David Clinton Dickey was my Great-Great Gradfather. He was born Jan. 30, 1827 in Gibson County, Tennessee. He served in the war in the Confederate Army and enlisted in Benton County. He was in the Fifth Tennessee Infantry, Co. M. I was told by my grandfather, Joseph Randolph Dickey, Sr., that his grandfather, Dr. D.C.Dickey, was taken as a prisoner of war and was pressed into service tending the injured Yankees. During that time he was hoarding pain killing medications and hiding them under the floorboards of his holding cell (actually a small cabin room, a privilege afforded him as a physician aiding the wounded). Under the same floor he kept a stocking which he filled with dirt that fell between the floorboards. When he had collected enough dirt and gravel to fill the stocking to make it heavy enough to use as a weapon, he struck one of his captors and changed into his (Union)uniform then made his getaway with the painkillers !!!! He was almost shot by Confederate troops as he made his way to the nearest camp, yelling "Don't shoot boys, I'm one of you" !! I am trying to find information as to where he was prisoner and other information about his service to the Confederacy. I believe he returned to Benton County where he lived out the rest of his days. In my very miniscule research, I located the 1900 Benton County Census to find that my then 26 year old great grandfather, Foster Matthews Dickey, and his wife (my great grandmother) Della, were living with his parents, David Clinton Dickey and his wife Ann, along with their children, Edna, Louise and Jack. This was before my grandfather was born. I knew my Great Aunt Edna and Uncle Jack. This is the first post I have ever made and I sincerely hope I have not broken nine of the ten "commandments", so forgive me for being a rookie. I hope this information has been of help and I will post more as I learn new information. I would also appreciate anything you might find. Are you a relative ???
