P. Watson + martha florence dodd

of Newport. Jackson County, was born in Hempstead County, Ark.: in 1848, and is the
only child of William and Nellie Caldwell) Watson, natives, respectively, of Virginia and Arkansas. William
Watson emigrated from Virginia to Middle Tennessee at an early day, and in 1837 located in Hempstead
County, Ark.: he was a physician and surgeon, and became the owner of a large plantation in Hempstead
County. In 1858 he moved to Jackson County, and the following year went to Craighead County, where he
engaged in farming and the practice of his profession until his death, which occurred in 1864: he served in
the Mexican War, and took quite an active part in politics as a Jeffersonian Democrat. The mother of our
subject died in 1855. Dr. R. P. Watson was reared to the pursuit of farming; he attended the common
schools of his native county, and after his father's death educated himself, attending the seminary at
Jonesboro until 1870, when he entered the old University Medical College at Louisville, graduating from the
latter institution in 1872. The same year he commenced the practice of medicine at Jonesboro, remaining,
however, but a short time. He also acted as medical examiner for a New York life insurance company.
November 7, 1872. Dr. Watson married Martha Florence Dodd, of Jackson County, a daughter of Atlas and
Margery (STEGALL) Dodd, the former a native of Mississippi, and the latter of Memphis, Tenn. Mr. and Mrs.
Dodd came to Jackson County at an early day, and settled in Village Township, where Dr. Watson now
resides; they now live in Izard County Ark. After his marriage. Dr. Watson removed to Jackson County, and
engaged in farming in connection with his practice. In 1881 he removed to La Crosse, Izard County, where
be devoted the greater part of his attention to his profession; in 1884 the cyclone destroyed his residence,
and the following year he moved to his present residence. Dr. Watson owns 2,354 acres of land in one tract,
of which 350 acres are under cultivation, and near by has another farm of 1000 acres, with 350 acres more
improved. He has erected a good cotton-gin and grist and saw mill, and has been one of the leading
stockmen of the county. He is a member of the White River Stock Breeders Association, and owns a great
many fine full-blooded horses and cattle and hogs, in which he takes a great deal of pride. Politically he is in
sympathy with the Democratic party, and has twice been a delegate to the State Convention. He is a member
of Philadelphia Lodge No. 127, A. F. & A. M., of Izard County, and also belongs to the I. O. O. F. at
Newport. Six children have been born to Mr. and Mrs, Watson. viz.: Margery Ella, Belle Willie Dodd, who
died in 1881, aged eighteen months: Gracie, Baxter B. and Robert S. Mrs. Watson is a member of the
Methodist Episcopal Church, and also of the Eastern Star Chapter, of Newberg. The Doctor is one [p.911]
of the live and enterprising men of Jackson County, where he is well known for his public spirit and active
interest in every public enterprise.

***

Arkansas Land Records show: NAME--ATLAS J.
Does anyone know of a living direct male descendent of the earlier families of Prior, Taylor, Campbell, and Dutton Hill. Because this family seems to be stimed perhaps we could have a DNA test. I'm sure there would be enought people interested to contribute to the cost.

I am looking for any information on a John Britt. He was born and raised in Decatur Co. I'm not sure if he was from Parsons or Scotts Hill. He raised a girl by the name of Martha Elizabeth, (Easter Britt}. Easter is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Decaturville Tn. John Britt would be my great-grandfather. I am trying to find out who he married, who his other children might have been, where he lived and what he done. Please, can anyone help me?
I am also seeking information on the Jennings Family. They are also from Decatur Co. I found a Ruby Jennings listed in a funeral register book from my mother's and my grandmother's funeral. I have found out that she was an Arnold before she got married. She would have been related to my grandmother, Mary Arnold, Britt. Mary Arnold, Britt had brothers and sisters named: Elbert Arnold, Bertha Arnold,James Ted and James E. Ruby Arnold married a Jennings, and I would like to know who she married, who the children were and who the children are of today. Any information greatly appreciated.Send to yankeeatheart72@AOL.com

John W Flowers in 1850 Census

Hi guys,
I was looking for my gggf, John Wesley Flowers in the 1850 census and I thought I found him in the 1850 census in Decatur Co., Tennessee. (He was born in TN.) After closer examination, I realized this couldn't be my John W. as he was about 15 years too young but it was interesting to see the other names listed with him. There was an Evaline, age 14, a Martha, age 12, a George W., age 10, and then John W., age 8. My John Wesley was about 23 years old in 1850. (I actually found him in Jackson Co. AL.) My John had a sister named Evaline and a grandson named George W. I'm thinking that these must have family names that were passed on. But who are these children living in Tenn. in 1850? They are in the household of a Thos. Russell, age 57 and what appears to be 5 of his adult children. The Russells are all listed as being born in N. Carolina. Two of the Flowers children are born in Tennessee (the oldest and the youngest) and the two in the middle in Alabama. Were these children orphaned and raised by the Russells? Who were their parents? How are they related to my Tenn.-Ala. Flowers?

I have recently found out that my John Wesley Flowers had a brother-in-law named Russell married to his wife's sister, Martha A. Ottinger, but I can't find the connection to this Russell. Also, one of the Russell daughters in the census reportedly married an unknown Flowers, but for these to be her children, she would have had the first one at age 12. Possible, I guess, but highly unlikely.

My line is through Charles Wesley Flowers (1794-1855) and Evilina Coffee (1798-1831). Any insights will be appreciated?

Chuck

Amanda C. Clark was born in 1837 in Henderson County, Tennessee (the “C” may have been for Catherine). She married James H. Stephens who was born about 1836 and died after 1870. They were married possibly before 1858 (some say 1860) in Decatur County, Tennessee. They lived in Decatur County, Tennessee and it is believed that he owned a sawmill in Swallow Bluff (in 1860 census). They and other family members may have lived in or near Pleasant Point. They were living in Decatur in 1870. Any help with this family is appreciated,
lindajcox3@hotmail.com

But they also lived around McNairy, Gibson, Chester and Henderson Counties and had Mayo relatives in Decatur Co.. His parents were George W. and Talisa Elizabeth (Hopper) Williamson. I cannot find him on any census. The only record I have of him is a listing on his father's Civil War Pension Applicatn. He is listed on there with his siblings. I have been told by several family members that he went into the mountains one day and was never heard from again. If anyone has any information about him, I would appreciate hearing from you.
Anyone searching these names in the Decatur county I would appreciate hearing from.
Specifically, the Duke/Dickey lines through the Parsons, and surrounding area.
I have been through the cemeteries at Bible Hill, Crossroads and others around there close recently, and I stumbled on the info that there are still living Dukes in that area.
I have so many questions and not nearly enough answers about these two family lines.
My gg grandparents settled in that area, William Taylor Dickey and his wife, along with their daughter Laura Ardella (?) a half breed child left on their doorstep shortly after birth (ie the questions!), who was my paternal grandmother. Her son, Fred, was my gfather.
I believe Laura was in fact a Dickey child by birth, but the story was very hush-hush and I would love to speak with anyone who might have more details.
Nova Mae Duke Greenhaw was my grandfather Freds youngest sister, ie, the baby of the family. She married a Greenhaw and last I knew she lived in Alabama. I do not know how to contact her or her daughter, or if she is even still alive.
So,,,,anyone???
Thanks!
tnmyhome2
Jerry, I noticed that you had a post stating a marriage in 1891. I have found a marriage that I am trying to connect to our James.
All I have is J.M. Bratton married N.C. Dial on July 21, 1891
In your searching by chance, did you come up with any other marriages in 1891?
If this is our James M, then he married again in 1896 to Gusie Curry, 1896, Lake Co, Tn.
If you have any information to pass on, I sure would appreciate it. I do not know what N.C. stands for?? Have you heard of a Dial family or Bratton family in the Decatur area?
Sharon
sharonjohnson@oceana.net

I am trying to locate the father of James H. Tubbs who was born around 1826. His father was supposedly from NY and his mother was supposedly from KY. He married 1) Martha Ann Marriah Sikes and later married 20 Elizabeth Sullivan.

I have it narrowed down to some possibilities from the 1830 census of TN. His father could be Abraham or James of Smith Co., TN or William Tubbs of Hardeman Co., TN or James Tubbs of Perry Co., TN or Isaac Tubbs of Henderson Co., TN.

If anyone can help me eliminate any of these (who know the children of these lines), I would greatly appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Linda (new email tubbsrw@hargray.com)
Seeking info on NANCY BONNER PARHAM and her daughter ZILLA ANN PARHAM DOUGLAS, wife of Rev Joseph S. Douglas, Methodist minister in Decatur Co.

ZILLA ANN is buried at Concord United Methodist Church cemetery in Decatur Co with an identifying headstone, but the last known info on her mother NANCY is from the 1850 Federal Census, where NANCY is identified as residing in the home of ZILLA ANN and Rev. DOUGLAS; Nancy is "age 70, born in VA."

NANCY and her husband THOMAS PARHAM (b. (Sussex Co?), VA, ca. 1770--d. Williamson Co, TN, 1832) moved with their respective families from VA to GA in the late 1780s; Nancy and Thomas were married in Columbia Co, GA, and resided in that part that later became Warren Co. In about 1817, this couple moved with most of their children to Williamson Co, TN, where they lived until THOMAS's death in 1832 and the children dispersed throughout TN and to other states.

I have data on the PARHAM, BONNER, DOUGLAS families which I will be glad to exchange.

I am looking for any information anyone might have about the Taylor/Dickey line.
I have William Taylor Dickey married to Mary ?
Mary and William both have been very difficult to search.
I believe they married in or around the Orangeburg SC area, but moved to W. Tenn around the Parsons/Lexington area.
When they show up on a census in the Decatur area, they show a daughter, Laura Ardella, who from family stories, is supposed to have been a half breed child left on their doorstep as a newborn. I believe that Laura was in fact a Dickey by birth, but which Dickey is the question.
Wllm Taylor and Mary are buried in Decatur Co alongside of Williams baby sister called 'Sis'.
Any help would be so appreciated!

Stone, married Nora Robbins in Decatur Co. Their next older child, Ephriam Lee Stone, appears in the 1910 Census, of Mississippi. There are no Census records on either Ephriam or Malina after 1900, and some think that Ephriam died in 1902, and Malinda died in 1908, but are not sure where. Does anyone know of these two person where about, deaths, or other info, between 1900 and 1910?

If anyone has pictures of Burrell, Richard Burrell, James Franklin (Jim Frank) Rushing and/or their families & have a scanner would you please send them to us? They are my husband's ancestors. He doesn't even have a picture of his grandfather, Jim Frank Rushing. We would also like to have Hurst & Rimmer pictures. I am using the Family Tree Maker to research our ancestry. Thank you, Marilyn Rushing

Need info about Joseph Marion Adkisson who married Mary Francis Gill some time around 1870. I believe he may be the son of Absolem (no proof), could possibly be the brother of Issac Samuel Adkisson. A Josh Adkisson is listed in the 1870 Decatur census

William F. (probably Franklin) Patterson (1851-1918) married Sarah Jane Davis. I have found him in census records for 1880, 1900, and 1910 - all Decatur Co., TN.

I think I've found him in 1860. There is a W. F. Patterson, age 9, living in the household of James and Anna Haggard in Decatur Co. Also in the household is an 8 yr. old male, P. J. Patterson. I'm assuming this is probably a brother. The two boys are no longer in this household in the 1870 census.

I have several questions. Who were the parents and siblings of William F. Patterson? Where (probably in Decatur Co.) are William and Sarah buried? Why were the two boys in the Haggard household in 1860?

Any assistance in bringing down this brick wall will be greatly appreciated.

Carlene
Missouri Ozarks

A., Ervin, Rufus, Geo C. and Martha J.

I believe this Geo C. to be my great grandfather George Columbus Haney who came to Shelby and Nacogdoches Counties, Texas between 1850 and 1860 with his brother James A.
Evan W. and Caroine (White) Haney TN > TX

Evan W. and J. Caroline (White) Haney left Decatur Co TN for Texas about 1857 and are at Richland Crossing, Navarro Co TX for the 1860 census. His wife shown as J.C. and two young daughters are on that census (indexed as Harney). Evan died in November of 1862 from illness while serving in the Tx 19th Reg, Burfords Cavalry.

Haney and White family members were back in Decatur Co TN. David B. and Sarah (White) Haney were Evan's family. We suspect that Sarah's family was the Joseph White family. According to the family story handed down from my great-grandmother, Sarah's widowed father married Evan's widowed mother, with Sarah refusing to come to Texas because "women who go to Texas all died." Decatur Co TN records show that Sarah Haney and Joseph White were married.

Brothers James Addison "Uncle Ad" Haney and George C. Haney are in Shelby Co for the 1860 census (indexed as Hany). George is in Nacogdoches and Uncle "Ad" in Jasper Co by 1870.

The descendants of these three brothers have spent decades finding each other and at long last, finding Evan, George and Uncle Ad. In our family, Evan and Caroline both died in 1862 leaving four orphan daughters in Jasper Co TX. Their 4th daug Johanna Evin (Haney) Poe was born on Christmas Day 1862 and Caroline died the next day. My gg-grandmother Mary (Haney) Spence married into the Spence/Woodall families that took in several of the girls. So did Martha and Fannie.

Each family has its story and we seek to learn more. We are interested in any information about the Haney and White families.

In 1807, George, Benjamin, and Joel Graves purchase 200 acres of land in Randolph County, NC. This land is on the waters of Toms Creek. In 1817 this land is sold. In that deed George is of Randolph County, NC and Benjamin and Joel are of Granville District, SC. These 3 were listed earlier(1803) in county court minutes of Randolph County concerning road maintenance. Also listed working under George Graves's oversight is Kinchen Ivey. Benjamin Graves is a witness to prove the will of Benjamin Ivey in 1802. Are these 3 Graves men brothers? Does anyone have further information concerning any of them? What is the Graves connection to the Benjamin or Kinchen Ivey family?
Felix Augustus DUNIVANT in Decatur County, TN

Felix Augustus DUNIVANT (b. 1863 and who is buried in Decaturville City Cemetery and the husband of Nellie ENGLAND), is sometimes listed as a son of William Arch DUNAVANT and Sallie CURRIN. I believe this is incorrect information. F.A. or Felix Augustus never appears in the same household with William Arch DUNAVANT.

Instead Felix Augustus is the son of Jessie George (or J.G.)DUNIVANT, who is living in Newbern or District 6 in Dyer County, TN. The name Felix Aug is in the household of George DUNIVANT/DUNIVENT in the 1880 census. F.A. is also in the household in 1870 and an F.A. DUNIVANT is listed as a beneficiary in the will of J.G. DUNIVANT. A transcription of this will can be found linked to the Dyer County, TN, USGenWeb page.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has other PRIMARY SOURCH information on Felix Augustus DUNIVANT or his father Jessie George DUNIVANT.

If F.A. is NOT the son of William Arch DUNAVANT, then individuals who have that link should try to correct it if possible.

Finally, since Felix Augustus DUNIVANT apparently died in 1923, does anyone know where he was in 1920. He may have mistakenly been omitted from that census. Nellie DUNIVANT (listed as Married) is in the household of her father, James ENGLAND, in Decatur County, TN. In 1930, Nellie is listed as a "widow" and is still living with her father in Decatur County.

We have just received the death certificate of Samuel K. Hurst, Jr., a Missionary Baptist preacher. He was my husband's ggg-uncle. He was born 08-24-1861 & died 12-20-1917. His father was Samuel Kelsie Hurst. His mother's name appears to be Martha Bennett? This would be Laws's gg-grandmother. Our records indicate that the children of Samuel K. Hurst, Jr. are Princes, Otis, Utis, Clarence & Clara Hurst. Also we ordered a death certificate for his sister, Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Hurst Kennedy. She was married to John Shade Kennedy & both are buried in Doe Creek Cemetery. Her death certificate cannot be found. Does anyone know exactly where she died in Sept, 1937?
Thanks for any help,
Marilyn Rushing

I know there was a group around the Scotts Hill area, but may have been others in the county or neighboring counties. I don't know much about that group except that James and Emilia had Pinkney and Granville. Pinkney married several times, and Granville moved to TX. There also was an Upton McClanahan in there somewhere, as he is buried at Scotts Hill.

Her sister, Mary (Molly) Williamson, married William LaFate Creasy , who was born in Decatur Co., TN. Her father's name was George Williamson and her mother's name was Eliza Hooper. I have her Death Certificate and it says that they were born in TN also. Alice died on May 1, 1941 in Kennett, MO. She married my great grandfather, Thomas Douglas Martin in 1906 somwhere in AR. They had two daughters, Retha and Ruby. Retha died around 1915 around age 8. Ruby was my grandmother. Alice later married a Milton Young. Her name was Young when she died. I am trying to find information about the Williamson side. Alice had two brothers, Thomas and Riley Williamson. Riley was married to a lady named Rose and they had a son named Burley. Alice had two sisters also, Tennie, who married a Zach Hopper and Molly, who married a Billy Creasy. Molly and Billy lived around the Quilin/Poplar Bluff, MO area. One of his son's, William Riley Jones was my grandfather. After his parent's death, William lived with the Fisher family. A Fisher daughter married into the Roan family of Portageville, Mo. Apparently my grandfather got into a fight (thought he'd killed a man, but didn't)and crossed the river to Missouri. He became a sharecropper in S.E. Mo. Any help or additional information would be appreciated.

FRANCES "FANNIE" E. MAYO

I am looking for information on a Fannie Mayo, born about 1863 in TN. She married Henry H. WIlliamson sometime before 1880 probably in Hardin Co., as Henry is listed with his mother on the 1870 census in Hardin Co. Fannie and Henry are listed on the 1880 census in Hardin Co., TN. I am trying to find who Fannie's father was. I believe it may be Bennie Mayo. There was a Jr. and Sr. Bennie Mayo. Fannie died in 1893-1894 in Stoddard Co., MO. I would appreciate any help with them. Fannie Mayo and Henry Williamson had 6 sons, Lee, A. C., Oscar, Gillum, Cheatham and Odis.
Thanks
Charlotte Christensen
