Martha 'Mattie' Jane Stanfill Clark Coleman 1881 - 1971

Looking for information on:
William ‘Elijah’ Clark, Reverend was born on March 12, 1876 in Henderson County, Tennessee and died March 01, 1908 in Sardis, Henderson County, Tennessee at the age of 32 - just 8 years after he had married and the same year his last child, Luna, was born;
he married Martha “Mattie” Jane Stanfill (later Coleman) who was born on November 24, 1881 in Henderson County, Tennessee – married on September 20, 1900 in Henderson County - their gravestones are together in the Sardis Cemetery and it is written:
Mattie Coleman Clark - she died September 01, 1971 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee at the age of 90 – she is shown as dying in a Memphis retirement home.
(She had made Memphis her home with her second husband, thought to have been a Mr. Coleman, also a Methodist Preacher.)
Her family’s farm was next door to the Clark farm. In the 1900 Census at age 24 he was living with his sister, Artie ‘Missie’ Clark and her husband John A. Montgomery on their farm, just prior to his marriage.
Elijah was a Methodist Preacher, probably around Sardis, Tennessee, but maybe in the Shady Hill or Crane Creek area.
As a widow, Mattie lived next door to her parents in the 1910 census with her four young children;
she was living in Sardis Town in the 1920 Census with her children,
so she apparently married second Mr. Coleman – married after 1920 – she was 39 in 1920.
Any help with this family would be appreciated,
lindajcox3@hotmail.com

I am trying to find information on a gr, gr, gr uncle. His name was John Calvin "Calvin" Williamson. He was born around 1872 probably in Hardin Co., TN. His parents were George W. and Talisa Elizabeth (Hopper) Williamson. I cannot find him on any census. The only record I have of him is a listing on his father's Civil War Pension Applicatn. He is listed on there with his siblings. I have been told by several family members that he went into the mountains one day and was never heard from again. If anyone has any information about him, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks
HARDIN CO., TN AND LAUDERDALE CO., AL CEMETERIES

Hi;
I was wondering if anyone can tell me which of the Cemeteries listed on the 1980 Hardin County Cemetery Census are actually in Lauderdale County Alabama. I got my family tree program quite messed up as some of the cemeteries listed on the 1980 Hardin Co., Cemetery Census are not in Hardin Co., but are in Lauderdale Co., AL.
Is Wesley Chapel in Hardin Co., TN or Lauderdale Co., AL? I assumed that Waites Cemetery was in Hardin Co., TN because it was listed as such on the 1980 Cemetery Census and it's actually in Lauderdale Co., AL.
I understand that Hardin Co., and Lauderdale Co., AL are line to line, but they really should be separated or marked for those of us who are not familiar with the different Cemeteries in TN and AL. I had family dying in AL and buried in TN.
Please don't take me wrong, I love the 1980 Cemetery Census for Hardin Co., it has helped me a lot, and is a great tool, but not having the Cemeteries that are in fact in AL marked as such really got things confused.
I am very grateful to some kind people who helped me to figure out that Waites Cemetery was in AL and not Hardin Co., TN. Now I am having the same problem with Wesley Chapel. And I would appreciate any help.
Thnaks to everyone who helped get me straightened out.
Charlotte

Hello, Does anyone out there have access to cemetery books of Hardin Co TN? I have Koonce/Koons ancestors that I believe died in Hardin Co TN. I would very much appreciate if someone would check in the cemetery books to see if any of my Koonce relatives are buried there. I find them on the 1850 Census, then then just dissappear. I am not familiar with Hardin Co or the cemeteries there. I can't seem to find a listing of them anywhere on line. If anyone knows of 1, please share. I noticed someone on the message board talks about a Cemetery Census..What is that & where can I find it?

Thanks muchly,
Joan Morris

On the 1900 census, Mattie McClain, born in 1859 in Lauderdale Co., AL, is living with her husband, John Wilson McClain in Hardin Co., TN. They moved there around 1890. On the 1910 census, Mattie is married to an "Unknown" Scott and is living in Mississippi Co., AR., but he is not listed living with her. If anyone can help me to find out who the Unknown Scott is that she married, I would really appreciate it. Mattie McClain Scott was my gr grandmother.
Thanks
Charlotte McClain Christensen

She was born in 1814 in TN. I don't know when she died. She married John McClain/McLane in Lauderdale CO., AL on July 23, 1836. John and Shorty are on the 1840-1860 censues there. I can't find them in Lauderdale Co.
Shorty and John's son, John Wilson McClain, (my gr grandfather) moved to Hardin Co., TN around 1888. He and wife, Mattie, along with children, Clarence, Minnie B, Ada Jane and Jesse Garland, are on the 1900 census there.
Seeking info on Zola Palmer. She was born in Webb City, MO and died in Jackson, TN in a nursing home in Jan, 1972. I know that she had 2 brothers: Pallas & Byrtus. Pallas died in 1981 and Byrtus died in 1975 in Webb City. Pallas probably died in TN too. She was a well-known organist. I'm attempting to locate ANY family members of this woman who has a connection to my great uncle, Harry Simon of Carterville & Webb City, MO areas. Please reply if any of these names "ring any bells". Thanks.

I have an affidavit for Nancy Williamson signed by W. M. or Wm. Outlaw who was living in Saltillo in Hardin Co., TN. dated July 25, 1890. The affadavit was signed in Hardin Co. It says that he was accquainted with William Williamson's widow, Nancy Bryant Williamson, and that they lived close to each other in the same neighborhood. He said that he knew they were married and she had not remarried since William's death.
I also found a death notice for a Dora Outlaw Bryant, daughter of William Outlaw and wife of John Bryant of Sardis. She died Nov 15, 1909. Nancy Williamson's maiden name was Bryant and I am wondering if they are connected by marriage.
I am trying to find the parents/Siblings of Nancy Bryant Williamson and her husband, William W. Williamson. I am hoping that the Outlaw family may have some information on the Bryant's since they knew Nancy and Dora married a Bryant. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Guinn/Gwinn family of Champion Guinn and children

I'm looking for the parents, sisters and brothers of Champion Guinn/Gwinn b. ca. 1823/24 in Tennesee who lived in Franklin and Hardin Counties as an adult. I'm also looking for the names and birthdates, etc. of all his children by his first wife, Rebecca Ann Jackson and what became of them. I only have 2 names and some people claim there were at least 2 more. I have George M. Guinn/Gwinn and Sarah E. Guinn/Gwinn from the 1850 census and can't find them after that. I descend from his second wife Nancy Ellen Dunlap whom he married in Cheatham County (eloped with her with the help of one of her aunts)on January 1, 1856. Nancy was from the Dunlap family of Montgomery, Humphreys, Haywood and Lauderdale Counties, descendants of Samuel Dunlap the Revolutionary war veteran and his son William and grandson William Anderson David Dunlap. Nancy had 2 children with Champion Guinn in Osceola, Missour, then he was wounded mortally in Senator Lane's raid on Osceola on September 23, 1861 and died November 24, 1861. Nancy married 2nd, Micajah Dark, Champion Guinn's best friend in the Osceola area whom he'd known previously in Tennessee, somehow. Champion Guinn was a well known fiddle player, according to family notes and played for social events in several counties in west-central and western Tennessee.

Thanks for any help on this. Alexander Henry was in the household of Sarah Henry Wirt, widow of John T. Wirt, formerly of Botetourt Co. VA.

The 1840 Hardin Co. Census finds Alexander Henry 20-30 married and living next door to Sarah Wirt.

Following the 1840 Census above, I've been unable to locate any documents regarding Alexander Henry.

I am about 700 miles away in Illinois, and have just been thrown a curve ball. I have for years thought my Gr Gr Grandfather to be Henry C. Prince, yesterday I got an email from another researcher saying I am likely wrong. He claim the marriage certificate for H.C Prince and his wife, Sarah Alice McDonald is listed as Hardy C Prince. I am in hopes as that someone in Hardin County could possibly go check this for me. I would greatly appreciate it. The date of marriage I have on file is Aug 24 1882. I have been at a roadblock for 11 years on this line, and this may be the break I need.

Looking for information on Almus Wilson and Martha Jane Burpoe Wilson, Hardin or Wayne County, TN. Their daughter, Effie Leonard Wilson was my grandmother, B: about 1893, D: May 1973 in Florence, AL. Effie Leonard Wilson was in an old newspaper photo of Leatherwood School in 1905, believed to be in Hardin County as the back of the photo has an ad for a 1957 Chevrolet, at Yeiser Chevrolet.

Effie Leonard Wilson is listed in the 1910 Wayne County census (Age 18) living in the household of John Blacksher. She is listed as his niece.

It is known from Family Bible records that Almus Arthur Wilson, father of Effie Leonard Wilson died in 1908. It is not known why Effie Wilson was living with the Blacksher family in 1910. It is also assumed that Lettie Wilson, also listed as a niece of John Blacksher was probably Effie Wilson’s sister. There is a Mattie Wilson , age 43, in the 1910 Wayne County, Tennessee census listed as an aunt of a family named Olive/Oliver in which she resided in 1910. She is next found in the 1930 census (age 62) in Baldwyn County, Mississippi living with her daughter (Effie Leonard Wilson Falls) and son-in-law, Fletcher Alex Falls.
I have an affidavit for a Widows Pension for Nancy Williamson signed by Thomas S. Spencer and N. T. Norwood dated July 11, 1866. The affadavit was signed in Hardin Co. It says that they were accquainted with William Williamson and his widow, Nancy Bryant Williamson, and that they knew they were married and she was who she claimed to be.
William and Nancy Bryant Williamson's son, George W. Williamson, was my gr, gr grandfather. George Williamson married Talisa Elizabeth Hopper in 1866 in Hardin Co.
Their daughter, Mary "Mollie" Williamson, married William LaFate Creasy and N.T. (Nathan Thomas) Norwood's son, Fletcher Norwood, married Mary Creasy, who was William Lafate Creasy's sister. There were three Norwood's in the same Regiment and probably the same Company as William W. and George W. Williamson. One is a Thomas Norwood. I believe that this is Nathan Thomas Norwood who signed this and another affadavit attesting to William's death.
I am trying to find who William W. Williamson's parents/siblings were. I am hoping that maybe the Spencer and Norwood families may have some knowledge of him since these two say that they were well accquainted with them. I would appreciate any help.
I have an affidavit testifying to the fact that Robert Chandler and Francis Fowler were personaly accquainted with my gr, gr, gr grandfather, William W. Williamson, and his wife, Nancy Bryant Williamson, before he went into the union Army and that they also personally knew that they were man and wife. And who their children were. Williamson, was my gr, gr grandfather. George Williamson married Talisa Elizabeth Hopper in 1866 in Hardin Co.
Robert Chandler is related by marriage through the Dollar and Scott families to my Williamson Family. Robert Chandler Sr.'s wife, was a Cynthia/Cynthy Bryant who I believe is the sister of my gr, gr, gr grandmother, Nancy Bryant Williamson, although I have not been able to prove that yet.
I am trying to find who William W.
Hi;
I am trying to find information on the parents of my gr, gr, gr grandfather, William W. Williamson, who was living in Henderson Co., TN on the 1850 and 1860 censuses. He was born between 1809-1818 in Rutherford Co., TN according to his Civil War papers. He married Nancy Bryant in McNairy Co., TN in May of 1834.
William and his son, George W. Williamson, who was my gr, gr grandfather, both enlisted in the Union Army at Lexington in Henderson Co., in 1862. They were both in the 7th Regiment, TN Cavalry, Co. H. Both were captured at Trenton in June of 1862 by CSA General, Nathan Bedford Forrest, and held prisoner. They were paroled back to their Regiment in Dec. of 1862. They were at Camp Chase in Ohio until July of 1863. While traveling to his next posting, William fell in with some other Union Soldiers and was in a skirmish outside Saltillo in Hardin Co. William was shot and killed by the Rebel soldiers in Aug of 1864. He is buried in Liberty Cemetery in Hardin Co. His widow, Nancy Bryant Williamson moved to Hardin Co. later. She and some of their children are there on the 1870 census. She is buried next to William in Liberty Cemetery.
I have an affidavit testifying to William's death signed by Hiram and William Willis, who were living in Hardin Co. at the time. It says that they were well accquainted with William Williamson and of their own knowledge know that he was killed on or about tha 25th day of Aug, 1864. They said that they saw him after he was killed.
William's son, George W. Williamson, was captured a second time at Union City and sent to Andersonville Prison in Georgia. He spent 13 months there.
George Williamson married Talisa Elizabeth Hopper in 1866 in Hardin Co.
Talisa's brother, Merida E. Hopper, married a Tennessee Caldonia Willis in 1870 in Hardin Co., TN. I would also like to know if she was related to this Hiram and William Willis.
I anyone has any information on these Williamson's, Bryant's or Hopper's, I would appreciate any help in finding out anything about them. Thank you.
Charlotte Christensen

Hello,

I am looking for the burial place and death dates for William Henry Harbin and his wife Mary Emily (Martin) Harbin. The last trace I can find of them is the 1910 Hardin County census, so they died after 1910. Is there an index for death certificates for Tennesseee?

Henry was born September 1858 and Mary was born in June of 1860 (though in 1900, she was listed as being born in October of 1860).

Their children are: Martha Jane (1879), Rhoda E. (1884), Emma (1889), Abram (1892), Mary Alma (1895), Mandy (1897), and Dora (about 1902).

The only other information I have on this family is the wife (Rose Etta) and children of Abram Harbin.

Trying to find ancestors of Churchwell Bell Smallwood (b abt 1810) who lived most of life in McNairy Co. TN - fairly certain that Churchwell and Bell are family surnames. There are many Churchwells and Bells in Hardin Co which McNairy Co grew out of in 1823. Thought that there may be a connection of the Smallwoods to Churchwells and Bells in Hardin Co. There are many of us trying to get find ancestors of Churchwell and his brother Andy K. (b about 1805). We would appreciate any help with finding them. Regards, Catherine

I am gathering information on the history of Shady Grove Cemetery just outside of Saltillo, TN and any genealogy connections to people buried there. I have a fair amount, but trying to establish connections and interconnections to all of the various families buried there. I have a 1995 Shady Grove Cemetery Census that I published as well as updates to current time if anyone would like lookups or pictures of the headstone markers. Would also like pictures of anything in the cemetery at any dates as well as bits and pieces of information. Also interested in other area cemeteries and their history and genealogy. R.
Dicy ( Ludicy, Laodecia ) WHITE - Petition for Dower - Nov 1833

I have a copy of a clipping from a newspaper in 1833, probably the Windsor Herald of Bertie Co., NC.

STATE of NORTH CAROLINA, Bertie County.
Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, November Term, 1833.
..... Dicy WHITE ....}
........... to ...............} Petition for Dower
...... The Court .......}
It appearing to the satisfaction of the Court, that Thomas LAYTON and wife Priscilla, Peter WHITE, John WHITE, George WHITE, Eleanor WELLS, and Perry WHITE and wife Penelope, are residents of the western country and without the limits of this State. It is therefore ordered, that publication be made in the Windsor Herald as to the said LAYTON and wife, Peter, John and George WHITE, Eleanor WELLS and Perry WHITE and wife, that unless they make their personal appearance at our next Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, to be held for the county of Bertie, at the Court House in Windsor, on the second Monday of February next, judgment, pro confesso, will be taken against them by default, and the prayer of the petitioner granted.
By order of Court.
Jona. S. Tayloe, Clerk.

Laodecia ( Dicy ) was daughter of William White of Bertie Co., NC, according to his WILL. Some of her brothers lived in Hardin Co., TN. These mentioned are most likely Reuben's relatives and also heirs to the land. They could be either siblings OR older children of his by an earlier marriage. I lean toward that idea due to his age in earlier census.
Most of these mentioned were in Hardin County by 1840 and Dicy came with her remaining children in the early 1840's, possibly 1843 or 1844.
John White's land was adjoining Perry White in 1837, but where is Perry White after that?

His wife: Iola Jane Glidewell - b: 25 FEB 1880 in Illinois d: 23 AUG 1963 in Jonesboro, Arkansas. I did a search and think I found his parents (which is my great great grandparents): William T. Glidewell and a Sarah C. Loyd who got married in Hardin 12 NOV 1881. I also found a US WWII draft registration card for my great grandfather at ancestry.com. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I don't get to the internet that often but do check my email on my mobile phone, so if you find something please email me at yellowhawk38@hotmail.com or atleast email me there and let me know that you had posted something here. Thanks!

Byrds and Averetts in Hardin, 1800s, early 1900s

My g-grandfather Wm. M. Byrd (1834-1915) was born in Hardin, was left an orphan and raised by members of the Hardin family that gave the county its name. Hardin and Byrd family burial plots are next to each other in the Mt.Carmel cenetery. Does anyone know if there was a blood connection between the Byrds and Hardins? And where did the Byrds live before coming to Hardin Co.? Wm. Byrd married (about 1857) Mary F. Averett of Wayne Co., TN, whose brother (or other close relative) was a Unionist during the Civil War and a judge.Info on any of the three families will be most welcome and I will give what I have on them. Thanks.

Recently discovered a link to Elijah Harbor Covey (born about 1860 in Hardin county) his second marriage was to a "Tommie Frazier" in 1880 in Hardin. She and Elijah had two children and then she died before the 1900 census. According to online information about the family, one of their sons, William Carl Covey returned to Hardin county (after soujourns in AR, TX and OK) and he died about 1951 in Hardin county.

I have tried to access the 1980 Hardin county Cemetery records and the link for the Covey Surname is broken, so I was hoping someone might have a printed list of this Covey family in Hardin county.

Any help appreciated!
-Beryl Reid

My ggrandfather is Henry Bascon Green, b1850,MD, wife's name is Cornelia ---, b 1855. I have been told that it is Gant but not sure of the spelling. What I do know for certain is that they had children born in TN. James A., Tennie, Maud, Pearl, Ruby, Ida, and my grandmother Myrtle Sue Green, b 2 July 1893. I am hoping that someone can locate them through marriage or birth. Thanks, Jimmy

POW/MIA Korean War, JULIAN KENDRICK PARSONS

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Hardin County, TN as his home of record.

Soldier:Julian Kendrick Parsons
Born:July 28, 1932, Caucasian
Date of loss: November 30, 1950, Captured (POW) in North Korea. His remains were never recovered.

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 35 families in Ohio that have not been located. There is one family from Hardin County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-233
I am searching for information on the John and Rebecca Smith family in the 1850 Hardin Co Census. I think they may have been my 3g-grandparents. My gg-grandfather Calvin Smith listed in the Carroll Co AR 1860 census as 30 yrs of age with wife Sarah and 3 dau., was from TN. Also living with them was a Thomas Rose and wife Lucinda. I have traced Thomas back to Hardin Co TN. I found Calvin Smith 22 yrs of age in the 1850 Hardin Co Census. Son of John and Rebecca Smith. Calvin was killed in 1863, probably in the War, but no proof yet. If anyone has any information to prove or disprove my assumptions please let me know. Thank you.
