The following 1813 promotions for the Knox County, Tennessee 10th militia regiment appear in the “Records of Commissions of Officers in the Tennessee Militia, 1796-1815” by Mrs. John Trotwood Moore, SPC 929.3768.

• Aaron ARMSTRONG was promoted to Lieutenant on 8/7/1813. He was subsequently promoted to captain on 12/13/1815.
• Charles BREEDLOVE was promoted to Lieutenant on 8/7/1813.
• John CHUMNEIGH was promoted to Ensign on 8/7/1813.
• Samuel CRAWFORD was promoted to Ensign on 1/28/1813.
• Alexander DOUGLAS was promoted to Captain on 8/7/1813.
• Henry GRAVES was promoted to Captain on 8/7/1813.
• John HANSARD was promoted to Ensign on 10/1/1813.
• Areabel McLEMORE was promoted to Ensign on 1/28/1813.
• Henry MULVANEY was promoted to Lieutenant on 8/7/1813.
• Daniel PEW was promoted to Ensign on 8/7/1813.
• Michael TROUT was promoted to Lieutenant on 1/28/1813.
• Jesse TURNER was promoted to Ensign on 1/28/1813.
• Enoch PARSONS was promoted to Brigadier Major of the 1st Brigade on 8/17/1813.

John CHUMNEIGH *MAY* may be my GGGGrandfather John A. CHUMNEY who first appears in the records of Henry County, Alabama when he married my GGGGrandmother Milly WATTS there on August 3, 1825. Coincidentally (or not), a Jesse TURNER also first appears in the Henry County, Alabama records when he married a Miss GIBSON there on July 28, 1825. I’m looking for more concrete evidence to prove or disprove that John CHUMNEIGH in Knox County, Tennessee in 1813 is the same man as John A. CHUMNEY of Henry County, Alabama in 1825. So, …

(1) Does anyone have evidence that John CHUMNEIGH was a different John CHUMNEY/CHUMLEY/CHUMBLEY than John A. CHUMNEY of Henry Co., AL?

(2) Does anyone know if Jesse TURNER of Knox County, TN in 1813 is or is not the same man as Jesse TURNER of Henry County, AL in 1825?

(3) Does anyone know of others on the list of officers above who migrated from Knox County, TN to south Alabama in the early 1800’s?

(4) Does anyone know if the 10th regiment participated in the War of 1812 or the Creek Indian War, and, if so, to what extent?

(5) According to the forward of Mrs. Moore’s book, commissions of Tennessee militia officers are listed in a series of manuscript books in the Tennessee State Archives. As of November 1, 1976 when her book was published, the commissions for the years 1816-1827 had not been compiled and printed. Does anyone know if the commissions for the years 1816-1827 were ever published and, if so, by whom? The Tennessee State Archives’ web site states that the original commission books were microfilmed. Does anyone know if copies of these microfilms are available in any of the eastern Tennessee libraries?

Thanks in advance for your help.
