I am looking for the burial site of my gggrandfather, Isacc Hutton. He died in 1888, but lived in GIles CO. in 1880. He also had brothers, Jim and Ben, who lived in the area.
My gggrandmother was a Mitchell, Martha Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Mitchell and Nancy Allen Mitchell. Would like to know their burial site. If I find one, maybe all are in the same cemetery.
Any help would be appreciated.
Mauridell Hutton Bennett
Lmbennett1@verizon.net

I am trying to locate an early marrige of Christopher Bell and Malinda Calhoon,1832-1837,in Giles county Tn. The court house was no help. According to them all early records were lost in a fire. If any one knows of any justice of the peace records or any rercords that are around, I would be very grateful. Bobbie Bell

I am looking for any information on these allied families although the Bass record is well documented. David C. George married Nancy Elizabeth Bass August 16th, 1827 in Giles Co. TN. In the Fall of 1836, the George family and that of Thomas Larkin Webb came to Jackson County, Missouri - both are my gggrandfathers. Thomas's father William Larkin Webb married three Brown women - kinship unknown. First Matilda Brown, second Sarah "Sally" Brown, third Sarah E. Brown.

I am researching my g grandparents. SAMUEL APPLETON b. 1847; married NANCY ELMINA ??? b. 1858; they were married in 1870. He states he was born in AL on 2 censuses and TN on 2. She was born in TN. I have them on the 1880,1900 and 1910 census in Giles Co. TN. On the 1920 census they are in Limestone Co. AL. Have not been able to find them on any other census. I don't know who his father was but I found a Samuel on the 1850 Fayette Co. TN census age 2; father James R. mother Elizabeth Appleton. I am not sure if this is his parents. Have been unable to find another Samuel anywhere else. I don't know Nancy's maiden name.

Their children are: Hiram b. 1874; William b. 1876; John b. 1878; Robert David b. 1879; Mickey (my grandmother) b. Dec. 1881; Easter b. July 1886; Mary b. July 1888; Geneva b. May 1890; Lela b. Aug. 1892; Douglas b. March 1894; Weakley b. July 1898; Franie (I believe died young)

There is a Samuel Appleton b.1850 d. July 14, 1923 buried at Prospect TN that states his parents James b. VA, Cornelia b. AL. I believe this could be him. Also Nancy Appleton 1856-1953 is buried in William Brown Cemetery. I believe this could be my Nancy.

They Had children in Vito, AL and I know that is where she was living when she died.

Any help would be greatly appreciated in determining who their parents were and their linage.

Jim

I am looking for a picture in uniform of any enlisted member of the 53rd Tennessee Infantry Regiment, CSA, from Giles County or Lawrence County. If you have a picture that you can e-mail to me, it will be most helpful. I am trying to identify the uniform used by Company G, 53rd Tennessee Infantry Rgiment, the unit of my great-grandfather Peter Counce. If you can't e-mail a picture, can you describe the uniform--type and shape of cap, general description of the cut of the coat, button style and placement. Or perhaps you can direct me to an on-line picture of the uniform.

Thank you for any assistance.

Does anyone have access to info from the Fayetteville newspaper for obit. of Sadie Gertrude Williams who died July 10, 1928? I was also told that a few days or weeks later, her grieving husband, Sam, took his own life. I don't know the date for his death. These folks were my grandparents. My own parents died when I was a teenager, so I never got to talk to my father in greater detail about this tragedy that happened in his family when he was young. If anyone can tell me if there was anything in the newspaper about those events, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you,
frh

I am trying to find the marriage date of William Lillow Morris and Sallie Wilsford. Both were born in Giles County. William was raised by his grandfather Joshua Morris. Their oldest child, Rosco Morris was born November 1, 1899 in Giles County, and is buried near his Greatgrandfather, Joshua, in Morristown Cemetery, in Giles County. I believe they married somewher around 1898 or 1899 in Giles County. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jimmie

Goodnight, Elijah

Elijah Goodnight, son of Henry was found in the 1840, 1850 and 1860 census records of Giles County. In 1860, he, along with daughter Samantha and son Frank, are in the household of Robert Saunders. Elijah was 52 years old in 1860 so I figured his son R. A. who served in the CSA from Giles County was the only soldier. However, Elijah apparently moved to Indiana where his daughter Samantha married Gideon Miller on 22 Oct 1865. They then moved to Greene Co. Iowa where Elijah died 22 Oct 1868. He is buried in the Kendrick Township Cemetery. His cemetery transcription has G.A.R on it which would indicate he was in the Grand Army of the Republic an organization of Union veterans. Does anyone have any record of Elijah's war service? I do not find anything in the usual indexes such as the Soldiers and Sailors database.

Ted Stout

Need to know his wife's name. Walter died abt.1834. His children were:

SAMUEL A. WEST b: abt 1808 in SC married to MANERVA
WALTER J. WEST
JAMES W. WEST b: abt 1814 in SC
MARY WEST mar. to DAVID M. KINCAID ( in the 1850 census for Giles Co I have found a David M.
Kimbrough and Birds of a Feather by Mary K. Harris

Does anyone know where the papers of Mary Kimbrough Harris are located? She was a Kimbrough researcher in Giles Co. and wrote some history of the Kimbrough family called "Birds of a Feather." Some of this was published in the Giles Co Historical Magazine starting about 1993. I am looking for Chapter X and beyond.
Also she had an old Bible or copies of a Bible of James Kimbrough and Nancy Turner. Does anyone know where a copy of the Bible can be found? Some years ago a photography studio in Pulaski supposedly had copies of this Bible. I believe it was Mitchell's Studio or something similiar. Has anyone heard of such a studio?

Does anyone know the name of this cemetery or whose land it is located on? Thanks

Looking for info or possible leads, ANY thoughts welcomed:

Land Seals m.1879 Giles Co, TN to Kitty Jane Moore, dau of Elias Moore and Mary Polly Williams Moore. Found in 1880 Limestone Co, AL census listed as Land and Jane with son George age 2. 1910 Census shows Kitty a widow in Ellis Co, Texas. She remained there until her passing in 1946.

1870 Giles Co, TN Census shows Jane (Kitty Jane) with her siblings being cared for by a mulatto family Thomas Dismukes, wife Jane, son William (HH 134), but no parents (HH 135), Robert b.1857 NC, Jane b.1859 NC, Henry b.1863 NC, William b. 1867 NC, Samuel b.1868 NC. I have info on Robert W., Kitty Jane, Samuel( who appears to be my ggpa Thomas Barrett), James H, and Willis Field/Filmore. Still looking for any info on William and Henry.

Robert married 1880 in Limestone Co, AL to Carrie Peace. Youngest brother Willis b.1874 m.1889 in Limestone Co to Nora Harwell, Kitty married 1879 in Giles Co, and James H. b.1871 m. Anna Terry of Giles/Limestone Co, in 1901, Wise Co, TX. James Henry Moore b.1871 death cert states he was born in Marshall Co, TN.

1880 Census of this Moore family find them in Lauderdale Co, AL, with James and Willis b. after 1870 in AL. Jane is living in Limestone Co, and Henry is not in the household but could possibly be the Haywood Moore living as a hired hand nearby. A Haywood Moore married Henrietta Ada Terry in Giles Co, Oct 1880, sister to Anna Terry, and Henry Moore's are found marrying in Limestone Co, AL about this time too, so either is possible. This Moore family has not been found in the 1860 Census. It is believed they lived in Giles Co, TN about 1868 - 1871, moving to AL in 1871, found in Lauderdale Co, in 1880, moving to Limestone Co about 1880/1 and staying in the area until 1894, then migrating to Arkansas 1895-1898, then on to Fall, Wise and Ellis Co, Texas before 1900. They were very mobile and share croppers.

Willis Moore was known to have lived in Sheffield, Colbert Co, AL just over the county line from Lauderdale Co, between 1893-1895 as he had 2 son's born there.

1	Elias Moore (1820 - 1896) B: Bet. 1820–1831 in North Carolina, USA, M: Bet.
Jacob Almon and Rebecca Stanfield lived and raised family in Giles County. So did Ransom Wells and Mary "Polly" Neal. This was about 1785 and into the 1800s. If anyone has info on these two families I would appreciate it. These two had children who married and moved to Ill. I need their ancestries if anyone is working on these lines.
Thanks Marian

Robert Stephenson and Katherine Shields

I am searching for a Robert Stephenson b. 1793 in York Co,S.C., who is said to have married a Katherine Shields. A fellow Stephenson researcher claimed she had a Robert Stephenson b. 1793 who married a Katherine Shields. Robert Stephenson was in Giles Co,TN in 1814. His brother Samuel Stephenson married Mary Shields. Samuel Stephenson went to Limestone Co,Alabama by 1822 and I think Robert Stephenson followed them to Alabama. Robert Stephenson and his wife are said to have had a son William Jackson Stephenson b. Alabama. This William Jackson Stephenson went to McLean Co,IL. and was on the 1895 Census of Brookyln Township in Poweshiek Co,Iowa. The Shields Genforum has an Alexander Shields b.South Carolina and a Leander Shields b. TN living in the same places as this William Jackson Stephenson in IL. I find this interesting since Alexander and Leander are names found among the Shields in Giles Co,TN. I know that George Shields and Alexander Barron were living in Pendleton Co,SC in 1800. Robert Stephenson was a witness to a land transaction between George Shields,Alexander Barron Sr,and Alexander Barron Jr. in 1814. I think it is quite possible that Robert Stephenson did marry one of the Shields'girls.
On the 1895 census of Brooklyn,Township,Poweshiek Co,IA is William Stephenson, age 68,b.Ala. His wife Polly Perkins is also listed. They married in Illinois in 1850 and a William J. Stephenson purchased land in McLean Co,IL.in 1851.

I’m looking for more information on my Great Uncle Carlos Mason. He is my paternal Grandfather, William Henry Mason, brother. I’m not sure where Uncle Carlos grew up; it could be Morgan County or Limestone County Alabama (or any place really; we don't know much).

I do know Uncle Carlos lived in Ardmore, Giles County, Tennessee with his wife Peggy. I don’t know Peggy’s maiden name. As a little girl we would visit them often on their small farm. Carlos and Peggy had 3 children Hoyt (or Hoytt), Terry, and Barbara. Uncle Carlos passed away in December 1980 and Peggy and the children may have passed away as well.

All information is greatly appreciated.

Tracie Mason Holton
Seattle, WA
1878 County Map showing landowners

In a book on Heritage Quest, I found a portion of an 1878 map of Giles County showing landowners (see attached) and giving the Tenn State Library & Archives as the source. The map was compiled by D.G. Beers & Co. The TSLA website says "Between 1871 and 1907, the Beers Co. of Philadelphia did a series of maps of Tennessee counties showing landowners' names and the approximate location of their farms. These maps are available for Bedford, Davidson, Gibson, Giles, Hamilton, Haywood, Knox, Madison, Marshall, Maury, Montgomery, Rutherford, Shelby, Sumner, Williamson, and Wilson Counties."

In reply to my email to TSLA (reference.tsla@state.tn.us), they responded: "The 1878 Beers map of Giles County is Map #1051 in our collection. It consists of six separate sections. The fee for reproduction of these sections is $5.00 per shot. The total fee would be $30.00. If you wish to order a copy, send a check or money order for that amount (payable to TSLA) and mail your request to Tennessee State Library and Archives, ATTN: Manuscripts Section, 403 Seventh Avenue North, Nashville, TN 37243-0312."

Less than a week after sending my check, I received the six 18"x24" sheets (i.e., the overall map is 3'x 6'). The repro quality is just fair but you can clearly read landowner names overlaid on the map showing roads, etc. of that era. It took a little bit of work with a topo map to get my bearings but the map(s) is a great resource.

I'll send a follow-up that describes each sheet by civil districts covered in case you want to purchase only the area where your ancestors lived.
I have foundgreat-great-grandfather Wiley Jamison (later family used Jimerson) in Giles county -- in the Census records for 1840 and 1850, and on a 1836 tax register. He seems to have been born ca 1800 and he seems to have died after the Census of 1850 and before the 1860 census.

I'd like to know if and where he's buried in Giles Co. In 1836, he was in District 14. The 1850 Census has him in the 8th District. Are those points of help in locating a cemetery?

His wife was Elizabeth, and I have some reason to think possibly her maiden name was Hardison (Hardeson). Are there any here who are tracing either of those lines?

Hi,
I'm looking for information on Clyde (?) Estelle Bennett. She was my grandmother and according to stories she was born in Guiles County, TN about 1906. According to some research she had a sister named, Mat(t)ie Bennett. I believe that her mother's name was Laura Dobbs (?) and father was Frank A Bennett. Any information concerning her line will be much appreciated.
You can contact me via email at: jnm0354@yahoo.com
Again, thank you for any assistance.
Jacqulene(Jackie) Nevada Mace

I visited Pulaski last fall for several days doing research on this family. It was disappointing that none of the children's or grandchildren's births or marriages for this family were recorded in the archives there eventhough it is clear from evidence this Moore clan resided in Giles continously from about 1809 until 1840, when all the births occured. I do have the spouse names and the birth dates, just no record documents.

It came to my attention while there that many of the important records for Giles County are being held in the private collections of the good local families still residing in the County.

If you are willing to help me with records of the births or marriages of the siblings of the Moores please contact me at:
Jim Moore jim62208@peoplepc.com

I am doing family research on Margaret Criswell Horn Brown. I know she married a Mr. Horn about 1827 or 1828 in Lawrence Co., Giles Co.,TN or Lauderdale Co., AL area. They had a daughter Martha Ann, my ggg grandmother, in1829 born in AL and a son, George, also born in AL in 1831. Mr. Horn died around 1831-1832. We can not find the first name of Margaret Criswell Horn's husband. We do know for sure that Margaret's parents were Samuel Criswell and Patience Sealy Criswell who lived in Giles Co.,TN. Samuel Criswell died in 1824 and Patience died later. I believe Mr. Horn's parents were William Horn who died around 1814 or 1815 in Giles Co., TN and Nancy Horn who died in Lawrence Co., TN in 1833. Around 1834 Margaret Horn and her 2 children, Martha Ann and George, moved to IL to live with her brother. If anyone knows any information on these families or knows who this Mr. Horn was I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
Jan

I'm looking for a cemetery called "Old Bailey Graveyard". It is mentioned in the Pulaski Citizen of Dec. 2, 1897 as the resting place of at least four Boatrights. Two brothers and two sisters who were buried side by side. It may be located in the Yokely/Old Lynnville area as that is where they lived. A search of the Giles County cemetery book doesn't list a cemetery of this name nor list the deceased.

He's on the 1836 tax roll (Dist. 14); he's listed in the 1840 and 1850 Censuses as well with his wife Elizabeth and three children (James, Mary, Martha and Elisha). However, he apparently died before 1860, as he's not listed in the Census with the rest of the family (nor is James). The family is in the Memphis area in 1860.

Is he buried in a Giles County cemetery (most likely so)? If so, where, and when did he die?

James is my great-great grandfather; he was married by 1860, with one child. Can't find him either.

Any tidbits of information would be most welcome and appreciated.

James G. Hubbell b.Feb 1860

Searching for the parents of James. He, his wife Jessie, and their infant son Clarence were living in Dist. 12 of Giles Co. in 1880. I have been able to locate other Hubbell's in TN and in Giles Co., in particular, in 1870, but James is not among them. James later relocated to TX about 1899, but until then remained in TN.
Samuel Stephenson was born in York County,S.C. in 1797. Samuel's sister,Margaret married James Montgomery in York Co,S.C. in 1817. All these people migrated to Giles Co,TN before 1820. Samuel Stephenson had a son James H. Stephenson who appears on the 1860 census of Giles Co,TN:
1860 US Federal Census, Southern Subdivision, Giles Co, TN
429/411
James H Stephenson, 31, 1829, farmer, AL
Martha M Stephenson, 33, 1827, wife, AL
Mary A Stephenson, daughter, 4, 1856, AL
John W Stephenson, son, 3, 1857, AL
Martha D Stephenson, daughter, 1, 1859, TN
Amanda Montgomery, 27, 1833, AL (Note on census: Religion-Insane)
James H.Stephenson married Martha Manerva Montgomery in Limestone Co,Al in 1852. If the information is correct that I have there was a James G. Montgomery living in Limestone Co,Alabama in 1850 who was born in North Carolina in 1780. In his house was a Martha M. Montgomery, age 25,b.Alabama.
I don't believe this is the James Montgomery who married Margaret Stephenson in York Co,S.C.
James H. Stephenson and wife and James'brother Sylvester Brown Stephenson went from Giles Co,TN.to Ellis County,TX where they appear on census records of 1890 and 1900.
I am also interested in the marriage of a Joseph Montgomery to Mary Polly Brunson as I believe there is a connection to the Brunsons of Giles Co,TN.
If anyone has addition information on the Montgomerys of Limestone Co,Alabama it would be greatly appreciated.
