Am researching Earl Frank Moore, my grandfather, born around 1898/1899 in the Mud Creek/Oak Grove/Shady Grove area of Jefferson County. Apparently his mother and father were not married. Family legend is that Dr. Eli Perry Rainwater is his father, but no birth certificate exists with State of TN. Frank was raised with his mother's family and never took his father's last name. Nick Moore was apparently his mother's brother, and Frank grew up and was raised mostly by Nick. Nick grew up to have two sons, Hubert and Hollis. I think all are buried at Swannsylvania. G'pa used to say he inherited 40 acres in Clearwater FL from Dr. Rainwater's will, but he had an uncle of the same name who claimed the land but I can't find the will. All I have are stories, and I'm looking for ANY information on my grandfather's family. Thank you!

There is a Jacob Maddox in Jefferson County in the same time period could they be related? James & Sarah were married 12-2 1833. sons Thomas & Caswell married 2 Millken sisters. Caswell b. May 4, 1843 a Civil War veteran, is our line.

Hi everyone, I am looking for information about Joseph Newman possibly born in late 1700's...He might have been the father of my ggggrandmother, Margaret Sally Newman who married Joab Blackwell in Jefferson Co. in 1832...Margaret died aft. 1850, and Joab remarried in 1860's...My suspicions that Joseph might have been her father come from a court document where Joab Blackwell sued the heirs of Joseph Newman. It didn't state the reason why, just that it was a general court docket...If anyone has any information about this, or about Joseph Newman in this general time frame, I would great appreciate it...

It appears most of my relative's come from the Greene /Jefferson County area of Tennessee and northern Alabama.

James H. Harrison b Sept 26, 1808 d Jan 13, 1872 buried in Harrisons Cemetary Greene Cty, TN married to Rebecca Brooks b Nov 10, 1814 d Feb 7, 1872.

They had a son (and this is where it gets a little fuzzy) named James Harvey Alexander Harrison b 1856 d 1909 married to Nancy Jane Britton b 1858 d 1918. Her family was Allen Britton b 1819 d 1880 mother Mary Ann Cullent b 1822 d 1870.

It was said James Harvey Alexander ran a pitchfork through a guy killing him and left Tenn for northern Alabama in early 1900's. I cannot definitely connect James Harvey to James H. But I am making a trip in early June to Greene and Jefferson Counties to find out more.

They had two daughters Bertha who never married and Gertrude who married Fred Kerr they had no children If any out there that knows anything about A.J.Lewis We would like to hear from you. Married Aug 6, 1902, in Jefferson Co. and remained in Jefferson Co. In 1942 she gave the information to the TVA for the reinterment of Christpher and Malinda Newman Ailey from the old Ailey's Ch. Cemetery to the new one. She also gave the info on her sister Millie. At that time they lived in New Market. I do not know where New Market is ,but thru the 1930 census they are in Jefferson Co. in Civil District 8. I would like to know the dates of death and the children's name and their place of burial. I currently have the following children :

The descendants of William Miller are Margaret, Peter, Eliza, Delores and Harris. My grandfather was Harris. According to census records some of the neighbors family names are Corbett, Acuff, Swann, Rimmer, Anderson, Lally and Wells. I am looking for information on the William Miller family. Census records show Elizabeth as William wife. Not sure if William's father is Freeman.

Hello,

I am searching for information on a Nancy Catherine HOLT b. abt. 1859. Her parents were John Holt b. abt. 1798 d. abt. 1863 and Mary (Polly) Glassup. I've been told that she had a brother named John Anderson HOLT b. 1/20/1862 d. 5/16/1938. John Anderson had a daughter named Nora Nee HOLT b 12/6/1900 d. 12/21/1991.

The most that I can learn about Nancy is that she had two children out of wedlock. One was a son she named Lilburn Porter HOLT. Nancy gave the child her last name. I don't have anything on the father except that he was full or some part Cherokee.

I've also been told that Nancy worked for the Stokley family and that Lilburn worked there too. It's believed that Nancy went to Jefferson Co., TN to give birth to Lilburn around May 1879 or 1880. She and several brothers are listed in the 1880 Jefferson Co., TN census.

I am looking for confirmation on any of the above or any info that differs concerning Nancy and her parents and Lilburn's father.

Seek information regarding Gravesite of Jacob Coffman, a Primitive Baptist Preacher, who married Nancy Walker in Jefferson County on 11Nov1799.

They had children:
Lovell - b1800; James - b1802; Maryan (Polly) - b1803; Francis - b1805; David - b1808; Jane - b1809; Elizabeth - b1811; Savannah - b1813; Adah - b1817; Louisa - b1817 (Twins).

Grandfather Jacob was a Private with Bunch's Regiment of the East TN Militia during the War of 1812 and fought in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, AL on 27Mar1814.

He is the son of David Coffman (RS) and MaryAnn Lovell.

A Sevier with the first name John may have been the groom. The Guilford female's first name has been lost with other information. Guilford may have actually become Gilford at some point. Born ABOUT 1796-1800.

William S Manson is listed in the 1830 census in jefferson County and there is also a William Manson 70-80 years of age on the neighboring farm (his father)

William S Manson IS listed on the 1840 census as about 40-50 years old with 4 sons, 3 daughters and a wife of the same age as he.

By 1850 he is no longer in Jefferson County, but his son William T Manson is in neighboring Grainger County married with a child.

I am searching for information about William S Manson who his wife is, who their children are, who they married? I RECEIVED A copy of a handwritten court record dated 1840 signed by him as a Justice of the Peace in Jefferson County.

He is not listed in Jefferson County for 1820 census. where did he come from?

I am African American and I am searching for information on the Peck Family of Jefferson City, Tenn. My grandfathers name was George Peck. He was born in 1900 in Dandridge, Tenn., which is in Jefferson County a few miles from Jefferson City, Tenn. He had 3 brothers Sylvester, Arthur, Harry and 1 sister Nellie. His mothers name was Anna Boyd-Peck and his fathers name was Robert Peck. He had some cousins with the last name of Sherfield and Swaggarty. My grandfather moved to Jefferson City and married Willie Mae Moore. I believe there is a connection to Jacob and Adam Peck from this area. Jacob from what I have been told founded Jefferson City which at that time was Mossy Creek. And I have been told they owned several slaves. She was the "nearest relative" who provided information to TVA when they did grave removals/relocations. The deceased was Nansie/Nancie Caroline EDMONDS (1901-1907). She was buried either with or next to the Isaac RENEAU/Eliza PATTERSON family in original grave #500 in Pleasant Hill, moved to Hills Union.

Searching for any infomation on Arriena Minerva Sumake. She was born in Buncombe Co. about 1839. She married Joseph H Hill in Haywood C. on January 17, 1858. Joseph was born in Tennessee about 1839. They had a Bond Marriage (I am not clear on what this is.)
--By 1860 they had a son named James L. 1870 there were in Jefferson, TN with childer James, John R, Joseph B(deaf/idiotic), Goerge and Mary Josephine(my gr, gr grandmother).
--1880 still in Jefferson, TN they added F or H E., MJ and AM to the family.
--1900 Arriena and Joseph were in Texas with their widowed daughter Mary Josephine Hill and her children: Florence, Nora, Irene and Jesse James.
--Mary Josephine's husband James "Jim" Chambers died in 1896 when my great grandfather was 2 yrs. old.

I am researching the family of John McSPADDEN and Esther THOMPSON who came to Jefferson Co. in 1788 from VA. John died in 1798 and Esther in 1835. One of their sons, Samuel Eagleton McSPADDEN married Polly LOWRY in 1817 in Jefferson Co. then moved to Monroe Co. around 1820. I would especially like to find out what happened to Samuel and Polly's sons John Thompson and Matthew Blackburn McSPADDEN.

I just found a listing for a Thomas Thomas and family in the 1850 District 13 census taken 18 Dec 1850 that may be of interest to someone. I share the name but he doesn't appear to be my family line. Anyone know who he and family are? I dont' recall seeing this Thomas Thomas indexed so it surprised me to find it in the listings.

My Gr-grandfather is Thomas Thomas,b 1839 in Jeff County. Perhaps his father Jacob Thomas and Mary (Callahan) Thomas, named him for this Thomas. Jacob died in 1847, Mary and most of the family appear in the 1850 Buchanan County, Missouri census.

Hills (to start with, Thos A. and Swinfield Hill who both appear on the 1861 Jefferson Co. Tax List). I have found it a real challenge given the census taker's penchant for using initials instead of full names.

Can anyone offer any advice for a Jefferson County research newbie? Does anyone have these Hills charted out?

I also need informaton on James and his 1st and 2nd marriages. I believe his first spouce was named Eda or Edith. Later he married a woman by the name of Ina Irene Frank around 1925 in TN (she was previously married to a man with the surname, Hope). Does anyone have any information about this couple. Caroline was the daughter of John C. North (01/01/1825-04/19/1901) & Elizabeth Luster (07/03/1836-06/29/1916). John & Elizabeth North lived their entire life in Jefferson County and are buried in Hopewell Cemetery.

Hallace/Hollis ALLEN worked for 30 plus years in the coal mines of Southwest Virginia.

Help reading Tax Lists of 1822-1830

Hello everyone,

I just received some Tax List information from Jefferson County from 1822-1830 on microfilm from the Tennessee State Library and archives. I found ancestors listed, however, the headings at the top of the pages are not explained what they mean. Here are the headings:

Land WP BP TL St C Pb.Tax Co.Tax Jury Tax Poor Tax

Also these records are listed by "Company's". For example one of my ancestors is listed under Captain Thorn burgh's Company 1829. What does this mean? The records seem to be listed all this way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Searching for the second wife of James Gideon Miller, born 10-9-1837 near Talbott, Jefferson co,TN. 1st wife was Rosella Rimmer(Sarah Rosella) married on 5-25-1859 in Jefferson co,TN. They had 12 children before Rosella died in 1899. James remarried in 1899 or 1900 to Unknown and had two more children-Steller, born 4-3-1901 and Riller, born 9-18-1802. James died on 4-13-1905.
Need to know who the 2nd wife was and where she went after the death of James.

I am looking for my family. I have been told that a John Smith is their father & he died before 1850 census. These folks were in Jefferson Co. until 1870 when they were in Cocke. They are:
William Thomas Smith b. abt. 1816 Va. or Tn. Unk. 1st wife. 2nd wife was Martha Reams.
James Anderson Smith b. abt. 1822 Va. or Tn. m. Mary Jane Ann Fox.
Henry Smith b. abt. 1829 Tn.
Berry Smith b. abt.1831
David b. abt.1833 m. Frances Reams
There may be more siblings I don't know about.
Also, a Thomas L. Smith (related?) m. Marg. Cluck. They had a son, Franklin. When Thomas died Marg. remarr. the brother of my Mary Jane Ann Fox & Franklin lives with my William Thomas Smith in 1880-he's listed as a nephew.
