Joseph Bowen, b ca 1849 Coffee County, Tennessee

Joseph Bowen, father William M Bowen [b ca 1824 Rutherford County, Tenn] and mother Elizabeth, surname unknown were on the 1850 Coffee County Census. The pages they are on are missing on the Ancestry search, but I found them some time back when reading the actual film. William was the son of Thomas Bowen [1799-1862] and Rebecca Walkup.

What happened to William? Died in the Civil War? Migrated elsewhere? The only Joseph I find in the area who matches the time frame, shows up with Temperance [Tempe] Bowen, no William. Is this Elizabeth listed under a second name? What about Joseph? In 1870 Joseph, Temperance/Tempe and Catherine, b ca 1852 are together. Is Catherine a sister or wife to Joseph? Can't find them in 1860 to see if Catherine is in the h/h. A different person shows up as Joseph's wife in later census. Could this Joseph be William M Bowen's son? Or is this another person altogether?

I am trying to locate the family of Thomas Edward Young, son of William. He is buried at Holland Hill Cemetery. I would like to talk to whomever is over the cemetery. It is so neat and lovely out in the middle of nowhere.Thomas Young 1863-1933 had a sister by the name of Martha Ann. I would really like to know what happened to her. If anyone could help, I would greatly appreciate it. I can not find her after she married a Thomas A. Bowen. What could have happened to her?

I am seeking any info on any Bates in Huntsville or Madison county. My mothers father was named Charles {Charlie} Edward Bates born in 1900 in Tn., His 1st marriage was to Alva { Alvie} Mae Mathis ( parents were Francis (Frank) Marion Mathis & Cora Lee ? Fulmer? I know she was born in coffee co. 1891}. With her he had 3 children, Lois Earline Bates Cosper Vaughn, Charles Alvin Bates { known as Buddy] & Bobby Bates. I know these children were born in Troup county, LaGrange Ga. I also know he had a 2nd wife & had children with her also. He had a brother Ollie whom i think married a Lois Sales on 19 Jun 1926 . Sister's named Ethel whom I believe married Dutch { may be a nickname} Elderman. His other siblis were Lee, Martha< & Marion Bates. I know when Charlie became like a baby & needed constant care is when my mother was found to take care of him. There's a cousin Roy Bates I remember hearing of & a Nolan Bates who married a Dorothy {Dot}, Then a Lillian. He is of Native americam decent. I know he lived in Huntsville in the1960's & 70's. I believe he was here in the 1910's & after. I know nothing else & My mom has passed away, there isn't anyone to ask. All help is needed & this brickwall might start to crumble. Thank you & I am sorry it is so long.I am posting here to see if any one knows these people & maybe find out the parents

My family that I'm researching are the Duncans of Cannon and Coffee Counties. I recently received an old yearbook/autograph book that had belonged to my great aunt Alma Duncan. The inscriptions in it are from 1890, Beech Grove, TN, and one of the easier to read inscriptions is from a schoolmate named 'Autie Paschal'. I found an Auta Paschal living in Bradyville, Cannon County, in the 1880 census. She is listed as niece, living with and Edmond and Bettie Talor (Taylor?). Edmond is listed as 'M.D.' for occupation.

Her inscription reads 'Many glad birthday(s?) may you see And may each bring glad thoughts of me.'

Does anyone know about this young lady? I will also be posting this query on the Cannon County board.
Thanks, Rebecca

Wondering about a possible link between the Jasper or Benton Templeton families, and the Oliver or Isaac Duncan families. Has anyone researched this? I noticed that my g-grandfather (Isaac Denny Duncan) in the 1860 census was living nearby as a young boy to the Jasper Templeton household. (Isaac Denny Duncan is actually orphaned and living in a Lemmons/Simmons? household.)

Benton Bell Templeton was also living with Jasper Templeton, apparently his older brother. What got my attention was the similarity of names--Isaac Duncan went on to have several children and name them Benton, Bell, John Templeton, and so on. Perhaps they were just good friends, but it makes me wonder if they could have been related?
Any information on the Templeton family appreciated.
Regards, Rebecca

I am looking for information on my great grandmother Hester Wilson. She was born abt 1865 in TN. I am not sure what her maiden name was. She was married to a Will Wilson. She was living in Paint Rock, Jackson County, AL in the 1910 Census. She had 2 sons Fulton James & Sam. Both boys were born in Tullahoma, TN. Hester and her 2 sons were working at the Pencil Factory in Paint Rock. Will Wilson had passed away by this time. In the 1920 & 1930 Census, Hester was living with her son Fulton. In 1946, both her sons passed away. Sam passed away in Jan 1946. On his obit, it stated that he had a mother Hester Wilson living in Manchester, TN at the time. His brother Fulton died in Oct 1946. There was no mention of Hester. I believe that she died sometime between Jan and Oct of 1946. I just can't find anything on her death.. Any help would be appreciated.

He married Margaret Anderson the "winter of 1862 or 1863" and moved to Vienna, Johnson co, Ill for a couple of years. I have William's military history which states that he was born in Coffee Co tn but have not been able to locate him on any of the census reports before 1860 to confirm this information. I am told that his parent's were William Henry Wheeler and Elizabeth Rae Mason but I have not been able to verify this information. Any help would be appreciated. Barb

I am looking for ANYTHING on John and Jacob Lemmons (could be spelled many ways!)who were living in Coffee Co. in 1840 census.
I believe but am not sure that the 2 sons of John Lemmons are Jacob W. and Isaac. I believe that John's father was Jacob who was 70-80 years old in the 1840 Coffee Co. census. Below are the census from this county. Any lookups would be appreciated in any Coffee Co. marriage (even female since it looks like John had many daughters), deed, probate or circuit court books! Julie Coley - Wichita Falls, TX

John Lemmons is in the 1840 Coffee Co. census with 2 males 15-20, 1 male 40-50, 1 female under 5, 2 females 5-10, 2 females 10-15, 2 females 20-30 and 1 female 40-50

Also listed in the 1840 Coffee Co. Census is Jacob Lemmons who is not far from John (on the same census page) 1 Male 70-80, 1 Female 60-70.

Wm E. & Belle Reed Family - 1920 Census

The 1920 Coffee Co., TN census includes a family headed by William E. and Belle Reed (both b 1880ish). Children are Bessie and "Elbern". By 1930 this family was in Rutherford Co., TN. Bessie was then 17. "Elbern" (12) was now spelled "Elvin". I am not sure which spelling is correct. There was another daughter by then, Rubie Lee (10). Earlier, William's 1918 WWI Draft Registration shows that he and Belle were living in Cannon Co. William E. Reed may have been a son of Adam J. Reed whose family was in Cannon Co. in 1880. If so, William's siblings would include Becton(?), Jesse, Chester Arthur and Lila. Is anyone familiar with this family? I need dates of death for William E. and Belle (possibly Nannie Belle) Reed. I would love to hear from any of their surviving children or grandchildren. Any information at all about William, Belle and their children would be welcome.

POW/MIA Korean War, JAMES WESLEY JONES

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Coffee County, TN as his home of record.

Soldier:James Wesley Jones
Born:December 6, 1929, Caucasian
Date of loss: DEcember 2, 1950, captured (POW) in North Korea, His remains were never recovered

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 35 families in TN that have not been located. There is one family from Coffee County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-233
We may be the leading Kittrell resource out there and we are free to descendants and spouses and helpful to everybody else.

We have a family tree of nearly 35000 (35K) Kittrell descendants and spouses that is totally private and a MyFamily site that is private and free and available to all Kittrell descendants and spouses.

Just post or e-mail if you fit the bill and want to see thousands of bits of Kittrell info.

The area of the future Gates County of North Carolina is the origin in the USA of the largest Kittrell family and Bertie County, NC was the home of one or more of the next generation, and later they moved on through Craven, Pitt, Granville, Carteret, Davidson and other NC counties as land grew to scarce for the number of male heads of household to feel that they could prosper.

After that period of homesteading in various counties, many in some branches moved to other states including many times over Tennessee, with Sumner appearing to be one of the first stops and many times over Maury County and other coumties including listed alphabetically Anderson, Cannon, Coffee, Davidson, DeKalb, Hamilton, Henry Hickman, Jackson, Knox, Lawrence, Lewis, Loudon, Macon, Marshall, Maury, Meigs, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Perry, Rutherford, Shelby, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale, Wayne, White, Williamson, Wilson and Weakley Counties, among many other, later became the home of many Kittrells of one line or another or multiple lines.

Anyone with Kittrell in their lore please write or post or both!

Anyone with Kittrell in any Tennessee document is welcome to write and to share info on an area rich in Kittrells, complicated to delineate from which Kittrell they descend and of which we have a large knowledge. We lose track of some of the female Kittrell lines consistently in every generation and would like to add them back to the family tree.

The name has many spellings through the centuries in public record including as examples only Kittrell, Kittrel, Kitrel, Kitrell, Kitterlin, Kitterill, Kitterell,..., leterally dozens or literally dozens depending how well you spell such things.

We will assist anyone on Kittrell matters (for free of course other than the wealth we get from both of us sharing some of what we know).

And we will be most pleased to find more missing links broken from our tree due to distance and change of generations to those who barely know a whit of their Kittrell kin.

I was happy to find that you have relatives named Simmons so close to where my relatives lived. Perhaps we may be related in some way. Here is some information about mine.

My grandfather's name was George Gwynn Wooten. His wife/ my grandmother's maiden name was Nethie Simmons. They lived in Hillsboro for many years. He passed on, then she passed around 1975. Their children's names: Alva Attenas Wooten Carpenter, Ezella Wooten Dixon, Arnie and wife Geneva, George Blanton and wife Dixie, and Blevis (Pete) and wife Betty. All have passed on except for Dixie, Pete and Betty.

On the Simmons side: Charlie Simmons and his wife Alta (spelling?), Corb Simmons and his wife Ola, daughter Izenith.
Zena Simmons Halbert was Nethie's sister. Another close relative to Nethie was Della (married name unknown at this time).

I hope this helps you and me. Thanks!

CROSSLIN & MOORE of Falls Co, TX / Coffee Co, TN

I am looking for information on Venus CROSSLIN and Clara Mae CROSSLIN.

I have found record of a Venus CROSSLIN married to David D. MOORE (who was later married to Maurine CLAGHORN) in 1925. I have found record of Clara Mae CROSSLIN married to (David’s brother) Elmer Roy MOORE on Jan 31, 1921. The information I have was transcribed from “Families of Falls County,” compiled and edited by the Falls County Historical Commission. David and Elmer were the sons of Abraham Alonzo MOORE and Minnie DRAKE of Falls County, TX

I am unsure if this posting is the same women I’m searching for, but I believe it is. The information on the Venus and Clara Mae CROSSLIN that I’m looking for is as follows:

They are the daughters of John Ewell CROSSLIN (b) Aug 3, 1882 (d) Sep 22, 1908, buried in Farrar Hill Cemetery, Coffee County, TN. His death certificate shows his date of death as Sep 25, 1908. His wife Ida Muncy SPINDLE (b) Aug 17, 1881, Noah, Coffee County, TN (d) Mar 14, 1914, (this date is on a headstone, but may also be different than her death certificate) buried at Farrar Hill Cemetery, Coffee Co, TN

The information that I was given from a family member was that Venus CROSSLIN moved to Texas and Clara Mae CROSSLIN married a MOORE.

Any information known on these families would be greatly appreciated!

Gayle Ragland
gragland@bsu.edu
I am looking for information on the husbands of Chrisanne DAVIS. She was married to Benjamin Williams on Dec 9, 1909, (she is listed as "C.A. Davis") in Coffee County, TN. I do not know if they divorced or he died. Then she married Henry Merritt JONES on May 15, 1913, (she is listed as Christine Davis)also in Coffee County. Chrisanne had no children with either man. Mr. JONES, I understand, was called "Robinson" or "Robisson" JONES. I believe she lived with Mr. JONES until his death. I have no information on either of these men. I'm looking for birth and death dates as well as the families they are connected to.
CAN ANYONE HELP WITH LOCATION OF TN TOWN NAMED MARDELL? My GGGG Grandfather's children's death certificates say that my GGGG Grandfather was from Mardell, TN. His birth was Bet. 1802 - 1805, according to census records. The furthest I can track him was Coffee Co in 1850 ----- his name was Clayborne Allen (variously rendered as Clarborne, Claiborne, etc). Lots of people named Allen in TN, and even Clayborne turns out to be a common name, so very important that I find this town so I know where to look to get pre-1850 information on my family, including possibly Clayborne's marriage certs, etc.

An 1891 letter written by James McCoy Carlisle, Sr., b. 1811, to his son, James McCoy Carlisle, Jr., b. 1851, discusses James Sr.'s family history and has recently come to light. We already had the names of James McCoy Carlisle, Sr.'s mom and dad, Jane (McCoy), b. 1779 in NC, and William W. Carlisle, b. 1784 in PA, and we knew his grandfather Carlisle was named "James." We now have his McCoy grandparents: Robert and Margaret McCoy. We know the McCoys came from NC, that Robert was probably of Irish descent and that Margaret was a "full-blooded Scotsman." We believe Margaret was widowed by 1798 and that these McCoys and related McDonalds and Angus/Anguish McIntosh were all in Garrard Co., KY by then, and that the Anguish McIntosh who married the widowed Mrs. Margaret McCoy there in 1798 is very likely "ours." We think the McCoys, McDonalds, and Carlisles first met in KY, though they may have met in NC. We are certain these families were very closely related and that these related Carlisles, McCoys, McDonalds, and McIntoshes then migrated to middle TN between 1798 and 1809, settling in Bedford and Coffee Co., in the Beech Grove area.

Hope to hear from anyone interested in these families and migrations.

Does anyone know anything about Mary Camden? She supposedly lived in Coffee County Tn. when she was young. Her fathers name was Benjamen. I don't know when she was born but she had a son born in Tn. in 1851. She also had a daughter who married Jim Bramlett, whose family was from Obion County, Tn. I am trying to find out her daughters name also. Thanks, Rhonda.

William Parker Wives

I am looking for information on the wives of William "Bill" R. PARKER (b) Mar 18, 1861 (d) Oct 30, 1936, and is buried in Hillsboro. William was the son of Ewell & Elizabeth (Lemmons) PARKER.

William’s first wife was Millie DISQUE (b) May 15, 1860 (d) Apr 7, 1912, and their son was Jacob Ewell PARKER. William and Millie married Jan 9, 1879. After divorcing William in 1881, she married John CARLISLE. I am looking for the county/state where Millie was born and died and the location where she was buried.

William’s second wife was Elizabeth ESPY. Their marriage information shows William born in Coffee Co, and Elizabeth born in Cannon Co. They were married in Coffee County on Jun 22, 1882. Elizabeth divorced William May 1888. They had no children that I am aware of. I need all information possible on Elizabeth.

I have found an Elizabeth ESPY who divorced Thomas ESPY in 1880. It appears these two are probably Charles Thomas ESPY and Elizabeth FRAIZER. I’m trying to find out if this is the same Elizabeth that married William???

William’s third wife was Virginia BOULDIN from Tracy City, TN (b) Mar 2, 1853 (d) Oct 25, 1921 and is buried in Hillsboro. I’m not sure when or where they married. They had a girl who died at birth and a son, William Forrest PARKER. I have most of the information on Forrest’s family.

William’s fourth wife was Minnie HARMON. They married on Jun 4, 1924, in Coffee Co. They had a child that died at birth and a son, William Thomas PARKER.

If anyone can shed any information on any of these families, I would greatly appreciate your help!

Thank you!

Gayle Ragland
