Am looking for more information for the family of Benedict S. Roby, who died in Henry County, Tennessee in November 1925. He is buried in Van Dyke Grove Cemetery.
This is believed to be Benedict Roby, born April 13, 1844 in Nelson County, Kentucky and baptized at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bardstown, Nelson Co., Kentucky on May 14, 1844. If so, his father was Henry Roby (1801-1860), a native of Maryland, and mother Anna Hoagland, born in Kentucky about 1805, and who died before June 1847. Benedict was the youngest of Anna Hoagland Roby's nine children.
At the time of Henry Roby's 1860 death he was survived by his second wife Nancy Shepherd and 12 of his 13 children.
Census records for Benedict Roby show he claimed an April 1844 birth month and year, birth in Kentucky and that his father was born in Maryland and mother born in Kentucky.
Benedict was living in Henry County, Tennessee by March 1867 when he married Lucy Minerva Watkins, born about 1847 in Tennessee, daughter of James Watkins, born about 1812 in North Carolina and his wife Elizabeth. Benedict and Minerva had at least four children, listed in the June 1,1880 census as James E., age 9; Ann E., age 4; Mary, age 2; and Lucy M., born April 1880.
Lucy Minerva Watkins Roby's death date is not yet known, but Benedict remarried in August 1890 to Georgia Mae Sweeney Watkins (1853-1925), widow of his first wife's brother, William James Watkins.
Benedict died of arteriosclerosis on November 10, 1925. The death certificate informant, his daughter Willie Mae Roby, was able to furnish little personal information. Son James Elvis Roby died in June 1944 in Henry County, Tennessee. Daughter Willie Mae died as Willie Mae Carter in 1964 in the same county.
