My Cope family line is Micajah and Mary Polly Brewer Cope.
Micajah was the son of James Cope. His and Mary's daughter, Milly Permilla married Dawson Turner Lamb in 1855 in Hawkins Co., their daughter, Mary, married Jeremiah Overbey.

My side of the Brewer's, Lamb's, Cope's and Overbey's moved to Rockcastle/Jackson/Owsley counties, KY sometime in the 1860's.

I have quite a bit of info on the Brewer and Cope families, but, I do not have much on the Lamb and Overbey's.

Thanks,

Pam

Trent/Bowlin genealogy in Hancock county

Hi,

I am hoping someone can shed some light on a puzzle I have found. I am trying to sort out my uncle's line. His mother was Cordia Bowlin who I found in the census of 1910 in Hancock county Tennessee. Cordia was called Cordie and she married John Dudley Woodard/Woodward. John Dudley Woodard is found in the census of Lee county Virginia
in 1910. In 1920, he and Cordie are married and still in Lee county Virginia and in 1930, they are in Claiborne county TN.

My uncle told me many of Cordie's siblings names as they were his aunts and uncles. But they are not listed as Bowlin's. Here is what I found:

Elvira Trent, census Hancock county TN 1910

Elvira Trent age 42 Widow
children
Kittie age 16 married a Collins
Etter or Etta age 14 married a Webb
Cordie age 12 married John Dudley Woodard
Homer age 10
Bonny age 8
Grant age 6
James Guy-age 5
Katie age 2 married a Prater
Edith under a year
Henry Bowlin is listed as a SERVANT age 80? This age cant be right. There is also another child named Cornie who married an Estes. William Henry Bowlin is the father of these children...so where is he? Who is the Henry living in this household?

My uncle remembers his granfather Henry Bowlin. My uncle was born in 1933. Elvira says she is a widow. I have seen a post where one of the children went by Trent or Bowlin..why? I found one entry on Rootsweb world connect for this family and the same man has posted on this forum but his email is not working. If Henry Bowling and Elvira Trent were married, why is she going by her maiden name in the census? Why are the children listed as Trents? In the 1910 census she is one door away from Madison Trent. I dont know who her parents are. Can anyone help?

Thanks!
Tracy

Can anyone tell me anything about the following families? William and Riley families are listed in the 12 and 13 districts of Hawkins county Tennessee. In the 12th district William list Jessie Overbey as a brother and Rile list Spence as a brother. I believe that Jessie and Spence are sons of Gabriel Overbay but Spence age is not what I have. I have his birth as about 1845. The 13 district list William, Riley and Spencer in the order that I have listed them. They are on the same page that list Samuel Gordon (my great grandfather) and Tipton Gordon who is most likely Samuel’s brother. Tipton’s wife is Catharine Overbay, most likely a cousin of Jessie and Spencer.

1880 United States Federal Census
District 12, Hawkins, Tennessee
William Jones Head	47
Lidia Jones Wife	50
Jessie W. She and my gr grandfather had 8 children at the time of her death, Bose remarried and had 8 more children, 5 are still living, but know nothing of his first wife Rebecca other than she was a Mullins and thought to be daughter of James Mullins , granddaughter of Irish Jim Mullins. Does anyone have any idea who Rebecca married and who Luverna's father is? I have several ties to the melungeon families of Newmans Ridge and other Mullins, Collins, Gibsons, Lawson, Bell and Miser Families and few others. But Luverna's father is still a mystery.
Tuckers of Hancock Co. TN

I would be pleased to hear from descendants of or anyone who knows anything about William Tucker who left an 1843 Hawkins Co. TN will naming a dozen children and a wife Nancy who was born c1802. Some of his survivors are in the Hancock Co. census returns of 1850, 1860 and perhaps later, and apparently lived in a portion of Hawkins that became Hancock after William died. His children, born between 1818 or so and c1841 are George (the eldest son), John, (second-eldest son), William and Hyram (born about 1839 and 1841, respectively) and eight daughters Jane, Matilda, (Althea?), Rebecca, Ruth, Myra, Elizabeth and Minerva. In 1850 Hancock Co. Nancy's household includes Mira 19, Elizabeth 14, William ll, Hiram 9, and Manerva 13. In 1860, Hiram seems to be the man age 19 with wife Manila, 21, and a daughter Nancy, 8 months.

Other Tuckers of Hancock Co. may be related to William who died in 1843. If so, George (died in Hancock 1850) and an older Hiram (1804-1873), who was, surprisingly, interred in Fort Hill Cemetery near Cleveland, Bradley Co. TN, are likely his first cousins. George may be the George Tucker who witnessed William's will signing. These two men were sons of William Tucker, Sr. (1768-1808) and were born in old Burke/present Caldwell Co. NC.
I am seeking info on Lavina Hurley which was my Great-Great-Grandmother. We know that she had three children listed in the 1860 census in Hancock County: Pollyann (1853), Stephen S. (1856), and James H.(1858)my Great-Grandfather. There was a Sary Hurley listed,(1804)born in North Carolina. She was possiably the mother or mother-in-law of Lavina. No record of a husband for either. In the 1870 census: it list Lavina, age 35, Polly Anne 11, James H., 12, Susan, 6 and Marion 2. No record of Sary Hurley or Stephen S. in 1870. I think that Sary was a full blooded Cherokee Indian, according to my Grand-father Marion Franklin Hurley s/o James H and Mary Cantwell Hurley.
I would appreciate any infor.
Deloris

I am lookin for information on Orville Seals. He is the father of my great-grandmother, Lillie Rebecca Seals Johnson. I found an Orvile Seal in an earlier Hancock County census, but I am not sure if this is the man I am searching for. My great-grandmother was born in Hancock County in 1874. She had a sister by the name of Laura Davis and a brother by the name of Frank Seals. At last word they were living in the Tazwell area. If anyone can help me with information, I will greatly appreciate it.

William Doll Rhea

HELP!
Is there any direct descendant of William Doll Rhea peeking in that can help me out? I list a possible birthdate for William as 1845, b-TN, no proof, and died 18 oct 1908 in possibly Conway, AR. I am looking for any proof one might have, or be willing to share info with. He married Matilda Elizabeth Howell about 1865 and had the following children: William Henry, Matilda Elizabeth (my great grandmother) Andy, Molly, and Dan Rhea. William apparently killed a man in TN and was a sheriff or some kind of law official according to what I have learned.
I have had a few contacts on this line but they have not contacted me for a while and I was hoping someone had found more info on the family. William could of used the alias of Robert O'dell?? Need some kind of proof if possible.
In the 1870 Hancock Co., TN Census, there is an Andy listed as age 11/12, with family #81 Elizabeth Rhea, age 24, b-VA, and William, age 3, b-TN and Matilda, age 1, b-TN, but in the 1880 Hancock Co., TN Census, Andy does not show up, but Mary does, and she is age 5. Did Andy die young? I have also heard of a Dan ,but not sure he connects to this family, can anyone verifiy this. This particular Dan Rhea was killed at Henry Chandler's house and he had 32 bullet holes in him. Anyone ever hear of this Dan Rhea, he may not be from this family.
Any help would be appreciated, William Doll's father was Samuel Ham Rhea, who I also would like to connect with other descendant on. Thank you.
Donna Homer

Dicy or Jane Seals born about 1833

Alfred Lawson, son of Anderson Lawson, married Dicy Seals before 1860. Alfred died in the Civil War and his wife then married Mack Winstead. While married to Mack, she went by the name of Jane. There are only two Dicy/Jane Seals in 1850 Hawkins or Hancock County who are of the right age. Dicy/Jane was born about 1833. There is a Jane in the household of Baly Seals, and a Dica in the household of Samuel Seals. Does anyone know which one married Alfred Lawson and Mack Winstead?

Children of Abner and Elizabeth Gordon

I am looking for information and thoughts on the children of Abner and Elizabeth Gordon. In the Rev War of pension application, which was granted, for Elizabeth seven children are named.

William; I think he was the William Gordon in the 1840 census. He was living in Elizabeth household in 1850 and 1860 he was married.

Alice: I think that this was Alsey, Elcy or Elsa that was living with Elizabeth in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census. It seems that she used Alice in the 1880 census or this was someone else.

David: I have nothing on him. Looking at the 1840 census, he may not have come to Tennessee. Perhaps he died young. I can not be sure.

Elizabeth: I have nothing on her but looking at 1840 census, I think that she came to Tennessee with the family.

James Henry; He married a Jane Brewer and died in Rockcastle KY.

Martha: I have nothing on her but looking at 1840 census, I think that she came to Tennessee with the family.

Mary Ann: I think that she is the Mary in the household with Elizabeth in 1850 and 1860. She is listed with her children in 1870 and 1880 and she is listed as Mary Ann in 1870.

I was not able to verify that Elizabeth was Elizabeth Russell. In a signed statement with her mark she said the she was Elizabeth Maiden.

I would like to hear from you if you can add anything or have thoughts about Elizabeth and the children. You may agree or disagree even very strongly, I would like to here from you. There are some times and ages that I question in pension papers. I think that I found 86 pages. Some of the papers was Abner’s application. I am in the process of putting my thought down about this.

Jimmie Gordon

I am looking for the Father and Mother and other family members of Jane Brewer that married James Henry Gordon, most likely in Hancock County . Most likely they were married in the later part of 1840’s. They were listed in the 1850 and 1860 census in Hancock county. In 1870 they were in Rockcastle Kentucky. James died Dec 25, 1875 (according to a death record and names his father and mother as Abney and Elizabeth Gordon). Jane and most of the children is listed in Rockcastle in 1880. Jane gives her birth place as Tennessee and both parents as N. C. The Birth record of their youngest son follows.

Kentucky Birth Records, 1852-1910
Name: Wm Thos Gordon
Birth Date: Jun 1875
Birth County: Rockcastle
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Father's name: James H Gordon
Mother's name: Jane Brewer
County of Residence: Rockcastle

Jimmie Gordon
Garrett or Martha Collins

My husbands name is Foye Curren Collins, born May 30,1938. We are having such a hard time finding out anything about his father,Garrett H Collins. I have been to Jonesville and Sneedville and also talked with Scot Collins and all he could find was that he was in WWI. We know his mother's name was Martha J ??
I had always thought it was Lawson but on his death cert. it says his mothers maiden name was Mullens. We found in the 1910 censes that she was married to Monroe Lawson and Garret was listed as a step son... so WHO KNOWS?? I get more confused each time I go try to dig up more.. We know he married Fannie Wittaker Oct. 29, 1927.. He worked for James Testermine in Sneedville at the time.. ( I know I am talking in circles but I am trying to get everything I know down)
We THINK he had some sisters, Daisy who married Sailer Mullins in 1905.. Geny, who had a daugher Pearl who married Charlie Crocket, also Vergie, Govener, and Edieth were her children also. Another daughter of Martha's was Jane, who married Willie Mullins and their children were Martha Lee Branch and Dolly(Martha's daughter), married Bob Gibson first and then Doc Gibson.
Also my brother in law, Wayne Collins told me last night that Martha, Garrett's mother, had a brother who's last name was Lawson. So that leads us back to Lawson as her maiden name.
On Garrett's Funeral record, his date of birth was June 3, 1892---Death May 12, 1966
My husbands family says Garrett's father was (we thought) was Curren Collins. When we got a copy of Garretts SSN, it said his father's name was Keran Collins.
I have his Discharge Papers from the army #4250830
Discharge date was June 9, 1919
I wish I had more but I don't. If you can find anything, please let me know or if you have any suggestions on where I should go next, please do so..
I really appreciate your help.
Trying to find the parents of Nancy Brewer that married William King, Dec. 29, 1841 in TN. The 1860 census for TN Hancock Co., Brier Creek District shows the family as follows:

William KING 43 M 2nd great grandfather
Nancy 40 F
Thomas M. 16 M great grandfather
Larkin 13 M
Ambrose 11 M
Jincy N. 8 F
Wm. 2 M

Also listed on the same page are the Brewer & Seal families. In addition is found Elisabeth King 74 F, the widow of Burrell King. This would seem to indicate that the Kings, Brewers & Seals were at least neighbors, if not living on the same farm & is quite likely some relationship exists between the families. Also there are found several given names such as Ambrose & Larkin/Larken that are common to both surnames.

It would be very much appreciated if anyone that has any information regarding these King and/or Brewer lines to contact me.....Thanks, Bob King

Harrell Family

I am researching the Harrell/Herrell family out of Claiborne and Hancock Counties in Tennessee. This family came from Wilkes Co NC about 1810 with a group of other familys from that area. Records in Wilkes are scarce.

However, my William Harrell/Herrell had a son named Abel after arriving in Claiborne County. That was his only son. There were several daughters. There is also a Zachariah Herrell found in Claiborne who moved from Anson Co NC apparently in the 1830s and Zachariah’s son Alexander swears for Mary Harrell’s loyalty in later years when she applies for a pension from William's War of 1812 service, perhaps indicating a connection between these familys, William and Zachariah.

As I searched about online for Abel and Zacharial Harrell, I find that these names both occur in the same family that came from Nansemond Co Va to Bertie Co NC in the mid 1700s. The researcher who posted this info has an e-mail that doesn't work, so I can't get ahold of him. I'd love to communicate with other researchers working on these lines.

In Claiborne/Hancock Counties of Tennessee there is also a Harrell line from Wythe Co., Va. who seemed to have originally been Hearls and were apparently German descendants. This group does not seem to interact with my William’s family, so I do not believe he was connected with them, at least not directly.

Eventual DNA evidence between the Wythe Co group and the Nansemond Co group will be very interesting.

Bobbi Estes

Martha Patsy Odle, Jeremiah Odle's wife and Anderson Howell

Who was Martha Patsy Odle? Earlier queries on this message board say she is the daughter of Anderson Howell and Elizabeth Stewart and also sister to Elizabeth Howell Rhea who married one William Doll (Dahl) Rhea. Another responder says Martha Patsy's was a "Freeman" when she married Jeremiah Odle.

Martha Patsy was born in 1812/13 and her supposed sister, Elizabeth, was born in 1846 - 34 years difference is ages. Could their supposed mother, Elizabeth Stewart Howell, have had children over such a long span? It is possible if she had Martha early but is highly questionable.

What is the proof that she was originally a Freeman?

I do have a picture of Martha Patsy and Elizabeth together so they were certainly connected at least as in-laws.

Also, does anyone have a photo of Anderson Howell? I have a photo reputed to be of Anderson and his wife. I would like to varify his identity by comparing it to another photo of him.

This I got from a story that I believe is about him in the book, "Hancock County, Tennessee and Its People, Volume III, Page 15. Before the historical society published the book, I sat with the author of this story whose Hancock father had passed it on to him. He said he prefered not to use the story subject's real name. He used "Enix" Seals instead. The story is called "Chuckle - Chuckle."

A side note: My GGG grandfather John Stubblefield and his wife Melissa Mathis lived on Enos's farm just before the Civil War. I assume John worked as a farm hand. John is believed to be Mary Ann's brother.

Bruce
