I have a picture of Joe Buchanan Haley and Bertha L. Davenport Haley's family and unknown others.
We are unsure where the picture was taken but believe it to be in the mid to late 1920's in either Cannon County, TN or Warren County, TN. If you recognize any of these individuals or the location, please email me at the address listed on the picture.

http://web.blomand.net/~jengilliam/haley.jpg

(the photo is large so you may need to click to enlarge it in your browser window)

Thanks!

Jennifer Gilliam

Polly Odom

Looking to see if anyone has anything on Polly Odom. She was the wife of James S. Odom of Cannon County. I know James died in 1911 but I've never seen anything about what happened to Polly or when she died or where she or he was buried.

Also, interested in finding out more about 2 of their children in particular.

Cantrell  (daughter)
Gus      (son)

Both of these were listed in the 1900 Cannon County census but weren't listed in the 1910 Census as being in the household and the number of living children for the mother Polly changed from 6 to 8 during the time between the censuses....Indicating to me that both of these children died. Cantrell would have been 8 to 18 years old and Gus would have 15 to 25 years old between the censuses. If you have any thing to share or need more info please email me at computerwizard1959@gmail.com

Thanks,
Jim

Are there any Hall family researchers out there who could tell me something about Margaret and America Hall? (shown as Menca in another census) I would like to know Margaret's maiden name, and what happened to her, if possible. She is shown as head of house in the 1850 Cannon Co. census, Bradyville, with one daughter age 2, America. In 1860 America/Menca Hall is living in a Duncan/Lemmons household, now age twelve, and apparently orphaned. Anyone know of this little family? Regards, Rebecca

I understand there is a court record for a divorce of William D. Duncan from Frances (Franky) Benson Duncan (Cannon Co. around 1840??) I'm trying to sort out the details of this particular Duncan ancestor, and he seems to have divorced, remarried, went insane and died all in a short space of time. Wondering if this is the same person...
Any help appreciated, Rebecca

I am nearing completion of a study I have been working on for many years of the Bogle descendants who are from the Wilson, Cannon, Rutherford, Warren & DeKalb County areas.
Beginning with William & Mary Bogle PA – NC and their children Samuel & Martha Bogle, I have compiled records on 3900+ descendants and 629 surnames. These records cover the late 1700’s to early 1900’s. My intent is to publish this manuscript in the near future making it available for all Bogle and allied family researchers. It is nearing 400 pages and will be indexed.
If you would like to make sure your line is included feel free to contact me for inclusion in this manuscript. I may already have your information but do have some unidentified families. You may also have additional information to add or if after reviewing your information I may also have additional research to share with you.
Due to time constraints, I am not in the position to answer questions on unidentified ancestors you are trying to find so please don’t ask unless you are sure you are of this group of Bogle’s.

Thank you and happy hunting!

Pat Spradley
patspradley (at) yahoo (dot) com
I am seeking information on the Burnett/Kuykendall families. I found a potential will for A. Burnett (name possibly Angus, Agus, Atchael, August) which was listed in the Tennessee index of Wills and Administrations. The only information in the index was: A. Burnett 1848 ib - 1 - 49. Is there any way to find out who this A. Burnett is before I pay the state to search it for me? Is there any way to get an obituary for this person? Children of my Burnett who may be mentioned; Mary, William, Patrick, Richard, Thomas, Benjamin, James & Sarah. We're trying to find the parents of A. Burnett and wife Nancy Kuykendall. Thank you.

Thank you

I am looking for any info available on the Keaton families that migrated from Patrick Co., VA to Cannon Co., TN area. I also know very little about the Tedders. I have access to the R.A. Dennis manuscripts posted online, but am finding them confusing.
The following is my line starting with my 3g-gparents: Parker Franklin Tedder (b. abt 1838, TN) m. Sarah Annie Keaton; Sarah was d/o Peter A. Keaton & Jane Keaton (m. 1833 in Patrick Co. VA); Jane was d/o Zack Keaton & Susan Elizabeth Adams.
Does anyone have any info on the parents of P.F. Tedder? His son John B. Tedder m. Mary T. Williams (b. Nov 1866, TN) about 1887. Mary T. Williams was d/o Joseph O. Williams and Martha ___. Joseph was s/o Jesse B. Williams and Mary/Polly Duncan.
I have found several Cannon Co. Census entries for families with matching names. Any info on any of these people or their roots would be helpful.
Also, was Peter A. related to the other Keatons before marrying Jane, if so how?

Thanks for any help,
C Leland

My family that I'm researching are the Duncans of Cannon and Coffee Counties. I recently received an old yearbook/autograph book that had belonged to my great aunt Alma Duncan. The inscriptions in it are from 1890, Beech Grove, TN, and one of the easier to read inscriptions is from a schoolmate named 'Autie Paschal'. I found an Auta Paschal living in Bradyville, Cannon County, in the 1880 census. She is listed as niece, living with and Edmond and Bettie Talor (Taylor?). Edmond is listed as 'M.D.' for occupation.

Her inscription reads 'Many glad birthday(s?) may you see And may each bring glad thoughts of me.'

Does anyone know about this young lady? I will also be posting this query on the Coffee County board.
Thanks, Rebecca

Richard S Holt, born in Cannon County, Tn. 1832 , son of Mary L Stevens Holt

http://www.accessgenealogy.com/scripts/data/database.cgi?fil...

RICHARD S. HOLT. It is a pleasure to write the biography of a man of unusual personal merit-the possessor of a combination of gifts so comprehensive that happiness and success in any enterprise is bound to follow the application of his qualities to the solution of almost any reasonable problem in life. It is an unwritten law that the secret of success in life in all individual cases is the common property or heritage of all unfortunates of the human race. It is therefore eminently proper for the historian or delineator of character to review the lives of those individuals who have not only been successful in the various enterprises in which they engaged, but as citizens and neighbors have won the lasting regard of all.
___________________________________________________________

Richard S. Holt, a retired merchant and farmer, and an esteemed citizen of Lead Hill, Arkansas, was born in Cannon County, Tennessee, in 1832. His parents, William H. and Mary L. (Stevens) Holt, were natives of Virginia and Tennessee respectively, the former born in 1799 and the latter in 1802. This estimable couple was married in Tennessee, whither they had gone with their parents when young, and made their home in that State until 1840, when they moved to Ozark County, Missouri, by wagon, being about six weeks on the journey. They improved a farm and resided there until 1849, when the fertile soil of Arkansas tempted them to settle in that State.

They located in Marion County, on a small improved farm on White River, and there the father died in 1860. He had passed his entire life engaged in farming and stockraising, and as an honest, upright, industrious citizen was highly esteemed. He was a lifelong Democrat.

Mr. Holt was one of six sons and five daughters born to Fielding Holt, who was a native of the Old Dominion but an early settler of Cannon County, Tennessee, where his death occurred when he was about eighty-six years of age. Some of his people served in the Revolutionary War. Grandfather Stevens was a native of the Keystone State, but when a young man went to Tennessee, married there and reared his family.

Later in life he removed to Alabama, where he died over fifty years ago. He was also a farmer, and of French origin. He was the father of two sons and two daughters, one of his daughters, the mother of our subject,[Mary L. (Stevens) Holt] dying in Lead Hill in 1882.
The twelve children born to Mr. and Mrs. Holt were named as follows:
1 Fielding resides in Lead Hill;

2 Fannie, deceased, was the wife of William Pumphrey;
3 Sophia died in infancy; William, of Lead Hill;
4 Matilda, deceased, was the wife of Franklin Pumphrey;
5 Richard S., the subject of this sketch;
6 Joseph T. died in his fifth year;
7 James, deceased, enlisted in the Confederate Army and died in the hospital in Little Rock in 1863, when sixteen years of age;
8 Elizabeth, wife of Henry Clark, of Taney County, Missouri;Patrick Henry was her third marriage.[# 1 Wilshire Magness, #2 Tom Terry, ]
9 Sarah, of Lead Hill;
10 and Mary Ann, deceased.
11 Margaret, deceased, was the wife of William Coker;
12 James fought at Prairie Grove and various other places, was captured, but managed to escape, and although so young was a brave and faithful soldier. -

Until eight years of age our subject remained in his native county and then moved with his parents to Missouri and Arkansas. He received but limited educational advantages, but being possessed of a strong mind and an unlimited amount of good common sense, he made his way to the front and is classed among the intelligent men of Boone County. Until twenty-five years of age he remained under the parental roof, but during that time he was farming for himself.

After this he began clerking, continued this for about four years prior to the war, and in the summer of 1861 he enlisted in Company C, Fourteenth Arkansas Volunteer Infantry, Confederate Army, and was made second lieutenant.

He operated in Arkansas and at the expiration of his term reenlisted and was made captain. He participated in the battle of Corinth and soon after went to Tupelo, where he was taken sick. After remaining there for nearly a year he resigned his commission and came home, where he assisted in organizing a company. However it was not needed, as the war closed about that time.

In the year 1867 he married Mrs. Ellen Harris, a native of what is now Putnam County, Tennessee, and the daughter of Wilson and Keziah Wilmoth, natives of Tennessee. Mr. and Mrs. Wilmoth came to what is now Boone County, Arkansas, about 1856, and passed the remainder of their lives there, conducting a farm. Both were Baptists in religion. To Mr. and Mrs. Holt was born one child, James B., who died when four years of age. Our subject has lived within five miles of his father's old place on White River since his boyhood. He farmed for two years after the war and then engaged in merchandising at Lead Hill for about fifteen years. Since then he has carried on farming and stockraising, and is the owner of about 500 acres, being one of the most substantial and best known citizens of the county. He is a member of the A. F. & A. M., Polar Star Lodge No. 224, at Lead Hill, and is a Democrat.

http://www.dar.org/
http://www.accessgenealogy.com/scripts/data/database.cgi?fil...
From: Reminiscent History Of The Ozark Region, pub.
Need Will / Estate Lookup Help (maybe)

Hello to Cannon County!

A bunch of family researchers and I think we might have found our common ancestor in Cannon Co, TN. In 1850, Issac Brooks is with his wife, Ruth (Evans) Brooks in Cannon Co living with their son Issac, Jr. None of us live anywhere remotely close to TN and we're wondering if Issac and Ruth in fact died in Cannon Co. We're wondering if there might be a will for Issac. What we're looking for specifically is to see if Issac mentions a son names Aaron in that will / estate records. Issac was 75 in 1850 and died, well, probably not too long after. That's as close as anyone knows about a death date.
In the book "History of Cannon County Schools", published by Cannon County Historical Society in 1990 there are several pictures of patrons and students of Gassaway School dated 1921 on Dedication Day. I have the picture of the Drama Group dated 1922 that I will be glad to email anyone and share, but I would like to see the pictures, or at least better quality copies of the other pictures from Dedication Day. Does anyone know where I can find these?
Thanks,
Kristi Moffitt
kkcem@blomand.net
A.C. WEBB, Cannon Co. minister
From History of Middle Tennessee Baptists by J.H. GRIME:

Elder A. C. WEBB
The subject of this sketch was born about 1850 --- the exact date is not known. His early life was spent in wickedness and bold defiance of the cause of Christ. In 1879 Elder W. E. Raikes was holding a meeting with Mt. Pleasant Church, in the northern part of Cannon County, Tennessee, when he was powerfully convicted of sin. He soon made a profession and united with this church, and was baptized by Elder W. E. Raikes in August, 1879. On March 12, 1881, he was ordained deacon of his church; and in June 1882, he was licensed to preach. He was ordained by this same church soon after, but date and name of Presbytery not known. In the early nineties he moved his membership to Sycamore Fork Church.

He served as pastor the following churches, viz.: Mt. Pleasant, Dry Creek, Mt. Zion, Cooper’s Chapel, New Hope and Barren Fork.

He was low in stature and exceedingly strong of build. He was a daring, fearless man. He lived in a rough community, where whiskey was constantly sold and drunk. This he opposed with might and main, which made him many bitter enemies among the whiskey element. While assisting a sister-in-law to collect a damage judgment for the murder of her husband, one of these whiskey men shot and killed him. This occurred in 1899, if I remember correctly. As a preacher, he was not systematic, but zealous and original in his statements.

He was laid to rest in the cemetery at Sycamore Fork Church, at the expense of the public, mainly those of his church. He left a wife and large family of children to mourn his loss.
John Caleb Gilley and Margaret Freeman and Mahala Williams

In all of the information that I find, it shows that John Caleb Gilley son of William Peterson and Martha Lemmons Gilley marrried Margaret Freeman 25 Nov. 1864.
John Caleb Gilley was born 19 Oct. 1849. That means that he was 15 years old when he married Margaret.
In the 1870 Cannon Co. TN census John is living with his mother, Martha and is 22 years old. He does not have a wife or any children.
Can anyone explain this to me? I have a hard time believing that John Caleb married at age 15. I further have a hard time believing that he even married Margaret Freeman. And if he did, why was he living with his mother without his wife and children?
He was in the 1880 Metcalfe Co., KY census with wife Mahala and their children Issac, Jesse, Martha, Mary and Freeland.
From info that I have received, it shows that he had children up to 1878 with Margaret Freeman and at the same time had children starting in 1870 with Mahala Williams.
So was he a bigmist? Did he have two wives?
The info that I have says that he had children with Margaret Freeman in 1869, 1871, 1875 and 1878 and at the very same time, he was having children with Mahala Williams in 1870, 1873, 1874 , 1877 and 1879.
Each year that one wife had a child the other wife laid off.
None of this is making any sense to me and I just want to get it straightened out! Info from the Morgan book and the Lewis and Gilley related families. Julie

REED, William E. (b 1880) s/o Adam J. Reed

I need information about a family headed by William E. and Belle Reed (both b abt 1880). In 1930, the couple was living in Rutherford Co., TN with children: Bessie (17), Elvin (12) and Rubie Lee (10). In 1920, they were enumerted in Coffee Co., TN. "Elvin" from 1930 was spelled "Elbern" in 1920. I am not sure which spelling is correct. William E. Reed's WWI Draft Registration (1918) places him and Belle in Cannon Co. I believe William E. Reed was a son of the Adam J. Reed family who was in Cannon Co. in the 1880 census. If so, William's siblings would include Becton(?), Jesse, Chester Arthur and Lila. I need dates of death for William E. and Belle (possibly Nannie Belle) Reed. I would also love to connect with any possible surviving children or grandchildren of William and Belle. Any help tracking this family would be greatly appreciated.

Murder in 1910-1915 Cannon County by an Odom & Willards

Mack Odom (son of Eraster Howard ["Howard"] Odom and Florence Couch) ran wild in the early 1900's. He was buddies with two Willard boys (one was called "Ches"). There was some kind of a fight and the Willard boys and Mack were found guilty of the death of a man. The fight may have taken place in Auburndale and in a saloon. All three ended up around 1910-1915 in a prison around Nashville. There was a write up on it in the Murfressboro newspaper at the time. I am looking for any and all information on this story. My grandfather's gun was involved in the murder. Also, Mack's father committed suicide over the situation. Eraster Howard Odom died by his own hand on 9/10/11 leaving his wife Florence to eventually lose all her money trying to extract Mack from prison. Any help on filling in details to this story will be much appreciated.
Sherrie Sell

Her father was Presley, listed in Smith County census then on to Cannon as Bailey then evolved to Bowly/Boley. It could have been Boley or Bailey all the time...we just know her as Mary E. Boley Sims Lindsey.

We may be the leading Kittrell resource out there and we are free to descendants and spouses and helpful to everybody else.

We have a family tree of nearly 35000 (35K) Kittrell descendants and spouses that is totally private and a MyFamily site that is private and free and available to all Kittrell descendants and spouses.

Just post or e-mail if you fit the bill and want to see thousands of bits of Kittrell info.

The area of the future Gates County of North Carolina is the origin in the USA of the largest Kittrell family and Bertie County, NC was the home of one or more of the next generation, and later they moved on through Craven, Pitt, Granville, Carteret, Davidson and other NC counties as land grew to scarce for the number of male heads of household to feel that they could prosper.

After that period of homesteading in various counties, many in some branches moved to other states including many times over Tennessee, with Sumner appearing to be one of the first stops and many times over Maury County and other coumties including listed alphabetically Anderson, Cannon, Coffee, Davidson, DeKalb, Hamilton, Henry Hickman, Jackson, Knox, Lawrence, Lewis, Loudon, Macon, Marshall, Maury, Meigs, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Perry, Rutherford, Shelby, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale, Wayne, White, Williamson, Wilson and Weakley Counties, among many other, later became the home of many Kittrells of one line or another or multiple lines.

Anyone with Kittrell in their lore please write or post or both!

Anyone with Kittrell in any Tennessee document is welcome to write and to share info on an area rich in Kittrells, complicated to delineate from which Kittrell they descend and of which we have a large knowledge. We lose track of some of the female Kittrell lines consistently in every generation and would like to add them back to the family tree.

The name has many spellings through the centuries in public record including as examples only Kittrell, Kittrel, Kitrel, Kitrell, Kitterlin, Kitterill, Kitterell,..., leterally dozens or literally dozens depending how well you spell such things.

We will assist anyone on Kittrell matters (for free of course other than the wealth we get from both of us sharing some of what we know).

And we will be most pleased to find more missing links broken from our tree due to distance and change of generations to those who barely know a whit of their Kittrell kin.

William Parker Wives

I am looking for information on the wives of William "Bill" R. PARKER (b) Mar 18, 1861 (d) Oct 30, 1936, and is buried in Hillsboro. William was the son of Ewell & Elizabeth (Lemmons) PARKER.

William’s first wife was Millie DISQUE (b) May 15, 1860 (d) Apr 7, 1912, and their son was Jacob Ewell PARKER. William and Millie married Jan 9, 1879. After divorcing William in 1881, she married John CARLISLE. I am looking for the county/state where Millie was born and died and the location where she was buried.

William’s second wife was Elizabeth ESPY. Their marriage information shows William born in Coffee Co, and Elizabeth born in Cannon Co. They were married in Coffee County on Jun 22, 1882. Elizabeth divorced William May 1888. They had no children that I am aware of. I need all information possible on Elizabeth.

I have found an Elizabeth ESPY who divorced Thomas ESPY in 1880. It appears these two are probably Charles Thomas ESPY and Elizabeth FRAIZER. I’m trying to find out if this is the same Elizabeth that married William???

William’s third wife was Virginia BOULDIN from Tracy City, TN (b) Mar 2, 1853 (d) Oct 25, 1921 and is buried in Hillsboro. I’m not sure when or where they married. They had a girl who died at birth and a son, William Forrest PARKER. I have most of the information on Forrest’s family.

William’s fourth wife was Minnie HARMON. They married on Jun 4, 1924, in Coffee Co. They had a child that died at birth and a son, William Thomas PARKER.

If anyone can shed any information on any of these families, I would greatly appreciate your help!

Thank you!

Gayle Ragland
Cannon Courier 20 Mar 1908
Short Mountain
Mrs. Martha Wood wife of W. W. Wood departed from this life December 28, 1908 at the age of 78 years, 6 months and 26 days. She was a member of the Christian Church the greater part of her life. She leaves 10 children, 1 sister and many grand children to mourn her departure. She has escaped all the sorrow of this life and is now enjoying the blessings of those of whom the Saviour says of such is the Kingdom of Heaven. Notwithstanding the fact that we know our loss was her eternal gain, it was hard to give her up to; grief was not confined to her home and relatives, but all who knew her loved her dearly and were filled with sadness at the news of her death. She has slipped away to a world better and brighter than this, a world where vacant seats are never known in that home circle. A sweet and precious another was called from the fields of sorrow and death to be transplanted in the paradise of God to bloom in the everlasting beauty and love while we realize that we shall never see her face in this world again yet we hope to meet her in the sweet beyond. To those who are so lonely at home is her husband and daughters, Ada and Ida. To them I would say weep not for she is not lost but gone before so dry your tears and prepare to meet dear mother where parting is unknown and all is joy and happiness forever.
Funeral services were conducted by Bro. L.L. Melton, where her body was put away on the beautiful hill at the home. Written by her daughter, Gertrude Daniel.
