Hi, I know exactly what house your speaking of. I live within one mile from that house. I was told the story of a doctor living there during the war and he would not give medical release to a young man who wanted to enlist. The story went on that the young man being enraged at the doctor not giving him medical clearance shot him in the front yard. That is simply what I was told by a local gentleman I spoke with that lived across the road in another historical house. If this is the right place, it is for sale now.Looks in much need of TLC.

My parents were both from Fincastle, Mary Ruth Wilhoit and Foster Richardson. My aunt, Letetia Richardson married John Brown who had a general store and lived on the Old Middleboro Road. I havent been down there for 40 years . From looking at Google Earth it looks like the area has been developed into residential from farmland. If anyone knows about the Brown place, please let me know if it is still there. Thanks

Aramantha Collins married John Henderson Smtih on 29 Oct 1849 in Marshall County, MS. On the same day, in the same place, Tranquilla (Tranquility) Collins married John K. Campbell. Does anyone have proof that these Collins young ladies were sisters? Despite hours and hours of research, and the help of several talented genealogical researchers, we have been unable to find out who the parents of either of these people were. This is what I have been able to prove.

John Henderson Smith and his wife Aramantha lived in Marshall County, MS in 1850 and 1860 according to census records. They later moved to Mifflin (Henderson, later renamed Chester County), TN in the late 1860s and 1870s. This couple had 10 children. Aramantha "Ann" Smith died on yellow fever in 1878 at the age of 44 when her youngest child was only 3 years old. John Smith died in 1889. They were buried in Old Mifflin Cemetery, Mifflin, Chester County, TN.

I can find no definite proof of where John K. Campbell, his wife, Tranquilla, and daughter moved after the 1850 census.

Can anyone please help me with my Campbell, Smith, and Collins family ancestors? Thank you in advance for helping me

I'm researching my Smith family, of which I've found records in Campbell/Rhea/Bledsoe, and Sequatchie counties. William Benjamin Smith was my great-great grandfather. I've found census records from each of these counties for he and my great-grandfather, Walter William Smith. I know that on William's death certificate his father's name is listed as William B. Smith, but I can't find any further information. I know William Benjamin was born 4/17/1871 in Tennessee and died 6/5/1952 in Dayton, TN. I also have birth/death information for his wife Annie Hall Smith. I'm trying to research my family as far back as I can and at this point I'm stuck. I realize there were many Smith families in this area at that time, and I'm hoping that someone can help me figure out which one is mine. Thanks for your help.

No, Eli Cooper married Polly Gross, daughter of Martha Gross. Eli and Polly had several children, including Andrew Cooper (1856-1918), the last child being born abot 1867. Polly Gross Cooper died before 1870 (she is not shown in the household of Eli) when Andrew was young, and he moved in with Polly's brother Amon Gross, Amon's wife and children, and Martha Gross, who was Andrew's grandmother, Polly and Amon's mother. Polly and Amon were among 11 children of Martha and Isaac Gross.
Hope this helps.

Yes, the Ivys are a very interesting family. I'm not sure any of the Ivy ancestors were slaves, but the early Iveys who moved back and forth between Campbell county and Bledsoe county in the early to mid-1800's WERE originally enumerated as "Free Colored Persons". And this was way before slavery was abolished. As time went on, these families were enumerated more often an mulatto, and eventually, many times, white. My family had the usual myth of the Cherokee princess. :) And yes, I think, I think you're right; it DOES still strike a nerve with a lot of people, unfortunately.

Have you researched Mulengeons in the Carolinas and East Tennessee? There's some great information out there, including a lot of conflicting theories! Just fascinating.

Forgive me if this is a silly question, but just trying to clarify here - so Andrew here was the nephew of Amon Gross (Amon Gross (1845-1899, son of Isaac Gross and Martha Patsey Whitman, husband of Elizabeth Cooper)?

Then who was Andrew's father? I have the above Amon Gross on a tree, but I don't have him with any siblings.

Some mysteries are solved - Eli's wife was Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Gross. She died either during or shortly after the birth of her youngest child, about 1866-1870. Their son, my paternal grandfather, Andrew, moved in with his grandmother, Martha Gross, and Uncle Amon, who was a preacher, and his wife and children. Amon Gross died in 1899, around the time Andrew moved to Arkansas, where he married my grandmother, Ada Dunn.
Pieces of the puzzles are falling into place.

Its just crazy that the death certificates say Patterson and Bratcher I just had to add that thought.... If they only knew back then that we would be trying to find out who Margaret was.
Vesta Ivey was my Grandfather's sister years ago I came in contact with her daughter she sent me pictures and a lot of information. I tried contacting her thru snail mail and email with the question of Margaret. Her email was invalid and she never wrote back when I mailed her a letter. She had Mary Jane Housley Iveys bible Mary Jane was Robert Franklin's wife who was Margaret's son I thought for sure she would shed some light on this mystery. I don't think she passed away a year ago she called my Aunt but my Aunt didn't keep her number I think she may of moved ans changed her email. At one point I asked her about the family showing as mulatto in census records. I may of hit a nerve I'm not sure. When my Grandfather was alive he said he was part lumbee which I believe but I also believe somewhere in the family there my of been involvement with slaves, I could care less but some people do. I just want to know my heritage and where my family came from.
Someday the mystery will be solved.

That's amazing even if its conflicting information you have gotten further than I have. I have done searches looking for death records or any records that would show Margaret's maiden name. I have tried finding out who her parents are.... nothing.
I have always believed Margaret Patterson and Margaret Bratcher are the same person, someday proof will show up. I won't give up until I do, I have spent 10 years trying to find Margaret's information.
I know all these records are only as accurate as the person giving the information. So frustrating. I will
keep digging. If I find anything else I will let you know Thanks so much for the information :)
More confusion but something is better than nothing, eventually Margaret's name and family will be found...lol. I'm going to save the death record you have for Nancy.
Take care keep in touch if you find anything and I'll do the same.
Kimberly
Hi again, Kimberly---After we first corresponded, I noodled around a bit, and came up with more information. Unfortunately, it's still CONFLICTING information!

I found the death certificate for Robert and Margaret Ivy's daughter, Nancy Jane Riggs. You can see it in my tree; father is listed as Robert Ivy, and mother as Peggy PATTERSON. I also found a marriage record for Annis Ivy, one of Robert and Margaret's younger children. She lists father as Robert Ivy, and mother as Maggie BRATCHER. So now we have more conflicting records. For awhile, I thought there may be TWO wives named Margaret/Maggie/Peggy, but here doesn't seem to be any pattern (like earlier children saying mom was Bratcher, and later children saying mom was Patterson). My best guess is lack of knowledge; many, many death certificates have false information, especially when the person was very old---just not that many people left who remembered. It just is very curious that there are at least TWO references to Margaret Patterson (Nancy Jane's as well as Robert Franklin Ivy's death certificates).

So . . . I guess we keep on searching!
I figured I wouldn't find a marriage record I've tried they do date back to 1850 when Margaret and Robert were married I sent for it a few years ago and they couldn't find a record in Campbell County which means they were married in a different county. Who know her name you could very well be right when I was told she was married before Robert it didn't mane sense because of her age. If I knew her death date I could try and get her death certificate but the record I have I've been told isn't for her... I'm sure i have the right family I just like proof like I'm sure everyone does. Thanks again

My IVEYs of Campbell Co., TN are connected to the BRATCHERs and the "Peggy" you see listed IS "Margaret." In past times, "Peggy" was a nickname for "Margaret."

My gg-grandmother was Sarah Elizabeth IVEY, who married James BROCK.

Is there any connection between us?

Donna (Brock) Strong

With dates as far back as you are seeeking, it is most unlikely that you will find marriage records for Maragret and Robert, which has not surfaced, let alone finding another of a prior marriage. I doubt she was married before, looking at the ages in their first census. If I were a betting woman, I would say Patterson is either her maiden name, or either her materinal grandparents name. Perhaps she was from a family of all daughters and had the foresight of knowing her family name could not continue, Of course Peggy is a nickname for Margaret hence the certificate. Sorry you are did not find what you were looking for.

Yes it is helpful I have records of Houston Ivey but never had the name John connected to him... interesting. I also don't have the record of John Absolem and Sarah Bratcher that's interesting as well. My problem is Roberts wife Margaret I have their sons death certificate (Robert married to Mary Jane Housley my ggrandoarents) which names Margaret as Margaret Patterson Ivy. Another researcher has Rachel Ivys Death certificate ( Roberts sister) it names Margaret as Peggy Bratcher I haven't been able to find who her parents are or where the name Patterson comes from. All the other researchers that trace the same Ivy line have Margaret as a Bratcher I've been told she was married before Robert but am unable to find proof of any of it.
Thank you for the help :)

Sarah and James (and even William Wilson) are my 4-G grandparents on my mother's side. I have been trying to research James' family for quite awhile now as we have no information about him other than his marriage to Sarah and his daughter Docia. In my research, I continue to see a James Rains that died in 1865 in Nashville, TN and is buried there. However, I have not been able to confirm that the James, in Nashville, is the same as the one in my tree. I am hoping to have a breakthrough soon as I am working with another ancestry member who also has a James Rains in her tree and she has the names of his entire family. Her James is the one that died in 1865 in Nashville. Hopefully, I will have some confirmed information soon.
