Looking for information on a former slave - last name Molton/Moulton

I am looking for information on a former slave's family. I have his obituary and it states he was born in Hamilton Co, TN in 1841/1843 and ran away to participate in the Civil War. He ultimately ended up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I know slave research can be hard or excrutiatingly difficult. Nevertheless, am looking for the slave/plantation owner and possibly this slave's father. Full name of the former slave/freedman I'm researching is Charles Molton/Moulton. His obituary says he was "made" a slave in Chattanooga at age 16. His obituary doesn't list any parents or siblings by name, but says he had a sister & brother living in Fort Scott, KS, who after researching, appear to be a Jake/Jacob & Frances/Fanny Molton/Moulton. Can anyone help with my research? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Seeking information on my 2nd great grandmother, America Lusk aka M E Lusk who married my 2nd great grandfather, known to me as George Thompson. My great grandfather, George Thompson's death certificate states his father, also named George, was born in Georgia. America and George had two sons, Monroe (b) 1866 in Tennessee and my great grandfather, George (b) 1868 was born in Tennessee. I also know that America Lusk had an older brother named Monroe Rawlings Lusk. On the 1880 census, America and her mother, Nancy Rogers Lusk, are both widows. I am unable to locate any information on America Lusk Thompson's husband, my secong great grandfather, George Thompson; who may have been a Union soldier as well. Thank you.

William Thomas Banks born March 15, 1885 Kemper Co, Mississippi, Died, Feb 9 1940, Chattanooga Hamilton Co TN.

I'm trying to locate where William is buried, I've been told so many stories. One of the stories was that he was buried in a cemetery and a highway was going through that area so they moved all the people buried in the cemetery to a different one..but i don't know the name of the cemetery or what highway name.
I know that at one time he and his wife lived in Summit, TN..and i know that his mother in law is buried in Summit Cemetery, TN.
All I know is that he must have died in Hamilton County, TN because his wife and children were living there either in Summit or Chattanooga.
So far i just haven't been able to find him anywhere. I haven't found him yet in Highland Cemetery, I wrote Highland back in December of 2013 but they don't reply to any or my mail.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you
Shapactek

I think that we can safely accept that Lillian J., the widow of Carl A. BRYANT, was also the widow of Ernest Taylor "Chill" CHILDRESS. Here's the information, from the Chattanooga city directories and obituaries. Copies of these documents are readily available, if you're willing to pay copy and mail costs.

1. In 1955, Ernest T. CHILDRESS (a clerk with the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway) lived with his wife Lillian J. (a clerk with the Railway Express Agency) at 917 LaFayette Road in Rossville, Georgia.

2. He died in 1956, and the obituaries identified his survivors as his wife Mrs. Ernest T.; a brother; three sisters; and nieces and nephews. No children were mentioned.

3. Later in 1956, Lillian J. CHILDRESS was listed as his widow, still at the same address.

4. In 1959, Lillian is still listed as his widow, at the same address.

5. In 1960, Carl A. BRYANT and his wife Lillian J. are listed at the 917 LaFayette Road address.

6. In 1974, C.A. BRYANT is still listed at that address.

7. In 1975, Carl died while living at that same address. His survivors included his wife Mrs. Lillian J.; a son and two grandsons in California; a brother in Georgia and one in Alabama; a sister in Ohio; and nieces and nephews. His obituary said that he had lived in California for 40 years, before moving back to Rossville about 1960.

8. In 1987 Lillian J. CHILDRESS BRYANT (listed that way in the obituary) died while in a Chattanooga nursing home. Her survivors included three nieces and three nephews, all identified by name and location. No children were listed.

So, it appears that Ernest and Lillian had no children. When he died, she stayed in the same home. Carl came back, married her, and moved into the same home.

Hope this helps. Need anything else?

attocat,
I found a family tree on ancestry.com which has Lillian's first marriage to a "Chill" Childers with an approximate birth date of 1891. Ernest Taylor Childress was born May 5, 1892, so that could be him. Her second marriage was to Carl A. Bryant [1894-1975]. So if you could check Lillian Bryant's obituary for another marriage, I would be grateful.
Regards, Mary

I know she had a burial place reserved in the Chattanooga National Cemetery. Her husband was buried there. Her reserved plot was Z O 482. But I can find no record of her there. I have no idea when she died. But she may have remarried after her husband died in 1956. She would have been 53 years old at the time. So perhaps the Lillian J. Childress Bryant is her. But the Lillian J. Bryant listed in the Chattanooga Nat'l Cem has a different birthdate than I have listed for Lillian Childress [1896 for Lillian Bryant, abt 1902 for Lillian Jones Childress]. Thank you for your information.

The Tennessee Statewide Death Index does not show a Lillian Childress dying in Hamilton County, or any Childress dying on 07/01/1979.

The Chattanooga Obituary Index does not show a Lillian Jones Childess with that death date.

The Index does show a Lillian J. Childress Bryant (Mrs. Carl A.) with an obituary published 07/13/1987.

Chattanooga's Forest Hills Cemetery Index shows an Evelin Jones Childress buried in Section C.

Are you certain about your information?

During this 1942-1994 period, two newspapers were published in Chattanooga. Each likely carried the obits you need, and likely on more than one day--and the information from each paper may have differed from each other.

These obits are readily available in the Chattanooga library. Also, death certificates should be readily available for the first three deaths.

If you're willing to pay for copy and mail costs, I'll be happy to do the research in mid-January and send you ALL the obits and certs I find.

Post a response here and I'll contact you by private email.

This perhaps isn’t legal as far as driving is concerned, but if you pull off to the side of I-75 at that point, you’ll see a dirt road. A fence keeps you from driving through. The cemetery is just ahead on both sides of the dirt road. Has 2 white gates and has an old fence surrounding both sides. It is very overgrown and very few markers can be seen. Listed on the 1939 WPA Surveys as a Black Cemetery with over 200 unmarked graves.
Thanks for your reply. I have a lot of the info that you listed already. What I am looking for is info on William Taylor such as: who his parents were, siblings, where he was born etc. William is my great grandfather through his second marriage to Mary Melissa Hatfield. He passed away when my grandmother (Lilly Mae Taylor Stapleton Hamilton)was very young and no one knows anything about Will. Any info would be helpful and I am more than willing to pay for copies/postage.
Thanks again,
Phyllis

Not quite sure what info you're looking for. Much is readily available online:

- Marriage record for his first marriage.

- 1900 census for him and first wife (no childen).

- 1910 census for Clarence and Addie with their LEWIS grandparents.

- 1910 census for widowed Malissa, Lillie, and Silas.

- Granny Walker Cemetery listing for him and Lizzie.

There MAY be more birth/marriage/death records for him (and possibly first wife and children).

Let us know what you need. Are you willing to pay for copies of documents?
