Nothing has been done yet. We're hoping to mark Reuben's grave and Lawson's, but just haven't moved forward. The property belong to a family name Tummins, Gunn descendants, and was on Garner's Creek Road. It could probably be found by checking with a Dickson County Tennessee message board.

The wife, Mrs. Tummins, was the daughter of Francis Marion Gunn, granddaughter of Andrew Jackson Gunn, son of Lawson. I'm sure there is still family around, but I haven't been able to look.

How are you a double descendant? I am a descendant of Lawson, and recently proved the Lawson line for my membership in DAR, the first of Reuben's descendants through Lawson to do so.

Thanks for answering. Please post here if anything moves forward.

My ggrandmother (Essie Inez Nichols Smith) was in DAR through Elisha to Reuben. What she apparently didn't know was that Sarah Gunn, wife of Nelson Phillips (Essie's grandparents), was the daughter of Dolly Gunn (daughter of Elisha Gunn) and Robert SB Gunn (son of Lawson Gunn). First cousins. Perhaps my ggrandmother knew, but just chose not to talk about it. Heh.

You were the first to establish that line from Reuben through Lawson, but his line has been in DAR quietly! ;-)

Anyway, I'd love to compare notes with you on Lawson's line.

The directions I have are as follows:
Gunn Cemetery is about one-half mile north of the Greene-Morgan County line just off US Route 67 and is in the northwest quarter of the southwest quarter of Section 33 in Township 13 N, Range 10W.

There is a nice web site detailing the names in the cemetery with some pictures at:

I am a James Gunn (Reuben's 2nd son)descendant. I live in the vicinity of the Gunn Cemetery in Illinois and have been there several times. This summer, I met some Lawson Gunn descendants who live in my area and were unaware of the cemetery. I believe they also descend from two of Reuben's sons. They went to the cemetery and were unable to find his grave. Is he buried in Tennessee? Their family had moved up to Illinois from Arkansas a couple of generations ago and they were starving for information about their line.

Further, I am planning a trip to Tennessee this summer and would like to visit Reuben's grave site, does anyone have directions?

Thanks,

Tobin Gunn

Tobin, you should put them in touch with Abb Gunn, World Genealogist, Clan Gunn Society (you can google it for details). According to his information, Lawson Gunn died in Humphreys County, TN. So, yes, it seems he should be buried in TN, although I haven't seen information on where that might be. I haven't pushed hard on this issue yet, though. I'm currently working on filling in Abb's information on my family line, which moved from TN to OK (I'm descended from Reuben Gunn through his sons Lawson AND Elisha Gunn, by the marriage of first cousins - sigh).

Anyway, Abb is probably your best lead.

The "original" Lawson Gunn, the son of Reuben and soldier of the War of 1812 is buried on the farmland on Garner's Creek Road, as described in my post of November 1. Also buried there is his son Andrew Jackson Gunn and other Gunns. This is not the Gunn cemetery that is described in other emails.

When I was a girl, some of the tombstones were readable and my great-Aunt Evie Gunn Coleman (b. 1895) remembered who was buried in the other ones. She even took us to the old slave cemetery on the property, although the wooden markers were long gone. She was 27 when her grandfather Andrew Jackson Gunn, (son of Lawson) died, and was very close with him. She felt it was her duty to keep the family information alive.

I deeply appreciate the information about the Gunn cemetery, however. thanks to whomever did the transcription.

Vesta: If you'll contact me off-board at ljanem@aol.com, I'd be happy to send what I have on the Reuben/Lawson line. You can also get my papers from DAR.
