Do you think the Alston name may have any meaning?
My Richard Campbell of Hickman County 1840, a Rev. War pensioner served under a William Alston and there was Alstons in Fairfield County, SC in the 1800 census. Richard came to the Perry/Hickman/Williamson area about 1808 or so. There were Alston families in Fairfield in 1800 and in Hickman in 1840. There were Alstons in the area as early as 1820 actually in Franklin, Williamson County, where Richard's kids married and they were in Williamson, Maury County where some of the other families from Fairfield settled.
Point is there were several families who migrated from Fairfield County, SC to the area of TN you find your Jones located in. There were several Jones families in Fairfield too. You might search for clues there.
I know what you are going thru with the common name of Jones. If my Smiths weren't so closely attached to my Campbells, I would have the same problems...at least I have been able to trace them for a while.

Richard Campbell says he enlisted in Montgomery County, NC under William Alston...another possible place to look.
Hope this helps.
Linda
