Contacting Long's Bend Cemetery / Long's Bend Church

Hello,

I'm trying to locate the contact information for Long's Bend Cemetery / Long's Bend Church. I can't find any kind of contact information for whomever maintains the cemetery. I contacted the Hawkins County Historical and Genealogical Society, who apparently have the burial records, and was told that they can't look anything up due to lack of staffing.

This is in regards to the grave of Baker Arnold. I found a photo of his grave on http://www.findagrave.com and saw that he has what looks to be a recent, government-issue plaque for his Civil War service. His grave had also been tended with flowers. I'm hoping to find a descendant like myself who knows of him. I would love to share is military records that I have and I am hoping that someone out there has a photo of him.

Additionally, can anyone tell me if his first wife Luthene Arterburn or his second wife Mary Manis are also buried there? There are several other Manis burials in the same cemetery.

Thanks!
Claire

They never had any children together, but they are living next to William Dalton in 1870, which suggest that Sarah is related to William Dalton. All that have are some clues about her Dalton parentage. Both of them stated in documents that they were never married before.

Can anyone tell me anything about the following families? William and Riley families are listed in the 12 and 13 districts of Hawkins county Tennessee. In the 12th district William list Jessie Overbey as a brother and Rile list Spence as a brother. I believe that Jessie and Spence are sons of Gabriel Overbay but Spence age is not what I have. I have his birth as about 1845. The 13 district list William, Riley and Spencer in the order that I have listed them. They are on the same page that list Samuel Gordon (my great grandfather) and Tipton Gordon who is most likely Samuel’s brother. Tipton’s wife is Catharine Overbay, most likely a cousin of Jessie and Spencer.

1880 United States Federal Census
District 12, Hawkins, Tennessee
William Jones Head	47
Lidia Jones Wife	50
Jessie W.
I'm trying to identify the parents of my GG Grandfather Jacob Harrell. Jacob was born Apr 5, 1845. The first time I find him is in the 1860 Hawkins County Census. He is 15 yrs old and living with John Webb and his family. Jacob married Amanda Williams (daughter of Henderson Williams and Abigail Canton) on Mar 26, 1867 in Hawkins County. They had 6 children - Edna, Laura, William, Jacob, Annis, and Nancy. I've been told that his father's name was Harding, but have found no information to confirm this. If anyone has any information on Jacob's parentage, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, is there really an Opossum / Possum Creek Cemetery or is that another name for one of the Wininger cemeteries? I plan on visiting Hawkins Co. this summer and really want to find these graves! Thanks so much for you help.

Shawn Burks
Gaines Henard married Angeline Snyder 2 May 1899. I cannot find them in a census after that time. There was also a Gaines Henard that married Eva Snider 1 Sep 1902. Is this the same man, perhaps first wife died and he remarried? Was this Eva Snider born Eva Snider or was Eva Snider a married name? Does Gaines Henard have any descendants? Where are he and his wives (if he is the same man) buried? Any help on this family would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am looking for information on George Miller of Russell Co, VA and the part of Hawkins Co, TN which later became Hancock Co, TN.

In the 1840 census George Miller is listed in Hawkins Co, TN and in the 1850 Hancock Co, TN census in the War Gap District in household 280 as George Miller age 70, Sarah age 65, Ester age 29, Celia age 18, Enoch age 14, Rachel age 2 (granddaughter), and Benjamin Dollarhide laborer age 30. Birthplace listed as NC for all except Rachel who was born in TN.

George Miller appears before 1799 along with Stephen Miller many times in the early Russell Co, VA Law Order Books 2 & 3 and in the Russell Co, VA Deed Book 3 where he is listed as being late of Russell Co in 1800. George Miller, Stephen Miller, and William Miller also appear on the Russell Co, VA Personal Property Tax lists in the Lower District during 1794-1799.

Does anyone have any information on George Miller or these Miller families?

I would like to hire a researcher in Hawkins County to help me find early references to a Nugent/Davis family.

James and Mary (Jenkins) Nugent arrived in Hawkins Co., TN, by 1809, where James purchased land near the mouth of Caney Creek on Holston River. He farmed and built mills. He died in 1819.

It is thought that two of his children married persons of Cherokee ancestry: Mary Nugent who married Briant Davis and Edward Nugent who married Anastatia Everrett (in 1825).

Briant and Mary Davis' son George Washington Davis (born abt 1833 in Hawkins Co.) married Dianna Arbell Gulley 5 SEP 1854 in Hawkins Co., TN, and later removed to Overton county, TN, and on to southern Illinois.

The family firmly believes that Briant Davis was Cherokee. I am looking for some reference to confirm this.

Thank you for any help or guidance you can give me.

Searching for any information on or descendants of Oliver Jenkins, b. 1770s, who lived in Henry Co., VA, from the 1790s through 1818, when he sold out and moved to Hawkins Co., TN. Counted in Hawkins in 1830 as white and in 1840 as a free person of color (possibly Melungeon). Presumably died sometime in the 1840s. Brothers Joseph and William may also have moved to Hawkins; members of the Bunch and Moore families also made the move about the same time. Any help greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know of a Dock Maness? I have a death record for Hattie Maness Klepper, spouse of Arch L Klepper of Hawkins County, TN. Hattie Maness Klepper died 12 March 1927 in Mercer County, WV. Dock Maness is listed as her father and Mother's name is unknown.

I believe that I have found the correct Hattie J Maness living with her brother James R [Robert] Maness in the 1910 Hawkins County, TN census. I find Robert [James R] again in the 1930 Hawkins County,TN census. But have not found James Robert Maness in the 1920 census nor have I found a census with a family that includes Hattie and James Robert prior to 1910. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Pattie

Hello listers,

I am looking for info on my G-G-G- grandfather, Fountain Norton. I find him in the 1836 tax rolls (district 13) of Hawkins County, and again on the 1840 census. Family history, and later census records say he was born in VA, and married to Sarah ?, with their first son, Henderson, born about 1834. Their is also a Thomas Norton, in district 13, of the 1836 tax rolls, and I am trying to find out if there is any connection to the two - Father, brother, etc. Can anyone help me? Any info would be appreciated. Fountain is rather illusive. We find him in the 1840 census in Hawkins, 1850 census in Grainger, 1860 in Claiborne, In 1870, he had moved to Garrard County KY, and in 1880 to Boyle co., KY. After that we again lose record of him. Again, any info would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

I have been looking for years for the Abraham Ellis family. There were four brothers - John, William, Abraham and Peter, there may have been many more siblings, I only know of these four. They came from Botetourt County, Va, lived in Greenbriar County, WV and then in Hawkins County, TN. My GGGfather was named Peter Ellis and was the son of Abraham Ellis. I can find no prior information on them before Va...do not know their parents or where they are from.

In 1844, I have found deeds in Hawkins County, TN from a Guy Ellis to John Ellis, one of the brothers. They also intermarried with the Christopher Wilflee/Wilfley family and there was a Betsy Rhodes and Mary Truesdale Robards/Roberts married into the family as well as Abraham's one wife, Barbara Lee, supposedly related to Robert E. Lee. There was also a mention of William Ellis and wife Elizabeth who may have been one of the brothers in Hawkins County. Peter and Abraham moved on to Missouri but I would like to find who their parents were. Sound familiar to anyway? Am beginning to think they were hatched under a rock.

They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 155 families from New York that have not been located. There are seven families from Erie County that have not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net

I have found a family in the 1930 census with a Jake Jr. who was one month old when the census was taken. The father was Jake, the mother was Coral, siblings were Frances and Henry. All were from Tennessee except Jake Jr. Although the birth date of the father in the SSDI does not match the age in the 1930 census it seems worth trying to find a death notice to see if this is the correct family so that Jacob Webster can be laid to rest after such a sacrifice and so many years.

Sheila Sullivan in Friendly Western New York
I am searching for any information on a Collins family who was born in Hancock County, Tn., but later moved to Hawkins & Sullivan County, Tn. My Father's name was James Henry Collins. On his Death Certificate his Mother was listed as Polly Collins, his Father listed as Thomas Collins. My Father's sister, Mary Jane Collins' Death Certificate listed her Mother as Polly Radar. We are not sure if she was Polly Collins & married a Radar or what. Mary Jane Collins married their cousin, George Mack Collins. George Mack Collins had brothers, Sam & Charlie Collins. Sam had 2 sons, Bethel & Harry Collins, both lived in Church Hill. Charlie had a son, Ross & Daughter, Mabel. My Father also had a brother named Charlie, whom we know had children living in the Knoxville area & possible Ohio. My Uncle Charlie (my Father's brother) also married their cousin, Mary Collins. My Father also had a sister, Sarah Denton, who had a son, John McGinnis who lived in the Jefferson City area. I have also posted this information on the Hancock County Page for any information that might help me. I Will certainly appreciate any help. Please feel free to e-mail me!
Richard, Martin, or James COLE

I'm interested in finding information about this Cole family. They were connected in some way to my family, the Harrells, but I've not quite figured out how yet. They were long-term neighbors in Hawkins (now Hamblen Co.) near Russellville, TN. In 1850, Richard, age 60 is next door to presumably two sons, Martin age 34 and James age 38. Richard Cole appears as early as 1830 in Hawkins and is last found in the 1860 census living with Martin Cole. He was a blacksmith.
I'm also interested in Amanda Cole (Martin's daughter?) and husband Elbert Marshall. George Harrell married first Catharine Unknown and second, Eliza Marshall. I'm theorizing that the Cole -Harrell connections go back to VA and beyond, but I still have a lot of dots to connect. Thanks for any help.

I am trying to locate the ancestors and descendants of William Foster HILL, born about 1774 in North Carolina. He had at least one son born in Virginia in 1805. William F. is found in Sullivan Co., Tennessee (next door to Hawkins) in the 1830 and 1840 Census. I have noted HILL families in the Census index for Hawkins Co., and wonder if they may have been related. My branch of the HILL line married into the CHRISTIAN and SMALLWOOD families, among others, while in the East Tennessee area.

Susan was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Does anyone know?

I want to order a death certificate online, but they want to know what city he died in. All I have is a obit in the Kingsport Times, that says Rogersville - but it states that he "died near here" not that he lived in Rogersville. So I'm trying to figure out the location of where he died.

2) Longs Bend Cemetery. Is this located at Longs Bend Church?

I'm trying to gather information on my grandfather. These are the solid facts that I have:

Born May 19, 1866
Died June 20, 1940

Looking at census records there is some question about whether he was born in North Carolinia, or Tennessee, even Virgina - the records I have been able to dig up are very confusing - most names match, but places of birth do not.

Loose Facts:

My grandfathers fathers name was possibly Jefferson or Nataniel Jefferson Chaney. My grandfather had been married once previously to someone possibly named Cordie - they had a son Willian Eldridge Chaney - I recognize the name because my father has mentioned it before. He remarried Nola Jones & they had my father John Henry Chaney Jr.

John H Chaney Senior died when my father was very young, so I can't get much information from him. John H Chaney is buried at a small cemetary somewhere outside Rogersville Tennessee, along with my grandmother Nola.

Can anyone help fill in some of the blanks here? Any help would be appreciated.

Looking for information on my GG Grandmother Emaline Parrott. Emaline was the daughter of William Parrott & Charlotte Setzer (both Wm. & Charlotte born about 1815 in NC). Emaline was born about 1839. She married Fielding Fulps/Felps on Apr 24, 1859 in Hawkins County TN. She and Fielding appear in the 1860 Hawkins County Census with two children - James 3 yrs old & William - a few months old. I'm unable to locate Fielding or Emaline after that. My Great Grandmother appears in the 1880 census as Luly E. (Elizabeth) Fulps - 9 yrs old - orphan. I have been unable to find out what happened to Emaline, Fielding, and their other children (James & William). Does anyone have any info on this family?

Speculation on Russell Lawson's father

While trying to locate my great grandfather William Clemmons Lawson, the son of my gg-grandfather Russell Lawson, in the 1880 Hawkins Co. census I came across a possible clue as to Russell's father. I couldn't find William Clemmons Lawson living with his father Russell or by himself. He would have been about 15 years old, plus or minus. I found a William Lawson age 16 listed as a nephew in Pleasant Lawson's household. If this is William Clemmons, then that means that Russell was Pleasant's brother (or half brother) and that Russell's father was Jackson Lawson. Jackson would have had to have fathered Russell before he married Anna Manis. I did some searching around on the web and came up with some info that seems to support this theory, for instance Sam Lawson gave some names of witnesses in a trial in 1849 as "Alem, Thomas, Peter, Jackson, Meredith, and Russell Lawson" stating that he felt that this was "one Lawson family." Also there are marriage bonds suggesting that Jackson Lawson was related to Jesse Manis (possibly through Jesse's wife Alsey Lawson) since Jackson Lawson provided bond to Jesse's sons Jesse and Sterling Manis. This would explain why Russell was living in Clinton Manis' household in the 1850 census, Clinton being another of Jesse's sons. Another interesing thing, in the 1870 District 3 census, Russell Lawson lived in household 56 and Jackson lawson in household 55. If anyone has any input on all this, I'd really be interested in hearing it.

Thanks,
Mark Lawson

Jonathan Anderson, Elen Anderson, Aaron Anderson, Rhoda Anderson

I found a Hawkins County Chancery Court record that seems to indicate that Aaron Anderson and our mysterious Rhoda Anderson were closely related to Jonathan Anderson. We know that Jonathan Anderson gave property to Elen Anderson as his only son. We know that a John Anderson who lived in same district as Jonathan Anderson in 1836 but was gone in 1840 gave property to Aaron Anderson before 1840, and that the property included the place where Rhoda Anderson lived. We know that Aaron Anderson was illegitimate. Taken as a whole, it seems to suggest that John Anderson may have been an unknown son of Jonathan Anderson, and perhaps the husband of Rhoda Anderson. The Court minutes are below. A prior filing by Sizemore specifically states it is about the Estate of Jonathan Anderson.

Hawkins County Chancery Court
February Term 1852

Solomon Sizemore vs Elen Anderson and others

In this cause cessions? appearing to the Sub?? of the Court disclosed by the affidavit of the Complainant his is permitted to take the depositions of George Anderson, John Hurd, Sarah Hurd, James Ford, John?
Lula Elizabeth Parrott Carpenter

I'm trying to find the father of my G Grandmother Lula Elizabeth Parrott Carpenter. She was born Apr 28, 1871 in Hawkins County TN. Her Death Certificate states that Emmaline Parrott was her mother and her father is UNKNOWN. Emmaline was the daughter of William Parrott and Charlotte Setzer (she appears in the 1850 census and also on her marriage record as Eveline Parrott). Emmaline Parrott married Fielding Felps/Fulps in 1859 in Hawkins County. They appear in the 1860 census with two children, James - 3 yrs old and William - just a few months old. Elizabeth was raised by John Coleman Hicks and his wife Jane Wolfe. She appears in the 1880 Hawkins County Census as Luly E. Felps - 9 yrs old. She is listed as an orphan. I've been unable to find out what happened to Emmaline or Fielding after 1860. I've always been told that Elizabeth was 1/2 Cherokee. She married Gabriel Carpenter in 1885 when she was 14 years old. Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
