This is my grandfather. He was born in 1902 and I believe his father was Joseph H. Glascoe and mother was Mary M.(E.) Furguson. Would love any help in furthering the ancestral tree. I am having a very difficult time. The spelling of our last name has been all over the place. I have seen it spelled:
Glascoe, Glasco, Glasgo, Glasgow, Glascow...plus many more. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT!

Thanks,
Joe Glascoe 1967- present

THANKS, GAY! You never fail to come up with answers to my often confused questions!

I'll have to ask Golden to be more specific. I don't think he will know more than "Late 1800s," but he might recognize a name. The sheriff evidently lived on Sunkist Road. Does that help locate the correct man?

Thanks again, Gay.

Sharon

Hi, Jane -
I know Lake was formed in 1870 from Obion; I need the name of the Sheriff for the latter part of 1800... AFTER the formation of the new county. I can probably assume it was one of the Haynes boys, but I need to be sure.

IS there a published list of the Lake County sheriffs? I've shot my wad on finding such a list.

Thanks

Sharon

I am Carrie mother-we work on our trees together. The Paul Vanderwood book is one of the best resources for Night Rider info. I took the Mitchell line of my family and David Alexander Mitchell was one of the original members of the "Anti Draining" group at Reelfoot Lake and signed the original lawsuit. His brother Frank is in the book-he was a Night Rider it seems. David is my Great-grandfather and married Susan Ida Dyer in Hornbeak in 1881- the Dyer family is very prominent in that area. I have some photos- tombstones and such from my trips to Hornbeak with my Dad. The Obion County Museum and the wonderful Miss Marti there has a lot of info and displays about the NIght Riders. My Dad is fascinated with them- and he has always loved Reelfoot Lake. We are doing the family history for him. I am glad to share what I have if you contact me at mitchellsheri@att.net ---the MItchells are hard to track- I have some info but am still searching. Dad did the DNA test for the Mitchell DNA project too- that helped a little.
Sheri L. Mitchell- #1 Granddaughter of David Alexander Mitchell (1857-1908)

This is a longshot, but I am looking for information on African American families that lived in District 4, Lake County, in 1939.
A farm laborer worked on the same farm as Thom Nathaniel Pollock at that time. I don't know what farm; does anyone know how I could find out? I've looked in the 1930 census and 1940 census to find single, black males in that area that were farm laborers, but it does not state what farm they worked on. I've narrowed it down to possibly a Mayfield, Horton or Mays surnames in 1940. Any help appreciated.

I found the book which belonged to my father."Night Riders of Reelfoot Lake" by Paul J. Vanderwood published by Memphis State University Press in 1969.

I skimmed through it looking for names. It seems a lot of people involved didn't reveal their involvement. They wore dark hoods with the eyes & mouth cut out similar to the Ku Klux Clan. Some name that were brought to justice for hanging Robert Z. Taylor & Quentin Rankin were:

Frank Fehringer, a petty bootlegger from Hickman, KY, who had participated in the slaughter of the Walker family near Hickman. He turned state's evidence;
Tom Wilson, who was Rankin's hangman;
Bob Huffman, his assassin;
Garret Johnson had led the murderers.
Bud Morris
Jim Caksackkar
Harry McQueen
Tid Burton, first rider arrested
Tom Johnson
William Watson
Hershell Hogg
Wad Morris
Fred Pinion
Ella Pride, only female rider
Sam Applewhite
Tom Wilson
Jesse Carter
Bob Lee
Elijah "Lige" Cloar
John Ratliff
Charles Russell
Roy Ransom

The justice system of this area was very flawed. They used force, fear & coercian to get confessions out of the men. These are probably not all that were involved but all that were arrrested for the murders.

I grew up about six miles from Reelfoot Lake. I recognize some of the last names of the people involved.

I hope this helps.

We were told that she was giving to the Roberts family when she was young because her parents could not care for her. She remembers a sister she thinks. She remebers her father coming to see her as she got older. William is on my family tree, I think he is the father of William Hubbard Jr whose is Minnies bio father. If you have any information to share I would glady appreciate it. My email is joelovesjen@hotmail.com Please contact me asap.
Have not access to Obits but the cemetery listing on FAG is from SS Death Index. I did a google search on Lake County TN Genealogy and then went to Hayes Memorial Gardens and all the burials for that cemetery are listed on the website. After her and her sisters names and dates list that full info from SS Death Index so stone must have just years. Her sister is on the same stone

Hope some of this helps even if not the obit you wanted.

I will take a chance in not offending you by replying since I grew up in the house in Newbern, Dyer Co, TN that Katie Mooring Porter inherited from her husband, Henry Clay Porter, when he died in 1904. Katie Mooring Porter died in 1928. My mother sold the house about 1980 that she and my father had owned since 1936 when they purchased the residence from her estate. Lots of history there. I would be happy to answer any of your questions regarding this wonderful Victorian house in which I grew up in what was a charming, peaceful community full of fabulously interesting people.
Sincerely,
Charles R.
I am not sure if your message was intended for me. If so, I apologize for the delay in responding showing my inexperience at this. My mother sold the Henry Clay Porter/Katie Mooring Porter home on Monroe Street in Newbern, Dyer Co, TN about 1980. I have many memories growing up in this fabulous old Victorian residence on a main street of the town of Newbern. I would be happy to answer any questions that you might have about the house.
Are you or your husband a descendant of Sam Latimer who owned Latimer's Drug Store in Dyersburg, Dyer Co, TN? I too owned a drug store in Dyersburg.

My best wishes to you and your family in the new year,
Charles R.
Hattie Ovella (COLEMAN) RIGGS Burial Place

My paternal grandmother, Hattie Ovella (COLEMAN) RIGGS, was born May 16, 1884, Jeannette, Decatur Co., TN, and married Melvin Claud RIGGS on May 30, 1900 in Decatur, TN. She died in 1927.

Hattie's Death Certificate shows no Date of Death; Place of Death is Dyer Co., 9th Civil District, Newbern, TN; the Cause of Death code number is 205b, which I understand means Unknown. 'No Doctor' is written in the Cause of Death section. There is no burial information.

The Tennessee Deaths and Burials Index shows her date of death as Aug., 1927, Death Place, Newbern, Dyer Co., TN.

At the upper left hand corner of the attached Death Certificate, near the Place of Death space, is handwritten 2 words, difficult to read, that may be 'Hills' and underneath that, 'Ridgely'. This notation may indicate that Hattie was buried in the Ridgely Cemetery, which as I understand, was located in Lake Co., TN.

I phoned the Ridgely City Hall Dept., and was told that the Ridgely Cemetery is now called New Haven, and that the records were all burned in 1950. I have been searching for any on-line burial records but have not found her resting place yet.

It appears that Hattie had just given birth to her 10th child, Floyd RIGGS, May 31, 1927. Floyd died July 9, 1927. No Death Certificate has been found for infant Floyd.

Most likely Hattie and her family were poor and would not have been able to provide a sizable grave marker, but I'm hoping that some record or burial site can be found, hopefully near her newborn.

Any help in discovering her burial place will be gratefully appreciated.

Peggy Riggs Kopp
artnpeg@ptd.net
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~peggyriggs...

Charles H. Smith or Schmidt 1867-1947

I am looking for information on Charles H. Smith. He married Ethel Richardson on Feb. 14, 1912 in Lake County. There children were Walker, Clarence, Hayden, Goalder, and Doris. The family was living in Fulton County in the 1920 & 1930 census. He also had land in Lake County and ran a shingle mill near Owlhoot. Supposedly he was born in Germany and changed his name from Schmidt. He was also rumored to have another family at the same time as this one. Any information would be appreciated!

Thank you.
