Hi All--
I am looking for information on the following families of Gibson County:

Jordan Sheridan ADKINS who married Ivey Poole;
Aubrey BOOHER (or Booker?) who married Eva;
Horace HICKS who married Maud (or Ellah) Adkins;
Joseph Oscar MCKNIGHT who married M. Florence Adkins;
Tom C. MORRIS who married Otellie (spelled various ways) Adkins.

Jordan ADKINS was my grandfather who died before I was born. Jordan, Maud, Eva and Otellie were siblings. M. Florence Adkins was their aunt. The McKnights lived in Nashville at some point. The other families worked at the cotton mills in Humboldt (1920) and Trenton. Some moved east to Dyer, Lauderdale, and Tipton Counties. I have been told that Horace HICKS was a preacher.

I am interested in any information on these families (marriage dates, children, etc.). Thanks!

Karin Simpson

Wright's Chapel Cemetery

Does anyone know the location of a cemetery by the name of Wright's Chapel? I am assuming it is a cemetery but it may refer to a small community in or around Gibson County.

I have a genealogy chart, composed by a Mr. Elam years ago, that lists my 3rd Great Grandfather, "James M. (Jimmie) Senter b.09/19/1812 d.12/03/1879, Buried: Wright's Chapel, Wife: Flora McNeil b.10/19/1810 d.07/27/1884." However, there is conflicting information in the Goodspeed Biographies regarding James M. Senter's date of death...in Section for William M. Senter (James' son) it states James died in 1878. In another section, biography for Capt. N. A. Senter (another of James' sons), Goodspeed gives date of death for James as 1881.

Also, Goodspeed states that James had four children. I only know of the two, William and Neill (N. A.). If anyone has additional information or can refer me to other sources, it would be greatly appreciate.

Hello,
I am looking for info on John W Clifft. He is listed as living in Gibson Tn. on the 1910 Census with his son Gurchville Gray Clifft (35) his wife Marion Francis (Gibson)(33), Daughter Opal (married EI Cantrell in 1917, Daughter Opal (married Hunter Jones in 1918), Bessie (3) and Jack (19) and John W Clifft (78). John was my gggrandfather thru his youngest son (George Washington Clifft)
In the 1920 Census, Churful Clifft(45), Francis (43) and Vesa Del (12) are listed and John W. Clifft I assume passed away between 1910 and 1920. I am looking for John's Cemetary Listing.
I had lost him after 1900 and recently found he was living with his next to youngest son in Gibson in 1910. I had assumed he was buried somewhere in Decatur County but now believe he may be in Gibson County. In the 1930 census Churchville Gray and Francis are living in Tangipohoa Louisiana and Churchville passed away June 19th 1954 Orleans Parish La.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I know Sarah came to U.S. around 1882 and lived in Humboldt TN. She shows up in 1900 Census and lived with her son James. It shows she is a widow. Her sons Daniel, Terrence and Anthony (my ggrandfather) also lived in Humboldt Tn. After the 1900 census I can't find her. Does anyone have any info on Sarah and Michael? When and where they died? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Debbie

John W Bowen, Gibson Co, Tennessee 1870

I believe the John Bowen listed in 1870 Gibson Co, Tenn census was a brother to my gr-grandfather, Thomas George Bowen, b 1825 Rutherford Co, TN; died 1882 Phelps Co, Mo.

John W Bowen mar Sarah Barkley in Rutherford Co, TN on 10 Oct 1846. They were in Cannon Co, TN 1850; John & Sarah were listed between Elizabeth Barkley (believed to be Sarah's mother) and children, and Brinkley Lassiter and his wife, Mary Bowen (believed to be a sister of Thomas Bowen (1799-1862), John W. Bowen's father. Nearby was Absalom Bowen and some of his sons. Not sure how he relates, but kin, and possible older half brother to Thomas, b 1799.

In 1850 John 23 and Sarah Bowen 24 had two ch: Mary E. 3, & Thos H. 1.

In 1860 John 38 and Sarah Bowen 38 were in Coffee Co, TN: Mary was 12 & Thhomas 10; Additional ch were: William 8; Rebecca 6; Nancy 4; Julia 3. Also James, age 1 & James Sr 22. Not sure if James belonged to John or James, since any older male by the same name, even though not in direct line, might be called Sr.

In 1870 John 43 (?) was in Gibson Co, TN; wife Sallie 35;. Sallie was often a nickname for Sarah, but if she is the same person here, her age is off quite a bit. John's age in 1870 corresponds with 1850, but is off in 1860. But we all know how they messed up the ages.

Mary, Thomas, Wm, & Julia, with corresponding ages are still in the home; Rebecca and Nancy are not listed. (Married? Deceased? Living away from home?) Additional ch in 1870 are: John b ca 1860; Robt b ca 1864; James b ca 1866; Adda b ca 1866; & Jennie b ca 1868.

Would like to hear from any descendants of this family.

We know that Oliver's daughter Hattie married Phillip Snowden Pullig, the brother of William's 2nd wife, Florence Elizabeth Pullig, my ggmother. So is this a coincidence that two distant branches of Caldwell's intermarried or is this a case of kin marrying kin?
Any help would be appreciated.
Donna

Searching for Clay, Taylor, & Dollar families

I am researching the DOLLAR, TAYLOR and CLAY families

William C. Clay born 1814 in NC I found him listed on the 1850 Census of Gibson Co. TN married to a Parnelia (no maiden name given) born 1812 in TN. They had 6 children: Francis Clay b. 1836; Sarah Clay b. 1837; Mary Elizabeth Clay b. 1839; William H. Clay b. 1841; Albert Clay b. 1844; John Clay b. 1847.

I also found them in the World Family Tree Volume 2, however, Parnelia is listed there as Parmelia Ann (still no last name).

Francis Clay married John Marion Taylor. Sarah Clay married Will H. Hardy. Mary Elizabeth Clay married Joshua Marion Taylor and had Sarah Elizabeth EmmaTaylor b. 1863; Martha Alice “Mattie” Taylor b. 1866; and Betty Clay Taylor b. abt. 1868.

Martha Taylor is reported to be of Sioux Indian decent, however, I have not been able to get any documentation proving it. Martha Taylor married Thomas Payton Dollar and had Robbie Evert Dollar and John Marion Dollar. There were other siblings as well, but I haven’t found their names yet.

Thomas Payton Dollar and Martha Taylor are supposed to be on the Madison Co. 1870 Census, but I haven’t been able to view it yet.
Garrison DNA Project

We would like to announce a new DNA Project at familytreedna.com for the Garrison Families in and around Gibson County. The Project is set up for Moses Garrison b.1737 d.AFT1820. Although Moses never lived in Gibson Co., his son Samuel b.1760 d.1846 and many of his children migrated to Gibson and Obion Counties as early as the 1830's. Many of his descendants prosper there today. Known children of Samuel are Obadiah 1794, John 1799 (first Postmaster of Mason Hall when it had one), James 1800, Moses Franklin 1802, Mary 1809, Susanna 1811, Jefferson 1812 and Joel 1822. There are many descending children in and around Mason Hall, Kenton, etc... .

There are numerous Maternal Lines associated with the Garrisons in Gibson and surrounding Counties. We will name a few and please forgive us if we don't list all, there are so many: Hollomon, Finch, Tilghman, Green, Bethell, McCutcheon, Cowsert, Scates, Carr, Casey, Davie, Marsh, White, Nichols, Ruteledge, Turner, Crain/Crane, Dodson, Worrell, Lanzer, Wray, Smith, Jones and Roney.

If you know of any Garrisons who are part of this family or have reason to believe they may be please let them know of this DNA Project and post a response.

We also have a Garrison and Allied Families Research Group in addition to the DNA Project where we are researching this Line. If any of the Maternal Lines listed above would contact us, we would be most appreciative to hear from them. We have learned that in many instances, the Maternal Line may have more information in the study of an individual than the Paternal Line.

Thanks So Much For Your Help,
Les and Harold Dean Garrison

Bells Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Chruch

I am doing extensive research on Bells Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Cemetery, Gibson County, TN, and civil district 8. I am willing to share any information, and hope to find more.

Many of the elder members have been very informative. The Church was organized in 1875 has a very interesting history. It is said the members are 1 of 2 things, family or foreigner. I have always heard that most of the people buried there, could be connected through family or marriage. My research is based on that concept, and I have concluded that it is a fairly reasonable statement.

I will be the 7th generation of 14 Direct ancestors

2 parents
2 grandparents
2 G-Grandparents
4 GG-Grandparents
3 GGG-Grandparents
1 GGGG-Grandmother

not to mention the endless number of cousins, aunts and uncles, etc.

The church burned in 1979, and most records were lost. Additionally, as with any cemetery, many never had headstones, and some of the older stone are long gone. I have been able to identify several that are buried there, without a stone. Would love to find more!

My goal is to provide the church with as much information that I can gather regarding each individual buried there, including their extended family.

Anyone connected to or interested in Bells Chapel and willing to share information, please contact me.

Mark Owens
markowen@bellsouth.net
McKelvy & Barnes families..Gibson Co Tennessee

Is anyone familiar with Milton B. Barnes who married Sarah Elizabeth McKelvy in 1879 in Gibson county Tennessee?
In the 1880 Gibson county Tennessee census their household includes the following:
Jack T. Barnes.....brother
John C. McKelroy....Father-in-Law
Francis L. McKelroy....son
Cora McKelroy....Daughter
John H. McKelroy...son
I believe that the name McKelroy is incorrect and it should be McKelvy since the Gibson county marriage records lists Sarah Elizabeth McKelvy as marrying M. B. Barnes in 1879.
I also believe the Cora McKelroy (McKelvy) is one of my great great grandmothers that I have been trying to locate.
If anyone recognizes any of these names, then please e-mail me at southerncross972@msn.com

Thanks

David

My family lived in the area where these 3 counties meet and I find information in all 3 counties of my family. Both cemeteries were in existence in the mid 1940's. My great grandparents' death certificates states they are buried at these cemeteries but my searches have turned up nothing. Varney Jines was buried at Dunagan and Cynthia Jines was buried at Climer. If anyone has any information on either of these cemeteries please contact me.

Hi:

My great grandparents were John J and Sarah C. Rose McCoy.
They were both born in Wilkes County North Carolina.
They married in Scott County Virginia. All their children were born in Virginia. They came to Texas about 1902.
I found them living in Montgomery County Arkansas in 1910.
I believe this is the same John J. McCoy listed on the Rootsweb Cemetery listing as being buried in Gibson County TN in 1914. As on the 1910 census one of his grand daughters is listed with them saying she was born in TN. One of the McCoy relatives did move to TN. Rootsweb gives the volume and page number of this cemetery listing. I would like to know if anyone can tell me if there are any cemetery burials online I could look at to see if Sarah might be buried next to him and also if I could view this information from this book online. Wouldn't mind hearing from any descendants if any still live in this county and would like to communicate with me.

Thanks,
Patricia Ruskauff

Could some kind soul please check any listings of wills or probate files for Gibson County, TN for John TROUT died 16 Jan 1858? I anticipate his wife as being listed as "Susan" (actually Susannah M. GOODBY). While John TROUT would be my primary interest, any entries for his father Jacob TROUT, Sr. (died after 1840) and his brother Joseph TROUT (died after 1860) would also be most welcome. If there are entries, I will write the Courthouse for copies of the wills and related materials.

Thank you in advance for your kindness!

Craig H. Trout
Loudoun County, VA

Just found a note in my deceased uncle's wallet listing our Griffis family living near Roberson fork. Brothers John, Pleasant and William were ref'd with dates 1730 to 1806.
Does anyone have any inf. on them? I think this area was District 13, Gibson county. I have traced this family to 1811 - William H., his son, John Wesley (Lincoln Co.), his son, John Rastus, and his son (my dad) Billie Warren Griffis. William H was listed in the 1850 census records as Griffith living in Lincoln Co. and in 1860 living in McNary Co.

I'm very new to genealogy, so please bear with me. I'm trying to find information on my GGrandfather, Christopher Columbus Bell. His wife's name was Nader ?. I don't know how many children they had, although I do know they had a son Mack Millan Bell, my grandfather. Mack married Margie Mathis, lived in Trenton, TN and had 2 children, Michael Gene and Margie Faye. I think Christopher died in Missouri, but also think he may have been born in TN. Just from family stories. I can't find anything on Christopher's parents, although I think they came from NC. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

But they also lived around McNairy, Gibson, Chester and Henderson Counties. His parents were George W. and Talisa Elizabeth (Hopper) Williamson. I cannot find him on any census. The only record I have of him is a listing on his father's Civil War Pension Applicatn. He is listed on there with his siblings. I have been told by several family members that he went into the mountains one day and was never heard from again. If anyone has any information about him, I would appreciate hearing from you.
Can anyone help me find out what happened to Ellen (Carlton)Taylor ~ b. 1853. 3rd wife of Vinson (VML) Taylor. Parents were Crawford and Martha (Harris) Carlton. VML died prior to 1888 and Ellen probably remarried. I have been unable to find any record of either Ellen or Vinson being buried in Gibson Co, but have no reason to believe they didn't live there until 1888+/-

1927 Senior Class - Peabody High

Hi,

My mother found this old framed photograph (I believe while visiting my dad's people in eastern OK). It is the SENIOR CLASS of 1927 of PEABODY HIGH. In the lower left corner it has "Gardner Fulton KY" which made me think it was from Fulton Co, KY but on the back it has "Trenton Furniture Co. - TRENTON, TENN." Either way, it is a beautiful photo collage of the seniors with an inset of the school building. I would be glad to scan the PHOTO of anyone's ancestor or relative and/or the entire photo. (My mother suggested I sell it on eBay, but I think eventually if Gibson Co. has a historical museum that I'll send it to them...) I put the names in alphabetical order. They are:

Aubrey ANDERSON
Lyda ANDERSON
Ann ANTHOY
Lillian BANKS
Bessie Lou BETTIS
Mary BURRESS
Virgina BURROW
Mary Lou COLE
Dayle CUNNINGHAM
Roxie DAVISON
Evelyn FISHER
Robert HICKS
Janie Katherine HUEY
Martha HUNT
Aaron JACKSON
Eldon JACKON
Mary KLOPP
Cary LEWIS
Ruby MATTHEW
James MOORE
Robert E. PARTK
Edith PARTEE
Nat REINEY
Mary Alice ROBERTSON
Frank ROGERS
Aubrey SMITH
Lillian SMITH
Velma Lou SMITH
Mary Willie STUART
Jeanette SWAIN
Robert TYREE
Imena WALKER

The Superintendent was B.L. HASSEL and the teachers were:

Mrs. Page PRIN
Mr. HANCOCK
Miss. TUCKER
Miss. SNYDER
Mr. BRIDGES

Their pictures are included as well.

Hope this helps somebody!
--Cheri

P.S. My guess is that the photographer must have been named GARDNER and that he was from FULTON, KY... ;o)
John Martin Wilkes/Washington Lafayette and Jane Crockett Wilkes/Anna Mae West

My grandmother, Frances Elois Wilkes Beard, was the daughter of
John Martin Wilkes unknown
and Anna May West b. 14 Mar 1885 in TN and d. 20 Feb. 1967, Columbus, MS at my grandmother's home.
My grandmother had a brother John and a sister Eunice that I remember. She was from the Dyer or Dyersburg, TN area.

John Martin Wilkes was most likely the grandson of
Washington Lafayette Jefferson Wilkes--b.28 Aug 1824 in TN d:18 Jun 1887 in TN.
and
Jane Crockett Love--b.28 Dec 1826 in TN and d. 22 Apr 1885 in TN. They were married in 1844. Thier other children were

1845-1928 John Love Wilkes
1847-1910 Mary K Wilkes
1850-1921 Susan A Wilkes
1853-1921 Ella Jane Wilkes
1856-1930 William L Wilkes
1869-1947 Sallie Bett Wilkes
John Martin Wilkes

I am thinking that John Martin is the son of one of the children of Washington and Jane Wilkes because I have reason to believe (but not confirm) that he was born in the 1880's, past childbearing age for Jane. He and Anna Mae's first child was born in 1907, Eunice, then John in 1914 and my grandmother in 1918.
Either Eunice or John had a daughter named Wilma who was possibly born in the 1940's.

I am trying to trace this branch of Wilkes, as well as Anna Mae West's relatives. Can anyone link me up with sources? Thanks in advance.

John Osborne(1808-1865) ran the hotel, that was located at the crossing of the M&O tracks. He also laid out one of the early lot additions in Humboldt. There is a story of Osborne shooting an Eadleman out in front of his hotelin the summer of 1865. He died in late 1865 and so did his daughter that was married to J.L. McGee. But what is strange, not long after this all happened, Osborne's wife(E.E. Osborne) and family packed up and left Humboldt. The writer of the article about the shooting thought they went to Missouri, but wasn't sure. (Note: In early Humboldtians writings, it was always said that John Osborne wasn't very well liked.) If any one is a decendent of Osborne or J.L. McGee please contact me.

I have just learned that my great, great grandmother was likely Phoebe (Fiba, Pheba, Phoeba?) HAMILTON of Humbolt, Gibson Co., TN and born about 1816. She was married on September 13, 1832 to Sanders GREEN who was born June 26, 1814 in Wake Co., NC, to Needham and China WOODWARD GREEN and they moved with their family to Carroll Co., TN when Sanders was a young boy. Sanders and Phoebe live in McLemoresville, Carroll Co., TN near the college where they raised 9 or 10 children before the Civil War. Does anyone know about the HAMILTONs of Humbolt, TN?
I am searching for many information on Levi Bradford son of Harris Bradford. Broen about 1806 Tennessee.
He was in the the 1840 census of Gibson County. In that census his Family consisted of a wife unknown,4 daughters and 3 sons.

In the 1850 census I find Levi Bradford and Nancy Bradford, one of his daugters, living with Levi's sister Mary Bradfors and her husband Daniel Crafton. Two farms over I find an other daughter Amanda Bradford living with another sister of Levi, Frances and her husband Alexander Vaungh.

In the 1860 Census of Gibson county I find Levi still living with his widowed sister Mary Bradford Crafton. Both Nancy and Amanda had married by this time.

Amanda Bradford married William J Jordan, br ca 1825 to Zachariah Jordan and Tabitha Stokes. They are in the 1860 census of Henderson county. Nancy had married Lafayette Greer or Green.

I find Levi Bradford in the 1870 census of Henderson County living next door to William J Jordan and Amanda Bradford Jordan.

I also found where Levi served as Bondsman to several marriages in Gibson County, one of the was the marriage between James C Bradford and Mary Williams in 1844.

Who was Levi's wife? Who were there children? When and Where thwey married?

I would appreciate any help!!

Melvin Jordan

I have a John E Gleason married to Henrietta Vaden on July 14, 1859 in Gibson County, TN. Henrietta is the daughter of D D Vaden and Mickey (Micha) Austin Blankenship (my wife's g-g-g-grandparents)

I found a J. E. and Henrietta Gleson with baby Patrick (1 month old) in the 1860 census of Gibson Co., TN. I am assuming this is the same couple, but need clarification.

I have not been able to find anything else on them as a couple. I have found a John Gleason buried in the Memphis National Cemetery (BURIED AT: SECTION B SITE 379). He enlisted on Oct 1, 1863 and served in the Tr. Fr. 3rd TN Infantry, company F. I do not know if this is the same Gleason.

I would be interested in information on this family.

Charlie Vines
I'm researching the Spain and Watson families in Gibson County. I know that many of the family members are buried in Double Springs Cumberland Presbytarian Church cemetary but I haven't been able to find any information about the cemetary or family members on the Gibson County site. Does anyone have information on the location of this cemetary? or any other related information on the Spain and Watson families?

Eliza McMurray b1860 m in 1892 Wm H January b 1853

Does anyone know anything about her parents or family?
This is the last great-grandmother on both sides of our family that I haven't been able to learn anything about. I hope someone out there can help.

Elizabeth E. or Eliza McMurray b 1860 in TN
married William Hardeman January b 1853 in Gibson Co., TN.
She was about 32 when they married, and he was 40. I've found no indication that she had been married before, so this is probably her maiden name.

I've found them on the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census, but can't find them on the 1930 census. I haven't been able to find her in any cemetery listing.

I have looked and looked at the 1870 and 1880 census, but can't find a clue. Some of the images are really bad, and I suspect that the name is not indexed correctly. In fact, the last straw was looking through 3,390 names and locations today for McMur*.

In [1870 Gibson Co TN Dist 7, p63 (342b)] looks like it could be Mcmury, but the father’s given name is illegible.	It is the same first name as the 6-year-old son. Seipreum? Leipreum? Maybe it is Lipscum, as Genweb has.

The others in the family are:
Eugenia C. 43,
Jimmie W. 15,
Laura 12,
Eliza 10, and
L ?? 6.

Thank you for wading through this long message this far,
Ann Martin
