I am looking for names of the wife and children of Leaming Hawkins BRADLEY who was born on 10 Oct 1808 in Litchfield, Connecticut. He is in the Barbour Collection of Connecticut Town Records, with his parents shown as Horace and Hannah Bradley. Horace Bradley married Hannah HAWKINS on 7 Feb 1808 in Litchfield. Barbour does not show a marriage for Leaming Hawkins Bradley. However, in the 1840 Census for Washington, Litchfield, Connecticut, Leaming H. Bradley is recorded with a household including 2 males under 5, 1 male 15 and under 20, 1 male 30 and under 40 [himself], 1 female under 5 and 1 female 20 and under 30 [likely his wife]. He does not appear in census records after 1840. I would also appreciate information on when he died and where he is buried. Thank you.

I AM NOT POSITIVE, BUT I BELIEVE HIS FATHER'S NAME WAS HARRY BRADLEY. I BELIEVE THEY CAME FROM NORTHERN MISSISSIPPI OR SOUTHERN TENNESSEE. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT THERE WERE SEVERAL OTHER BROTHERS AND SEVERAL SISTERS. MY GRANDFATHER'S BIRTHDATE IS SEPT. 8, 1889 AND HIS DEATH DATE IS AUGUST 23, 1927. I LOST MY FATHER IN AUGUST, ACTUALLY AUGUST 23, 2007 AND DID NOT REALIZE IT IS THE SAME MONTH AND DAY THAT IS FATHER PASSED AWAY. She has to be there somewhere. Aunt Jackie was a sly one. Jackie Graham was an Alias, however she carried a SS card in that name. Her real name was Gladys Odell Chavis. She may have used other names in her lifetime, However "Jackie Graham" is how she is listed in the SS Death Index. Please help. I have run out of ideas.

Does anyone have any info on a Zedrick Lawson b abt 1830? He is listed in the 1850 Bradley Co TN census, 26th subdivision, page 230B with wife Margaret age 28 and infant son James age 11 months

Zedrick Lawson fought in the Civil War, Union side, 8th TN Infantry company A. It was noted that he was living in district 4 Bradley Co TN when he enlisted in 1861, but I can't find him there in the 1860 census.

Any help greatly appreciated. This is not my family, I am just helping a distant cousin.

I have an ancestor from Maine who was in Tennessee from at least 1874-1877. He had a daughter born in adjacent Ooltewah, James County on 7 Apr 1874, and then a son born in Cleveland on 16 Jul 1877. In later censuses he is listed as a farmer and a carpenter, but we had heard he was an engineer, and may have even helped with building railroads.

Does anyone know what was going on in this region in that time period that he may have been involved in? (I'm guessing it may be related to reconstruction?) His name was Benjamin F. Stevens. Previously, his children were born in St. Augustine, Florida (1869-1871), so he was down south for quite some time. He was back in Maine by 1880.

Is it hard to get a copy of a birth certificate for these two children (Isabel G. and Guy H.)? It might list his occupation.

Rhoda Richards died intestate (without a will) however there was a probate file due to notes owed to the deceased and bills of the deceased.

Rhoda Richards died February 12, 1865 according to documents in the file. An Administrator’s Bond was filed January 23, 1866 by H. M. Richards, Inez Brown, and Christopher Brookman. H. M. Richards filed documents stating that the value of the estate was not more than $400. There were notes owed:

1. Henry M. Richards dated 10/9/1854 for $68.00
2. Ezekiel Monroe Atkinson (Rhoda’s son-in-law) dated 9/1/1854 for $40.00
3. William Richards (not identified but assumed to be Rhoda’s son whom she was living with in the 1860 census) dated 9/4/1854 for $165.00

In a handwritten note in the court file, H. M. Richards promised to come in some Saturday and try to settle up “my mother’s estate” but stated that he first needed to make a trip to Crawford County. William Richards remained in Crawford County so it would appear he would be making the trip to talk to William about the note.

A Summons was issued for H. M. Richards to appear in Court regarding the settlement of the estate of Rhoda Richards. There is a note in the file that he was ill and unable to appear.

On March 13, 1876 a Petition was filed by Richard Richards asking that he be granted Letters of Administration to replace H. M. Richards because he had not collected a $165 Note of William Richards. An Administrator’s Oath was signed March 13, 1876 by Richard Richards and Ezekiel Atkinson.

On March 18, 1879 Richard Richards filed papers stating “after pursuing the matter and investigating the matter under legal advice found it impracticable to make my collection thereof.”

Based on information in the probate file, census records, and information received from Richards researchers, it appears that Henry & Rhoda Richards’ family included at least seven children. The last name of “Welsh” or “Welch” came from family group sheets at Brehm Library in Mt. Vernon, Illinois and also from a living family member. I have not attempted to prove Rhoda’s maiden name.

Henry RICHARDS was born about 1784 in Maryland, died about 1850. He married Rhoda WELSH about 1820 probably in Tennessee. Rhoda was born about 1793 in Tennessee and died February 12, 1865 in Jefferson County Illinois.
1. Richard Richards born about 1814 Tennessee, married Louisa HIGHSMITH October 11, 1838, Crawford Co., IL.
2. Rebecca Richards born about 1816 married Joseph B. MORRISON. Rebecca probably died before 1860 in Tennessee. Her children were brought to Illinois by her relatives
3. William Richards born about 1820 Tennessee, married Matilda MORRISON born about 1823 Tennessee. William & Matilda moved to Crawford Co., IL.
4. Mary Richards born about 1822 Tennessee, died 1860-1866 Crawford Co., IL married Jacob Higgins February 9, 1854, Crawford Co., IL.
5 Nancy Jane Richards, born May 26, 1822 Tennessee; died July 29, 1884 in Illinois m. (1) Mr. PRICE, m. (2) Ezekiel M. ATKINSON, probably about 1854 in Bradley Co., TN.
6. James Richards, b. about 1826 Tennessee, married Phebe, moved to Lawrence Co., IL
7. Henry Madison Richards, born July 8, 1831, Charleston, Tennessee, died October 18, 1885, Jefferson Co., IL, m. Amanda Melvina ATKINSON (sister of Ezekiel Atkinson) December 22, 1852 Bradley County, Tennessee.

There may be more but these were the obvious ones who appear together in the census in Bradley Co., TN and then in Crawford, Lawrence, & Jefferson Counties in Illinois.

This is not my family, just did the research for others because these folks lived in my neighborhood, long, long ago.

James York- Martha Goodner

I'm looking for the parents of James York (~1820-<1860) He was married to Martha Goodner and the couple lived in Bradley County in the 1840s and 1850s. They had daughters Setira(~1840) Caroline(~1845) Nancy(1848) Martha(~1852) and Charlotta Delsenia (1851-1927) who married William Newton McKinney. The 1850 US census shows James being born in North Carolina, but that is the only clue I have to his origins. There was an Abram York living in the same 2nd district of Bradley County as James York. Both Abram York and Martha Goodner York were listed as "Union Persons" in the 1866 "History of the Rebellion in Bradley County, East Tennessee" by J. S. Hurlburt.

When I visit Bradley County to do genealogy research, I would like to see if I can find the deed for the farm of my ggg-grandfather, John Reed b. 1798. Also, I would like to see if he had a will and probate records for his estate, if he had one. I am great with on-line genealogy, but must confess, I am terrible at ground work. Can someone direct me through this? Also, if I have census records for him in Bradley County for 1860, 1870, 1880, is there any way to find out what part of the county he lived in? The name of the districts, etc, are meaningless to me. Thanks.

I am looking for info on a Melinda/Malinda/Milinda S. LAWSON, b abt 1818 in TN, probably vicinity of McMinn County, TN. The S. may stand for SHELTON since her marriage license states Melinda/Malinda SHELTON - have seen the spelling both ways on the McMinn Marriages List. Melinda/Malinda SHELTON married Charles D. MARTIN on July 18, 1839 in McMinn County, TN.

Melinda/Malinda's parents are said to have been James and Elizabeth LAWSON -- James may have been a middle name and Elizabeth could have been called Nancy. Both parents allegedly born in TN or that part of North Carolina that became Tennessee.

William "Buck" LAWSON said to have been b . 1790-1796 is said to have been Melinda/Malinda's uncle -- and could possibly be her father. Have an undocumented record showing William "Buck" LAWSON married Elizabeth SHELTON 1814 in Bucombe/Madison County, NC. In 1840 he is still in Washington County and married to Martha UNKNOWN born abt 1815 with three unknown females under the age of 5.

By 1850 he has moved on to Bradley County, Tennessee and that is were he spent the rest of his life.

Looking for information on John Petty family that was listed in 1860 Census in Bradley County. Household was John (51), Martha (21), Rash (19), James (16), Joseph (14), Angeline (12) & Mary (9). I believe they are possibly the father and siblings of John R. Petty that married Margaret Thomas in Whitfield Co., GA in 1857 and was living in McMinn County, TN in 1860. In 1870, John & Margaret were living in Logan Co., KY and there was a Joseph Petty living near them who could have been the Joseph in this Bradley County family. Any information would be appreciated.

Still searching for info on J R Rodgers, found in marriages in Bradley County. J R married Catherine Hancock 1866. Found Catherine Hancock in 1870 census with 2 sons, Will and Julius Rogers. No J R listed with them. 1872 Catherine married J. W. Rash and left for Crockett County in W TN. No other info on J R at all. Any help would be appreciated.

My GGparents were John Chadwick brn NC?,and Mary Chadwick brn abt 1831 NC. John died unk,and Mary died after 1910 place unk.
Gparents were John Chadwick brn abt 1852/1960 Ga,died 1917 Bell Co KY,and Nancy M Bond brn abt 1868 Ky,died 1943 Harlan Co KY. In 1900 Anderson Co TN Mary was in the household of my Gfather John along with her 2 Gsons(John's nephews)Robert Chadwick age 18,and Oliver Chadwick age 17.
I believe that Oliver went to Cleveland TN abt 1905,and married a Belle Randolph Gates/Cates?

Ezekiel Bates and son, Thomas Leroy Bates, home in Bradley Co

Ezekiel Bates was one of the earliest settlers in Bradley Co and listed as one of the wealthiest in the 1862 tax census. He died in 1864 in a Federal prison while in the CSA. His son, Thomas Leroy Bates, was sheriff of Bradley Co. in the 1850's. TL Bates was married first to Maryline Culton and then to Cynthia McCarty. I am seeking info about whether or not the house of Ezekiel Bates is still standing in the Tasso area. TL's obituary said he died in 1916 in his father's home where he grew up and where the first terms of the circuit court of Bradley County were held. He "saw the first rails of the East Tenn & Virginia RR laid through his father's farm". Any information will be appreciated.

I was told today that Minerva Justice Fletcher _____? (b. 12-8-1867 d. abt 1961) and her daughter Alice ______, are buried beside each other in Lee Cemetary, MacDonald, TN.

I am not sure what last name they may have had at the time, as Minerva had children from several men. Just skimming the cemetary trascription at http://www.tngenweb.org/bradley/leecem.htm
it doesn't show any possible matches.

Does anyone know if this transcription is complete?

Social Security Death Index has Robert K. McLucas died July 23, 2004, his last known residence was Cleveland, Bradley Co., Tennessee

If possible I'd like to get obituaries for Robert McLucas and for Claude McLucas. Claude died in March 1985 (I don't have a complete date of death for him, but his last known address was Cleveland, Bradley Co., Tennessee.

Does anyone know if Claude McLucas' mother was Charlotte (DAY) McLucas?

My great grand father was William Perry Alexander Griffin he was born Sep 20,1863 in Tennessee and raised in Georgia Fulton Co. he run a way in he's teen to Sulphur Spring/Miller Grove, Hopkins County,Texas and died there Jan 04, 1946. Father initials W. M. A. Griffin are and William Perry Alexander Griffin had two sister that i know of. If you have Info. on my line of Griffin's in Tennessee or Georgia with these initials who had two girls and a boy W. P. A. Griffin Please late me Konw. Help Help!!!!!!!! James Broomfield [Brumfield] 1840 census

I need to contact someone who can look up James Broomfield in the personal property taxes for Bradley Co. for about a ten year period, 1835-1845. I believe this is the same James Broomfield who was in Botetourt Co. VA in 1836 and returned there about 1844. (He may also be in the deed book in Bradley but it is more likely he was a renter.) One of his children, William Sampson, was born in TN and in the 1840 census for Bradley Co. he is living two doors from his father William.
