Small cemetery in Tennessee

I am looking for a small abandoned cemetery that was with a church that was closed. This would be in Hamilton county Tennessee. Another researcher and I were told that back in the 1970's family members found the cemetery overgrown. They said our relative Georgia Jenkins Tankersley was buried there about 1920 and her husband had taken large rocks and carved her name in it due to not having much money. Any information would be appreciated.

We believe this cemetery to be just over the state line in Tennssee after you leave Georgia.

Hello, I am writing to see if anyone is familiar with a small cemetery called "Mills Cemetery" on the TN side of Lookout Mountain. According to epodunk.com, it is near the NW corner of Lula Lake Road and McCallie Lane. Is it on private property? Is there a sign from the road?

I am trying to find out if my ggg-grandfather, John Bramlet Mills, his wife Narcissus Emmaline (Smith) Mills and some of his family are buried there. According to information we have, the gravestones we are looking for would be dated in the very early 1900s and were originally placed on land owned by the Carruth family.

If anyone has any information, it would be much appreciated. Thanks very much.
Melanie Lawrence

My husband was born in Chattanooga, on March 21, 1960. We believe that it was at Erlanger. We know that he was sent as a baby to Carrollton, georgia and adopted from there, at ten months old. We have no idea his birth parents name, nor his birth name. His birth certificate just shows his adopted parents as his parents, and their last name as his. If, anyone knows how we may go about finding out his birth name, please, notify me?
Thanks,
Debbie

Looking for information on an F M Wolfe (Francis Marion Wolfe), a soldier of 12 Batallion, Confederate serving under Capt Day. He was registered as a POW in Knoxville, Tenn on 10 Apr 1865 and then confined and sent to Chattanooga, on 21 Apr 1865. He had children with Mary Jordan who still lived in Tennessee, only two of five survived past the age of 6. One of the children could have been concieved after his capture and departure to Chattanooga, so it is possible he left Chattanooga after the war and went back home. He is described as having dark skin and dark hair with grey eyes. Possibly Melungeon. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Sean Wolf

I am desparetly searching for the obituaries of James "Henry" Worley who lived in Northern Georgia, brother of Laura Worley Woodward who was murdered April 20, 1894 in Gilmer/Murray County Georgia..He left behind a wife and children. He had been married 2 times. I need the names and dates of his wives and all the Children fathered by him.. I know he had a daughter named Kimmieline and a son named Lester with Elizabeth M. Tankersley they married March 26, 1879 in Gilmer County Georgia. I don't know if she was sife #1 or #2. At the trial held in Atlanta Georgia for the attempted hanging of Henry by the whitecapper gang(kkk) of Northern Georgia it was stated that it was widely thought tha Henry had had something to do with the death of his first wife and that he had ran one of his sons off..I believe that son was my grandfather Bryant Leonard Worley. that I found on the 1900 census in Dekalb County Alabama.enumerated in the household of Rachel Countess as a house servant. Anyone with any information on this family please contact me. I have done extensive research on this man and would be willing to share what I have with you, Thanks in advance always sincere Janie

Henry Gardenhire a/k/a Henry "Tobe" Goins

I'm trying to uncover a family mystery. Reports are that my gggrandfather, who was known by his family as Henry G. "Tobe" Goins, was actually born a "Gardenhire" in Hamilton County. The earliest record I have for him is July 1882 where he obtained a marriage license. He married Laura B. Templeton and later Melinda Rosette Petty. I am a descendent of the Goins/Templeton line. Anyway, reports are that Tobe was either adopted by a Goins family in Graysville, TN or that he "got into trouble in East Chattanooga" and moved to Graysville, TN where he changed his name to Goins.

Any information would be helpful.

- Lynda

1860 Census of Hamilton County, District 9 pg. 68a&b show Henry and Judith Norman (age 43 & 48, respectively) from North Carolina and their children Samuel, Dilly, Jane, Martha, Charles, and (?George?). Next family shown is William Norman (age 22) and his wife Sarah J.(age 20) with daughter Caledonia 10 months. All the Normans are from North Carolina. Sarah is from Tennessee. Am interested in any information pertaining to this family, including Sarah's maiden name and parents as well as any details of the North Carolina roots of the Normans.

William Norman moved his family to Christian Co., Missouri. They were there as of 1870 census. His daughter Clarissa married David Perkins in Missouri.

three Castiles who went their separate ways,,,,

I called a "Robert Castile" in Tenn. thinking he may know something of my Castiles and he was of a pretty ripe ol age and he told me, rumor had it that there were three Castile Brothers who came into Ala. and had a Parting of the ways so to speak. Never spoke to each other again. I wonder when I look at at the listings if we really could be connected after all. Has any one considered DNA testing. I submitted mine through FamilyTreeDNA. They are the best. However, we need to get a male since its the male who carries the "Castile" gene down generations. Wouldn't it be something indeed to find out we are all related after all? Think of the reunion we could have! I will get my "uncle" to submit his DNA and sign for it to be able to be compared with others who come in. That would be one way once and for all to check on our blood lines. I do know mine got married alot and didn't tell the other's about previous marriages. Thats been fun.

Just a suggestion ya'll, talk to you soon, colleen (my mom's a Castile!) Colleenlopez@yahoo.com

I am trying to find information about Nellie Reed Davis, b. 1818 in Hamilton Co, d/o William and Susan Reed. There is a Wm. Reed on the 1817 reservation roll, whom I've heard is the same father of Nellie, but I can't place him in White Oak Mtn, Ham. Co then in 1818. Nellie and Wesley Davis were residents of Snow Hill and were the parents of my ancestor, Jane Davis Wolfe, w/o Francis Meredith. Thanks, Kim

James Smith

On July 5, 1824 an entry was made for James Smith for 54 acres. On July 8, 1824 another entry was made for James Smith for another 50 acres. I'm very interested in contacting people who may be connected to this James Smith. I believe he may be James Smith, father of David Smith, who later moved to Alabama. The David Smith in question eventually moved to Johnson Co., AR and I descend from him. My James Smith and David Smith both are of Cherokee ancestory (I have documentation). And I have found that very early settlers of the Chatanooga area, which was called Ross's Landing were animal traders and often married the women of the Cherokee Nation. It is believed that my James Smith was the son of James Smith, the trader. According to my documentation, my James Smith knew the Gourd family (a well-known Cherokee family) and were in the Chatanooga area prior to the indian removal. Apparently, my James Smith and family avoided the removal and moved to Alabama (Fayette Co., AL??). I'm looking for any information, historical or otherwise that would help me in my research.

James Smith m. ?
David Smith m. Sarah Gallymore, dau of Jenni Lee
Sarah Ann Smith m. William Patterson Grider

Thanks,

Mike

Eliza then, must have died between 1870 & 1880.
Eliza was b. in 1833 S.C. Her name before her marriage to William was PALMER. He was born near Ooltewah, Tenn. in 1828 and married Martha Erwin. Their children were: Emma, md. Hamilton Williams; Frank (Francis Malachi) md. Tankersley Shell; George md. Talley; Jesse, md. Shell; John L. (Doc) md. Self; Henry A. md. (1) Nora Nevins; md. (2) Jenny Jones. George W. and Martha Erwin Tallent, and their four year old daughter, Emma, came from S.E. Tennessee in 1854 by ox wagon across Kentucky and Illinois, crossed the Mississippi by ferry above Cape Girardeau, moved to Perry County where he taught school, soon homesteaded in Bollinger County including the land where Scopus post office now stands. The record shows that George W. Tallent was born of Malachi Tallent and Sara Miser; that Malachi was born of Lot Tallent and Rebecca Vanderford; that Lot was born in 1775 in Anson Co., N.C. of Lot Tallent and Sara Lindsay; that Lot Sr. was born about 1752 of Thomas Tallent and Elizabeth Higdon; that both Thomas and Lot Sr. were members of the revolutionary forces in N.C.; that Lot Sr. was recruiting officer for the Revolutionary forces, was taken prisoner and died 1782 on a British prison ship. Three of Geo. W. Tallent's children who stayed in Bollinger County are: 1. Emma md. Hamilton Williams, children: Charley, George, Homer, Jesse, Hattie Limberg, and Ida Marlowe. 2. Jesse Tallent, md. Ruth Shell, children: Omri, Will, Mellie, Grace, Ray, Ruby, Swope, and Willard. Jesse founded the town of Tallent, in Bollinger County, and his grandsons own and operate a farm there including the old home place. 3. Henry A. (1869-1955) md. (1) Nora Nevins, children: Gertude (Mrs. Monroe Kinder); Beulah (Mrs. Alonzo Dockins); Ernest, and Robert. md. (2) Jenny, daughter of Isaac Jones, children: Ora, Irene (Mrs. Manly Long), Willie, Milford, Winford, Muriel, and Lucille (Toots).

Bollinger County, Missouri 1851-1976 pg. 939

We may be the leading Kittrell resource out there and we are free to descendants and spouses and helpful to everybody else.

We may be the leading Kittrell resource out there and we are free to descendants and spouses and helpful to everybody else.

We have a family tree of nearly 35000 (35K) Kittrell descendants and spouses that is totally private and a MyFamily site that is private and free and available to all Kittrell descendants and spouses.

Just post or e-mail if you fit the bill and want to see thousands of bits of Kittrell info.

The area of the future Gates County of North Carolina is the origin in the USA of the largest Kittrell family and Bertie County, NC was the home of one or more of the next generation, and later they moved on through Craven, Pitt, Granville, Carteret, Davidson and other NC counties as land grew to scarce for the number of male heads of household to feel that they could prosper.

After that period of homesteading in various counties, many in some branches moved to other states including many times over Tennessee, with Sumner appearing to be one of the first stops and many times over Maury County and other coumties including listed alphabetically Anderson, Cannon, Coffee, Davidson, DeKalb, Hamilton, Henry Hickman, Jackson, Knox, Lawrence, Lewis, Loudon, Macon, Marshall, Maury, Meigs, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Perry, Rutherford, Shelby, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale, Wayne, White, Williamson, Wilson and Weakley Counties, among many other, later became the home of many Kittrells of one line or another or multiple lines.

Anyone with Kittrell in their lore please write or post or both!

Anyone with Kittrell in any Tennessee document is welcome to write and to share info on an area rich in Kittrells, complicated to delineate from which Kittrell they descend and of which we have a large knowledge. We lose track of some of the female Kittrell lines consistently in every generation and would like to add them back to the family tree.

The name has many spellings through the centuries in public record including as examples only Kittrell, Kittrel, Kitrel, Kitrell, Kitterlin, Kitterill, Kitterell,..., leterally dozens or literally dozens depending how well you spell such things.

We will assist anyone on Kittrell matters (for free of course other than the wealth we get from both of us sharing some of what we know).

And we will be most pleased to find more missing links broken from our tree due to distance and change of generations to those who barely know a whit of their Kittrell kin.

Hello!

Long shot here but worth a try!

In a 1932 obituary in Orrville, Ohio, for James C Allen there is a mention of his surviving sisters, one living in Columbiana and the other in Chattanooga, Tennessee. No names were given, but from 1920 census they were Catherine and Emily (who was Lavina E in 1910).

In 1932 they would have been 23 and 22. They were born in Illinois. Parents Charles James ALLEN and Winifred CASEY.

Does anyone have a Catherine or a Lavina/Emily who fits the above details???? I believe that Charles James ALLEN was my greatgrandfather, who left his wife and three sons in England, went to America and disappeared! If THIS Charles is mine, he made a bigamous marriage (or lived with Winifred as husband and wife), and had the above two surviving daughters, who would have been half sisters to my grandfather.

ANY information or thoughts will be very welcome, I know nothing about US research as all of mine has been in English records.

Happy Christmas to you all, from Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Bev

I need a marriage look-up for Mary Burgess Hensley. It was her second marriage. I do not know to whom she was married. But she lived in Chattanooga and it would have been abt. 1950 or later.

Canterbury family Bible

I saw the following message on a website:
Bible records were obtained in 1933 by Penelope Johnson Allen, during her research of the Guthrie family of Hamilton County, Tennessee. The Canterbury Bible was in the possession of Rush B. Guthrie of Harrison, Tennessee. In 1933, Mrs. Allen wrote a weekly genealogical feature called "Leaves From the Family Tree," during her employment with the Chattanooga Times newspaper. Each week she focused on a local pioneer family by tracing the family roots back to colonial times. In 1982, these articles were published in a book, Leaves From the Family Tree, by Southern Historical Press.)
The Lawson Family Heritage Program is trying to find the current location of this Bible as we would like to have a photocopy of the page with information on Betsy Ann Lawson who married William Canterbury to post on our website in order to share with other family members. If anyone can give us a lead on the location of the Canterbury Bible we would very much appreciate the help.
Julie
seashellgram@aol.com

I received a cert. of death this week and it lists the place of burial as what looks like Newman Springs, GA. The cert is from Chattanooga in 1918.

Has anyone heard of this area? I can't find it when I Google'd it. This family is from the Chattanooga area and this is the first mention of Georgia. Unless it's a cemetery that the husband's family is buried in, I'm curious as to why there.

Fannie Ferrell DAVIS (b. 22 May 1883 d. 6 May 1918) married to Charles BONINE.

Thanks, Sandy
