P. Watson + martha florence dodd

of Newport. Jackson County, was born in Hempstead County, Ark.: in 1848, and is the
only child of William and Nellie Caldwell) Watson, natives, respectively, of Virginia and Arkansas. William
Watson emigrated from Virginia to Middle Tennessee at an early day, and in 1837 located in Hempstead
County, Ark.: he was a physician and surgeon, and became the owner of a large plantation in Hempstead
County. In 1858 he moved to Jackson County, and the following year went to Craighead County, where he
engaged in farming and the practice of his profession until his death, which occurred in 1864: he served in
the Mexican War, and took quite an active part in politics as a Jeffersonian Democrat. The mother of our
subject died in 1855. Dr. R. P. Watson was reared to the pursuit of farming; he attended the common
schools of his native county, and after his father's death educated himself, attending the seminary at
Jonesboro until 1870, when he entered the old University Medical College at Louisville, graduating from the
latter institution in 1872. The same year he commenced the practice of medicine at Jonesboro, remaining,
however, but a short time. He also acted as medical examiner for a New York life insurance company.
November 7, 1872. Dr. Watson married Martha Florence Dodd, of Jackson County, a daughter of Atlas and
Margery (STEGALL) Dodd, the former a native of Mississippi, and the latter of Memphis, Tenn. Mr. and Mrs.
Dodd came to Jackson County at an early day, and settled in Village Township, where Dr. Watson now
resides; they now live in Izard County Ark. After his marriage. Dr. Watson removed to Jackson County, and
engaged in farming in connection with his practice. In 1881 he removed to La Crosse, Izard County, where
be devoted the greater part of his attention to his profession; in 1884 the cyclone destroyed his residence,
and the following year he moved to his present residence. Dr. Watson owns 2,354 acres of land in one tract,
of which 350 acres are under cultivation, and near by has another farm of 1000 acres, with 350 acres more
improved. He has erected a good cotton-gin and grist and saw mill, and has been one of the leading
stockmen of the county. He is a member of the White River Stock Breeders Association, and owns a great
many fine full-blooded horses and cattle and hogs, in which he takes a great deal of pride. Politically he is in
sympathy with the Democratic party, and has twice been a delegate to the State Convention. He is a member
of Philadelphia Lodge No. 127, A. F. & A. M., of Izard County, and also belongs to the I. O. O. F. at
Newport. Six children have been born to Mr. and Mrs, Watson. viz.: Margery Ella, Belle Willie Dodd, who
died in 1881, aged eighteen months: Gracie, Baxter B. and Robert S. Mrs. Watson is a member of the
Methodist Episcopal Church, and also of the Eastern Star Chapter, of Newberg. The Doctor is one [p.911]
of the live and enterprising men of Jackson County, where he is well known for his public spirit and active
interest in every public enterprise.

***

Arkansas Land Records show: NAME--ATLAS J.
BRITTs in Humphreys Co. TN

According to research from a member of the Benton Co. Tenn. Genealogical Society, a John BAKER married Sarah Elizabeth BRITT sometime about 1856. Some of their children were:

Harper Baker
Henry Baker (a.k.a. Tom Stanley)
Laura Baker b. 1860, Benton Co.
James Lafayette Baker b. 1864, Perry Co., d. 1931

I am interested in finding more info about this BRITT family, as well as the BAKER family. Some research shows an Anderson Smith BRITT, who married Mary Wilkes, had a daughter named Elizabeth who married an unknown BAKER. I am trying to find out if this is her or not.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Charles

WILSON, RAY, HENDRIX, O'GUIN

My great grandparents were MARY AGNES WILSON & JESSE EDWARD RAY. They were married January 15, 1913.

MARY AGNES WILSON was born October 22, 1895, in Lauderdale County, TN and died March 2, 1971, in Memphis, TN. She was the daughter of BETTIE HENDRIX and WILLIAM JAMES WILSON. BETTIE HENDRIX was born August 4, 1865 probably in Humphreys County, TN and died June 16, 1931 in Lauderdale County, TN. She is buried in Bethlehem Cemetery in Henning, Lauderdale County, TN. BETTIE HENDRIX was the daughter of JIM HENDRIX, of Humphreys County, TN and an unknown (maybe Eliza) O'GUIN. WILLIAM JAMES WILSON was born October 26, 1858, probably in Houston County or Stewart County, TN and died July 3, 1942, in Lauderdale County. They married October 26, 1886. I believe there is connection between Captain ROBERT C. WILSON of Houston and Lauderdale County, TN and WILLIAM JAMES WILSON.

JESSE EDWARD RAY was born October 20, 1890, probably Lauderdale County, and died June 9, 1952 in Lauderdale County, TN. He was the son of WILLIAM H. RAY, who died in 1902, and MARY E. (maiden name unknown). She was born June 18, 1858 and died after giving birth to JESSE on October 24, 1890.

If anyone out there has any other info they might be able to add, please notify me. I would appreciate it so much. My grandmother doesn't know much information on her family. The info above is all I know. Thanks so much in advance for any help.

Brenda McCaskill
Missing wife of James D. Petty (ca 1820-1850)

I'm looking for the family of Jim Petty's wife, which might have lived in Dickson Co, Hickman Co, or Humphreys Co ca 1820 to 1850. With no direct documentation of her name, I'm looking for information another Dickson/ Hickman/ Humphreys Co family might have.

Seeking probate record. The Petty family appears in Hickman Co and Dickson Co records. So the marriage could have been in Hickman Co. and cousins lived in Humphreys Co. I wonder if any Hickman /Humphreys Co family has any probate records that show a married daughter with the married name Petty or any grandchildren which include W.C. "Bill" Petty or Elizabeth "Bettie" (Petty) Hedge. [Bill married Susan Deshazer from Hickman Co. Bettie married into the Hedge family who lived in Humphreys Co.]

Family moved to TX? Jim Petty was the "head" of an oxen train that moved "seven brothers and cousins and their children & families" to Texas in 1848. I do not know if any of his wife's family would have made that trip. If they did, they probably settled in either Upshur Co TX or Navarro Co TX.

James D. Petty b. ca 1797 Union Co SC moved with his family to Dickson Co TN on the Piney River in 1807--just north of Hickman Co line--and Pettys lived on both sides of the border.

Jim's wife is a mystery. Some reseachers list her as "Sarah" but I have found no documentation to support any name. [With the help of researchers, Sarah Bramlett Petty, who was probably an Edwards, has been eliminated. This "Sarah" might be the source of the speculation that Jim's wife was named Sarah.]

Jim and wife married between the census in 1820 where he was living with his parents Thomas and Jane (Darwin) Petty and 1824 when the oldest child William Carroll Petty was born on the Piney River Petty family farm. There is no record of a marriage in Dickson Co. I cannot find any documentation of his wife's name. She seems to be living at the time of the 1840 census.

Here are the census records--leaving even "Mrs. Petty's" age in doubt because of two different census records for 1830 with different ages. The Pettys lived in one place, but census recorded in different counties over the years.

1810 Census Rutherford Co TN Nashville Division (Image 5)
PETTY Thomas; wife Jane; 5 children including James D. age 10-15

1820 Census Records Hckman Co TN
PETTY Thomas Sr.; wife Jane; 8 children including James D. age 18-26.

1830 Census Dickson Co TN (Images 13 and 45) recorded twice--duplicate census listings—census taken twice (Thomas Petty also):
1st census: 1830 Census Dickson Co TN	p. 314	Ancestry Image 13/73
James Petty	1 1 0 0 0 1(30-40)	2 0 0 0 0 1(30-40)
2nd census: 1830 Census Dickson Co TN	p. 330	Ancestry Image 45/73
James Petty	020001(30-40)	20001(20-30)

1840 Census Dickson Co
James D. Petty Sr 0 0 0 1 0 0 1	1 2 1 0 0 1

I have not located either Jim or a possible wife on any 1850 census. Jim died in 1857 in Navarro Co or Hill Co TX. Any help appreciated.

Sharolyn Petty Wood

Lucinda Harris wife of Jacob Eagle (1799 KY - 1896 MO)

According to the Cassville Republican, Weekly Paper, Feb 27, 1896 - Lucinda died 3/17/1896 at age 103.

Lucinda married Jacob Eagle about 1816. In 1830 they were living in Humphreys Co, TN very near her father, Zephaniah Harris. Jacob died in 1839 and Lucinda is listed as head of the household in Shelby Co, TN in 1840. By 1850 she is the wife of widower James Kennedy and is living in Ouachita Co, AR. In 1860 - and for the rest of her life - Lucinda lived in Barry Co, MO.

She actually was only 95 or 96 when she died. She was the only daughter of Zephaniah and Joanna Mitchell Harris. In 1810 Zephaniah is listed in Shelby Co, KY as having 1 daughter under 10 and 4 sons under 10.

Zephaniah Harris and "Joahana" Mitchell married 12/19/1799 in Jessamine Co, KY. Joanna was the daughter of Daniel (c1750-1823) and Judith Prewitt Mitchell (c1751-before 1820.) Daniel and his father-in-law Michael Prewitt and their extended families were early pioneers of the Shelby Co, KY area.

Possible sons of Zephaniah and Joanna Harris are JS, Daniel, and Rice all found on the same page in the 1830 Humphreys Co, TN census. Rice lived next to Lucinda and Jacob Eagle. John Harris is found on the next page and is the same age as Zephaniah - 50-60. Possible brother?

I'm interested in any information about Zephaniah...

Hi!
Am researching a Columbus JONES who shows up on the 1900 census as a widower, in Humphreys.....
In the 1900 he has Daniel, Louise, Laura, and Columbus jr.
I believe this Columbus Sr. is the one who keeps showing up with his daughter in law, Dora BEECHAM JONES CROWELL in other censuses......
In the 1900 census, it says Columbus Sr. was born June of 1867, but he lists himself as age 72 in the 1930 census which would put his year of birth closer to 1858. His offspring were born between 1885-1889.
With thanks,
Sally

Harris, Marable & Ricketts

Hopefully someone can help me with this or at least steer me in the right direction. Any info at all would help. In looking at the marriage in 1873 of my great grandparents, Taylor Harris, b. abt. 1847 and Sarah Flanigan, b. abt. 1856, I found that the bond was by B. M. Ricketts. Since normally there is some relationship for some one to sign the bond, I looked up Barnabus M. Ricketts and found that he, in the 1870 Census was living with his wife, Mary Marable, a son Frank and what I believe to be two children of Marys' by a prior marriage. The sons were Henry H. Harris, b. abt. 1855 and James Harris, b.abt. 1859. I looked for them in the 1860 Census and found them to be living with her father, Henry H. Marable. Evidently the first husband, _______ Harris had died and she was living with her parents. Does anyone have any idea who the unknown Harris might be? I have tried to find a record of marriage but so far have not been able to. I have looked at a number of different Harris families in Humphreys County and have looked as far as I can at the relationships of the three families. Any info that anyone can give me on any of them would be a help. This is truly my brick wall.

Thanks in advance.
Darla

Has anyone heard stories of Jesse or Frank James playing the fiddle for barn dances in the Humphreys County area? He rented the W.H. Link farm in Humphreys County in 1877 under the name J.D. Howard. This request regards an old family story. I need corroboration that one of them played the fiddle. Any stories about his activities in the area would be greatly appreciated. This may have been in old newspaper clippings. My relatives were Garrett’s and lived on their farm between Bruceton and Buena Vista. My Great Grandfather, Jeremiah Garrett, also owned the Mill at Garrettsburg.I am also looking for pictures of Garrettsburg.Thank you very much. Don Ayer

She was supposedly 1/2 Cherokee and my mother spoke of her family being from Blue Creek and my aunts tell the story of her family coming to visit and scaring them in the woods because of their Indian dress. I would think that since they were on foot that the reservation would not have been that far from Hurricane Mills.

Any information on the family or Blue Creek would be appreciated

I am new to the Genealogy search. Since my family is from the Hurricane Mills area and they didn't own property, they seem to be pretty hard to find. The only thing on this site that I have found were the census records and those don't tell me a lot. I would love some advice on places I can lookup marriage/birth/death certificates. Also if anyone has any information on the Foster, Wright, Rice, or Elliot families from Hurricane Mills between 1890-1940 please let me know. Thanks!

In 1820, Frances Garrett is listed in Part 1 (on the Humphreys County web site) of the census and in 1830, her son, Jesse is also listed in Part 1. Is there any way to translate these into a rough geographic understanding (ie, were they in town or on a farm??).

Petition for Penitentary Pardon of James Martin

I know this is a long shot, but stranger things have happened in genealogy research.

My gg-grandfather was sent to the state penitentary in Davidson County on May 4, 1848 for murder. His home and family were in Davidson County and he was a constable. He married Elizabeth Brinkley. In trying to research this person and the events, I learned through the Tennessee State Library and Archives that my ancestor was released with a General Pardon by Governor Campbell on December 28, 1852. Although sentenced to 20 years, he was released after serving 5 years.

The point of my inquiry is that there was a petition signed on his behalf by over 600 men in 1852 - most of them from Humphreys County. I'm trying to find out what the connection was between my ancestor, the county of Humphreys, and if there are any history buffs or genealogist out there who might have knowledge about the circumstances. According to the county website, there were fires that destroyed court records over the years. I don't know about newspapers. If anyone can help or has suggestions, please contact me via this posting. Thanks so much.

Linda Martin Hart

a few of the names on the petition are Turner, McAdoo, Dunlap, Hall, Lum, Tubb, May, Matlock, Simpson, Box, Baker, McCracken, Browning, Booker, Holland, Bibb, Crockett, and many, many more.

If Benton Co, was once part of Humphreys Co.. (pre 1835) where would the deeds, wills and census be? If the census for Humphreys in 1820 included what is now Benton, is there a way to read them to decipher that? I am looking for some Smiths, that apparently lived there and migragted east to the Tumbling Creek area. Any help is appreciated.

Smiths of Tumbling Crek

I am looking for any decendents or people with information on Howell Smith (bn. 1946), Samuel Smith (about 1840's) or Robert Smith (born pre 1830's) who all at one time lived in the Tumbling Creek Area.

I know the following facts.. Samuel came from Williamson County after the civil war. Howell and some of his kids are buried in the James Cemetery, leading me to beleive he is related to MY Smiths (Thomas, John Marshall Smith), Robert lives nearby on the largest track of land.

I am trying to figure out how they are all related and where they came from BEFORE they arrived in the Tumbling Creek area. I have elicited much of this from the History of Tumbling Creek book and visiting Humphreys Co.

Thanks.
