Wagon Trains / Robertson Deaths?

Much of my family research comes back to rely on the mysterious wagon train my g-g-grandfather, R. Frank Hodnett, is said to have traveled on with his mother, half brother, and step-father. This took place some time in the 1850's- 1860's.

The story goes that Frank and his family set out from Georgia for an unknown western location. His step-father, Mr. Robertson, took ill in Tennessee. Frank's mother, M.A.(We only have her initials, no full or maiden name), stopped in Tennessee with her family to care for Mr. Robertson. The wagon train continued on, and Mr. Robertson eventually went on to die. The first record I have for any of them is 1870, and by then Frank is 17. M.A. never remarried.

Is there anyway of knowing what wagon trains went through the Hardeman county area? We know this one originated in Georgia, but no idea exactly where.

Also, I'm hoping I can possibly find a death record for our mysterious Mr. Robertson. He is not directly related, but having his name may greatly help find early records for R. Frank Hodnett.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

John McKee married Diana C. Goodwin September 20 1832 in Hardeman Co TN, Thos. J. Whitlock bondsman, Jas Simpson MG. There are no McKees listed on the 1840 Census Index in Hardeman Co TN. Does anyone have the slightest, wildest clue where they might have gone? I have zero other information for either of them, would like to know where John came from, when and where he was born, who were his parents, brothers, sisters. (Not asking much, huh? Guess we are all looking for that for each ancestor.) Also have a William McKee m. Mary Ann Kerly January 1833. Don't know if the McKees were related to each other--it would seem they would have to be but don't know. Would really appreciate any clues anyone has or suggestions.

My husband was born in Hardeman Co Tn as was his father, grandfather and two greats grandfather back thru 1847, Have harvested much McKee data there if anyone would like to look at it let me know. Grandmothers are Bizzell, Sellers, Pipkin (related to Jackson Family of the www.gonetotexas.com site-an awesome personal family history saga) and Herriman, Ervin among others.

I am seeking information on the family of William Galloway. He was born ca 1789, married Susannah Cox ca 1810. They had three children William, b. ca 1812, Mary,b. ca 1815. and Robert, b. 1817. According to family tradition, William Galloway died around 1819 in Limestone County, AL. After his death the family moved to Hardeman County, TN. I am trying to find information on William's place of birth and his parents. Some researchers think his father was Marshall Galloway (1760-1827),a Revolutionary War soldier buried in Sullivan County, TN, but this has not been proven. Any help, suggestions will be appreciated. Also does anyone know how I might contact Mrs. James Raines, who wrote the article about William Galloway's family in the Hardeman County history book?
Margie
Two Tate girls married two of our Hazlewood brothers in Hardeman Co., TN.
I do not yet know whether they are sisters or cousins, but I am sure
that they must be closely related.

Catherine H. Tate married the older brother, Joseph Hazlewood, on 1 June 1826. She was born in North Carolina on 27 October 1808, according to a Bible record published in Jackson, Madison Co., TN. By January 1834 she had died after the birth of one daughter, Letitia Frances Tate. I have seen some LDS records that state that her parents were Francis and Phebe Tate, though this does not seem to be conclusively proven.

The other young woman was Mary Ann Tate, born about 1800-1805,
who married my greatgreatgreatgrandfather William Hazlewood on 29 May 1827. She seems to have been his second wife, as his first child, Thomas Benton Hazlewood, was born about February 1826. We think that this child's mother's name was Priscilla Powell and, until recently, thought that she was the mother of my ancestress, Mary Jane Hazlewood, born in September 1828 in Lawrence Co., AL. A cousin discovered William's marriage to Mary Ann Tate
in the book _Hulls' Heritage_ by Carolyn Hull Estes.

If in your subsequent research you have found any information that seems to connect to these Tates, I will certainly appreciate hearing from you.

Kathryn Schultz
kathysschultz@earthlink.net

I would like more information on James Anderson Thompson of Hardeman County in the Whiteville area. He was married to Lillian B. (don't know what the "B" stands for as of yet). Her maiden name is Kee. She was born November 2, 1913 and passed away September 8, 2001. Its believed that she was born in Fayette County that boarders Hardeman County. James (known by most people as Anderson) was born April 16, 1915 and passed away April 28, 1993. Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated. My realationship is the granddaughter but I was to young to know much about them before they passed. Thanks so much! My e-mail address is aintregular@comcast.net

William Dixon after 1861?

I am looking for information on what happened to William Dixon and his wife after 1861. William Dixon born 1812 in NC married Eliza Jones Deming on July 23, 1835 in Chatham Co. NC. He came to Hardeman Co. about 1837. He and his family appear in Hardeman Co Census in 1840, 1850, and 1860. He owned property in Hardeman Co. next to his mother-in-law Elizabeth Deming. William and his wife Eliza had 10 children.

They are as follows:
Elizabeth A. (McClendon) Dixon b 1836, Emprien J. Dixon b. 1836 female, Susan (Jones) Dixon b. 1840, Thomas W. Dixon b. 1844, Sara Frances (McClendon) Dixon b. 1847, James H. Dixon b. 1850, Nancy J. (Johnson) Dixon b. 1852, George W. Dixon b. 1853, Harriet Caroline (McClendon) Dixon b. 1857, and William Fisher Dixon b. 1859.

William and his wife Eliza and some of their children completely disappeared after 1861 during the Civil War. Later Eliza Dixon did sell some property in her name in 1881 in Hardeman Co. (I assume he had died by then), and I am aware that their son, Thomas, put an obituary in the Bolivar Bulletin paper stating Mrs. E. J. Dixon died about Aug 1, 1886, but no location was mentioned. Neither Eliza nor William ever appears in any census after 1860. I am also interested in William Dixon before he married Eliza in 1835, but this would have been in North Carolina. Any information would be appreciated.

Sarah Jane Stewart 1820/21-?

Searching for information on Sarah Jane Stewart. She was the daughter of George Stewart and a McDaniel daughter of Jacob McDaniel (possibly named Jane). Sarah Jane was born ca 1820-1821 in Georgia - probably Jones County. Her mother died pre 1826 when her grandfather Jacob McDaniel gives her a slave named Charity aged 7 and a lot of land in Houston County, GA - both of which are to remain in the hands of Sarah's uncle Samuel McDaniel until she is of age or marries. In 1838 Samuel McDaniel petitions the court from Tennessee saying that George Stewart (her father) is insolvent and that Samuel has been Sarah Jane's sole support financially for everything including education. Those papers also state that the slave given to Sarah Jane is now crippled with two small children and unable to support herself. Samuel McDaniel sells land in Georgia from Hardeman County TN in February 1838. A newspaper notice that land in Georgia will be sold for the benefit of Sarah Jane Stewart a minor of TN and is signed by Samuel McDaniel, dated April or May 1838. This land is sold in June for $600.00. It also appears that Sarah Jane is living with Samuel McDaniel and family still in 1840 Hardeman Co TN census. By 1846 the Samuel McDaniel family is in Bastrop Co TX where Samuel and some of his children are killed ina cholera epidemic. Did Sarah Jane Stewart stay in Hardeman County? I do not see a marriage record on your web site.

We found an old letter written to my great-grandfather, W. Andy Jackson, by his cousin Minnie Jackson from Toone, TN in which she mentions that 700 horses died in Hardeman County that spring. The date on the letter is May 16, 1897. Does anyone know anything about this -- what may have happened to so many horses?

I have just joined this list and hope that someone can help me. My grandfather, Jimmie W. Jackson, told us that HIS grandfather, Jimmie Anderson Jackson (1847-1926), was trained as a medic in the Civil War. We know that he returned to Hardeman County after the war and married Judia Ann Reynolds (1844-1917) on 12 December 1866. They later moved to Gibson County, TN, where they are shown on the 1880 census. I would like to find out what unit Jimmie Anderson Jackson served in, who he served with, what battles they may have fought. He would have been only 14 at the beginning of the war. The only thing I have to go on is that we think he mustered out in Arkansas. I would appreciate any help on this. Thank you so much!

The 1850 census shows:

Household 1560
D Vaughan 57 Female born North Carolina
Hezekiah 39 Male
Daniel 30 Male
Elizabeth 27 Female
Declany 18 Female
William 14 Male

D. Vaughan appears to be the mother of this family. I am a descendant of William Vaughan in this household. Also the Herriman and Hooper families next door are relatives of mine. Has anyone else researched any of these families? Thank you for your help!

Scott Williams

They were married in Fayette county on April 15, 1845. I am trying to locate them on the 1850 Tennessee census. They may have been from Hardeman County. I think Joseph's father may have been William Robertson, born abt. 1801. William was on the 1840 Fayette County census. Fatis' mother may have been Nancy Howell also found on the 1840 Fayette County census. Anyone researching this line of Robertsons or Howells?

I have the Tippah County Confederate page and was recently put in contact with a man from Benton Co. who recently purchased land on which is an old abandoned cemetery. He wants to know something about the people buried there. The one name he sent me was Capt. Robert W. Smith 8th Miss. Cav. 1863. He actually was Capt. of Co. D Smith's Co. I located his wife in Grand Junction TN cemetery: Smith, Dorothy Ann 23 Nov 1818-17 May 1903 w/o Capt. Robert W. Smith. Also buried there is: Smith, Col. J.W. 5 May 1842-2 Dec 1909. He applied for pension in Hardeman Co. and his wife later applied for a widows pension. I believe this is she: Smith, Elizabeth T. 11 Nov 1846-22 Jul 1911. Is anyone researching this Smith family? I would love to have obituaries for them and also the pension applications. Thanks for any help.

Fred

Dabbs / Dobbs and Hopper / Harper families
Does anyone know anything about any of the Dabbs (or Dobbs) and Hopper (or Harper)
families in Hardeman Co. around the early to mid 1800s?

I am researching the line of Elizabeth Hopper, b. c. 1812 in TN. Her husband
was probably a Joseph or Richard Dabbs (or Dabb or Dobbs). I have found a
marriage record for a Richard Dabb and Betsy Harper, June 22, 1826 in
Hardeman Co., and a speculate that this is my Elizabeth Hopper Dabbs.

In the censuses, I see a Joseph Dabbs and a James Dabbs listed in Hardeman
Co. in 1830, and a Joseph Dabbs (apparently the same) and an Elizabeth Dabbs
there in 1840. None appear thereafter. Joseph apparently died in 1849,
and my Elizabeth Hopper appears in Carroll (Boone) Co. AR in 1850
and thereafter as a widow. This is part of why I speculate that Joseph
was her husband. Hardeman Co. tax records indicate that Joseph's
name was also Richard, which lends further support to the theory.

Does anyone know anything about these people, and how they might be
related, if at all? Thanks.

Lou
I am looking for any info on the Middleton families who were in Hardeman Co. from 1850 until now. My wife's grandfather, William B. Freeman, married a Mollie Middleton in 1880 in Hardeman Co. who we think was the daughter of John and Lucindy Middleton. Any info would be appreciated.

Was the hospital in Hardeman Co. ever used as a military hospital? Does anyone have photos of the outside of the buildings or grounds during 1915-1925? I have some photos that I think were taken at the hospital and I'd like to find something to compare them with to make sure. My grandmother and two of her sisters (maiden name HORTON) were nurses at the hospital sometime before 1925. Does anyone know if they have employee records that can be searched for information?
Thanks,
Jacque

I am trying to determine if there was any connection between the Leathers and Bradford families of the Cloverport/Toone area of Hardeman County.

My great grandmother was Susie Nevada Leathers who married William Norwood Jones. She named her last son, Lucius Bradford Jones after her brother, Erasmus Bradford Leathers , born 1-13-1883 and not sure of date of death but at least after 1920. His mother, Mary Jane Kelly Leathers died in Madison Co. in 1925.

The middle name of Bradford was given to my grandfather, father, me and my son so I would like to know if their is a family tie in or if they were just good friends with this family, or what?

If anyone has any knowledge please let me know. Thanks!

Samuel Huston Taylor, Henry Marion Taylor, George Washington Taylor

I am looking for the family ancestors of Samuel Huston Taylor. He was born about 1847. His 1870 and 1880 census cites Alabama as the birth place for both his parents and him. I believe they may have moved to McNairy County shortly after his birth. In 1869 he moved to Kossuth and married Miss Sarah Elizabeth Mullins. I also believe he has a brother or cousin named Henry Marion Taylor who also lists Alabama as birth place for both parents and his self. Henry Marion Taylor was born in 1848 and married Emily Parolee Mullins Jones. Emily and Sarah were sisters and this is why I believe Samuel and Henry to also be related. Can anyone help me find the parents of these two men? I have been told a George Washington Taylor may have been father to Henry but I have not been able to find this family on any 1850 or 1860 census. 1870 I have found Sam, but have not found Henry so its possible he may still have lived with parents. I suspect they lived in McNairy County.

I found a S.W. Taylor and Rebecca Taylor in 1860 living in Pocahontas. They have a son named Franklin A. Taylor does anyone have Franklin in thier family tree?

I am listing the surnames of the immediate family of these two families.

Thank You,
Lori Taylor-Blitz

loriblitz@sbcglobal.net
www.johnmullinsfamily.com

Leolin T.Jones & Susan Dixon Jones-Hardeman Co. TN

Looking for any clue on what happened to my g-g-granfather, Leolin T. Jones, born in Virginia or Tennessee ca 1840. He was the son of John T. Jones and (possibly) of Martha Swindle, who lived in Hardeman County TN. Circa 1857 he married Susan Dixon, daughter of William and Eliza Deming Dixon; they were living in Hardeman Co.TN in the 1860 census with their son John T. Jones. Leolin (who may have gone by "Ollie" or "Olly") enlisted in the infantry regiment from Hardeman Co. He is shown as deserting at the end of the March pay period in 1862 (possibly shortly before Shiloh.) A family story told by Leolin's son John T. Jones (1859-1944) was that his whole family had died in a house fire in Hardeman Co. Although reluctant to give any details, John T.is quoted as saying, "It was around Civil War times, and there was a lot of bad feeling." In 1867 John T. Jones, listed as an orphan, was being assisted in some legal proceedings by neighbor Abiijah Crain (whose granddaughter John T. later married).
I have not been able to find Leolin and/or Susan Dixon Jones in any census after 1860, nor have I been able to find any cemetery record for either of them in Hardeman Co. I would appreciate any information which might corroborate or refute the house fire story, so that I can learn what happened to Leolin and Susan, who were my gt-gt-grandparents. Their son John T. married Martha Elizabeth McGlothlin in Hardeman Co. circa 1880; they moved to Henderson Co. TX sometime in the 1890s.
She was married to Arthur Sandy of Hardeman county, Tenn., which is where he passed. She may have passed mid to late seventies or eighties. I do not have a birth year, but Arthur was born in 1915 and passed in 1987. His birth year may be an indication of hers. Arthur and Reba possibly had one child, named Brenda born about 1959. She was mentally challenged and lived in a care center. Arthur and Reba may be buried together, along with their daughter.

If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.
I am looking for descendants of Thomas Moore, aged 60, born in Va. in the 1850 census, with his son Isaac, aged 25, also born in Va. He is next door to a William A. Moore, aged 30, born in Va. who has no wife, but a daughter Elizabeth aged 4 and a daughter Martha aged 2. If you descend from these families or know anything about them, please contact me. These men came from Halifax County Virginia. Thomas was a son of Daniel Moore, wife Mary (Polly) who died after 1830, age 90-100 in the 1830 census. He was originally from Chesternfield County, Va. and left there about 1780, moving to Halifax. I am trying to piece together the various Moore families, including of course, mine, who seems connected to Daniel in Halifax Co. If you have info, please contact me at restes@comcast.net. He is also associated with a Lemuel Moore who was in Hardeman Co. in 1840, but gone by 1850. This family is also associated with the Bates family, as Thomas's wife whom he married in Halifax County was a Bates.

Roberta Estes

I am looking for information on Florence Chanoine. She may have been listed under Florence Chanione. Her son, my grandfather, was living in Somerville with her in June 1917. I cannot find anything on her. Could she have been buried in Hardeman County? I understand there may be other variations of the last name. Her husband was Ernest. I know her parents were Charles Adams and Mary Driscoll. They lived in Maine and Massachusetts. Any help would be appreciated.

Does anyone know how and if there is a list of births in certain years? I would think in a small town, there would not have been that many and maybe there is a list. I think my grandmother was born in 1903 but she was taken by a family and they lied about her year of birth. I figured since they would not mention the truth of her real parents they either stole her or she was given away. I think they kept the right birthday which was November 7th....If I could see what babies were born from 1903 to 1905 on November 7th, I have a feeling we would know who her mother was.

Thanks for any info!

Hello, my name is Cheryl and I am researching my family from Crainsville/Hornsby TN. Sometime ago I read on rootsweb some notes from the Walnut Grove Baptist Church. Recently I located my ggg grandfather's marriage certificate and found the C.C. McDaniels moderator of Walnut Grove was the officiating minister at the marriage. From the notes I saw that on April 15, 1871 the Black members of the church decided to form a church of their own. Recently, I found a deed for the Walnut Grove Baptist Church Colored. Five acres were paid for in the 1880's. Of special interest to me because two of my ggg grandfathers (Charles Willis and Eldridge Chism) were listed as trustees of that church. Do you have any other info about
Walnut Grove Church or it's members. Any info would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks Cheryl
