Albert Hill b. 1835 in Carter Co--Member of 13th TN Cavalry Co. C??

I would be very grateful for any information on ALBERT HILL, b.1835, probably in Carter County TN, the son of John HILL and his 1st wife Sarah BANNING HILL. He may be the same ALBERT HILL who is listed as a member of the 13th TN Cavalry Co. C, but I don't know enough about ALBERT to trace the Civil War records at this stage in my research efforts.

John HILL is born 1802 in Burke Co. NC, the son of Swinfield HILL and a Martha or Mary Lname Unknown (many say WILSON). He marries Sarah BANNING in Burke Co., NC in 1815 and has 5 children in NC before moving to Carter Co. TN around 1832-33 with his family, his father Swinfield HILL, and his brother Absalom and his wife Anney Ingram.

The children of John and Sarah born in NC bet.1821-1831 are Russell B., Stephen, Charles, Elizabeth,& Absalom. After the family's move to Carter Co TN, John and Sarah have 2 more children, Nancy A. (b. 1834) and Albert Hill (b abt 1835).

After the death of his 1st wife, Sarah, around 1843, John HILL marries Elizabeth HAINS in Carter Co. and almost immediately moves to McMinn Co. with several of his children from his 1st marriage, including daughter Nancy who marries a Vanzant and settles in McMinn. ALBERT HILL may be the only child from John's first marriage to stay put in Carter County.

ALBERT HILL is my immediate focus, but I would love to hear from anyone who has any information on John Hill's marriages and children in Burke, Carter,or McMinn Counties. I am happy to share the information I have. John Hill is my GGG-Grandfather.

I have discovered a great tool for finding Carter County History

If you are doing research in Carter County, You may be unaware that many families worked for either Bemberg or North American Rayon, this company put out a news letter which has tons of history of many of the small towns and family histories going back to about 1800, photos and all, the paper/mag. I have seen listed family relationships and I myself found pictures of at least seven family members which I had never seen before...

The paper is called the Watauga Spinnette (sp), I have maybe 20 copies but could always use mmore and I am willing to share what I have.

I have traced my family to Carter Co around 1780s to 1820s., back to an Isaac Russell with three sons: Thomas, Isaac Jr and Abraham. He owned a lot of property from the Laurel fork of the Doe River to and including Dennis Cove. There are amny early Russells in Carter that I have not yet connected to my family, but I'm sure they are.

I would like to hear from anyone reseraching the Russell surname in Carter County. Perhaps we can find that missing piece to connect our families together.

I believe Samuel Patterson who married Catherine Carriger is related and he is there in 1850 with a BISHOP as an apprentice. Elizabeth Campbell Harman 1824 - 1851 TN NC

Trying to break down the proverbial brick wall on the question of who my 3rd g-grandmother's parents might be.
Elizabeth Campbell b. 7/10/1824 TN d. 11/30/1851 Watauga Co., NC.
She married David Tucker Harman abt. 1844. Elizabeth died 8 months after the birth of her fourth child, a daughter, who subsequently died when only 3-1/2 months old. I checked the 1830 census records for Carter, Johnson and Ashe counties, searching for possible Campbell families, in which there was a female of the right age group. Carter county seems most likely, due to the presence of other family names that fit my family heritage, as well as the fact that one of David T. Harman's brothers also married a Carter county resident in 1846. David remarried to Rebecca Elizabeth Clawson, daughter of Robert E. Clawson, who was living in Carter County in 1830. Robert's wife was a Dugger and so was David Harman's mother. There are three Campbell families listed in 1830 that have a daughter in the correct age range, Elisha Campbell, Isaac Campbell and Nathaniel Campbell.
Are there any Campbell researchers on this list that have an Elizabeth Campbell that fits the 1824 birth date? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am in hopes that some kind soul in Carter County can assist me in obtaining a photo of the headstone/grave of Mary McKeehan Patton, my 4th-g-grandmother. My information is that she is buried in the Patton-Simmons Cemetery in Carter County and that she died in 1836. I've just learned that there had been some sort of ceremony, a spinking of gunpowder at her grave, that was conducted in 1999. I have my fingers crossed that someone can help me.

Hello,

I recently discovered that two of my great aunts, Leona Hawkins and Mary Elizabeth Hawkins, married two brothers, Willie Stines and Emerson Stines, in Wise County, VA before relocating to Carter County, TN.

Leona was born in Bell County, KY Aug. 13, 1907; Married Willie 10-03-35; and died in Carter County May 1977.

Mary Elizabeth was born in Bell County, Ky May 30, 1913; Married Emerson 04-06-29; and died in Carter County 02-20-94.

I would particularly like to know if anyone has any information about their parents, William Hawkins ( b. abt 1849 NC; d. 11-30-34 KY), and Abbie Jenkins (B. abt 1877 KY); and their brothers: John M (my grandfather), Albert, and Jake.

Does anyone have any info on Martha? I am trying to see if she could be my relative. My 3rd great grandfather was born in 1801 and was in Carter County in the late 1820's and may have been born there. His name was Whitney Sheffield and married Mary Jane Snider who was from Carter County and born in 1797.
They were married Feb 1820 but location unknown.

Martha's age would fit as a parent to Whitney. Also on 1850 census there is a George who was age 45 which is probably her son. His age would be close to Whitney.

Any help appreciated.

Kitzmiller Cemetery - Hunter Community of Carter County

I'm looking for the Kitzmiller Cemetery somewhere in the Hunter Community of Carter County. I got the following out of a book of Carter County cemeteries published in the 1970's.

"Located on a hill three hundred yards north of the old Carriger Mill and Landing on Watauga River and the mouth of Stoney Creek, Carter County, Tennessee, about four miles up river from Elizabethton, Tennessee."

I have a map that shows an approximate location, but have been unable to locate it as of yet. Does anyone have an idea???

Turner families and migrations to NE Tennessee

Through genetic DNA sampling and comparison to an existing Turner database, I have determined that the Turner family that settled in Carter County, TN and in Scott County, VA migrated to those areas from York County, SC. Another genetic clue stated that there was a Solomon Turner in Carter County, TN who presented with recessive trait of blue eyes (noted from his Civil War military record). A recent conversation with another Turner family member in Greene County, TN revealed that there was a high frequency presentation of blue-eyed Turners in Greene County, TN a trait that was much noted in the Turner families there. It is my assumption that the migration from York County, SC seeded both Greene County, TN and Carter County, TN with its Turner families. My query is that I would like to be contacted via email concerning individuals who may be research the Turner family lines and to share research that may link the distant past between the York County, SC establishment of the Turners and what their migration was from the European continent. I have heard both Gap Creek and Carter's Depot (Watauga) for some of the Gourleys; not sure about the Edens family. And does anyone know the answer to these 2 questions:
1. Is Capt. Thomas Gourley buried in Gap Creek or South Carolina where he died?

Problem Accessing Carter Co. Courthouse Records

As a genealogist born in Carter County but living far away and having family ties to local families such as Campbell, Bradshaw, Deloach, Kite/Kyte, Smith, Malone, Shaw, Glover, May, and Nave, I frequently visit the area to do research. This usually includes visits to the Carter County Courthouse to wade through the old records that contain valuable information to those of us researching our family tree. In search of the Will Books, I initially went to the Clerk of Court Office where they had always been kept and learned that they now reside down the hall in the Clerk & Master Office. I was disturbed to learn when arriving there that no provisions are made for researchers to sit at a table while pouring over material that is not easily read due to the old and faded script handwriting contained in books that are both large and heavy that date back as far as the 1790s. I was forced to stand at the small customer counter, try to decipher old wills, take notes, and deal with the constant flow of customers there to transact business. The situation was not fair to the other customers nor to me. The Register of Deeds Office as well as the Clerk of Court Office have space available for individuals doing record searches, not so with the Clerk & Master Office. I would appreciate some accommodation be made to rectify this matter or either return the old records to their previous location where public access is not hindered. The Elizabethton Star nor the Mayor of the county seem interested in resolving this issue. Perhaps one of you can help make it easier for fellow researchers in the future. Looking For Carter County, TN Cemeteries, I Need Help!!!

I am wondering if someone who lives in Carter County, TN could do me a huge favor and do a few cemetery look-ups for me if anyone doesn't mind going to these places. I am willing to pay by check, money order or by cash if someone would like to help me out.

Does anyone know or has anyone ever heard of the McClain Cemetery, Stout Cemetery and/or Sims Cemetery, all 3 cemeteries are located in Carter County, TN??? These are the three cemeteries that I would like to ask someone to help me out a little more if anyone doesn't mind.

I have several descendants that I am related to at all 3 of these cemeteries, so that's why I'm asking for a little more help.

At the McClain Cemetery, I am looking for Linnie E. Bowman Odom. She married Solomon Odom and she is buried at this cemetery. I have heard stories about them moving from North Carolina to Carter County, TN and living there until their deaths.

At the Stout Cemetery, I am looking for all of the Lunceford's that are buried there. They are sevearl Lunceford's buried here, so I would like the information for the entire family. Especially, Ephraim Lunceford, he married Eliza Bowman.

At the Sims Cemetery, I am looking for William Hulden "Hull" Braswell and his wife Margaret Sophronia Clark. They are both buried at this cemetery.

I am looking for info on any Cannons in Carter Co. My g-g-g grandfather was Elbert F. Cannon. He married Isabella Hardin 5-3-1860 in Carter Co. They had children, Andrew, Julius, David, Mary and Charles. Charles was my g-g-grandfather and moved to Wilkes Co., NC and married Dorcas Parsons. I have been able to find some good info on the family of Isabella Hardin thru another family tree someone has posted on the ancestry worldtree but haven't gotten any info on the Cannons further than Elbert. He was reported to have been born in NC around 1839 but not sure about this. He was in the Civil War (Tenn Volunteers 12th and 13th regiments, Co B from 1863 thru 1865. As far as I know his other children except for Charles remained in TN. I have also heard Charles had a brother known as Ike Cannon (not sure if given name or nickname) that lived in Carter County. They were supposed to have been from the Stony Creek area. Any info would be appreciated.

They are listed on the 1860 Lee Co, VA census as follows:

A kind person went to the Lee County courthouse and looked up the following marriage record for me.
Grooms Name: John S Hammonds (s/read Hampton)
Grooms Age: 21 or 26
Birthplace: Letcher Co, KY
Parents: Wilbum/Wilburn? and P Hampton
Bride: Mary Estep
Brides Age:21
Birthplace: Johnson Co, TN
Parents: Andr J. and J. Estep

I have seen a post listing Andrew Estep's wife as Mary Jane Conley but I have not been able to find any further information.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for descendants of James W. Hennegar. His grand-mother is my ggggrandmother, Delilah Duncan Ashley. He was born in Smyth Co. VA in 1855 and moved to Carter Co. TN about 1902. He died before 1920 and his widow, Laura moved to Ohio to live with daughter, Etta Shelton. (1930 census).

Does anyone know if Lyons Chapel Cemetery has been indexed with names/dates of those buried there? Several family members; Britt, Brewer, Hammer are buried there and I would like to get the dates, etc.

Does anyone know where Campbell Cemetery is located in the Siam Communty? (I believe Siam is what I was told)

Try to find the location of Campbell cemetery. I believe I was told the Siam Community. If it's there that set of directions doesn't help much since the Siam community is quite large.

1860 Tennesse Census shows both brothers in Hawkins Co.

Sion Taylor is my 3rd great grandfather. He married twice that I know of.1850 in Carter Co. to Amanda Jane Johnston. (Don't know what happened to her yet). He married Dianna Miller in 1859 in Hawkins County. 1860 census shows family as: Ellen w.-9 , Catherine-7 Henry j.-3 Jane-2(seems all from his first marriage. Silas(1mo.@the time) was born from the marriage between Diana miller. It was said Sion took off somewhere after the 2nd child(Sarah A.). He supposidly was running away from the law! Someone named epps said they saw him in Colorado remarried to some well to do woman. Margaret was his mother. Am still looking for her husband's name and where both were from. Will update this when obtained.

I am looking for any information on Josie Mae Hughes Glover. She was born July 2, 1895. She married Jacob R. "Jake" Glover. He was born May 1850. Josie was the daughter of Lorena "Laura" C. C. Moody and Albert Hughes. Jake was the son of James Glover and Elizabeth Berry. I "think" Jake died in Carter County as he was living in Milligan College in 1920 and dies before 1930. They had 3 children and they were William bn 1916, Mildred bn 1917 and Mary bn 1919. Anything at all would help. Also, is there a website where Carter County Cemeteries are online?

I am researching the Colboth line in hopes of Connecting it to the Colbreath's that first came to America landing in New Hampshire, I've been given info. that directed me to Tennesee by those of the surname, Likely distant Cousins I am helping and attempting to gain this connection for, I found info. though only a tidbit, Carter County, Tennessee, 1836 Tennesee Civil Districts And Tax Lists, Surnames Included in this Publication, Colboth, only this one referance was what I found, there was no First names, From what I gleem a Colboth payed Taxes in Tennesee in 1836, I could find nothing more on the net so I hope some one can help with a Colboth marriage or any thing else that has taken place in Tennesee around 1836 with a Colboth or any of the other spellings of the surname involved, I think I know where the name connects but there's several Generations missing, If I had names I might gain facts of the Connection of course, thank you.

I'm a volunteer with the Wahoo Family Network and seeking a family member for Olin Jacobs who listed his hometown as Elizabeth, TN and next of kin, his wife, Dorthy Belle Jacobs.

The USS WAHOO was a WWII sub that went missing in 1943 and today a discovery has been made and we wish to share this information with the families of the lost crewmen.
