Old Court Cases - 1890

I was searching the Court Minutes for Cheatham county for information about the divorce of Ruth Hale, nee Jordan (b: 1846) from George Washington Hale (b: 1830). It should have taken place in the late 1880's to early 1890's. Instead, I found something completely different. There's an entry for October 1890, State vs. Hale, George W., "Assault with intent to commit murder in the first degree and malicious cutting". There's also a charge of "Going Armed".

Does anyone know how I would find out more information about this case? For instance, was he found guilty, against whom was the attempted assault, and so forth?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.
My roots are found as vast as the hills along the Robertson, Cheatham, Davidson, & Montgomery Co. lines.
**#1** Why did he wait till age 35 to marry?? I am searching for the family of William Douglas who married Margarett (Unknown) c1834 (see posted Douglas bible record). All their children are said to have been born and raised in Cheatham Co.. Margarette appears to have died 1859-1869. William moved after and is last found, age 71, 1870 Robertson Co. census. I believe he may have been related to Douglas's formally of the 24th Dist. of Davidson Co. which in part became Cheatham Co..
**#2** Among the children of William & Margarette Douglas was James A. "Jim" Douglas who married Eveline Knight. Eveline was the granddaughter of Allen & Rachel (Paradise) Knight. I believe Rachel to have been the sister of William Paradise noted of the brothers of Paradise Ridge and my 4th G-G-father.
Any one with any information of these families and where they may have came from please contact me.

The only record I can find on her is from a 1900 census and it showed her as still living at home. I can't find anything other than that one census on her or on her parents. If anyone knows anything about the Moore family or Cora Moore, I would greatly appreciate any knowledge you have.

James & Martha B. Jones Cheatham Co. 1860

Hello, I'm looking for info about the family of James & Martha B. Jones of Montgomery Co. TN. The area they lived in on the 1850 census later became part of the 7th district Cheatham Co. TN and is probably in the area of Ashland City, TN today. James was born about 1788 in NC and died 1860-1869, Martha was born about 1790-1798 in NC and died 1870-1879. They had 13 children. I have only been able to find the names of 8. They are: Elizabeth b. 1820, Robert b. 1822, Nancy A. b. 1825 m. M H. Miles, Harriet A. b. 1830 m. T. Gupton, Willie b. 1830, Jacob b. 1833, d. 5 Jan 1862 Co. K 49th TN Inf, Judith A. b. 1835 d. 1868 m. G. Major and Sarah b. 1839 d. after 1879 (listed on census as lunatic).
I'm particularly interested in son Willie. I am unable to find Willie after the 1850 census and I am wondering if this Willie is my 3rd gr gf William "Willie" S. Jones b. 1830-1831. In 1860 "my" Willie was living in the 8th district of Hickman Co. TN with his wife Margaret Ann Knight Jones and children Henry E., Rufus Samuel, William Thomas and Elizabeth Aslee Jones. "My" Willie died in Nov. 1861 at Cumberland Gap, TN as a private in Co. I of the 11th TN Infantry. Any info about any of these folks is greatly appreciated! Thanks, Dave

I'm loking for a clue to ancestor WIlliam Anderson from SC>Davidson CoTN. it is thought that he lived in the Kingston Spring area, at the Mouth of Turnbull Creek. I found a court record ,QUARTERLY COURT LOOSE PAPERS 1857 CHEATHAM CO TN found at rootweb.com/~tncheath/papers2.html that states:

Item 03. State of Tennessee Davidson County. I hereby certify that Wm. J. Carter was at the January term 1854 appointed overseer over the road beginning at the Harpeth Bridge and running up Harpeth River to William Andersons old place on the Hannah’s ford road and that at the April term 1855 the following hands were placed there to work under his direction to wit W. J. Carter, R. B. Dupree ?. April 29th 1857 H. R. Cheatham Clk.
Does anyone know the location of HANNAH's FORD Road? Could it have been in the Kingston Springs area?

I am trying to figure out which of 3 Wm. ANDERSONs living in Davidson/Cheatham Co areas was my ancestor. My Wm. Anderson died in 1850, leaving 2 known sons: Hiram King Anderson who married (1) Susan NEWSOM in 1818 and James Anderson married to Sarah HUGHES 1817. Hiram settled earlier in the century in MadisonCo TN and james eventually settled in Perry Co TN.
Any light that can be shed on the court record or ideas for further research greatly appreicated!
Nancy in Buffalo

I am trying to locate any Bakers in Cheatham. My Baker line was there from 1860 thru at least 1880. I also think a William Baker in about 1910 is also part of this line.
James H Baker and his brother John L Baker are in the civil district 11 census for 1860 and James H is also in 1870 and 1880. !870 shows James to hold a lot of real estate for those times. It would seem likely that a man that has large holdings and several kids would also have descendents still in the area. I have not found any researchable info on any Cheatham Co sites.

Any suggestion as to whom I can contact? Where was district 11?

Thanks

In looking over old genealogy notes, I found mention of a marriage between a George Walker and "Rodie" Jarrett in Cheatham Co. , 19 June 1926. I knew Ms. Jarrett when I was a small child, and always thought she had never married, as she used her Jarrett name always. She and two of her brothers lived near my parents in the Bellsburg community of Dickson Co TN. This marriage was found in Cheatham Co marriages 1897-1927. Can anyone enlighten me further about this?
Thanks,
S. Airhart

Has anyone sorted out the early Smiths around Neptune and Henrietta? I'm trying to find the father of my James G. Smith (1809/1860), buried at the Neptune-Smith family graveyard at Neptune. I've read that he came to Montgomery Co. in 1812 with his father, but have never seen a source for that information.

Early Smiths in the area that are of an age to be his father include:
J. R. Smith (3 infant daughters died bef. 1820, buried at Neptune-Smith)

James Smith (born ca. 1788, died aft. 1850) and wife Sophia. Descendants lived on the Mont Co. side.

William Smith (born ca. 1781, died aft. 1870) - father of Robert W. Smith (1805/1851), one-time owners of the land on which the Neptune-Smith Cemetery sits

I just purchased the entire Cheatham County Marriage Index covering 1856-1897. I would be happy to do lookups. Please provide name of bride or groom and approximate year.

I will post results on this board.

Please note that the index is riddled with mispellings and errors, as this was created from onion paper listings some time ago.

Another random act of kindness for the best community on earth!

Roberta

I found a 1920 Cheatham county Tn Census, showing John Sadler age 48 and Nannie (Nash) Sadler age 23. John died before 1925, I believe. Nannie re-married to Moss Bennett, then died in about 1930-38. John and Nannie's children were split up between family/friends, two sisters sent to the Nashville orphange. I was told by an aunt(the oldest daughter), that John Sadler had a brother named Robert. In Kingston Springs, I found the graves for Robert & Bodia Sadler, they have at least one daughter still living in that town. But she has no info on ancestry.

I am looking for my greatgrandmother, Molly Edgin Reynolds. She was born in Cheatham County Tennessee, according to my grandmother's birth certificate, Mary Phronia Reynolds Fulkerson. She got a birth certificate right before she applied for Social Security.

I am told that Charles Eugene Reynolds is listed on a 1930 census for Webster County, KY as being born in Tennessee as were his mother and father. Charles Eugene is Mary Phronia's brother, as is Arwood and Maydell (spelling?) Reynolds. Charles Eugene is older than my grandmother.

Grandmother was born in 1895-96 in Hopkinsville, KY. She married my Grandfather, Ira Thomas Fulkerson, in 1912 in Henderson, KY.

Any help finding Edgins and Reynolds in Cheatham from about 1880 to 1900 is appreciated.

His parents apparently died when he was a child and he was raised by a bachelor Baptist minister. I do not know if they were related. He went out on his own when only a young teenager and later moved to Clarksville TN. He married Leota Holt. They had several children. He was living and farming in Todd Co KY at the time of his death in 1965. Would really like info on his early life. I was married to one of his grandsons and would like to learn more for my son's sake.

I found them in 1880 but he had remarried. I'm trying to find out who his original wife was. If anyone can help or has other info on the higgins of Cheatham, I'd appreciate it. This Higgins family lived in Texas for a while then returned about 1867-69.
Thanks

Hello,

I am looking for any information on Elizabeth Turner (head of household) or Jane Stewart (occupation: cook) who appear in the 1880 Cheatham County census together in the same household. In this same household is my great, great grandfather Lee Bowling, who was also an orphan. Did Elizabeth take in orphans? Was Jane an orphan? Was there any relationship in the Turner/Stewart/Bowling family? How did Lee end up living with Elizabeth Turner? It has been very difficult to trace my family because my great, great, grandfather was an orphan. Any help, advice, or suggestions are much appreciated!

Lee Bowling

I am in search for any records for Lee Bowling. He was born on November 15, 1868. I believe that he was born in Cheatham County. He married Emma Belle Weakley on June 16, 1889 in Cheatham County. I am looking for the parents or siblings (maybe from the census records). Any information would be most helpful and appreciated! Thanks!
