John Anderson’s will is on file in Benton County and is dated 13 March 1859. It reads: “In the name of God Amen I John Anderson make this my last will and testament. It is my will for my wife Elizabeth Anderson to have all of my real Estate and personality her life time and then at her death it is my will for all of the estate to be equally divided between Catherine Swindle Mariam Swindle G.C. Anderson, Isaac Anderson, J.C. Anderson Elizabeth Swindle & Enoch Anderson’s part to be Equally divided between John R. Anderson Cainilee Anderson heirs of Enoch Anderson and Seney Anderson, my daughter to have fifty dollars more than any of the above named children also my just debts and funeral expenses to be paid out of my Estate and Isaac Anderson executor of this will This 13 day of March AD 1859.” Signed John Anderson and witnessed by W.W. Davidson and M. Edwards. This will is on page 376 of the Benton County, Tennessee Will Book. Does anyone know which Swindle his daughter Elizabeth married. Was she the Elisabeth Swindol wife of Seth Swindol of Mississippi (1860)? I know Miriam married Thomas Swindle and Catherine Married his borther William E. Swindle. Seth and Nathan were their other two brothers. Nathan did have children (1840s) so maybe she married him?
If anybody can help, I need it. lol My great grandfather was Randsom Alexander Allen, his father is suppose to be from Big Sandy, Benton Co., Tn, his name is David Jackson Allen, I am guessing at a date of birth in the 1850's or 1860's. His father was David Allen, also from Big Sandy. Thanks
I'm looking for info. on one of James Elisha and Sarah (Rushing) Herrin's daughters. James Elisha Herrin died in 1855 Benton Co., Tn. Elizabeth's name is listed in her father's court papers, from Benton Co., as the wife of Larkin Rice. These papers mention that the family was in Tx. Elizabeth's husband was deceased at the time that the papers were filed. Some researchers have his name as Labon Rice but the paper I have says Larkin Rice. I don't have the entire file for James Elisha Herrin so maybe some of the other papers does say Labon.

Does anyone know anything about her such as who her children were, her death date, app. birth date, did she remarry after Larkin/Laben die, etc. ANYTHING!

Any info. would be greatly appreciated!

Patricia in Illinois

Sayby, Sherwood Short, & William Thompson and many others-

The county of Humphreys in the State of Tennessee and John Ruminers Residing in Humphreys County and same State do certify that we are well acquainted with John Swindle who has sworn to and subscribed the above declaration that we believe him to be seventy three years of age and that he is Reputed and believed in the neighborhood where he Resides to have been a Soldier of the Revolution and that we concur in that opinion. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid
his
Test D. P. Hudson Clerk Burton Coats
mark

John Ruminer

This John Swindle is thought to be the son of William Swindle (Sr.) of Hyde County, North Carolina. His Revolutionary War Pension file gives his age a 73 in 1833 making his birth year about 1760. It is likely Asa Swindle was his son as he is listed on the 1836 tax Records of Benton County, Tennessee and appears to have inherited John’s 40 acres.

The 1820 census of Humphreys County, Tennessee includes:

John Swindle and in his household were one male 10-16 years of age, one male over 45 years of age, one female 10-16 years of age and one female over 45 years of age. Note:

The 1830 census of Humphreys County, Tennessee includes:

John Swindle and in his household were one male 20-30 years of age and one male 70-8- years of age.

This part of Humphreys County became part of Benton County. John Swindle lived near John Anderson who is known to have lived at Chalk Level. This son must have been Asa Swindle.

The Hyde County Historical and Genealogical Society of North Carolina has a publication called High Tides. The issue of High Tides seen as Volume VIII, Fall 1987, Number 2 includes a section titled “The Swindell Family”. Hyde County, North Carolina had all the Swindle/Swindell families included in the 1790 census of North Carolina except for two: Parker Swindell in Edenton District of Currituck County and a Samuel Swindell in the Wilmington District of Bladen County.

This article also states: “John, Son of William (Sr.) We believe that William Swindell (Sr.)’s son, John Swindell, is the person who in 1832 applied for a pension in Humphreys County, Tennessee.” And also “It is most likely that Asa Swindell inherited his 40 acres as he is so listed in the 1836 tax records of Benton County.”

The article also states “William Swindell (Sr.), was the son of John Swindell (Sr.), was married to Dina _____. We have been unable to identify Dina’s parents. And “On 5 March 1746/47, John Swindell, Sr. was granted a patent to his 900 acre tract in Hyde County.” John Swindell had “five sons – William, Josiah, Caleb, John (Jr.) and Zedekiah Swindell”.

Christopher Swindell was a son of Caleb Swindell (Sr.). Christopher and his descendants moved to White County, Tennessee by 1820, as did John Swindle, the Revolutionary War Veteran. John Swindle would have been a cousin to Christopher. John moved from White County on into Humphrey’s/Benton County by the 1820 census where “he entered a 40-acre tract in surveyor’s district 12, range 7, section 3, on 25 May 1825. This cleared as a land grant on 27 June 1827. In 1834 he declared he had lived in Humphreys County “for the space of twelve years past”.
Does anyone have a listing for the graves in White Cemetery, which was part of the Benton Co. Cemetery Project referenced at this link? http://www.tngenweb.org/benton/cemeterycompleted.html#white

I cannot locate the grave of my GGG grandmother (Agnes Elvira White). I reckon that she died sometime between 1880 and 1900.

She was widowed between 1865 and 1870 and raised four children in Benton County, near Holladay. All four children and families moved to Texas in 1903 - 1906.

I have a request to check a marriage. I have an Agnes Elvira White, listed as widowed in 1880, aged 41. I am positive she remarried in the 1880's in Benton County. Her son, my GG granddad moved to Texas in 1906 and I have a reference from my Great-granddad about going to grandma and grandpa's mill.

She is listed differently on each census. 1860 - Alvira White; 1870 - Alvira; 1880 - Agnes E. White. After 1880, she appears to drop off the face of the planet. I do know she did not move to Texas with her children and their families.

Seeking information on David Beasley & wife Lucy Rasbury/Rasberry

I'm researching the Beasley surname and I'm trying to locate information on the David Beasley family. David Beasley is said to have married Lucy or Lacy Rasbury or Rasberry in Benton Co, TN 4 Nov 1839.

David Beasley was the son of William Beasley & Mary Ann Fehr. David was born about 1809 probably in KY. The Beasley family migrated in and out of KY and TN.

I would like to learn the descendants of this family and where they migrated to. Your help is appreciated.

LOOKING FOR PROOF OF PARENTS FOR SARAH ANN (HERRIN) MCGILL!!

I am in hopes someone will have the proof I need as to who the parents were of my line Sarah Ann "Annie" (Herrin) McGill.

Sarah Ann born Apr 1815 Franklin Co., Tn. Two sources states birthdate Apr 1815 and another 1820. She lived and died in Benton Co. and is buried in Rushings Creek. She married James C. McGill (date unknown)prior to 1831.

James Elisha and Sarah (Rushing) Herrin had a daughter Sopheen who married James McGill according to everyone I've been in contact with working on James and Sarah Herrin's family. No one has any other info. on this Sopheen and James McGill.

I believe that my Sarah Ann (Herrin) McGill is the same person as James Elisha and Sarah Herrin's daughter Sopheen but I don't have any proof.

Does anyone have land records, will, probate or anything that they will share with me that shows James Elisha and Sarah Herrin's children's names so that I could see if the name Sopheen is being read wrong??? Could this be a nickname?? Do any of the documents found mention anything more about the James McGill that Sopheen married??

Its also said that James Elisha and Sarah had a daughter named Sarah who died at the age of 18. Any proof of this??

Can anyone help me with this puzzle?? I'd appreciate any help you can provide! I'd really like to obtain copies of the documents that names James Elisha and Sarah's children if someone would be so kind as to share them with me!!!!!!

Patricia

patriciastaley4722@sbcglobal.net

Cooper's, Brewer's, Alsup's-

I do not know if this will help anyone but here is the info I have in my head right now. Starling Alsup 2-24-1828 – 11-1868 – Selah Jane 11-24-1827 – 9-3-1887- In some census books they have Starling listed as Sterling.
These were my mother's GGgrandparents I believe.
My mom was born to Leonard Alsup who was married to Lennie Lowell Foster(1898). They had Virginia Willean Alsup 1919.(my mother) Everyone knew her as Willean. She graduated from Big Sandy HS in 1935 or 36.
Leonard died in 1921.
Miss Lowell as she was always known remarried Leonard's cousin, Conklin(sp) Barnes.  {I would like to know if anyone knows the cemetary where Lennie Lowell Cooper Alsup Barnes Foster is buried. All of the relatives that knew that are gone now.}

Lowell Cooper was the daughter of Liddy Ann Brewer (was it really Lydia?) and of ? Cooper. I think his name was Will.
They had 5 boys and Lowell. Will, Ben, Ulys(the family pronounced it Eulys), and the other 2 I can't remember.
My grandmother, Miss Lowell was the only one I knew. She lived in Big Sandy in town by the RR tracks and had a grape arbor beside the house. I remember Uncle Ben and his sweet wife Vivian. They had a daughter Dody, who had two daughter's. One daughter was named Celeste. I do not know the girls last names.
Sheesh with all the holes in my memory I should have written all of this down years ago.
Well, obviously there is a lot more work for me on this site. Any additional information would be very welcome. This seems to be more important as the generations die away. It's good to feel the infinite connection. I hope to pass this on to my children.
Thanks for your time.
Felicia-Willean's youngest girl

Can anyone tell me if there is anyway to find a death certificate for Arrena Isabella Nowell Earp? She was born in Benton county in 1855 (daughter of Cullen Nowell). She married John W. Earp (b. 1859) on 1-5-1879. Their children were Dora and Johnie Belle Earp. She died June 1889. She
was born, lived, had a family and died at age 34. I have tried
to find a record of her death and the only thing I have found was an "In Remembrance" of Mrs. J.W. Earp card sent to me
by Brian Smith from Camden, TN. Can someone please help me find her? She was my great grandmother.

Has anyone heard stories of Jesse or Frank James playing the fiddle for barn dances in the Benton County area? He rented the W.H. Link farm in Humphreys County in 1877 under the name J.D. Howard. This request regards an old family story. I need corroboration that one of them played the fiddle. Any stories about his activities in the area would be greatly appreciated. This may have been in old newspaper clippings. My relatives were Garrett’s and lived on their farm between Bruceton and Buena Vista. My Great Grandfather, Jeremiah Garrett, also owned the Mill at Garrettsburg.I am also looking for pictures of Garrettsburg.Thank you very much. Don Ayer

I believe they were his children but no proof yet.
On August 5, 1849 the heirs at law of James Daniels entered a 125 acres land grant #632 in Range 8, Section 7 near the NWC of James Stagner, Sr.
Mary A. He died about 1893/1895 in MISSOURI

4. He has either uncles or brothers named JOHN & JAMES DOWDY.

The family story is this: (I wouldn't swear it to be fact)
My Dowdy family were from Tennessee & they were moonshiners. One day someone stole the still & some of the Dowdy's went after whoever stole it & shot him. The person shot was supposedly a lawman. After this the Dowdy's left Tennessee.

If anyone knows of this family or any can provide any info I would love to hear from you.
Thanks.
Angie in Missouri

Cordelia Sarah Odle.... HELP

the name could be Sarah Cordelia Odle. She is the daughter of Richard Odle and Lucretia Dove Tippitt. She had a sister Rhoda Odle who married Robert C Thomas. they died very young of Typhoid (in 27 Mar 1886 & 03 Sep 1885 respectively). The thomas' had children who were supposedly raised by Sarah ( who never married). I cant confirm or deny this. Sarah died in 1924 and not sure where buried. She is in the 1850, 1870, 1880 benton Co, tn census wtih her immediate family... however I can only find her again in the 1900 Benton co, tn census... I dont actually have access to view the form. Can anyone give me more insite to this situation or info on this family. I am Robert and Rhoda's GG Granddaughter.
