Mathew Pate is forced to sell his land shortly after being accused of a knife attack on another man in Green Co. In Green Co Deed Bk 1 (abstracts 1785-1810, pg433) 1 Sept 1808 he sells his mansion farm, island 550ac bought from John Seers. Wit: Jeremiah (his son-in 6 Mar1809 statement says he saw his father make his mark.) Mathew is said to be "gone from the county." The case was referred to superior court in Washington Co. I searched there and could find no further reference. Does anyone know what happened to Mathew Pate or his son Jeremiah Pate? Meredith Adams
Sheridan
I am trying to prove where Elizabeth Ann Pate who married the grandson,Henderson Clark-local Washington Co boy-, of William Clark of Washington Co was bn. Please note this is the son of Jesse Clark, not his uncle Henderson Clark who was the son of William Clark. Eliz. Ann Pate is bn in 1800, Tenn. (Tombstone, family records.) She and Henderson marry in Alabama.

I'm searching for a man who died in Anderson county. He was originally from Greene county. He died after Jan 1944. I know he was living when his brother Sam died in Jan 1944 per Sam's obituary. Can someone look him up in a death index. He was born about 1872 give or take a couple of years. He was hit by a car on Laurel Road. That is where they found him dead. From my great-uncle's best recollection it was either 1949 or 1950. Thanks.

Can anyone help me find info about John Hale born about 1753-1754 in Bedford County, VA.? I found this at http://genealogytrails.com/tenn/revwarsoldiers.html

JOHN HALE

John Hale applied for Revolutionary pension in 1833 while living in Bledsoe County, Tenn. He was born in Bedford County. Va. in 1753 or 1754. He enlisted in Bedford County. Va.. in 1776. He volunteered in Capt. Harry Bluford's Company. Lieut. John Frields, Ensign Abram Sharp. They marched to the Cherokee Country and were in the battle of Long Island. He was discharged and returned home. He went to school and re-enlisted under Capt. Charles Watkins. He had 24 months' service in all. His discharge was burned in Blount County in 1803. After the War he moved to Wythe County, Va.. then to Greene County, Tenn.. to Washington County, Tenn., to Blount County, Tenn. and then to Bledsoe County about 1813.

I think my gg grandfather John Hale was born about 1815 in Wyhte County, VA. He married Sarah Fawbush (born 1822 in Sullivan Tenn.) about 1840. My gg grandfather and his spouse Sarah are listed in the 1860 census in Magoffin County, KY.

Could this John Hale born 1753-1754 in Bedford County, VA be related to my gg grandfather?

Thanks for any help.

John Hale
I would appreciate any additional informatioin on the following people. Thomas Willoughby born 1773 in Greene Co., TN married Nancy Chambers. They were married Dec 16, 1812 with James McCullough, Richard Logan & Peter Myers beings the bondsmen. They had several children-Mariah, Susanna, Polly, John. John is who I am interested in. He was bound out to Rev Roberts the bishop at the Methodist Church in this county. By 1839 Bishop Roberts and John Willoughby ended up in Lawrence Co., IN. I do not know what became of John's parents. I find John on an 1830 census, alone---so they were dead by the time he was 12. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. John first married Polly Brock and had 2 children-Winfield Scott Willoughby and Polly Willoughby. He then married Ann Eliza Hussey and had several more children. Ulysses Grant being one. Polly Brock Willoughby died in 1854. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

James Tusineer/Tessneer/Tesnear and a Rebecca (wife) along with daughter - Martha are in the 1880, Greene Co., TN census giving their age as 26 which would make them both born abt 1854. In 1894, James remarries a Betty Estep in Greene County. Can find no trace of Rebecca. Does anyone have any information on Rebecca?

I am pleased to announce the Swanay/Swaney (and other variant spellings) DNA Surname Project! Swanay's/Swaney's have resided in Greene County, TN, from its earliest times through the present.

The initial goals of this project are:

1. To determine if the Swanay, Swaney, Swanney, and [other variant spelling] lines are connected.
2. To connect the various lines with their ancestors, and to differentiate between the lines.
5. To find desendants of Miles Swanay and Jane Johnson.
6. To determine if the Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania lines are related.
7. To identify our immigrant ancestor(s) if possible.
8. To determine our Swanay/Swaney family's native homeland (current data is showing Scotland).
9. To break down those brick walls!

The Swanay/Swaney surname is very rare, so it is difficult to find participants. If you are, or know of, someone with this surname, I hope you/they will consider participating!

In order to participate in the Y-DNA testing, a male participant is required. Many females (like myself) who cannot themselves participate in this study can find a male relative bearing the last name being tested and have this relative represent their line.

We also have participants in a mtDNA project for this surname, but remember that only males carry the Y chromosome and can be linked to the surname.

You can visit our project page at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/swanay.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at: calgenie@verizon.net.

Warmly,
Elizabeth Swanay-O'Neal
Swanay/Swaney DNA Project Administrator

OBIT;JUNELLA FRITSCH, 83 BELVIDERE

Fritsch, Junella

JUNELLA FRITSCH, 83 BELVIDERE - Junella Beth Fritsch, 83, of Bel-videre died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, after a short illness. Born Dec. 5, 1924, in Thomson, to John A. and Helen (McGinty) Gaar; she survived the depression and early death of her father. On Dec. 15, 1951, she married Harold Fritsch in Embury Church in Freeport. They went on to spend more than 56 years together, raising six successful children. Junella was well known for her quick wit, giving nature and independent spirit. She laughed easily and found fun wherever she went. A great cook and baker, she was famous for her home-cooked meals and the peanut brittle, divinity and Christmas cookies she shared with friends and neighbors. She worked most of her life, spending 25 years as a switchboard operator at Union Hall - a job that she loved and which rewarded her with many good friends. A long-time member of Caledonia Congregational Church, she was actively involved in COGs (Caledonia Older Girls) and later, the Ladies Aid Society. For her 50th anniversary in 2001, she fulfilled her dream of traveling to Ireland, the land of her mother's family. She loved babies and found great joy in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Junella leaves a large and loving family that includes husband and best friend, Harold; children, John (Florence) Fritsch of Caledonia, Dr. Beth (John) Sharpe of Winter Park, Fla., Connie Kraus of St. Louis, Karen (Larry) Potter of Belvidere, Brenda (Dan) Kickertz and Kristi (Keith) Nelson of Rockford; grandchildren, Judy (Greg) Finch, Sheila (Frank) Foley, Christopher Fritsch, Patrick Sharpe, Alison Kraus, Carrie Potter, Elizabeth (Brian) Sandrock, Joshua Potter, Katie and Andrew Kickertz and Nathan Nelson; great-grandchildren, Jeremy Slack, Hannah Davis, Stephanie and Rebecca Sandrock and Ethan Potter; brother, Hobart (June) Gaar of Palm Dessert, Calif.; sister-in-law, Grace Gaar of Lakewood, Calif.; special niece, Donna Hansen of San Pedro, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by father and mother; brothers, Jack and Gerald Gaar; sister-in-law, Ruth Gaar; and grandson, Jason Kraus. Service for this wonderful woman at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 17, in Highland Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 9800 Route 76, Belvidere. Burial in Highland Memorial Gardens. Visitation from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 16, in the funeral home.

Published in the rrstar.com from 3/14/2008 - 3/20/2008.
I've been doing enormous amounts of research about the Johnson family, and I've come to a stumbling block: I can't seem to find any information about his grandchildren. My great-grandmother, a Vinny Matthews, is said to be either his grand-daughter or great-grand daughter. I've been trying desparately to find the liason between us and I can't come across it for the life of me. If any relatives have any information about Johnson's grandchildren, I'd greatly appreciate it. She lived in Huntington, West Virginia, if that happens to be of any help. Thanks a million!

Sincerely
Katherine Cook

Phillips enrolled in the First Tennessee Regiment (Confederate) in Greenevil on March 8, 1864. This Andrew J. Phillips then deserted on May 27, 1864. Trying to determine if this is the same A.J. Phillips who is buried in the Bethesda Cemetery in Greene County in 1903. This A.J. Phillips would have been the son of Royal Phillips.

John Stein origins

Johannes Stein and wife Christine appear in the St. James Church records in Greene Co. TN beginning in 1814. They appear to be the Johannes Stein and wife Christine who had children baptised at Pine Church in 1792 and Solomon Church in 1795 and 1802 in Shenandoah Co. VA. They also are probably the ones who had children baptised at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in York Co. PA in 1789 and 1790. John Stein first appears in tax records in Shenandoah Co. VA in 1791 also.

I believe this is the John Stein born Feb. 7, 1753 and baptised Jan. 18, 1756 at Tohicken Reformed Church in Bucks Co. PA. A brother David who also appears in York Co. was born May 10, 1755 and also baptised Jan. 18 1756. Their parents are Sebastian and Catharine Stein.

Now there is a marriage record at nearby Keller's Lutheran Church that says Adam Stein son of Peter of Darmstadt married Maria Barbara Walmer on March 8, 1754. A study of the records at Keller's Lutheran Church and Tohicken Church suggest to me that Sebastian and Philip and Adam and possibly others may be related. Sebastian and Philip Stein/Stone appear in tax records in 1778 in Bedminster township where Tohicken Church is located. Does anyone know if Sebastian and Philip are also sons of Peter Stein of Darmstadt Germany?

I checked the ship records and there is a Peter Stein (name also appears as Stayn) who emigrated in 1739 on the ship Samuel. His age is shown as 40. The age would be about right for him to have sons having children in the 1750s. I believe Sebastian and Philip Stein were also naturalized in PA and were living in Bedminster township in Bucks Co. Has anyone determined if this Peter Stein is the immigrant ancestor of John Stein of Greene Co. TN?

Jesse Johnson & Nancy/Ann Stanfield

My gr gr grandfather is Lytle Johnson b. abt. 1820 d. aft. 1880. He is the illegitimate son of Wiley Johnson the daughter of Jesse Johnson and Nancy Stanfield. There is data that he was Lytle Litewell Johnson and that he was Henry Lytle Johnson. Data that far back sometimes gets crossed and nicknames sometimes get in the way of true names. He is supposed to have been born in Wilkes County, NC. His son Henry Johnson was born 1846 in Carter County Kentucky. I have a Henry Johnson b. abt. 1839, KY, son of Mason Johnson b. 1807, NC. Mason is a son of Jesse Johnson and Ann Stanfield. Ann was the second wife of Jesse and they were married in Greenville, Greene County TN in 1798. We believe his first wife was Nancy Stanfield a first cousin to Ann. I am descended from Jesse and Nancy through Wiley, Lytle and Mason Lafayette Johnson and his daughter, my grandmother Della Mae Johnson. We also have speculation from a Stanfield researcher that Nancy is a nickname for Ann and that Nancy and Ann may be the same person instead of being cousins. The data we have from this researcher is that the Stanfields were Quakers. They may have married earlier in the Quaker fashion and later were disowned and had their marriage recorded at the county in 1798. I have read that if you find a Quaker line that recorded their marrige with the county then they are not practicing Quakers and have been disowned. Myself not being a Quaker nor knowing their customs, request help with this mystery of their marriage.
THOMAS MORGAN 1751 - 1845

As most folks know I have been working on the line of Thomas Morgan 1751 - 1845 for over 20 years. The one thing that I have search for, without success, is his grave. There are lots of Morgan researchers what have parts of the Morgan puzzle; but no one seems to reach back that far.

I would like to find his grave in order to honor him and his service in the American Revolution by having a grave marking ceremony -- similar to the one we had for James Davis (also of Greene Co TN). Should anyone like to look at the photos of that grave marking ceremony, they are located on the Hamilton Co. TN web site www.HCTGS.com

Thomas Morgan 1751 - 1845 lived in the area of Camp Creek and according to his early land records, his land was at the fork of Camp Creek.

If anyone has any knowledge about where people were buried in the 1845 era it may be a valuable clue in locating his grave.

William Morgan in Greene or adjacent Counties of TN

William Morgan born 1774 to Lewis or James Morgan of Bedford Co., VA says he was born in TN or VA. I have to assume he was born in Washington Co., that was in one of those two states. I am sure there are boundary issues with William's problam. However, one thing I am sure of is that William's wife was born in Tennessee because all his children state that their mother was born in TN. However, I need to find out who it is. I need help with finding all William Morgan marriages between 1790 and 1807. I know he was first married to Sarah Inman who died in 1790. He left his children Jubal and Suzannah to be raised by the Inmans. After that he disappears and I cannot find Jubal anywhere. Help with William is always greatly appreciated.
Susan

In the 1800 Census for Fayette County PA, Nancy Harman appears as head of household. However she does not appear to be listed as a free white female. Instead 2 people appear under All Other Free Persons. Nancy is the widow of John Harman.

Her son Christian later of Greene County lives nearby.

My question is does this census records indicate the Nancy might have been a Native American? There are claims that one or more of her son Christian Harman were of Indian descent.

My great grandfather walked there when he was just a very little kid to be an apprentice after his mother died. His father was named Thomas Morgan and his mother was sarah elizabeth harrison morgan. His name was Joseph Phillip Morgan, and he was born on oct 1875 and died in sept 15, 1952, had a brother named William that went there also. The lady that owned the farm, helped him to learn to read and write and he went on to work for the intermountain telephone company in greene and washington co. I am trying to find out more on this family to see if maybe they know anything else on Thomas and Sarah Morgan, I can't seem to find death dates for either of them. Thomas Morgan was the son Allen and Anna Johnson morgan and was born in 1850 had a twin sister susan. His wife was born about 1847-48. I hope someone may be able to help.

I am seeking info on LUTICE CARL BROWN he married JULIA ETHEL KELLER about 1905. Lutice's mother's first name was CORDA. I dont know her maiden name, but when Lutice was about 13, she married Thomas White. I don't know what happened to Lutice's father or even his name. Family history is that they were partial if not full blooded Indian. Lutice and Julia eventually settled in Oklahoma. Julia Keller was the daughter of James K. P. Keller and her mother's name was either Sarah or Alice. (James was married more than once) Lutice was born November 1885. Thanks!!

Key Family in Early Greene County

Hello everyone,
I'm requesting any knowledge anyone might have about the Key family in early Greene County, from roughly 1790 to 1810. Specific names include John Key (possible Captain in Rev. War, and son of Moses Key, Jr. according to Julia Lane). David and Hugh Key who show up on tax lists with John Kee/Key from 1798 to 1800. David and Hugh also show up on road crews, jury duties, etc. Hugh Key seems to leave sometime around 1807 to 1809. We believe he went to Wayne County, KY and is the Hugh Key that shows up in 1830-1850 Morgan County, TN. David is the father of Rev. John Key and grandfather of David McKendree Key. We're not sure if Capt. John Key died here or moved on somewhere else. No record of his death exists.

This Key family lived in the Carter Station area of Greene County, on Lick Creek and Gap Creek. I would love to hear any facts or oral history concerning these family members.

Thanks!
Feel free to email me at jutkey@gmail.com.

Reed

Hello all! I am researching Reed in and around Cocke, Greene, and Blount Counties in TN. I got your names off the Greene Co. Register of Ancestors. Take a look at this and see if any of you might fit in. This was written by my ggg gf. If you have any info, I am interested in hearing from you. Thank you, Cheryl Wright

MY GENEALOGY, AND LIFE AND TRAVELS, TOGETHER WITH
A Sketch of the Misfortunes that have Befallen Me in Life.

My grandfather on father's side was a native of Wales; he immigrated to America when a small boy, before the Revolutionary War. My grandmother on father's side was a native of Germany. She also came to America a small girl before the Revolution. Very soon after the war they were married in the State of Pennsylvania and emigrated to East Tennessee, then called the Territory of North Carolina. They settled on the waters of the Folachucky river, in a section of country that afterwards became Cock county. There they raised the following family: John Reed, my father; Rhoda Reed, who married Gabriel Holder; Robert Reed, who went to Georgia a single man and the family heard no more of him; Jesse Reed, who died before he was grown; Eliza Reed, who went to Kentucky, and there married and raised a large family; Nancy Reed, who married John Worth, my mother's brother, and they remained in Cock county until their death; George W. Reed, who was still in Cock county the last I heard of him; Elizabeth Reed, who married Zachariah McCone, they went to Kentucky; Margaret Reed, who married Tilchmond Buckner and went to Kentucky. My grandfather Reed died in Cock county when I was about 20 years old; my grandmother Reed then went to Kentucky to some of her children, a very old lady; that is the last I ever heard of her. This is about all I know of my father's family connection. My grandmother's maiden name I never heard as I recollect of. My grandfather and grandmother on father's (should be mother's) side were both natives of Wales. The(y) immigrated to America when they were both small, before the French war with the American Colonies, and my grandfather Thomas Worth, was in the battle of Braddock's defeat; after that he was with Washington through the whole of the Revolutionary struggle. At the close of the war he returned to Craven county, N.C. near Newbern, and remained there until my mother was nearly grown; then he removed to Cock county, Tenn. and settled on French Broad river, but staid there only a few years, when he moved to Buncombe county, N.C. and there remained till his death. He died when I was quite small; I can just recollect seeing him. I can't give the names of all his children according to age, but I can give their names and locality; the oldest son, Thomas Worth, left his father in North Carolina, and went to Maryland where he married, and from there he moved to New York, from whom sprang Gen. Worth, of Mexican war notoriety. Louis Worth went to Tennessee and married a widow Mucelhang, and moved west of the Mississippi river before the cession of Louisiana to the United States, which was the last ever heard of him by our family; John Worth married my father's sister as before stated. The girls names and marriage are as follow: Sitnah married a man by the name of Richmond and he died, and she married Thos. Love; she died without children. Rebecca Worth married John Durham and moved to Kentucky and from there to Limestone county, ?. Elizabeth Worth married Elijah Durham, brother of John, and moved to Kentucky; Delilah Worth married Thomas Craig and moved to Virginia; Susanah Worth married Thos. McMullen and moved to Stone river, Tennessee; Nancy Worth, my mother, married John Reed, my father, in Cock Co., Tenn., and remained but a short time and moved to Buncombe county, N.C. where I was born, Feb. the 2d 1805, they staid there but a short time and went back to Cock county, Tenn., and remained there until my father's death in May, 1807, leaving my mother with two little boys, my brother, near 5 years older, and myself, all that was living of 5 children. My mother remained a widow about 4 years, and married a man by the name of John Martin, by whom she had 13 children of whom only five ever sucked, 1 boy and 4 girls were raised. I know but little about them; I had moved from that County to Blount county, about 75 miles from there and only went to see her twice till her death. She died at about 65 years of age; her mother lived to be about 112 or 115 years of age. I left my stepfather and mother at the age of 16 years, and have shifted for myself ever since. On the 13th of October, before I was 20 years old, I was married to Sally Cox, daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Cox; we remained in Jefferson Co. Tenn. 3 years and in which time we had one child; it lived 4 months and died. We then moved to Roan county and staid one year; there Malinda was born; then we moved to Blount county and staid there 5 years; there Luther and Mary Elizabeth were born; Mary only lived to be three months old. Then in the Fall of 1833 we moved to the State of Missouri to Cole county; in 1833 my wife had another daughter, and it died the day after it was born, and my wife died four days afterwards, and I was left, not able to walk across the house, with two little children in a land of strangers, except two brothers-in-law. I remained unable to do anything for seven months. I then took a school for eight months, at the end of that time I married Delilah Martain, daughter of Louis Martain, and she lived one year, three months and three days, in which time she had a son, and on the 7th day of April 1837 she died, and left me with three little children, one only two months old. My trouble was so great that it did not seem to me that I could stay in that country. In September, '37, I gathered all together, and left my children with their uncle, and went to Texas and traveled over much of that country and returned to Arkansas and wintered there. In the Spring I sold my horse, bridle and saddle in Little Rock, took passage on a steamboat and went back to Missouri. I staid but a short time, become disgusted with a country that had bereaved me of all that I held dear. (except my children) I left it again and made my way to the western frontier of Arkansas, and plunged into the dark forest of the Indian country, and passed by the wigwams of the Cherokee, Choctaw and Creek tribes of Indians, seeking for something to soothe the mind, but all in vain. There was a vacuum that could not be filled among the children of the forests, so I returned to civilization again, staid five months in Arkansas, then went to Missouri to my brothers, staid there a few weeks and left for Memphis; there I staid a few days and sold my horse, bridle and saddle and took passage of boat to New Orleans; staid there a short time and returned to Baton Rouge, staid there four weeks at five dollars a day. I then left with the intention of going to Biloxi, but changed my notion and started for Jackson, Miss., got to Copiah county, there stopped and went to work, and after three years travail, and spending about thirteen hundred dollars, I began to meditate upon what I had done and what I was doing, and came to the conclusion that I could not live that way any longer. I then commenced looking around and found that the only plan to put a stop to my raving, was to marry again. So, I came to that determination and did so on the 28th day of July 1840. I married the daughter of Samuel and Tabitha Miller, & remained there nearly two years; then I moved to Choctaw county, where, after a little over three years, I made every preparation to go to Missouri after my children, which I did in the winter of 1845, and have remained in Choctaw ever since; and by my last wife who is still living with me, I have become the father of thirteen children of whom there is only 9 living now. I have written this to be left with my other papers, so that after I am gone to that world from whence no traveler has returned, my children may read it and have some knowledge of their origin, and of the trouble that I have passed through in this world. This the third day of June, 1866.
E.H. REED
