Hello,

Can you be a little more specific as to what information you are seeking? Are you needing census records, marriage records or what?

Sometimes knowing what someone specifically needs helps us to check our sources and see what we can find.

Looking for Parent information, thought the obituary would have it. I read his well and not mention of parent or where he is from prior to South Carolina, Spartenburg. He is from SC but can not locate his birth. He lived to be 106.

Hello,

Unfortunately, the DeKalb County newspapers do not go back as far as 1873, so an obituary can not be obtained in this county.

According to the dates you gave this man lived to be 109 years old.

I did a quick check of the Ancestry.com Family Trees and there are several listings for this man and his wives, but no one has positive parents listed. One person has parents "possibly" as John Martin and Mary Unknown.

Another thing I noticed is a lot of the researchers have him being born in Maryland and not South Carolina, not sure if that is correct information.

In his will John Martin states "Whereon I now live in Skirt Mountain and track of Banard Creek be sold....."

Is there a Skirt Mountain in Tennessee? I see one if BC Candada. Also he calls his wife Sally, could that be short for Sara? Finally he gives money to John Martin Jr. does that mean the both carry the John "E." Martin name. Could John Martin Sr carry a different middle name?

Hello,

I can't find anything about Skirt Mountain, however, Banard Creek is in DeKalb County. So, I would assume Skirt Moutain is in the same place, maybe with a different name.

Yes, Sally is definately a nickname for Sarah. A lot of ladies were called Sally when their given birth name as Sarah.

As for the Jr. and Sr. aspect. I have actually seen it both ways. The Jr. could have the complete full name of his father or not.

As for finding a burial for John, I believe DeKalb County has a publication that has transcribed the counties cemeteries. Now that doesn't mean that every headstone has been accounted for and it also doesn't take into consideration the fact that John's headstone could be missing or has deteriorated over time and is now gone.

Someone has misread the old records. It is "Short Mountain". South west of Smithville. "Old" JOhn Martin and Anthony Parsley were commissioned by the new DeKalb Co officials to "view and lay out" a road from Smithville to the County Line" near Short MOuntain. John Martin had land south of Sink Creek which was just north or the new Warren County line.
