Greetings, Nashville-ites!
Do you have any idea what was happening in your fair city
150 years ago? If you think times are tough now, the following item might make you feel thankful:
"On February 22, 1862, General Grant issued an order sus-
pending civil government in Tennessee and declaring mar-
tial law. On the 3d of March, 1862, President Lincoln
appointed Andrew Johnson a brigadier-general, and mili-
tary governor of Tennessee. Thus the whole of Tennessee
was placed under military law — Middle and West Tennessee
by the United States and East Tennessee by the Confederate
States. Governor Johnson arrived at Nashville and as-
sumed command as military governor March 12, 1862."
