White, Gamble, Gibson, Davenport, Hillhouse family. Giles Co. TN

John White/Sarah Gambill (Gamble)

To any serious researchers,
I am looking for any information on Sarah Gambill (Gamble) born 1745-1755 Married to John White born 1740-1750(unsure about date). I have a Family Data Collection document I found on Ancestry.com that shows Sarah and John had a son named James Madison White born on Aug. 6, 1809. This contradicts much of the info on most websites or personal blogs because most records show John White died about 1808, a year before James Madison White was born. Goodspeeds states that John white died while James was a small Lad. According to the records John and Sarah would have been in their fiftys or sixties at James Madison whites birth! Other info that I found on internet postings show Sarah Gambill as a mid-wife and stating “she never had any children of her own“. What I am looking for is somebody with any records or information connecting my ggg grandfather James Madison White with John White or Sarah Gamble. If the records are incorrect maybe you could point me in the right direction. Or maybe somebody has come across another John White and Sarah Gambill (Gamble)

Here is what I know and can prove, James Madison White was Born to John White and Sarah Gambill (Gamble) on the 6th of July 1809 ( Family Data Collection Records), James was born in Giles County or possibly whites county, middle Tenn. He founded the first Sunday school in Lawrence County Missouri (1840). He served as a Judge of the western district from 11 Oct.1856-1857 in Verona. James was also Listed as the first Post Master of Verona (1857). He was the founder of Verona in Lawrence county Missouri (1868). James gave the railroad one-half interest in his land to build a Railroad Station, now Verona, the depot was built about 1870 and closed in 1938. According to census records, His residences included Giles or whites county Tenn. from 1809-1831, he lived in Spring River, Lawrence county Missouri 1860-1870. From 1880 to his death in 1891 he lived in Verona Missouri probably Barry county Missouri, they made many changes in county lines during this time, most likely it was the same residence. James was Married to Anna Gibson About 1826 in Giles Tenn. until her death in 1858, James married the widow Nancy Irwin the following year (1859 in Barry county Missouri).

While Married to Anna Gibson He Had eleven children, John O. (1831-1889), Moore Gibson (1833-1854), William Newton (1835-1854), Sarah M. (1836-1913), Gideon Lafayette (1839-????), Alfred Alexander Burton (1842-1922), James C.(1845-1857 ), David A. (dates Unknown), Leona Isabel (1850-1910), Finis E. (1856-1919), and Mary Jane (dates unknown). James Madison White had no children with Nancy Irwin. James Madison White died on 13th of Dec. 1891 and is buried next to his second wife Nancy Irwin in Spring River Cemetery, Verona Missouri. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Mount Vernon Missouri.

I have records and photos of James Madison White and most of his descendents. I am More than willing to share what I have for information that will help me further my research! You may e mail me at kinokino42@hotmail.com.

Sincerely,

Andrew White

I am pretty sure your Caroline and mine are not the same. Caroline was born about 1813, married Amasa Exell, then James Baliley. What I can't prove is that this is my Caroline. Her husbands will has Caroline's mother as Elizabeth. Not the same name I have for her mother, but could be a middle name. And Benjamine was dead. Like you, I keep all the info in the hope one day it will connect. I just don't list it in my rootsweb site. Hopefully one day someone will do a DNA test and prove it.
Yes, relly would prefer dirct contact as opposed to the message aboard.
Look forward to hearing from you.
David.

I understand, I hate to add anything to my line unless I can prove it, but it is so hard to prove anything that far back. I sometimes add things with a note that the fact has not been proven, just so I have it case someone does prove it. I don't know how they can. I have Nicholas who is the first one, for sure, I have been to his grave. Then I go to Nathan and on down. That much I do know. I do have a Caroline, but I don't have who she married, and it could very likely not be the same person. She is Nicholas J. Long and Sarah Ann Howells daugher, born in 1849. Is this the same person you are looking for? I will write down your email address and list my line for you, if you like. I know this gets so frustrating at times, I also get that way. I have been researching my family line for almost 30 years now. I will try to get that email to you in the next couple of days, grandkids are coming until tomorrow evening. Hope there is something in what I have that helps you!

I connected all of them the best that I could, please understand, 100% proof is impossible, before the 1840 census records. Most is a gut feeling based on the family names carried down through generations, places each line lived etc. I will be glad to share what I think to be the family we all came from.

A lady posted a message that mentioned a Robert Stevenson in the deeds of Giles Co,TN. I was identifying that this Robert Stevenson did not belong to the Elam Stevenson family of Giles. I also gave some additional information on Henry Stevenson.

There were several Robert Williamses in the immediate vicinity of Pisgah that I have found over the years. The Robert born in 1805 was probably the son of Joseph Williams and they were from Virginia. They lived a little closer to Bunker Hill.

Another Robert Williams was the brother of Mary Alexander Williams Paine who was married to James Paine. Pictures of their gravestones have recently been placed on the website. He was born earlier than the other two, around 1780 or so, I think. I have his will from Person Co., NC and Giles Co., TN which he filed in both places.

The other Robert Williams in the immediate vicinity was born circa 1795 in North Carolina, and I have not been able to determine whether he is kin to the Robert Williams from Person County, NC or not. His widow, Julia Lucy Williams(b1802), is probably the "Mrs. Williams" on the DeBeers map on my site. She was from Brunswick Co., VA and has connections to the Brunswick Virginia and the Giles Co., TN Abernathys and the Brunswick Virginia and Giles Co., TN Lucys, of course. His son, Robert Williams, born in 1838, also lived next to her and is shown on the map.

I may also be interested in the Bells, especially Adam Bell, whose wife might have been Jane Munford, and who might have been born in Laurens Co.,South Carolina, circa 1800.

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/w/i/l/Joe-M-Willi...
(DeBeers map is under "Family Photos.")

There is also a picture of my Solomon family for someone who asked about my Solomon kin(on my maternal side).

Joe Max Williams

Do you have much information on the Baldwin's ? Nancy's sister Sarah A. Baldwin married a John W. Bassham. Well the Desposition says " Those who were present saw us married were old man, Joseph Rogers and his son Joseph, Nancy Rogers ( my sister), Wm. Tillman, Wm Hardy, Andrew J. Knight and Ellen Johnson." This is the words of Sarah A. Baldwin. Spencer J. Rogers says " My Father or Brother Joseph Rogers married Ms Bassham sister Nancy Baldwin she and joe are both dead." I am not sure if it is father or brother. I would like any info that you want to share.

Corey Holmes.

Yea, Elam had a son named Thomas. But, Thomas was alive and kicking in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses; married to a different woman; father of children whose names don't match my line.

Like I said originally, my line does not appear to be related to the Elam Stevenson line.

Yes I am aware of Spencer J Rogers b. 1814 and his father Joseph Rogers who married Nancy Baldwin. I was not aware of Joseph Rogers a brother of Spencer. I had a Josiah Rogers b. 1811 . At this point I do not think this family is related to my line. but sometimes I get surprised. I found Wileys father who was Coleman Rogers b. 1815 in Tuscaloosa Co., AL. Wiley was born in Tuscaloosa Co. Alabama. but it took me forever to find that out. There was a whole clan of Rodgers, Rogers in Tuscaloosa Co., AL they came out of South Carolina.

My great grandparents were Robert T. Williams b. 1845 and Louisa Catherine Young b. 1848, both of Pulaski. Robert T. Williams was the son of Robert Williams born 1805. Louisa Catherin Young was the daughter of Archabald Smith Young and Louisa Catherine Abernathy of Bradshaw. The date 1912 sounds a little late bur these people sound like family.
John Norwood jmnorw@swbell.net

I have a problem. My great-great grandfather came from this county and was the son of Darling Tidwell as far as we can tell but we can't seem to find any records of his "death" before he came to Texas. He apparently had killed a man and escaped from the transport boat on the mississippi and went oklahoma, then later on to texas. His wife in Tennessee would have been Martha Rutledge. If you think you have any info to help me with I would greatly appreciate it.

No Martha didn't go with him. He escaped the boat that transferred prisoners on the mississippi River and ran to Oklahoma and supposedly married Mary Husey but I don't know whether it was under wilson, tidwell or another surname. Everything i have before he married Mollie Williamson is kinda sketchy but it came from a pretty reliable source in my own family. He was born in 1852. His father was Darling Manuel Tidwell and his mother Roxanne McCracken as far as I can fathom.... Everything I've found seems to link him to being English... I just pray I'm not following the wrong line. The funny thing about grandpa John is that after he killed a man over a hog and escaped to the territory, he came to texas where he became a preacher in allen's chapel. lol if that isn't a bit hypocritical.... I've found a John V tidwell from Darling and I'm thinking it may be him but can't find anything bout him after he was 23 or 24... Not even his marriage is showing up to the first woman.... Please write me back I enjoy talking about histories and appreciate you messaging me
sincerely
michelle

Ok the thing with John is I have the records for all of his family here in texas and know that my g-grandfather (his son was born in OK then migrating to Texas.. All of our family history before that date is all oral.. Unfortunately my grandmother could not stand Eugene (Johns son) or his wife so when a lady came to look for family records from that side she gave everything to this woman and nobody seems to know who she is.... Apparently from everything I've heard from my father that my g-grandmother wasn't a very nice lady... If you could I would really love to speak with you over my e-mail so I could forward you the information that I do have... but you are right I will hate to find tat i've been following the wrong line all this time lol cuz ur right about the fingernails i won't have any left! From what everyone knows my John ended up with 3 wives... I can find his name when Im looking up my grandfather and his siblings but if I try to Find Eugene the only thing I can find is a couple of siblings that were born in texas when he was little coming from OK to Tx and I have census records for them all being here... It's so hard finding anything about him cuz it's like he appeared out of nowhere I just hope he didn't lie to the family about what his real last name had been.... I swear men cause more problems lol.. thanks so much for what ur doing... If it takes me a little time getting back to ou Im sorry, I manage a restaurant and have long hours.

David,

The 1880 Limestone Co., AL (Beat 5) has the following census record:

Augustus Barber 35
Elizabeth 34
Ella 10
Anna 9
Arlenus 8
Henry 7
Sallie 6
Mattie 2

I am not a subscriber to Ancestry.com, so I only have access to their transcribed record.

I believe this to be Gustavus Henry Barber who is head of household in the 1870 Giles Co., TN census with wife, Anney and a daughter Ellin (age 2).
