Hello -

I am not in the Nashville, Tenn. area, so I cannot get a copy of the death notice for Eural D. Harvill for you. If you do not get a reply with the text of the death notice in the next couple of days, you can opt to contact the Nashville Public Library and ask for an image of the death notice to be sent to you electronically. I see by using the Nashville Public Library obituary database his death notice was published in the 13 Aug 1980 issue of the Tennessean newspaper. This is the contact info to make an image request:
Beth Odle
(615) 862-5804 ext. 5751
Be sure to ask about the charge for such a service. These days, as I am sure you well know, most public libraries must charge for such services, as their budgets have been severely cut for years and years.

At the public library where I worked in the Local History/Genealogy department, we copied electronic images of newspaper death notices and sent them attached to email to those who requested them.

I suspect you are trying to track down descendants of one of the 2 WWII service men whose letters to their parents Mr. & Mrs. E[ural] H[obart] Harvill in Drumright, Oklahoma.

Kudos to you for trying to help out some descendants.

Note: I have sent messages to those I found on Ancestry.com with public member trees for Eural Hobart Harvill and family who lived in Drumright, giving them a "heads up" regarding the search for descendants to be entrusted with the letters found in hatbox. Two of the people I contacted have already replied to my messages and said they will follow up.

Jean, in Missouri

5-7-2013

Can someone please check to see if an obituary was published for a Mr. Eural D. Harvill who died 8/11/1980 in Nashville, TN? Trying to find out names of his surviving spouse and/or children, if any, or at least a street address. Do not need a printed copy--you can just type the text in an e-mail message or send me a scanned image if you know how to do that. Thanks. keith345@hotmail.com Genealogical Researcher

When I use familysearch, there are two types of indexes that come up. One is specific to the counties and one is statewide. For the record lookup for you, only the Davidson County index had the info. I suspect the statewide index omits major cities, because as I mentioned the State Archive gave special instructions to find records on marriages that took place in them. I don't remember what the directions were though.
It is sometimes suprising what a free site can have that a paid site doesn't. NY State has a huge collection of newspapers at a free site.
I must say however, when a transcript has a funny spelling, ancestry is more likely to suggest it as a possible match, which has helped me find ones I would have missed. It is, I think, a major strength.

Denise,

I am not related, but I may have found a little info you don't have.

I found a marriage record for Lee Andrew Bailey and Mary Ella Collins. They were married in Milwaukee, WI 21 Jun 1893. It says the parents of Lee Bailey were George Bailey and Sarah Thomas. It says the parents of Mary Ella Collins were Michael Collins and Mary E. Rolley.

Lee Andrew Bailey, "Wisconsin, Marriages, 1836-1930"
Name: Lee Andrew Bailey
Spouse's Name: Mary Ella Collins
Event Date: 21 Jun 1893
Event Place: Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Father's Name: George Bailey
Mother's Name: Sarah Thomas
Spouse's Father's Name: Michael Collins
Spouse's Mother's Name: Mary E. The census says he is single, but that is likely a census mistake. Lee's wife, Mary is living with her mother in Rock Co. WI. Parents were Lee Bailey, born Nashville, TN and Mary Collins, born Milwaukee, WI

I'm guessing that this unnamed daughter was your grandmother Gladys Marie Bailey (who married Albert C. Black).

I didn't find the location of Lee Bailey in 1910, but his wife is living with her mother in a boarding house in Milwaukee.

1910 Milwaukee, WI (boarding house)
SELF Frances Rybon F 28y Michigan
DAU Mina Rybon F 7y Michigan
Mary Bailey F 36y Wisconsin WI Ireland (widowed) had 1 child, 1 living
Gladys Bailey F 10y Wisconsin TN WI
Mary Collins F 65y Ireland Ireland Ireland (had 6 children, 5 living)
Patri Flaukhaen M 45y Wisconsin
Anna Flaukhaen F 30y Wisconsin
Theo Flaukhaen M 6y Ohio
May Winchell F 26y Wisconsin
Fanny Gillett F 29y Wisconsin
Joe Wagner M 41y Austria
John Tinner M 29y Hungary
Mary Tinner F 33y Hungary

In 1920 Lee Baily and wife Mamie (Mary) are in Racine.
I only use the free parts of ancestry.com, so I am not sure what they offer. I found the record at familysearch.org, it was a transcript of the short form. The Tennessee State Library and Archives will electronically send what they find in a lookup for a fee, but the request was to be made by mail. I seem to recall there being special information about lookups for major cities, so I suggest you read up at their website. It will come up easily if you google it.

Bare minimum if you order what they have, they will send a copy of the microfilm of what the county clerk wrote as a record of the marriage.

Some county clerks began keeping full marriage records in the 1880's. Not sure which ones. Full records would have the couples ages, and names of their parents.
I have no idea how you find out who kept records when. The cost of a search varies. Maybe try checking find-a-grave if you have not yet.

I did a search for this marriage. i found a county record which indicates it took place 5 Jan 1900. The database i checked did not list parents names.

According to the info I found- between 1880 and the 1920's county clerks began keeping more detailed records, which were filed seperately. Apparently for free you can personally check Tenessee State Library and Archives for a detailed record. State residents can obtain records for a search fee of $10. out of state requests cost 20.

There is no guarantee the record would have more information. if they cant find a full record, they send a basic one that gives the bride/ groom, witnesses and minister's names.

BTW the marriage took place in Davidson, Co., TN as your friend suspected.

Looks like my George Perkins, born 1782 in either GA or NC found his way to DavidsonCo, TN by 1811. According to Ancestry.coms new database of early TN tax records, George paid taxes in at least 1811 and 1812. The image is unreadable for 1811, but 1812 is fine. Then according to his wifes Bounty Land Grant for W. of 1812 military service, he enlisted in HickmanCo, TN in Sept, 1814. After the War he eventually wound up in AL, Dallas county, in 1830 census. Between, 1815 and 1830. Looking for others who had family in the area about the same time who might have migrated similiarily.

James Stoval(l)/Mollie Berkl(e)y July 15, 1886 Davidson, TN

Hello, I believe this James Stovall to be the one listed as the deceased husband of Mary (Mollie) E. Burklin listed in the 1900 Federal Census for Davidson County. I found info of their marriage on July 15, 1886 on familysearch.org - names listed as James Stoval and Stovall and Mollie Berkly and Berkley. 1900 census shows 3 children: Hattie M. born Apr 1887, Ruth A. born Jan 1892 and Sallie L. born Jul 1893 or 1898 (I can't make out the exact year). Would appear that James died during the decade of 1890-1900 but I can not find any further information on him or his ancestors. Would appreciate deeply all help!

I was curious. I am currently searching for my great grand mother's father. Her name is showing up differently in severaly different places. I have it as "Mary K" "Mamie" and "Arie", the last one was possibly "Marie" - surname of Wolf - could you tell me if any of Philip Wolf's female children carried any of these name variances and later married a man by the name of Sterling Smith? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Glad to hear from you. I have very little info on John and Lavinia. I have an address book of my mother's and found John and Lavinia in there. I have them listed as John being the son of Henry Bamford. Do you have any info on any children they might have had? Are you related to the Bamfords' or Lavinia (and I don't even have her maiden name). I have not done much genealogy in the last couple of years but would be willing to share some of my info. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hey Randy,
I'm not part of your family, but while looking for other family members, I came across a Pritchett/Ursery Cemetery on Hester Beasley Road. It's in Davidson County, about 3 miles from the Williamson County line. I grew up in that area, & never heard of this cemetery, so it has to be old. Some graves go back to the 1800's. Not sure if this helps, just passing along the information.
Good luck with your search. Kelly

http://www.www3.gendisasters.com/tennessee/20651/nashville-t...

SEVENTEEN MEN DROPPED INTO A RIVER FROM A BURNING BRIDGE.

Nashville, Tenn., May 20. -- A terrible accident occurred on the Lebanon branch of the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis railroad about nine miles from this city Saturday afternoon. The bridge across Stone River caught fire from a passing train. Seventeen men, two whites and fifteen negroes, who were working on the road near by, went to the bridge and took an engine on it for the purpose of extinguishing the fire with the water from the tender. The span gave way, carrying the men and engine into the river, fifty feet below. WILLIAM MORGAN, white, the engineer, received internal injuries. The fireman, CHARLES GRIBBLE, also white, had his leg broken and received other severe injuries, and three of the negro laborers were killed and six dangerously wounded.

Cedar Rapids Standard Iowa 1889-05-23
