Joan, did you ever get any replies to this post you made in 2003?
I only recently began reading the message boards and noticed yours since my ggg-grandfather was David C Cowan from Bradley Co, TN and had a daughter (Mary E) in about 1853. She died in 1891 and her headstone said she was still a Cowan so I don't think she was ever married.
I have not been able to make a positive connection to David C's father but some others in the family believe it was one of the Andrew Cowans there in the 1850 and 1860 Census'.
Mary A (wife of John N) was the only Mary in the 1850 Census, and John and Mary, Andrew P, and (my) David C all had a child named Mary in the 1860 Census.

Looking for any information on a Lizzie Godfrey maiden name was Jones. Lizzie was married to Traynor Cleveland Godfrey (aka Cleve) November 9, 1908 and they had nine sons. Cleve passed away March 24, 1950 in Cleveland, Bradley County. I believe Lizzie died between 1956 and 1960. I live in South Carolina and I have tried everything I can think of to locate my great grandmother and her side of the family with no luck without traveling to Tennessee. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Donna Godfrey Williamson

Hello,

I am hoping you can help me with some information regarding my family. I have been able to locate 1862 tax assessment list for Bradley County, Tn for my family E.F. Dawn (Edward Dawn), Dist 12, 130 acres mf pg 37. I am trying to find more specifically his actual location of residence. I believe his son Samuel may have also lived at the same location with his family. I don't know if this stayed in the family or if he eventually sold all his property, etc. Thank you so much for you help~ Jen

I have been trying to info on William C Kilgore. The 1900 Census states he was in living in Louisiana with his wife Ida Mae Dempsey and there children. The 1910 puts him in Arkansas. He was born between 1863-1870 is my guess. He states that he & both parents were born in Tennesse. He was married around 1896 location unknown. I am assuming he died between 1914-1920. I found his wife and children in Arkansas 1920 Census, shows her as widow and their last child was born in 1913. That is how I figured his possible death year. ny thread at all would sure be appreciated.

1946 Commencement program for Central High School

In going through some old materials from a deceased friend, I found a program for the Thirtieth Annual Commencement, 1946, Central High School of Bradley County. Interesting to see in the list of "Boys," asterisks beside the names of those "In Service." All the class members are listed. I have no need for it and wonder if there is anyone who would like to have it.

I also found an Order of Worship for the Big Spring Baptist Church, Samuel Melton, Pastor, from 17 Nov 1946. I hate to throw away papers like this, so I hope there is someone who could use them
Dear Sir,

My name is Matt Lea and I am the 4th great grandson of Daniel McJunkin. I would be very interested in the bible for which you speak. Do you have any pictures of the artifact or would you be willing to sell it? Daniel married Jane Chesney and they had a son, Samuel McJunkin, who was my 3rd great grandfather. My family are very proud of the rich American Revolutionary history our family has in service to the United States. Thank you.

Found only a death record of a Lorin E Griggs but no one or information to collaborate if this is the same person. I believe he would have had a father that had passed around 1970 +/- a year or two. I Just would like to find relatives of the one i am looking for.

V/r,
A lost relative....

Things are very busy now, but will settle down in a couple of weeks and we can talk specifics after I look through my research. In the meantime, I am happy to say that we have found a match! I currently live in Lakeland, FL, but basically my entire family still lives in Cleveland (Bradley County), TN including one of Mark's granddaughters who is still living. She is my great aunt and I talk to her every couple of weeks. She is about 85 years old. I knew my grandmother had told me (when she was alive) that part of the family was from California.

I'm in California. I believe Mark Shields to be my 2G Grandfather. My grandmother wrote in her bible that her father, Frank Shields, was the son of Mark E. Shields and Martha Plank. Frank was born born in 1890. Her bible lists the following as siblings to Frank: Charley, Zona, Harrison, Mae, Myrtle, M.E., Chassie, Bruce, and Ina.

I found a marrige record for Mark E. Shields and Martha Matthews for 1 Dec 1895 in Bradley County, TN. That would indicate that Frank and Charley were born before this marriage and that Zona, who's birthday was given as 13 Mar 1896, was born three months after the marriage.

The 1900 census for Bradley County, TN shows Mark, Martha, and 3 year old Harrison as the only members of this houshold. This census states that Martha was 27 and the mother of 4 children, with only 3 alive at the time of the census. I have never been able to find Martha Plank Shields, Frank, Charley, or Zona in any census records for 1900. Either Charley or Zona must have died before this census in 1900. I have been trying to find out what happened to Martha Plank. Was she divorced from Mark or did she die? Also, what happened to Frank, Charley and Zona? Do you have any answers to these questions?

I have not been able to determine who Mark's parents were. I have not found him in the 1880 census.

Where are you located?

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1930 is the last available census at this time.

Facts you should know about the early census records -
All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.
NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces +++
