We have 3 DNA tests from the other Gray cousins and they match descendants from this Gray family, so this has to be my family too.

Katie

My family has been for years trying to find the parents for Lewis Allen Gray. We had a theory that William Gray and Mary Hammock were his parents. My cousin's husband, who is a Gray, took a DNA test, and now she is pretty sure that they are our relatives.

Audrey Gray

May 3 (1 day ago)

to Stephen, me, SPegler919
Ancestry autosomal test results just came in, and a 4th cousin match goes to John C. Hammock & Nancy Maples in their tree. Looks like theory about Mary Hammock & William Gray may be correct one as parents for Lewis Allen Gray.

John was born in 1819 but frankly, I can't seem to find anything of the family prior to that. Do you think his dad came from England? I have info of a mary hammock and William Gray being the father of my John Gray but the info is sketchy at best. Any info would be appreciated. thanks

1875 Peter Black, et al, vs Elisabeth Moore, et al

The following transcription is from the 1875 Chancery Court case, Peter Black, et al, vs. Elisabeth Moore, et al, held by the Grainger County Archives in Rutledge, Tennessee:

"No 703

Original Bill

Peter Black and Wife
vs
Elisabeth Moore et als

Filed Aug. 25, 1875
C. C. Smith C.&M.
By H. E. Smith D.C.&M.

"To the Hon. H. C. Smith Chancellor, Sitting in Chancery for the district composed of the County of Grainger on the 3" Monday of October, 1875.

The bill of complaint of Peter Black and his wife Mary Black (formerly Mary Moore) who are citizens of the State of Tennessee and who reside in Hamblen County

Exhibited against,

Elisabeth Moore, Mastin Moore, Thomas Moore, Boaz McAnally and his wife Elisabeth McAnally (formerly Elisabeth Moore), Charles Moore, Samuel Moore, Matthew Moore, Thomas Taylor and his wife Cornelia Taylor (formerly Cornelia Moore): All of whom are of lawful age; and James Moore who is under twenty one years of age, And all of whom reside in Grainger County.

Humbly complaining your orators show unto your honor that about May 1872, Richard Moore, who was a citizen of Grainger County, died intestate in said county, leaving the above first named defendant Elisabeth Moore his widow, and your orator Mary Black and all the other defendants named above except Boaz McAnally and Thomas Taylor, his children and heirs at law, That the defendant Boaz McAnally had intermarried with the defendant Elisabeth McAnally before the death of said Richard Moore, and the defendant Thomas Taylor has intermarried with the defendant Cornelia since his death.

He died seized of a tract of land situated in Grainger County, adjoining the lands of Russell Wyatt, David McAnally, John Harvill, James H. Gray (or the land now occupied by him), Wilson Wyatt, and the Grantham farm, and containing about 300 acres, being the same tract upon which he lived up to the time of his death and the only real estate of which he died seized.

Administration was granted to Mastin Moore and Thomas Moore, two of the defendants, on his estate, which has so far progressed as to show that no sale of realty will be required to pay debts. Complainants here expressly charge that sufficient personal assets came or by proper diligence ought to have come into the hands of said Administrators to satisfy all the ends of administration.

No dower has been assigned to the defendant Elisabeth, and no proceeding had to that end. Sometime in the year 1874 your orator Peter Black made a contract with the defendant James Moore for the purchase of his undivided interest in the real estate above described, agreeing to give him therfor the sum of ninety dollars; of which sum he paid him at or about the time of making the contract the sum of twenty six dollars. There was never any conveyance made, nor indeed could there be; for as before stated said James was at the time and still is a minor. This fact was not known to your orator at the time of making the payment or trade. Indeed he was led to suppose it was otherwise from the fact that said James was, and had been conducting business for himself.

Your orators concede that the defendant Elisabeth Moore is entitled to be endowed with one third in value of the realty herein described, including the homestead. And they charge that when this shall have been done, or even without this the tract of land cannot be so partitioned among those entitled to share therein, as to be advantageous to them. The lack of water, of timber, of buildings, and the comparative smallness of the shares would render the shares comparatively valueless to those entitled. But they believe the entire tract as a whole or in two or more parts may be sold for a fair price.

Your orators are advised that the complainant Mary Black is entitled to the use and benefit of her portion of said real estate, now and that she is entitled to come into your honors court and have a decree for the partition of the same by sale or otherwise. Your orator Peter Black is advised that there exists in his favor and equitable lien upon the portion or share of the defendant James for the twenty six dollars paid him under the contract above recited, and interest there on from the date of payment, and is entitled to have a decree therefor.

Your orators therefore pray that the parties named as defendants above, be made such by due process from your honors court, that they be required to answer the allegations of this their bill. That all proper references be made. That dower be assigned to the defendant Elisabeth Moore under decree of your honor. That the remainder of the land after dower be sold either as a whole or in parts, under the direction of the court; that the sale include the remainder interest of the various heirs, in the dower to be assigned to the widow. That the purchase price be partitioned under the decrees of your honors court. That a lien be declared upon the part of the defendant James in favor of complainant Peter Black for the payment made him as herein before set forth, or in case partition in kind is found practical, then upon the part that may be assigned to said James and the same sold to discharge the same. Your orators pray for general relief.

Hodges
Solicitor

State of Tennessee}
County of Hamblen}

This day came Peter Black one of the complainants in the foregoing bill, before me, and made oath in due form of law that he believes the facts therein set forth and recited are true.

Peter Black

Sworn to and subscribed
August 25 1875

A. J. Donaldson J. P.
of Hamblen County”
Spring House Post Office is shown on Plate CXLII (142) of the Official Military Atlas of the Civil War. It is about 6 1/2 miles southwest of Rutledge on the road from Rutledge to Knoxville (now Highway 11, Lee Highway, Rutledge Pike). It was probably near where Owl Hole Gap Road intersects Hwy. 11 from the southeast on a current map.

Hello all - I'm trying to locate anyone that might be researching the Nashes of Grainger County. My 2nd great grandfather was Samuel Jasper Nash (1840-1926), son of Thomas Nash and Margaret Dotson or Dodson. His obituary indicates that he was orphaned at a young age, and he moved from TN to MO by 1861. Some researchers indicate that Thomas Nash was the son of Arthur Nash and Eve Sharp, but I've found no records to confirm that, and other researchers show no sign of Arthur & Eve having a son named Thomas. I'd appreciate any assistance or pointers!

I am looking for some guidance. I found this line of John McDonald and Margaret Watkins through a FamilyTree DNA comparison with my direct ancestor - William McDonald. There is only a genetic seperation of 3. Our oral tradition puts us in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in the mid 1700's if not earlier. The earliest event we can document is William McDonald marrying Elizabeth Sadler in Mecklenburg Co, NC in 1789.

Would anyone be interested in corresponding? While I do not think we descend from this particular John McDonald, we may be descended from an earlier common ancestor.

(as their 1st few children born NC),John and James are the only two that had McDaniel sons,

I don't know where any of their male descendants are living...nor do I know which Line this Eli came from, I have heard so many different stories that don't have any actual facts attached, so I just try to document back to Eli & Betsy and call it good, we have not found any McDaniel cousins as yet that match my DH's Roach line Y-DNA or FF tests @FTDNA...Our son is going to test with 23 & me, as soon as his kit arrives, so will see what comes up there

From what I know today DNA from descendants of Eli McDaniel, Major and Linvil/John McDaniel are very separate lines. Eli appears to be R1a (Clan Donald Chief) while John (1740) McDaniel who married Margaret Watkins and Linvil McDaniel/McDonald are a perfect match to R1b-L513+L193+ individuals.

Martha McDaniel Thompson combined the lines in her 1990 manuscript (they were separate in her earlier works) She used Linvil's wife's ancestors from Richmond County, Virginia to support her theory that John and Eli were brothers and their father was from there as well. This has been shown to be a false assumption. Or at least the DNA does not support it. There were many John and Eli McDaniel's running around the area, it would be easy to get two different lines or more combined...

If you are from Eli McDaniel who was a Captain/Major in the revolutionary war then the DNA evidence indicates strong case for Clan Donald Chief descent. Eli's service also indicates a high level of education and probably a Military/Political tradition in the family.

If you link to a different Eli then there is much research to do, do you have any McDaniel/McDonald direct paternal cousins that have or could do DNA testing?

Skip

Skip

I have found record of them coming from Grainger, Tn. However that is it. As for Mirah(Elmira,Almira,Mira) I have been unable to find any records of her what so ever on Ancestry.
They are the parents of my Gr. Gr. Grandfather James Andrew Bullion Born in Grainger and Died in Wise Va and buried at the Bullion Cemetery that has been lost to nature over the years.
I am looking for any info that anyone has that could help.
It has been rumored through the years that they both may be of full blood Cherokee Descent and that may be why I can find no other records of them.

Again anyones help would be greatly appreciated.
