Hi Marti, maybe you've already had your answer on this question, but I'll add my information. Joseph Newman, 1778-1861 was married to Catherine "Caty" Cate, 1780-1831/1832. They had several children, but Margaret Sally Newman WAS NOT one of his children to my knowledge. The daughter of Joseph Newman and Catherine Cate Newman that married Joab Blackwell on 16 May 1822 was Sarah "Sally" I. Newman. After Sarah "Sally" died in 1835 Joab married two more times.

The will of Joseph Newman left the heirs (Blackwell children) of Sarah "Sally" Newman Blackwell 1000 acres in the Smokey Mountains. The court case that I know a little about was the Blackwell heirs filing a complaint to get title to the properties left to them in Joseph Newman's will. Joseph's sons were the executors and accused of not following Joseph's wishes. Don't know how this issue was resolved.
