I have 3 Mockbees who served in this regiment:

JH Mockbee, Co. A
John and Thomas D. Mockbee, Co.
This Hogan family was missed in the 1860 Stewart Co. census, along with quite a few others. They lived on Cub Creek, District 2 in Stewart County, as evidenced by the 1860 tax list taken about the same time as the census.

I am trying to find records for a great aunt. She appears for the first time in the 1880 census in Dickson County TN, in the 11th civil district, she is listed as Olla E. Edwards and is 2 years old. She then appears again in the 1900 census, still living at home in Dickson County in the 13th civil district, but this time her name is recorded as Ollie L. Edwards 21 years old and single. Those are the only 2 records I can find for her. I have searched through marriage records and death records for the county but still nothing! Can some one please help???

I just saw your message. I'm the genealogist at the Stewart County Public Library in Dover, TN and have been doing research for some people on Charles Sikes. I haven't found much but his mother was Fannie Sykes and they are listed in the 1900 Stewart County census. She appears again in the 1910 census living with a young man named Fountain Green or Fount A Green and his wife in Henry County, TN. Fount or Fountain was a boarder in Fannie's home in 1900. I was puzzled as to why she was living with a former boarder instead of her son. Charles is living with his mother in 1900 and later shows up in Dickson County. The people I'm researching for found Fannie Sykes in an older 1880 census book described as a mulatto. I haven't came across any evidence of that fact, but that would explain her absence in early records. She doesn't appear in our 1880's census book. On Charles death record, the name of neither parent is listed which is fairly unusual. I can only guess they had some sort of falling out.

Hi Katherine

I just saw your reply now! :((

I think that Thomas and Scott had about 8 children, so it is difficult keeping everyone straight. I am a descendant of their son William, who was born in Puslinch County, Ontario, 1859. I think about 5 of the siblings were born in Scotland and emigrated here with Thomas and Scott.
I have been able to go one generation back and have the parents of both Thomas and Scott... but haven't been able to go further.
Have also been in touch with a descendant of John, another of their children. This connection that I have, is also connected to another of the sibling lines.
Would be great if we could fill in names! :)

WOULD LOVE to see a picture of Thomas and Scott, as well as Thomas' will. WOW!! How fantastic for you that out of all the family members, you have the original will!

Please contact me anytime:
debradickson780@gmail.com

Hmmm... this site was supposed to send me an alert when someone replied... but it never did. :( So, if you can contact me directly that might be more time efficient. :))

Hi!
Many thanks for your offer. I have several family members that fell off the planet there in Dickson County, TN. In keeping with your policy of one name per search, I guess I'll start with the only one that I have my hands on.

Ruth McCreary Ewell was the daughter of William and Betsey McCreary. Ruth married John Ewell in December of 1879 In Dickson County.

Ruth died at the age of 80 on 19 Mar 1930 in Dickson County, 5th Civil District. She was buried at Rock Church the next day.

I guess that what I need is (hopefully) an obituary or something to help peace this family together.

Many thanks for whatever help you may give!

Hello,

I just read your message/question regarding this cemetery. My mother is, (L.Bell). Yes, the cemetery is called Bellsburg Tenn. My mother is from Tenn. her parents are buried in this cemetery. This cemetery was named after the Bells, many many many... moons ago. My mother was just there with my siblings, to share this needed history with us. It was a site to behold. My mother tries to go back south every year, depending upon her health, to place flowers on her mother and other family member headstones.
My mother has shared the story with us regarding this cemetery, and why it is called Bellsburg Cemetery. Today is January 21, 2013, at 7:26pm. I don't know if you are still in the land of the living, but I have pictures of this cemetery, and names, therein. On my mother's side of the family, we have a geneologist. I have a hugh book with a massive amount of documentation and pictures. I am going to check my book for the listing of his name. I hope you get this message.

Milwaukee, WI

Melissa,

Danielsville Post Office is listed for the whole 1860 census of Dickson County. Enumerated by the Assistant Marshal M.F. Shelton,Danielsville P.O. So it would be difficult to determine from the 1860 census; if this was the the closest post office to the household of William Harris.
As there were 6 other post offices in Dickson County in 1860.

Try searching the U.S. Tax Assessment list for Tennessee. It's found on Ancestry.com. The database dates the list for "1862" Tennessee. But most of the taxes were paid in 1866. I think it would be difficult for a
Federal tax man to try to get the citizens of Dickson Co. to pay taxes in
1862!

This is what my great grandfather, David Sylvester Adams, wrote about Jane Waynick Patterson (his great aunt)and her husband, Martin Van Buren Patterson, in 1933:

"Jane Waynick, youngest child of George and Betsy Waynick married Martin Van Buren Patterson of Houston Co. Children born of this union were:
Joseph Hudson, now living at Waverly Tenn
Wilbert Whitton – now living near the old house on Williamson
Leonard – died in his youth – a splendid boy
Andrew Van Buren (Boonie) living at the old home place
Lanna Jane – married Moss Waynick – dead
Minnie – married Lewis Ellis
Martin Luther married Lola Bull	living near the old home
It would be hard to tell which was the most devout Christian – Martin Patterson or his wife. On several occasions the writer has heard Aunt Jane and Aunt Cinda [Lucinda Waynick Tatom, wife of Lorenzo Dow Tatom] both praying in public at the same time, and it seemed the hair would rise on my head. Neither was educated, nor had any experience in public speaking but they both could talk to God – and talk eloquently. Their faces seemed to take on a holy radiance not of this world, and all who listened, believed that God had drawn near and was listening. Two of the most powerful people I have ever heard in prayer. In their day and generation, people believed in God – honestly and reverently. Now they believe in 3 things – and 3 only: Money, whiskey and women – the more dissolute the better.
“God is not slack concerning His promise as some men count slackness,” so saith the Book.
Martin Van Buren Patterson was the first Freemason I ever knew, and it was my privilege to attend his funeral – the first Masonic funeral I ever witnessed and it made a very solemn and lasting impression on my mind.
Uncle Martin was brought up by very pious, godly parents: Uncle Bobby and Aunt Susi as they were known to their friends and neighbors. M. V. Patterson was a powerful man physically, but unfortunately dropsy took him from his devoted wife and seven children, just when he was in the prime of his life. About 41, I think.
In his last illness, when all hope had been abandoned Aunt Jane asked him if he wanted anything. He said “yes. I want to get up and hold prayer with my family one more time.” (He always had family prayer before retiring.) Aunt Jane told him he could not get up – that he was too sick, but suggested that he might hold prayer while in bed. To this he finally agreed and asked her to call in the children.
All came in, from Joseph the eldest to Martin Luther, the baby – a rosy cheeked, curly haired toddler with eyes as blue as summer skies.
That must have been a heart rending scene as these seven precious ones kneeled around their father’s death bed to hear him pray for them for the last time on earth.

And how wonderfully this father could call on God – how fervently he beseeched the God of heaven to care for his loved ones who must soon be left a widow and orphans.
Did God hear and answer the dying prayer of this pious father? He most assuredly did. All these children (except Leonard who died in his youth) lived to be grown and Aunt Jane lived to see them in the church, and not only that, but earnest, devout Christian men and women – always ready and willing any hour of the day or night to testify to the saving grace of a crucified Savior.
Soon after this last prayer service, and as the sun descended over the western hills, the spirit of Uncle Martin took its flight – back to the God that gave it. Truly it could have been said of him as King David said of Abner “A prince and a great man hath fallen in Israel today.”
Aunt Jane lived many years afterward but never re-married.
Rev. J. J. Rye preached her funeral at the home and delivered a very beautiful sermon."
I spent a good while yesterday digging around and I think I've solved the Boaz mystery. I agree that Joel Boaz' wife was Susan Dillehay. J.J. Patterson was living with Joel and Susan Boaz' son, James L. Boaz, and his wife, Mollie S. Russell Boaz, when he died.

James and Mollie (aka Mary Susan) married in January, 1896, in Houston County. Mollie Russell was the daughter of Rebecca Patterson Russell, J.J.s other sister. So I think J. J. Patterson was Mollie's uncle, not James'.

I also found a death certificate for Rebecca Patterson Russell. It lists her mother as Susie Reynolds, just like J.J.'s, so I think we are safe with the "Reynolds" conclusion.

There are mutliple marriages, and it gets complicated, but here is my working theory. The "Webster" part is largely unsubstantiated, though.

Susie Reynolds married a man named Webster and had a daughter, Olive C. Webster. In the 1850 census, Olive's birthplace is listed as Kentucky, so I'm wondering if the Reynolds-Webster marriage was in Kentucky. I haven't found any proof of that marriage yet, though. It would have been around 1830.

In the meantime, Robert Patterson also married (possibly Rachel Morrison) and had several children including Benjamin F. and Nancy Patterson.

Then, Susie (Reynolds) Webster marries Robert Patterson in August, 1837 (marriage license found)and together they have 5 children - Martin VB, Susan, J. J., Rebecca, and David. Olive would be their half-sister.

Then, just to confuse things further, Olive Webster marries a John T. Patterson (who might be Robert's son by his first wife, I'm not sure yet) in May, 1846. John T. must have died, because in the 1850 census Olive is living with Robert and Susie as Olive Patterson. Two other children by Robert's first wife, Benjamin and Nancy, are also in the household along with all 5 of Robert and Susie's children.

In October, 1853, Olive Patterson married William W. "Buck" Adams. I have always wanted to know who "Buck" Adams was (his name appears in my great-grandfather's writings and maps) so, thanks to you, now I know!

Merry Christmas to you as well.

Lori

Thanks so much for your diggin'. Yes, I believe this is the same R. Patterson. I am curious about Joseph J. sister, Susan having m. Joel Boaz. Ancestry shows Joel as having m. a Susn Dillehay not Patterson. Will need to check that out. I did learn that the nephew J. J. was living with in 1930 was the s/o J. J. and Susan Patterson's sister, Olive, although she may have had a different mother. Merry Christmas!

Your question about Susan's maiden name made me curious so I did a little more digging. There is a death certificate in Houston County in July, 1935, for Joseph J. Patterson that lists his parents as Robert Patterson and Susan Reynolds.

An Ancestry.com user (CheriCherry05)posted a story on her tree about Joseph's obituary and the fact that, at age 91, he was one of the last few living confederate soldiers in Houston County. She mentioned Joseph's sister, Susan Patterson, and her husband Joel Boaz and said that Joseph had been living with his nephew, James Boaz, before he died and could be found in that household in the 1930 census.

Do you think this is the same Robert Patterson family?

Sorry I don't know much about the Patterson family other than MVB. My line is the Waynicks.

I sort of thought Robert's wife was Susie Reynolds, too, but a lot of people on ancestry.com seem to think she was Susan Webster. Several list your great grandmother with the middle initial "W" too.

Thanks for getting back to me. I feel certain we are talking about the same cemetery. I was hoping someone would have a burial list for the cemetery. Doesn't seem like that might happen. I'm supposing a lot of my Wallace kin are there in those unmarked graves including Susan Patterson b. around 1840, a dau of Robert Patterson and Susan ? and sister to Martin Van Buren Patterson. I have question mark as to the maiden name of Robert's wife Susan. Had some information that she was a Reynolds but not sure about that. Have you come across these Pattersons? Susan Patterson Wallace was my great grandmother. I am uncertain when she died; apparently between 1880 and 1900 per census records. I live in Ohio; hope to get down there next summer. Thanks again.

I drove around that area in the summer of 2010, visiting cemeteries where I have relatives buried. I went to a Patterson cemetery, which I think is the one you're asking about. This is what I wrote in my notes:

"East side of Williamson Branch Road, not far south of Tatum Coleman Cemetery. Cemetery is not visible from Williamson Branch Road, although there is a large sign marking the turnoff."

This is in the Ellis Mills/Vanleer vicinity, and may actually be in Houston County.

The Tatum Coleman cemetery, where my great-grandfather David S. Adams is buried, is at the corner of Williamson Branch Road and Hayes Road, and the Patterson cemetery is a little further down Williamson Branch Road from there. It sits back from the road, is enclosed by a chain link fence, and is shaded by many large trees. It shares a driveway with a nearby (mobile?) home.

Two of my Waynick-Patterson relatives are buried there - Moss Waynick and wife Lanna Jane Patterson. Lanna Jane's parents were Jane Waynick and Martin Van Buren Patterson. The Waynick cemetery is also nearby, on Boaz Branch Road.

Try these approximate coordinates in Google Maps or another GPS:

Tatum-Coleman: 36.297574,-87.548059
Patterson: 36.296436,-87.546524
Waynick: 36.280252,-87.509837

I did not find any listings on county web sites or Find-a-Grave. If there is something specific that you are looking for there, I am occasionally in the area and I imagine there are other "Dickson Diggers" nearby, too.

Lori in Nashville

Re: RICHARDSON FAMILY

Hi Sheila-
My name is Rhonda. My grandfather was Arthur Richardson. Brother to Bertha Richardson Baggett. I've been doing a little research myself into the Richardson family history. The story regarding John W. Richardson goes something like this (at least this is what has been explained to me by family members): John W. Richardson was from Oklahoma (near Enid) He left home around the age of 16. Migrated up to Ohio or Indiana. Worked on a farm (maybe apple orchard) He then changed his name to John Richardson - after the family farm. He later worked as an employee of the railroad system. Ended up in Tennessee where he married Mary Jane Catherine Lyle. John and Mary Jane are buried in the Richardson family cemetery in Sylvia tennessee (also might be a Dickson address) I remember meeting Aunt Bertha as a very young child. I would love to connect with more Richardson family. Please feel free to contact me rs2house@hotmail.com
All the best,
Rhonda

Michal Farmer lists Dorcas Stone as a daughter of William Stone and Elizabeth Hardeman. Here's the information he has for her:

"Dorcas Stone, born circa 1775, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, died before 12 March 1803, married Bartholomew Smith, born circa 1763, will made 25 December 1849, proved October 1854, Dickson County, Tennessee. Bartholomew and Dorcas Smith had son, Mumford Smith. Bartholomew Smith married second, 12 March 1803, Davidson County, Tennessee, to Dorothy “Dolly” Everett, born circa 1777, daughter of John Everett and Ester Hardeman. Dorothy “Dolly” Everett was Dorcas Stone’s first cousin. [See #28, Dorothy “Dolly” Everett]."

Census records indicate my John Smith was born about 1803 in Tennessee. Bartholomew and Dolly were married March 12, 1803. If Dorcas died at about age 28 or younger, it's possible she died during childbirth. When was Mumford Smith born? Was John Smith Dorcas's son, instead of Dolly Smith's son - assuming, of course, he comes from this line in the first place?

Any help is appreciated.

Best,
Walter Jenny
Edmond OK

I have some info on Jasper Bissinger in my tree. My grandmother's Aunt, Dora Shelton was one of his wives. I have saved copies of the 1880, 1900, 1910 & 1920 Census reports as well as the marriage certificates to his three wives: Pauline Sullivan in 1887, Amanda Deal in 1889, and Dora Shelton in 1910. What information are you searching for?

Dear Malcolm,

I am also seeking Richard Williams who was born 1803/04 in Tennessee and married Hannah Elizabeth Lucinda Coates (usually it is Lucinda...and sometimes it is Coats, but this sounds like the same person). They lived in Lauderdale or Meridian, Mississippi and he died in the early 1850's. She went to Texas where son George, another son, and the later a daughter Elizabeth Smith lived. Richard is supposed to be buried in the Thaymes (spelling?)cemetery in Little Rock...MS?
Hope you will respond. It is hard to find Richard's origins.

I am researching my Great Grandfather, Charles S Sykes. He was listed as marrying Eula Wallace at the Dickson County Courthouse on 08 Dec 1900 and I believe that he died in Dickson County on 15 Mar 1918 (possibly buried at the Fawlkes Cemetary). I have yet to find any information on his parents. I believe that he was born in 1875, possibly in Stewart. He lived in District 3 of Dickson County. Does anyone have any information on him and/or his parents? His last name has been listed as both Sykes and Sikes.

Capt. James Craig, 2nd Regt of W. TN Militia ( My George Perkins was a 2nd Corp in this company.)

Sorry in advance for the lengthy post if none of this pertains to your family.

I am posting this because MY George Perkins was a corporal under Capt. James Craig, Commanding officer of a W. Tennessee Militia company in the War of 1812. I have copied the names from a muster list in hopes some of you can recognize your soldier. Please note the names below. I tried to correct any obvious misspellings of surnames but I dont know any of the familes so cant be certain who the last name should have been spelled. You can check the soldiers names againgst the Ancestry.com database of War of 1812 service records to see what unit your soldier served.

My GGGGG Grandfather was George Perkins who married Elizabeth Wynn/Wynne in Rockingham on the PeeDee River, Richmond Co. NC in 12/1809. We believe his family is the George Perkins enumerated in 1810 RichmondCo,NC in 1810.

George enlisted in DicksonCo, TN, he was mustered in at Fayetteville, TN Sept 1814, and was mustered out April 1815 for service in the War of 1812. George served as a 2nd Corporal in Capt. James Craig’s 2nd W. Tennessee Militia. Following is a listing of the muster roll for all the men who served at what rank if an officer. These men can be found on Ancestry.com, but this is the only listing of this particular company. The listing on Ancestry gives the entire 1000+ names of 11 companies in total, this is the only listing that breaks down who was specifically in Craig's Company.

Between the 1815 mustering out and 1830, George movements are largely unknown. In 1830 he can be found in DallasCo, 1840 in Mobile and Union Parish, LA AND Mobile, AL in 1850. Wife/Widow Elizabeth Wynn Perkins moves from Mobile, AL after Georges death onto HoustonCo, TX and the Perkins kids can be found in AngelinaCO, TX in 1860, RobertsonCo, TX in 1870 and 1880.

For those who served in this company, where did your family move to after being mustered? Might be helpful to know where others from the DicksonCo area went AFTER the War of 1812.

Officers
1. James Craig, Capt
2. Edmond W. Gee, 1st Lt.
3. Trustin B. Thomas, 2nd Lt.
4. Thomas Nesbitt, 3rd Lt.
5. Johnathin King, Ensign
6. Samuel Young, 1st Sgt.
7. John Letherdale, 2nd Sgt.
8.
