Trying to find where Thomas SHIRLEY and his wife, Charity are buried. He was born about 1815 in South Carolina and may have died before 1850 in Bledsoe County. She was born about 1819 in North Carolina. Unknown when or where she died. Surname is sometimes spelled SHERLEY or SHURLEY.

Would also be interested in knowing burial location for two of their sons - Thomas H SHIRLEY, born about 1844; and Jesse Alexander SHIRLEY, born about 1849. Both were born in Bledsoe County. Both are enumerated in 1850 Bledsoe County census.

Thanks in advance.

Robert in Arkansas
My Grandfather, William Henry Johnson was born July 1881 in Nashville, TN. This is the information on his South Carolina Death Certificate.

He was born after the 1880 census, the 1890 census doesn't exist. The closest match I can find to him is the 1900 Bledsoe County Census that shows a William Johnson, born 02/1881 residing as a boarder in the dwelling of George Dyer and his wife Addie. A few houses down is listed a dwelling for Edgar Johnson.

Does anyone have any information on these Johnson's? Are they related? Is Addie Dyer a sister?

Any help with this search would be greatly appreciated.

Richard Johnson
South Carolina
From the headstone in Rainey Dill cemetery there is not
a middle initial of R. Does anyone know who John's father
might be? It appears that it could be William Rainey and
Chloe from NC. They often bought and sold property on the same dates. John was also a witness to a land purchase of William's along with a William Rainey Jr. Any information on this family would be appreciated.
(This forty acres of land noted in the previous post was originally in White Co and was bought by John Burden on June 24 1814 and sold to Nichodemus Keith on Dec 24 1829 by Jesse Oden, administrator of John Burden for 160.00. The sale was registered on this date but not recorded until Dec 29 1832 in McNairy Co TN in Book A pg 69.) Then the land was sold from Nichodemus Keith to Issac Hicks in 1830 for 50.00. I believe that the Hicks have a connection to the extended Hackworth family but do not have the time to dig that out. Please note that Austin Hackworth Jr witnessed this deed. Augustus Austin Hackworth Sr, born ca 1746-47, died 1846, was married to Ruth Keith (Keeth, as his grandchildren and great grandchildren indicated on the Indian Claims for Reimbursement Applications listed in the Guion Miller Rolls of 1906-8). Augustus Austin was in Bedford Co Va when he entered the Rev War, later lived in Old Buncomb Co NC for several years before moving to Knox and Anderson Co TN before settling in Marion Co TN, next to Bledsoe Co. He and Ruth are buried in the Condra Cemetery in Marion Co TN. He and Ruth named two of their sons Nichodemus and Gabriel, after whom I believe to be her brothers, Nichodemus of TX and Gabriel Keith, who remained in Old Buncomb Co NC. They also named a son Samuel and there was a Samuel Keith in the Battle of Point Pleasant with Augustus Austin Hackworth who lived in several of the same areas in which are found the others. In 1815 0n a Bledsoe Co Tn petition are listed David, Ely, Nichodemus, James, Stephen and another James Keith. There are several deeds, and other court records in some of the above mentioned counties, which show ties between these families. In my research, I find that often families of different surnames moved together to different area and intermarried. I could go on but don't have time to write a book this morning. Hopefully this will give someone some leads that they would be willing to share with me. PS. Ruth Keeth is sometimes listed as Mary Ruth Keeth but I have found no documentation of that. I would be happy to hear from anyone with further info on these families. Thank you. Shirley Landen

I found this at http://genealogytrails.com/tenn/revwarsoldiers.html

JOHN HALE

John Hale applied for Revolutionary pension in 1833 while living in Bledsoe County, Tenn. He was born in Bedford County. Va. in 1753 or 1754. He enlisted in Bedford County. Va.. in 1776. He volunteered in Capt. Harry Bluford's Company. Lieut. John Frields, Ensign Abram Sharp. They marched to the Cherokee Country and were in the battle of Long Island. He was discharged and returned home. He went to school and re-enlisted under Capt. Charles Watkins. He had 24 months' service in all. His discharge was burned in Blount County in 1803. After the War he moved to Wythe County, Va.. then to Greene County, Tenn.. to Washington County, Tenn., to Blount County, Tenn. and then to Bledsoe County about 1813.

I think my gg grandfather John Hale was born about 1815 in Wyhte County, VA. He married Sarah Fawbush (born 1822 in Sullivan Tenn.) about 1840.
Hello … In the Little Hopewell Church Cemetery I counted approximately 26 unknown gravesites that were marked with just a small mountain stone or the marker was to weathered to read any longer, and while there, I also did not find a headstone for a/any Lucy Caroline Hoge Cooley or a headstone or grave for Homer Cooley … so not sure where your information came from, my cemetery list is at the bottom of the page, along with the photo’s I took, please re-check my list by scrolling down the page to the bottom.
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tnsequat/littlehopewell.ht...

I have logged and listed almost 50 cemeteries in this area and if there is a grave marker for an individual, I will document their name and dates as I see it on their marker. I do not prove or disprove their existence nor do I research who their ancestors were nor who their descendants are. Always check the original source material to develop your own conclusions.

All the best in your family research.
I've enlisted the help of many volunteers including the ones at www.findagrave.com to find Lucy Caroline Hoge Cooley's tombstone and none can be found at Little Hopewell. She's my ggmother and the family is still looking for her headstone (if any). She died 1 month after giving birth to my grandmother.

There's also no evidence that Homer Cooley was ever born much less a headstone at Little Hopewell. My father says he doesn't exist.

If anyone can find either of these headstones or a record of their burial, please let me know. Thank you!

I was working under the assumption Emberson Hancock (same page as S E Hancock in the 1900 census) was the father, but after finding them in 1880 Slick Ford, Wayne Co., KY, it turns out he wasn't in their household in 1880. However, if you look in Slick Ford, Wayne Co., KY for HANDCOCK, you will see a David and Susie HANDCOCK with several kids, one possibly "your" Samuel. He's listed as 8. Could be yours, I don't know. I'm not related, just thought I'd search the census for you.

Also David it the father of older Gilbreaths in the Area, Hugh and Andrew.
I was told by another researcher that he had a first wife and that Elizabeth was his last wife, they think her name was Hixson and the Dyes in this area have connections to the Hixson line, like they were friends etc.
Also Sarah was married in 1855 and she said she was married in Bledsoe Co, TN, but it could have been Sequatchie since the borders changed all the time, Alfreds family lived in MCMinn Co, TN See 1850 MCMinn John and Ailey Dye.
Burton Dye is listed on the 1861 Sequatchie Tax list that is Alfred, he went by Burton.

There were children from this marriage--Nancy Elizabeth Dowlen bn 1846 and Mary/ Martha Dowlen bn abt 1844.

Nancy E Dowlen is believed to have married John H(arrison) Hixson and had several children.

Martha/Mary is believed to have married a ?? Alexander.

Joseph Hale is believed to have married a Lydia Dickens/Deakins.

Frances/Fanny Hale is believed to have married a William Richard King.

Thank you in advance for any assistance in more info on this group of people.

My great-grandfather was Edgar Elmore Houge, who is the E. E. in that 1880 census. The entire family moved to Montgomery County, TN sometime around 1890. Nathaniel died on Jan 5, 1892 and is buried in Macedonia Cemetery there. Angeline was actually Eliza Angeline. In the 1900 census in Montgomery County she is listed as Ann. She died in 1910. I've seen her last name as Marrs and Morris. I'm not sure which is correct.

My great-grandmother was Elizabeth Hogue, born about 1872, apparently from another branch of the Hogue family. Have you run across any information on her in your research?

Who was his first wife and mother to his children?
You're saying that it wasn't the Elizabeth who was in the 1850 census with daughter Sarah. Her age was given as 43 which would have made her born 1807. The 1830 and 1840 census both say she was between 40 and 50. Let's assume she was 40 in 1830 and 50 in 1840. That would have given us a birth date of 1790. Not the same as our Elizabeth in the 1850 census born in 1807. I see why you feel she is a second wife. Maybe a Hixon I still don't know that either. If you have the name of the first wife I'll note it. I'll keep an eye out for other info on the family.
Fred

I have some limited information on Ambrose Ambers Agee and Elizabeth Lusk. I know they moved to Dent County MO in the late 1830's-early 1840's. I found their daughter, Mary E. "Polly" Agee Cox in the 1840 Crawford County MO (Dent Co was created in 1851 from Crawford and Shannon Counties) census with spouse George Washington Cox and their 1st 2 children. My information says GW and Polly were married in Crawford Co in abt 1839, but first child was supposed to have been born 1838 in Meigs Co TN. Any idea where/when they were married? I'm at a dead end with GW - no parents!

Searching for information on Cooper family living in Bledsoe County on the 1850 Census. Mother is Delilah and children are William, Mary, Sarah A., Elizabeth, James L., Eliza, and John. Sarah married Jesse Colvard and stayed in Bledsoe County, Elizabeth married a Tennyson and then a Hunter from Warren County. Does anyone have any information on the rest of the children or any information on the Father (perhaps Pleasant Cooper?). Delilah's maiden name could be Watkins or perhaps Walker.

Don't worry about the dates not matching up to family stories. Just use them as a guideline but not as concrete information.

Case in point: My Great Grandmother was born 2 March 1895. Proven by a delayed birth certificate. She was the oldest child. I looked everywhere for a marriage certificate for her parents. I finally found it. They got married 24 December 1895. Proven by a marriage record. Her parents got married after she was born. She was nearly a year old when they got married.

I was like you. I thought they would have gotten married before. Using the birth date as a guideline, look a little before and after. Since I have started using this trick, I have brought down no telling how many brick walls. It seems alot of my family decided to start up housekeeping before saying the "I do's".

Hope this helps!
Joetta

I am searching for information regarding Samuel Emerson Hancock, born Jan 1874 in Kentucky (1900 Census). His parents were also born in Kentucky. His wife was Ollie possibly Johnson they had 5 children by the 1910 census Annie, Willie, Cora, Frank & Ames. Samuel and Ollie along with Ross are buried in Rigsby Cemetery, in Bledsoe County, Tennessee. I can not find Samuel in the 1880 census records to link him to his parents either in Tenn or Kentucky.
Re: Bledsoe County Books: Smith and Lamb

The book Lamb and Allied Families by James L. Mohon, page 280 gives William Harrison Smith's parents as William and Lizabeth. In the 1860 Bledsoe County census, household 477-477 Harrison Smith, age 10, is in household of William and Betsey Smith. Next door, hh 478, are William Smith, Sr., age 77, and Polly, age 74. In 1870 Bledsoe, Dist 9, Roberson's Crossroads, hh #96-96, Harrison Smith, age 17 is in household of William and Lizebeth, Sr. Smith. In Bledsoe County 1850, hh#122-122 are William and Mary Smith, both born NC, and family.I believe this is your family, and that William, Sr. and Polly/Mary are the grandparents of
Harrison. Hope this will help. There are no Bledsoe County marriage records prior to 1908. Sara Goins
