LOOKING FOR INFO ON HOUSTON/HOUSTIN ANCESTORS

Hello, After many years, I have finally got a lead on the allusive Houston family..I hope!! I am looking for info on Edgar Sharp Houston. I recently found his funeral home death record that stated he was born in Dyersburg TN on July 13,1916. It listed his father's name as Euie Houston & mother Maggie Peters. I knew that Edgar's father died soon after he was born, and he was raised by his grandparents here in KY. I recently found that there was a Ewing Houstin that died August 20, 1916 in Dyer Co & is buried at Fairview Cemetery in Newbern. Thanks to some kind soul that has the cemetery listed online, with pics I might add, I found Ewing's tombstone..It has his name listed as Galon Ewen Houston..Does anyone know anything about this man or family? Online where I found record of his death, it said he was the son of Mat Houstin..I am assuming Mat as being his father..I live in KY, and I can't find any info on Dyer Co Tn here..I assume maybe Maggie & Ewing/Ewen got married there in Dyer Co TN as well. Does anyone know where I can lookup marriage license for back in early 1900s? I have spent years searching for this family...I really feel I am getting hot for once..When I go to the Dyer Co TN website, it does not really have marriage records, birth records, censuses, etc..

I would muchly appreciate any help anyone can give me..Are there any Houston descendants out there?? I sure hope so..Where would I have to go to do lookups on marriage records or birth records? I just know this Ewing/Ewen Houston/Houstin has to be my Edgar Sharp Houston's father..Can anyone help me prove that??

Thanks muchly,
Joan Morris

Death in Dyer co tennessee

I have been told that my uncle, John Hubbard Grove married a woman in Iowa following the death of his first wife in 1900. He was widowed with three children and married a woman from the Seventh Day Adventist Church. I understand that they moved to Cottonwood where the children and the new wife contracted yellow fever. The children recovered but the wife died. Since he married for the third time in early 1905, I would assume that the death was between November of 1900 and the middle of 1905. Can someone check death or cemetery records for me to look for a young woman with the Grove surname?

I have death certificate for my grgr grandmother, Mozella/Mosella Manley Hensley and it has her parents as John Manley (which I know her was a physician/minister in Dyer Co. b. 1824 d. 1872 buried Fairview Cemetery, Newbern, Dyer Co. TN as are other family including Mozella and her husband) and has her mother as Margaret Mengel (is hard to make out last 2 letters) I know that Margaret married 2nd a William Stone and had several more children. They were in the 1880 census but she was deceased by 1900 because he is widowed with his daughter living in house. Have yet to find anything on her death or where she is buried. All census' say she was born in TN so wondered if any Mengel's lived in Dyer Co. in 1800s and if so, are any descendants still there that could possibly help me. This has me stumped because I can find nothing.
Appreciate any help I can get. (because John Manley was a minister, would think there would be a family bible with records in it)
Mary

This Robert Cothran was born Apr 1878 in Tennessee so this fits with the age of my grandmother Martha Elizabeth Campbell who was born in Tennessee in 1878.

I need help finding more about this family so I can find if he really is my grandfather. He died in 1909 just before my father was born so my father never knew him.

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

Martha Bell
in Florida
Butlers In Dyer County

It appears that our Williamson / Weakley / Gibson County Butlers are, somehow, connected to a family of Butlers from Dyer County.

John Bedford Butler (1825 TN - 1862 TN) and his wife Martha Minerva Carroll are buried in Shiloh General Baptist Church Cemetery in Northern Gibson County, Tennessee. John Bedford Butler is the son of John Butler (1790 NC - 1855 TN) and Caroline M Pounds (of Putnam County, Georgia).

Buried next to them are James Thomas Butler (II) and his parents Thomas Henry Butler and Myrlie Hampton Butler. The death certificate for Thomas Henry Butler says that his parents were James Thomas Butler and Maud Hunt, both born in Tennessee.

I believe I have found James Thomas Butler and wife Maud in the Dyer County census 1900 and 1910. Since both were born after 1880, I am unable to identify their parents. I have not found dates or places of death for them, so have been unable to order death certificates.

Can anyone give me more information regarding these Butlers or Hunts? I have pieced together a little information from death certificates and census pages. That information is below.

Name:	Thomas Henry Butler nmf
----------------------------------------
Birth Date:	15 Apr 1901
Birth Place:	(DC) Tennessee
Death Date:	3 Sep 1972 Age: 71
Death Place:	(DC) Milan, Gibson Co., Tenn.
Death Memo:	Milan Hospital
Burial Date:	5 Sep 1972 Age: 71
Burial Place:	(DC) Bradford, Gibson Co., Tenn.
Burial Memo:	Shiloh Cemtery
Residence Date:	9 Apr 1930 Age: 28
Residence Place: District 22, Gibson Co., Tenn
Residence Memo:	(Mulberry Road) 1920 Gibson Co.
Hodges Chapel burial for John Bennett Jones

Hello. I am searching for a cemetery named Hodges Chapel. That is where my gg grandfather is suppose to be buried if I go by death certificate, undertaker was HH Hudson in Dyersburg, but he lived in Tiptonville. His name is John Bennett Jones but he mainly went by Bennett Jones. I am confused because this looks like its his death certificate and names look right, he is listed as colored, but he was caucasion.

I am looking for any info on my great-great-grandfather, William W. Moore, born Jan. 22, 1858, and died in December, 1914 in Hickman, KY. I am pretty sure he lived in Dyer County, as one of his sons, James Thomas Moore, my great-grandfather, lived in Dyer County for a good while when he was a kid. He was born in Nov, 1883. William had two wives, the first was a full blooded Cherokee Indian, and the second was named Jeanie or Jennie. William had two other sons, a John Moore and Ewell Moore. I am getting stuck on this particular branch of my family tree and I would appreciate any info! Thanks in advance!

I am looking for a man named Stanley Robertson. He is in his 60's and he used to live in Henderson Co. Tenn. His Father owned a feed mill there. I think he might be my dad, or might know who is my dad. I was born on march 1st, 1960. My mother was Lou Nell Tulley, who was 17 years old at the time of my birth. I was adopted 4 months after my birth, and have lived most of my life in the state of New York. My birth mother does not wish to see me, so I am hoping that my birth father will . No ulterior motives, just want to know him. Adopted family is long dead, and wish my 9 year old son Daniel could have a grandpa to talk to on the phone. My birth mom named me Robin Lynn Tulley, but my name now is jackie spencer. If you know anything, it would mean more to me than you could possibly know. Thank You.

I am looking for any information about my grandfather, Robert Floyd Cothran. I know he died about 1909 in Dyer county, probably in Lenox and is supposed to be buried in McCulloughs Chapel Cemetary but that is all I know about him. My grandmother was Martha Elisabeth Campbell. Her first husband was a McDaniel. Any help I can get about will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Martha Cothran Bell
My maternal grandmother was Ona Pate Hallum. Am trying to go back as far as possible on her side. Have following information; Ona was daughter of William H. Pate and Susan Russell; William Pate was son of George M. Pate and Mary C. Phillips. Ona married Jim Hallum but in 1920 Census, Tennessee they are listed as Ola Holms and James Holms. Most of above were in Tennessee but think there may be some info in North Carolina and Missouri. Any help will be appreciated. My faternal grandmother was a Lumley so any help there would be good also. Thanks.

"Mattie" McClain, born in 1871 in Lauderdale Co., AL on Jan 21, 1891 in Lauderdale Co., AL. They moved to Dyer Co., TN sometime between 1904 and 1909. They lived there the rest of their lives and are buried in Hurricane Hill Cemetery.
Martha McClain was the daughter of James Nelson "Nelson" McClain, born in 1841 in Lauderdale Co., Al He was the son of William Nelson "Nelson" McClain, born in 1816 in TN and Mary Brewer.
I believe that William Nelson McClain was the brother of my gr, gr, grandfather, John/James McClain, born in 1812 in TN. Their father was a James McClain.
I am trying to find information on Martha McClain and James Carson's families. Siblings, parents, children, extended family etc. and I would appreciate any help.
Thanks
Charlotte McClain Christensen

HAYNES/MCCLAIN'S IN DYER CO., TN

Hi;
I would very much like to get in touch with anyone doing research on the McClain and/or Haynes families from Dyer Co., TN.
John and Shorty McClain originally came from around Hardin Co., TN , then moved to Lauderdale Co., AL and then some of their children came back to Hardin and some to Dyer Co.
Two sons of John And Shorty McClain, settled in TN about 1890, John Wilson McClain settled in Hardin Co., and his younger brother, Charles Alexander "Charlie" McClain settled in Dyer Co.
John Wilson McClain was married to Martha Elizabeth "Mattie" Rayburn in 1880 in Lauderdale Co., AL.
They had a son named Howell Andrew "Hal" McClain. He was born in 1877 in Lauderdale Co.,
Howell moved to Dyer Co., sometime between 1890 and 1900. He married Johnnie Everett on Dec 25, 1907 in Dyer Co. I believe she was from Dyer Co. or living there. However, they are living together as man and wife on the 1900 census in Dyer Co., and have one child. So I guess the marriage came later on.
Howell and Johnnie McClain had six children
Bertha, who died as an child
Girtie Louise
Chester G., who died as an infant
Charles Lonnie "Charlie"
Leonard
Howell and Johnnie divorced around 1927 and Howell remarried to my grandmother, Ruby Leona Martin. They had one son, Louis, who is my father.
Charles Lonnis McClain married Garland Geneva "Geneva" Wilson March 11, 1942 in Dyer Co.
They had 4 children, one of which was a daughter, Patsy Mae "Pat" McClain. She married a Haynes.
Patsy was my first cousin. Her father, Charlie, and my father, Louis, were half brothers. We only found each other through genealogy about 4 years ago. It is kind of a long story.
Patsy passed away this past March and I am trying to finish the genealogy on our McClain/Haynes family tree that we started. It was very important to her to find all her family.
As with most families she was the only one in her family interested in genealogy and I am the only one in my family interested in it. So I have no one to help me to find information on her Haynes family. I have other Haynes family connected to my mother's side in Il and MO and would like to find out also if they are related to each other. I would appreciate any help on this.
My cousin still has family living so I don't want to put antyhing on-line about them. So, if anyone has anything they can help me with, please e-mail me at my home address below. I would appreciate any help.
This is my home e-mail address;
ly68@charter.net
Thanks a lot.
Charlotte McClain Christensen

MCCLAIN'S AND SCOTT'S IN HARDIN/DYER CO., TN

Hi;
I would very much like to get in touch with anyone doing research on the McClain and Scott families from Hardin/Dyer Co., TN. John and Shorty McClain originally came from around Hardin Co., TN , then went to Lauderdale Co., AL and then some of their children came back to Hardin and some to Dyer Co.
Martha Elizabeth "Mattie" Rayburn was married to John Wilson McClain in Lauderdale Co., AL in 1880. They moved to Hardin Co., TN around 1890. They are on the 1900 census there. (The older pair of John and Mattie McClain) .
The Scott family also came to Hardin Co., TN from Lauderdale Co., AL about the same time as the McClain family.
John McClain died sometime between 1900 and 1910 and Mattie remarried to a "Scott". I don't know his first name. I don't know if they married in Hardin Co. or Dyer Co. or Mississippi Co., AR. Mattie is living in Mississippi Co., AR on the 1910 census with her children and her last name is Scott.
I would appreciate any help on finding out who the "Scott" was that she married.

Thanks a lot.
Charlotte McClain Christensen

Dyers in LaRue and Hardin Co. KY

Is anyone familiar with Daniel W. Dyer, born in Virginia in 1819 and living in LaRue County Kentucky from 1850 until the end of his life. His wife was Hannah Booher. In the 1850 Census there is a John Dyer living in Hardin Co. with his wife Elvira (b. 1828 in Kentucky) and 2 year old son, James L. Dyer. John was born in Virginia in 1824. After this John disappears from census records. James L. Dyer turns up in 1870 working as a cabinet maker in Daniel W.'s LaRue county store. That same year, an Elvira (b. 1828 in Kentucky) is living in either Hardin or LaRue county as the wife of James A. Dyer (b. 1840 in Tennessee). One of their sons was Alfred Franklin Dyer.

I have 2 questions: Are John Dyer and Daniel W. Dyer brothers? I have no proof, but I believe they are. Are these Elviras the same woman? I am convinced that they are.

Is anyone else studying the Dyers of LaRue Co., KY? Does anyone know the connections between Daniel W., John, and the Dyers from Grainger Co., TN?

Any help would be appreciated.

Area known as Blue Grass?

Was there an area in Dyer County known as Blue Grass in the early 1900's? The name is mentioned as the birthplace for several family members in personal records, but I can’t find any current reference to the name.

The cemetery section on the Dyer County GenWeb page includes a transcription for the Chic (aka Blue Grass) Cemetery. I'm curious if this could be the area they hailed from.

I also stumbled across a legal document in which the State of Arkansas took the State of Tennessee to court in 1940 over a formation on the banks of the Mississippi River known as Blue Grass Towhead. This area seems to coincide with the above-mentioned cemetery.

Are any local history buffs lurking around? I would greatly appreciate any information provided.

Thank you.

Wondering if the cemetery was much larger and if so how far did it reach? Also was there a cemetery there in the same area for a family named Bruce? My Binkley's are buried in Palestine and I was told my GG grandfather is buried in a Bruce family cemetery. just down the road but I cannot find it. MyGg died about 1908 and Palestine cemetery was established in 1840. He also help start the church there in 1880's or 90's , so I wonder why he would be buried in a different area, unless the Bruce cem. connects to the Palestine cemetery. Sure hope somebody knows something about the history of that area and the families--Binkley, Cleek,Swanner,Pulley,Bailey and more. ps- I heard that Curry's funeral home was first located in the same building in dyersburg that now houses General Appliance and furniture.

Does anyone have access to cemetery transcriptions in Dyer County? I am looking for Fannie Rives Hicks, who may have died about 1896 or 1897.

Fannie's husband's name was Arlando Hicks. I have located Arlando's first wife, Georgeanne Nelson Hicks, in Chic Cemetery, but can't find Fannie. I've been through the Dyer County GenWeb site cemetery section, but don't know of any other online transcriptions.

I'm hoping a local history or genealogy society may have compiled a book of cemetery transcriptions. I would greatly appreciate a lookup. Thank you! :-)

calling all descendants of Rawley or Raleigh Madding (1789-1855)

Hello Madding/Roberson cousins,
The grave marker of Rawley Madding (1785-1855) was recently discovered in an overgrown, abandoned cemetery in the Bailey Springs area near Florence, Alabama. Rawley was born in Pittsylvania Co. VA, served in the War of 1812 and moved to Maury Co. in the 1820s where he lived until his death. He had 19 living children at the time of his death through marriages to Sally Mays and Sally Bridgeman. Many of these children ended up in N. AL, W. TN and W. KY including my own 3rd grandmother Anne T. Madding Roberson (wife of Wm. "Billy" Roberson) and many descendants lived (or still live) in the Obion Chapel area between Troy and Hornbeak, with other groups in Lake & Dyer Co., Fulton Co. KY etc... A young Eagle Scout candidate, Davis Faulkner and his family, friends etc.. in the Florence, AL area are cleaning up, refencing, marking and preserving the cemetery and are planning to hold a dedication ceremony this Memorial Day. They are also looking for funds to help in the restoration of the cemetery (particularly refencing). Please contact me if you are interested in this project. Attached is a photo of Rawley's marker (long thought to have been buried in Maury Co. in an unmarked grave). This is a great project and they have already obtained historic cemetery designation from the State of Alabama. Only about 4 graves are still marked in this cemetery after 160 or so hard years! Help preserve our ancestor's memory for future generations!
I have a small packet of info that I can snail mail if interested.
This link will also take you to my posted info at the rootsweb world connect project:
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=dajones&I11.x=...
Thanks, David Jones in Richmond, MI, 4th great grandson of Rawley and Sally Mays Madding
Arlando later married a woman named Jane Bradshaw (09 Jul 1897) in Dyer County, TN.

In the 1900 Census from Dyer County, there is a Fronie B.
