up about 11:30 and it is said they were going to their auto when he was shot four times, once of the loads taking affect in his leg, two in his body and one in his head, resulting in death instantaneously. No motive is assigned for the deed insofar as we have been able to ascertain. Sheriff Craig went to Dyersburg Tuesday where he was met by Jess Green, charged with this crime, who was enroute to Ripley to give himself up. Buttram was about 38 years of age and is survived by his wife and one child.

....Bluff -- Messrs S J & G C Webb went to Halespoint Monday after the body of Andrew Buttram, which was buried the same day at Grace Cemetery. He leaves a wife and baby.

Lauderdale County Enterprise....Ripley, TN....Friday, March 13, 1925: PRELIMINARY TRIAL HELD -- The preliminary trial for Lonnie Cheek, Jess Green and Dick Dowdie, charged with the murder of Andrew Buttram at a dance near Halespoint on the night of February 21st, was held here Tuesday before Justices R S Banks and S T Kirkpatrick. Cheek was released and Green & Dowdie were bound over to Circuit Court under $10,000 bond each, which they secured and were released. A large crowd was present and several witnesses examined. The trial consumed most of the day. The men were represented by Craig and Durham and the State by Wardlaw Steele.
I am still trying to find info on the Vaden's that came to Lauderdale Co. in the 1880 census.

Mary Safronia Vaden along with her children were in the 1880 census. She came from Alabama. Her husband in the 1870 census was John. Apparently he died before 1880.

She can be found in the 1900 census in Haywood Co.

Other Vaden's came to the area. Children of Smith Vaden also came. The Vaden's lived in Lauderdale, Haywood and Dyer counties at different times.

So far I have not found any connection with these Vaden's and the Smith Co. Tn. Vaden's. Most were born in Alabama. A few of the oldest children of Smith Vaden were born in Alabama, maybe ???, White Co. TN.

Seems to have been two families that came from Alabama. Those of John and Mary Safronia Vaden and Smith Vaden.

I thought that John and Smith were brothers. Smith was born in about 1810 Virginia and John in the 30's in North Carolina. Which they could still be brothers.

Any info on these Vaden's would sure be appreciated.

Cathy

1850 Lauderdale Co, TN: Robert C. West, daughter Frances E/Ellen F-?

Hi,
I'm looking for any information on Ellen F. West, b.about 1839 in TN. She married Peyton C. Smith, son of Peyton Randolph Smith, in Lauderdale Co in 1855. She died in Tipton Co, TN in 1875. Peyton C & Ellen F are my gg-grandparents
I believe she may be the daughter of Robert C. West, b. in VA. The 1850 Lauderdale Co, TN, census lists a daughter, Frances E West, that is the same age as Ellen. I THink it may be her, that F is for Frances- but I don't know for sure- no evidence. She is on the 1860 Carroll Parrish, LA census with her husband Peyton C. Smith, & 2yo son, Peyton Jr- and then she is not to be found! I got her date & place of death from a Smith cousin.
Peyton & Ellen had 2 children listed by initials on the 1880 Tipton Co, TN census, whose names I have not been able to find. The daughter is E.T. Smith, b.1870 in TN. I suspect that, being the only girl, she may have been named after her mother- but that's another guess!
Any information on Ellen F West, Robert C West, or any of his other family would be greatly appreciated! I read an old posting from someone who said Robert C. Smith's parents were William West & Elizbeth Stone of VA.
ThankS- Jan

Richard Brown married Mosella Joplin, the daughter of Aaron Joplin and Nancy Jane Edwards. Some of my research indicate that Aaron was connected to Thomas Joplin of the Joplin Plantation/Farm in Hennings TN mentioned in the book and movie "ROOTS" by Alex Haley.

I am currently researching Descendants Of Polk Malone and Winnie Miller from Haywood County, settled there in the 1800's. Polk was born in 1850, believed to be from Alabama. I am unable to find any info on him before 1880. He was my Great Grand father. He and winnie raised their families in Haywood and Lauderdale county. Winnie was born Sep 1862, the daughter of Frank Miller and Ann Smith. Polk and Winnie had 9 children, Frank and Ann had 15, Most of them all settled in Lauderdale of Haywood County. These are some pretty large families and all info would be welcomed!
John Gatewood (or Garnett) Cole, b.1819 in VA, living Lauderdale, TN

I'm looking for any information on a John G. Cole who was born in Caroline County, VA Nov. 7, 1819. His middle initial most likely stands for either Gatewood or Garnett.

I believe that as of 1851 he was living in Lauderdale County, TN where his 19yo wife Martha T. Cole died May 17, 1851 leaving him with an infant daughter, name unknown. Martha Cole's maiden name may have been Borum (her mother's surname at the time of her death)

I also believe that he fought in the Confederate Army while living in Tennessee, possibly with Company B (later G), 5th Tennessee Infantry, CSA...which could place him in Henry County at some point.

We have no solid data on him except for a letter written by one of his nieces, and 1850 Census listing for John & Martha in Lauderdale County, and his date of birth.

John's parents were John Gatewood Cole (1792-1864) and Nancy Robinson Broaddus (1794-1862) of Caroline County, VA.

Any info on life, death, burial, etc. appreciated

Specifically, I'm looking for the graves of Albert Thomas "A.T." Wiggins and wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Jackson Wiggins. I don't know their death dates, but it would be somewhere between 1920-1940.
Seeking Descendants of Samuel Warner or Volner 1860 Lauderdale Co TN

I am seeking descendants of Samuel Warner who also went by Samuel Volner, born ca 1811 in Tennessee. He was on the 1850 Henderson Co., TN as "Samuel Volner" with wife "Darely/Dolly"; Deed records in Henderson Co., TN record him as "Volner" also. He was on the 1860 Lauderdale co., TN Census as "Samuel Warner" with wife "Dorothy" ("Dolly" is a nickname for Dorothy). I believe that his widow moved to Dunklin Co., Missouri by 1870 with the children including sons Isaiah, Elijah, and Elisha Warner/Volner. This family appears to have finally stuck with the surname Warner.

I believe that Samuel Volner/Samuel Warner was the son of Samuel and Synthie (Knife) Volner/Warner. Synthie was a Cherokee woman per descendants Eastern Cherokee Applications in 1906. The Cherokee would pronounce "Volner" as "Wah nah" thus producing "Warner". The family's surname was often spelled as Volner, Valner, Valiner, Voliner, Walner, Waliner, Warner, Wariner, etc. Samuel was supposedly a German immigrant which would also explain the change from a "V" to a "W" in many of the records. From my own research, I believe it more likely that the 1850 Henderson Co., TN census which records Samuel Warner (Sr.) as being born in Pennsylvania is more accurate.
John & Safronia (Mary) Vaden

I am looking for info on the John Vaden with wife Safronia in the 1860 Franklin Co. census.

Any one know this family, have any info on them?

In 1870 they were in Colbert Co. census. I have an idea they didn't move, it was cause Colbert Co. was created between the 1860 & 1870 census. Then where they lived in Franklin Co., became Colbert Co.

By 1880 Mary (Safronia or Safrona) was in Lauderdale Co., Tennessee with the children, but John is no longer in the household. 1900 Safrona is living in Haywood Co., Tennessee with Thomas J. Vaden and family. Census say Safrona is a cousin to Thomas. She is a widow, married 12 years.

I am not sure if I have found Thomas in past census. Says he was born in Alabama. Can't find a Vaden Family in Alabama that works out to be Thomas' family. If he was a cousin to Safronia, would have had to been a cousin by marriage, I would thing, maybe? So Thomas would be a son of a brother to John's dad.

Would appreciate any info on this family.

Thank you, Cathy

My father, William Henry Sasser (1922 - 1970) was born in Haywood or Lauderdale Co., Tennessee. My grandfather, John William Sasser (1885 - 1941) was, I believe, the son of Stephen H. Sasser. Would this be the same Stephen Sasser that was the son of Wiley Sasser? If so, which Sasser line would we be descendents? I am new to this research! Thanks for your help. John - coachWHS@msn.com

I need a photo of a gravestone that's located at St. Paul's Methodist Cemetery in Durhamville, TN. David J. Rowell left Marion SC in 1858 to visit his daughter, Rachel Rowell Rice. While there he passed away and I've recently learned that Rachel also passed away in 1858 and is buried there. At a cemetery listing website of St. Paul's they have him as: Ronell, David 1781-1858. They have Rachel listed as : Rice, Rachel Ronel 1808-1858; and her husband: Rice, John P. 1797-1866. I'd love to have all three but would especially like to have David's. I'll be happy to return the favor if someone needs any photo's from Nashville. Thanks!
I am researching my Lauderdale County, Tennessee ancestors. My gggreat grandmother and her family lived somewhere between Halls and Gates. between mid 1860's and 1930's. With the exception of my gggreat grandmother, all marriages took place between 1870-1900. I have been able to find marriage records for her sons through various sources, but none for her or her three daughters. I find this strange, since I know husband's first and last name.(listed above) Anybody have any ideas or suggestions.

I need Info on Oscar Grigsby born in Curve in 1893. I have looked at the cencus for 1900 and 1910 and it shows he was adopted by a James Baskins even though he kept his last name. His WW1 draft registration card shows that he was marrird in 1917 but he did not marry my Grandmother Edith untill 1922. I am trying to find out who his first wife was? I have heard that there was a murder that involved his 2 children and his first wife. I do know that he had a sister named laura.
