Maryville Times, (Blount Co. TN) Wednesday, December 7, 1892:

"Sydney Wortham, while leading a band of the good citizens of Jellico to clean out the last disorderly house in that town, was shot and almost instantly killed by Frank McMillan, who was in the house at the time. The murderer was taken to Jacksboro and turned loose to the great indignation of the Jellico citizens. The Jellico Advance speaks out against the wickedness of that place in plain, bold language."

If you have old photos of the Mitchell family, I would like to get some of them. My 2nd great grandfather Henry Mitchell is the group I am interested in the most. However, I do believe that an Aden Mitchell is Henry's brother. Henry was married to Margaret Kelley. They had children named Mary Elizabeth Mitchell (Davis & Haney), George Mitchell, Sam Mitchell, Ira David Mitchell, Herman Pettibone Mitchell, Frank Mitchell, and Lucy Bell Mitchell (Lingo & Muncier). Pettibone, Sam, Ira, and Frank moved to Campbell county, TN. Henry and Margaret eventually moved to Campbell county where Henry died. Mary & Lucy died in Greene, TN. Sam, Pettibone, and Ira moved to Anderson county where they died.

In my search of my paternal grandmother - Emma Bell I have found that her father's - father John Darty "Dority" - father and "mother" were Wiley and Bettie J."Jeanette" ( either know where they were born). The odd thing is that both name are attached to a 1900 census record of a William Darty in Turnersburg, N. Carolina.

I am looking for information leading to the children of the chidren of John Darty Sr. of Henderson,Cherokee, and Anderson counties of Texas. The children names are listed ( in order) as: Thomas "Tom", Johnnie "John" Jr., Mary Jeanette- Sneed (had 22 children, most of them named with initials such as S.V, M.T, etc, possibly lived in Colorado at some point), and Burk ( this is the correct spelling).
Emma Bell would not have shown up in any of the Census until 1920(she would have been 10 or 11 years old.
Anyone having good clues to the family of Darty "Darrity" "Dorrity" clan please reply. Thank you.

Need help in finding 17th Subdivision Campbell County, TN on 1850 Census

I am researching my Williams kin and would like to be able to find their location on a map. Around 1860 some of them moved to Georgia, and some moved to Missouri. The 1850 Campbell TN Census shows them at house #250 in the 17th Subdivision. Can somebody help me match up the general vicinity of this location onto a present day map? What are the boundaries? What present day town/community is it close to? (I can do a Google Map, etc.). Thanks in advance.

Edward Williams

Is anyone familiar with the Stephen Smith who signed the marriage bond for Julian Reed and Hattie Hood? The marriage took place in Campbell Co., TN on Oct. 5, 1911. But Julian Reed (b 1842) resided in Whitley Co., KY both before and after the marriage. I'm not sure where Hattie Hood, who was about 15 years younger, lived prior to the marriage. What was the personal connection, if any, between Stephen Smith and this couple?

Thomas Family lookup or any help!! please!

I need some help finding information on a Frank and Elizabeth Thomas.

First, this is what I have my great grandfather George Thomas, was married in Breathitt Couny, Ky to Lucinda Raleigh. He was married in 1917, at the age of 19, so he would have been born abt 1898. His parents are listed as Frank and Elizabeth Thomas, on the marriage Cert. I wasnt finding alot of info, until I Found a death certificate for Georges son, which stated that his father, George Thomas was born in Jellico, TN. So then I looked up Frank and Elizabeth Thomas in Campbell County, TN and I havent had much luck at all. I have not Idea of their ages, all I know is that they had a son George, born abt 1898, in Jellico.

Any information would be appreciated. Also, maybe there are records that someone has access to that that are not available at Ancesty.com

Thanks for any help,
Christa
My stepmother's grandfather, and earliest known Dison ancestor, was Frank W.Dison, who could neither read nor write, and therefore the variation in his last name. He is on the 1920, and 1930 census, in Campbell Co.,Tennessee, and my stepmother says that she believes that he died in about 1935. I am trying to find an obituary,or other record of his death, in order to obtain some clue as to his parents or siblings. He was born about 1863, his first wife was Viena Freeman. His second wife, whom he married between 1920 and 1930, appears to have had the first name Janie.

Isaac Marlow(e) obituary - marriage lookup or index advice

If anyone has access to a 1948 La Follette paper, I am trying to get a copy of an obituary for Isaac White (or Wyatt) Marlow(e) who died 3 September 1948 in La Follette, Campbell, TN. I'd be happy to pay for copies.

Isaac was the son of Thomas Marlow and Profanes White. He moved to Callahan Co, TX to work on the Texas & Pacific Railroad there, then moved to Dallas, TX. Before 1910 he and his family all moved to Seattle and many of his daughters married while they were there. Most of the family then moved to New Jersey. By 1930 Isaac was back in Campbell County.

In the 1930 census Isaac is remarried to Elsie (who is MUCH younger -- 26 to his 62) and there is a stepdaughter -- Hattie E. Adkins -- in the household, age 7. Can someone tell me where I can find an index of Campbell Co marriages after 1900?

FYI Some of the information I have about the Marlow family is here (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dorner/marlow.htm). I haven't updated it in quite a while since I took a long break from genealogy research.

Thanks for your help!
Hello everyone

I am working with the Daughters of Union Vets on a national grave registration project. I volunteered to work on Campbell County since everyone else was doing Knox and Anderson and I didn't want our county to be left out.

I have went through some cemetery books to get the ones that are documented but I am sure that all of them are not in the books, or I might have missed them.

If anyone knows of any Union or Confederate graves that might not be listed in any of the books or has union ancesters that you want to include please let me know. I don't want to miss any. From what I understand the stones that are in poor condition will be replaced. Most of the ones I have found so far are in supprisingly good shape a few needs to be cleaned really good, but other than that they look good.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

I have run into a brick wall for several years with Bettie Carroll, my great grandmother and I am hoping someone will help me find her final resting place as well as her death date.
Bettie was born January 1874 in either Union Co. or Campbell Co, TN and married John Thomas "Tom" Carroll in Union Co. on August 13, 1897. They had children Elias Garfield, Walter Roscoe (my grandfather), Melborne and Henderson. In 1930 Census this family were living in Harlan, Kentucky as they were coal miners by trade. After 1930 they moved back to Campbell Co, TN and according to my relatives, Bettie died in LaFollette, Campbell Co. TN, but I could not find her death date nor where she was buried. Also her son Elias Garfield died sometimes after 1930 in LaFollette, Campbell Co., TN no one knew when he died or where he was buried either.

Thank you in advance,
Linda J.

It was announced last night at the monthly meeting of the trustees of our perpetual care fund that TVA families would have thirty days after a notice was run in "the paper" to prove legal ownership of our lots or the perputual care trustees would seize and sell them. Of course, that is illegal, but all that it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

Baker's Forge Memorial was established in 1934 for Norris Reservior families as a re-internemnt when Norris Lake was formed. Space was allocated for future burials on family plots. The perpetual care fund was not established for more than forty years after the establishment of the cemetery. Over the past thirty years, Norris Reservior families have poured our donations in to this fund. That it would someday morph it to a monster that would turn on it's own benefactors was unforeseeable

Looking for information on Mattison "Matt" Carroll (sometimes spelled Carrrel) married to Biddie (Caroline) Holt around 1865. They lived in Campbell Co., and I've found them in the 1910, 1900, and 1880 censuses. Biddie's twin sister Lottie (Charlotte) lived with them and also their mother, Eda (sometimes spelled Edy) Holt. Matt and Biddie's children were: Frank, James, John, Sousan C., Josie A., Margaret. Frank (my ggrandfather) married Lizzie Smith around 1909.

Lottie, Biddie and Eda were from Kentucky, but I haven't been able to find anything else on them.

Mattison (in the 1910 census it's spelled Madison) was born around 1830, Biddie and Lottie around 1846, Eda around 1822. Any information greatly appreciated!

Carroll Arch Coffey (1918-1986) was married to Livia Gladson (1915-1959) in Hamblen County in 1935. Carroll was coowner of a grocery store with his brother-in-law Heiskell Gladson. Carroll and Livia are buried in the Woodlawn Cem. in LaFollette. I would like to find out if Livia and Carroll had children and if so, make a contact--or even get an obituary. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TSLA does not have the paper for the time period I'm seeking, so I'm hoping maybe someone who lives in Campbell County might be able to assist me and check with the Historical Society for a copy of an obituary.

Sarah passed away November 25, 1906 ~ more than likely in Jellico, TN.

I will glady reimburse for any costs incurred.

Thanks!
Donna (Brock) Strong
Hamilton, Ohio

Looking for info on George Pleasant JONES (1860-1954) and his son Tolly Napolean Jones (1881-1952) who lived in Caryville at least during the 1930 census. Tolly's WWI draft registration card shows that he lived in Caryville at that time as well. I know that Tolly worked in the coal mines for awhile, as he died of black lung disease. I believe his father worked the mines for awhile as well, as a mining accident was supposed to have left him with a permanent stoop.

George Pleasant was married to Nancy Elizabeth DAVIS (1862-?), and Tolly Napolean was married to Julia ADKINS (1888-1980).

Any help on the father/son or their wives would be greatly appreciated.
