JOHN N. BLACKWELL is a son of James Blackwell, and both are native Tennesseeans. The Former was born October 5, 1828. The mother’s maiden name was Delilia Darnall; she was a native of Illinois. John N. has farmed for himself since attaining his twenty-first year. He is a self-made man, and has accumulated a comfortable competency by his unaided efforts. In 1853 he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Wood, a native of Bedford County, and daughter of W. M. and E. Wood. This union resulted in eleven children. The following are those who are living: William N., John A., Thomas J., Samantha A. (Mrs. C. A. Shaw), Samuel J. and Charity D. Mr. Blackwell is an honest and respected citizen. He was a soldier in the late war, enlisting in Company G, Thirty-second Regiment Tennessee Infantry, in 1862. He was captured at Tullahoma in 1864 and took the oath of allegiance and gave bond for his appearance. He is, politically, a Democrat.

In the 1820 census of Bedford Co, Tn., Zach. Gorden is listed just above a Leonard Crosser. Both have families. Then later in Weakley Co., Tn., Crosser is shown in the 1850 Census with a Mary Gorden living with his household. No Zach. Gorden family is in Weakley Co. I welcome any information concerning the Zachariah Gorden (Gordon) family. Mary Gordon was my gr. grandmother. I know she married Eli Walker in 1862 in Obion Co. They lived in Hickman Co., Ky, and when she was widowed she moved to Dukedom, Weakley Co.in the 1880s. I would love to know more about Mary and her mother and father. Thanks, Grace Hall Upshaw

John Dee Richie was born in Richmond, Tennessee, on 7 March 1874. George Richie, who was born in Missouri, is his father.

John Dee had a brother William A. Richie and two sisters I know of (but I only have John Dee's sisters listed as Mrs. so-and-so, without their first names....this coming from John Dee's obit and that is how they listed their names.)

Can someone in Bedford County, Tennessee, lookup John Dee's birth certificate to see if it lists George's middle name and who George's wife was for me? Would also love to know John Dee's sisters' names, too. Any info gained from George's death certificate or marriage license would be appreciated, if found, too....though I'm not sure if he married or died in Bedford County, Tennessee or not.

If either show up in the census, would like to know any info about them, such as George's approx year of birth.

A great big thanks, in advance, to anyone who can help me with this. I'll pass the favor on to someone else, whenever I can.

Bill

There are 2 females listed with John on the 1830 Bedford Co.; 1 under 5 and the other between 5 and 10. I believe that my great great grandmother, Margaret Barrett (wife of A. S.

I am looking for information (parents, siblings, etc.) on Isaac Wood b. 1784 NC. I believe him to be the Isaac Wood in Bedford Co., TN in 1820 (120010-401100) and in Haywood Co., TN in 1830, then in Johnson Co., AR in 1840 (10000001-2012201) and in Yell Co., AR in 1850 where he died 1857/1858. I believe one of his daughters to be Elizabeth Wood b. 1818 TN who married Constantine Ladd in AR about 1845. Johnson Co., AR land transactions in the mid-1830's also mention a Logan Mingo Wood as well as neighbor Isaac Wood. Elizabeth named two of her sons Isaac Wood Ladd and Logan Milton Ladd so it would seem both are related. I have no other information on Logan Mingo Wood--I never see mention of him again. I do have some of the names of Isaac Wood's other children, some born in Tennessee. Census records indicate that Isaac might have been married at least twice, possibly the last time in Arkansas to an Anna Denton who died before 1850.

Hoping someone might know of Isaac and/or Logan. Thank you!
Janet in CA
I am looking for a date of the marriage of my Great Grandmother Nancy Ellen Freeman to Lonzo (or Alonzo) Reynolds. I think Nancy Ellen went by Ellie and was the daughter of Henry "Frank" Freeman and Harriett Williams. Lonzo was the son of Amzira Anthony Reynolds (or Runnels) and Clarissa Ann Reavis. My guess is that they married in 1901 in Bedford County where they all lived.

I am also trying to find the marriage of my Grandparents, Amzira Reynolds who married Pearl Dimple Johnson in the early 1920's. Amzira was from Bedford County while Pearl Johnson was from Smith County and was the daughter of Sidney Johnson and Clodia Wyatt.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

My husband's G.Grandfather, James A. Thompson 1st married Emily Reed, they divorced & 2nd wife was Martha Ventruess. She had 2 children, Moody & Dana Ventruess. I assume Martha
div. or husband died & she took back her maiden name. I would like to know more on the Ventruess family. Martha's parents were John & Letetia Ventruess, they are buried, along with Martha, James Thompson, Moody, Dana & Ella Trollinger. They are all buried side by side at Willow Mt.
Cemetery in Shelbyville. Ella Trollingers' parents were Martha J. Thompson & Joseph Trollinger.Moody &Dana Ventress and Ella Trollinger, inherited the home of James Thompson, when he died in 1911.

If anyone has any info on Martha Ventruess & family,I would appreciate hearing from them.
Looking for Holden and related families living in the 10th district, Bedford county TN in 1850. I think that Eli HOLDEN who was born about 1831 in TN may have been living in Bedford county in 1850 (he married a PACE girl from Bedford county in 1850). Because the 1850 census for the 10th district of Bedford county is lost, I am looking for the names of Holden families who lived in the 10th district just before or just after 1850. All suggestions appreciated.
If anyone has an idea how to get info about families living in the 10th district Bedford county in 1850, I would appreciate it too.
Any information might provide a clue about Eli, my gg grandfather.
Thanks.
Pat

Pre-1850 SANDERS-Pisgah Cemetery

I am finally back to doing a bit more researching on my SANDERS line from Bedford Co, TN and I need a teensy bit of help from you other researchers…

From 2 sources, I have been told that my SANDERS folks – namely John Sanders, Sr. & wife, Susannah Wheeler Sanders (1775 – 1842), and child John Sanders, Jr.(1797 – 1841) & wife Mary, are buried at Pisgah Cemetery in Bedford Co., TN.

My cousin, Harry Sanders, is going to be in the Bedford Co, TN area within the next month and he has volunteered to go to this cemetery and take photos of headstones (if they exist) for me. So some questions…

1. Where is this Pisgah cemetery?
2. Are there markers for the 4 people above?
3. If no markers, how do others “know” that the 4 above are buried there?

I thank you all in advance for any help on the above!

Best wishes,

Allison Saxman
alisax@commspeed.net

My line is from John Sanders, Jr.’s line – his son Isaac Henry Sanders (1823 – 1908) buried in Friendship Cemetery; Columbus, Lowndes County, MS, lived in Fayette Co. & Lamar Co., AL, served in the 26th AL Inf. CSA, moved to Lowndes Co., MS after the Civil War – if anyone connects with him, please let me know! We are gathering photos and other stuff on his line. Just recently documented that Isaac’s great-grandson is the famous baseball player from the 30’s and 40’s – Terry Bluford Moore, from Lamar Co., AL. If you want more details on this documentation, I can provide them. Thanks again.
Does anyone have any knowledge about Miles R. Biggers? He has family members listed as B.A., N.A., and T.M. and a Fannie Deason living there as well. I believe that the Fannie Deason could be my G-grandmother who was orphaned as a child along with her sister Mary. I am working with Barb Perkins on this.
Thanks...Anissa

D. and Elizabeth (Armstrong) Cunningham, who are now living in Marshall County. He entered the Medical College of Nashville in 1871, and during the vacation in the summer of 1872 he taught school to enable him to take the course of lectures in the fall, which he did, and graduated in the spring of 1873. He began practicing his profession in April of that year at Bedford post office, seven miles west of Shelbyville, where he has successfully continued up to the present date. June 14, 1876, he married Lizzie T. Lock, daughter of James Lock. This union has resulted in six children: Vera C., Clare G. (deceased), Ewing B., Hattie S., Lillie R. (deceased) and Horace L.

My husband's ancestor Willam R. Martin married Mary Jane Nance who was the daughter of John Nance and Ann Gambill. I have notes that my late mother-in-law made some time ago that say both Ann and John are buried in the Russell Cemetery in Bedford County.

Also, William R. Martin's mother was Patience Russell. I have been trying to locate Patience's ancestors and perhaps some of her family is buried in that Russell Cemetery.

Was family was Presbyterian or Baptist?

I have a copy of a family history called "The Descendants of Bradley Gambill" by Louise G. Brown and Jane C. Luna, published in 1979, if anyone would like me to look up someone in this line.

Please help! Land grant law suit of 1833 in Bedford County between the Crooks/Harmons/Greers heirs

My research has centered on the Bedford, Lincoln Co., Tennessee area of which I first found my ancestor, Gideon Harmon, in the 1812 Bedford Co., TN Tax list. During the same year, he joined the army in Shelbyville, Bedford Co., Tennessee and fought in the War of 1812.

This is a list of Harmon’s listed in the 1812 Tax List from Bedford Co., Tennessee:
Isaiah (Esaiah), Gideon, Henry, John, Jonathan, Lewis, & Lewis.

This is a partial transcript of his military pension records.

State of Tennessee Bedford County July 11, 1814
I James L Armstrong, late surgeon to the Regiment of Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry commanded by Col. John Alcorn under Major Genl. Andrew Jackson, do hereby certify that Gideon Harmon, a private in Capt. John B. Dempsey's company of mounted gun-men under the command of Col. Newton Cannon, was wounded through the right hand in the Battle of Tallasseehatchie when Brigadeer Genl. John Coffee commanded on the third Nov, 1813 - that I dressed the (?) Harmon soon after the battle; and that I have this day examined the wound and find that his right hand is in a great measure rendered useless in consequence thereof. And in all probability will ever remain so - Given under my hand the date above. James L Armstrong Surgeon R.T.V. Cav.

Note: Gideon wounded on Nov 3, 1813.

There are several letters asking for an increase in Gideon's pension and/or transfers from one office to another. Gideon's return and timing of such is important as I believe he returned to Tennessee to claim his rights in the estate of Jacob Harmon. Please read on....

Gideon moved back to Lincoln Co., Tennessee where he drew a pension from the West Tennessee office in Nashville from September 1822 to September 1832. He apparently had moved back to Mississippi by 1830 as he is in the 1830 Monroe Co., Mississippi Census. In 1830, there is a letter asking that he receive his pension from the Nashville office instead of Natchez, but in 1835, an application for transfer to collect it in the Territory of Mississippi in Natchez since he has moved there. It says that he removed from Lincoln Co TN to Monroe Co, MS: "That he could better promote the interest of his large family by removing to a new country suitable for the cultivation of cotton - and where land could be more easily obtained than where he formerly resided." Records show that he drew a Pension then from the Natchez , MS office from September 1832 until 1858. His tombstone at Bethlehem Cemetery, Oak Hill Community in Monroe County has a date of 1871 that we originally thought was his death year. We now believe that he died in 1858; the year in which his pension ceased.

Gideon and Mary had a LEAST nine children as indicated from the 1820, 1830 and 1840 Monroe Co., Mississippi Census records. I have identified six, James N., Jane, Newton Cannon, Rhoda, Alexander and John T.Harmon. He named one of his sons John T., being a major clue to Gideon's origins.

My research also has centered on Harmons in the Bedford Co., Tennessee area who have origins in Virginia. In the 1850 Monroe Co., Mississippi Census, Gideon is listed born in Virginia and his wife Mary listed as born in North Carolina. This is consistent with his children in later Census records as to his state of birth. The descendants of Jacob Harmon of Bullitt Co., Kentucky are the only group I have found in the area of Bedford with origins in Virginia.

Gideon joined the army in Shelbyville , TN as a member of the 2 Mtd Gunmen, West Tennessee Vols. JOHN T. HARMON was also a member of this same regiment. This John Harmon received a pension from the East Tennessee office of Jonesboro from 1835 to Sept 1838. He married in Rutherford Co., Tennessee (Rutherford boards Bedford County on the North) to Nancy Wilson on 30 Oct 1817. He moved to Arkansas but by 1850 was living in Lamar Co., Texas.

John had a sister named Margaret who married John Crook. He is also named as one of Margaret's brothers in the land grant law suit of 1833 in Bedford County between the Crooks/Harmons/Greers heirs of old father Jacob Harmon's 1,000 acres in Bullitt County, Kentucky . . . and his deposition re: his two shares (bought a sister's-right in 1813), is also of record in Bullitt County, Kentucky. Lewis Harmon listed as a brother in said lawsuit. I have found references to twelve children of old Jacob Harmon but I have only identified three of them, John Troxel, Lewis and Margaret.

I have not been able to find a transcript of the lawsuit but it seems the a possible reason that Gideon moved back to Lincoln Co., Tennessee during this same period and then returned to Mississippi after the lawsuit was settled. I wonder if he was litigator in the lawsuit and his return to Lincoln was to secure his rights.

I am beginning to think that someone in the Harmon family found Gideon under a hollow log and adopted him into the family or that he was an illegitimate son of one of Jacob’s daughters. My handicap is that I have not been able to visit the Bedford and Lincoln County Courthouses to search records.

I would appreciate any help with my Harmon family line and of course anyone who can name the twelve children of Jacob of Bullitt Co., KY.

Information about parent of Wm A. Norman and Mary Ann Gibson in TN in the early 1800s

I am looking for information about William Allen NORMAN b. 1823 in Maury Co or Bedford Co, TN and his wife Mary Ann GIBSON b. 1829 in Bedford Co, TN. They came from TN to Greene Co MO between 1856 and 1859. Wm A died in 1895 and Mary Ann (his first wife) died in 1879, both in Greene Co MO. They are my 2nd great grandparents on my maternal grandmother Hattie Alice Orr’s side. I would also like evidence that about their parents. For Wm A. Norman I believe they are Robert Potter Norman b. about 1777 in NC and died in 1855 in Perry TN and Martha COFFEE b. about 1795 in GA and died in 1852. For Mary Ann Gibson I believe they are John M Gibson b. 1804 in NC and Martha HARPER b. 1808 in Bedford TN and died in 1849. Again I have no evidence that they are indeed the correct parents. Any evidence will be most appreciated. I would also like to know who the grandparents, etc. were of Wm A and Mary Ann.

I believe the children of Robert P Norman and Martha Coffee are listed below. Any confirmation of this would be appreciated.
Thomas N. NORMAN b: 25 DEC 1817
James C. NORMAN b: 18 APR 1818
Mary Jane NORMAN b: 26 SEP 1819
Eliza E. NORMAN b: 29 NOV 1821
William Allen NORMAN b: 4 AUG 1823
Elizabeth P. NORMAN b: 29 DEC 1827
Martha A. NORMAN b: 26 OCT 1829
Robert Porter NORMAN b: 16 MAR 1836

Finally I would like to communicate by email with anyone who has any of the above folks as ancestors.
Many thanks, Bert Waits waitsb@math.ohio-state.edu
They were living in Bedford County during the 1870 census before moving on to Coffee County. Their children are James William, Mary Jane, Robert Wilson, Joseph Thomas, Cynthia Anna, Margaret Elizabeth, and John Henry (Sr). Robert S Dennis was a brick mason as were many of the Dennis family who moved to Tennessee. Thanks for any help or leads anyone may have.

Hugh Snell and family

I am researching the family of Hugh Snell, listed in the 1830 census of Bedford County and the 1840 census of Marshall County. Any information on the names of his wife and seven children (and any other information) would be greatly appreciated.

Hugh Snell was born in North Carolina around 1785 and had at least seven children. My theory is that his yongest son, listed in the 1830 census as less than 5 years old is my gggg grandfather, Abner H. Snell, born in Tennessee in 1829. I'm just trying to prove this.

Hugh's wife does not appear in the 1849 census (has presumably died at some point between 1830 and 1840) and only three children remain in the household, the youngest of who I believe is my grandfather.

Thanks

Brian

I'm especially interested in any deed records on these two men, who lived in Bedford Co., TN in 1850 and before. Hezekiah would have arrived early, perhaps 1820 or just before. And I believe Martin Collins arrived around the same time. The seem to be very closely associated and according to our family lore, Martin Collins married the daughter of Hezekiah Brown, Charity Brown.

There was also another Collins man in the early 1800s. He was Joseph Collins. Does anyone have any info on him? Also, I would be interested in contacting descendants of William and Hestor Collins, both whom are buried in Bethleham Cem. They may be related to Martin Collins.

During a recent visit to Bedford Co., TN, I was informed that Mr. Marsh has an extensive knowledge of cemeteries in Bedford County. I'm especially interested in the Barrett-Carlisle cemetery located just off Robinson Rd. Me and my mother took pictures of the cemetery. The William Carlisle buried there is a brother to my ancestor, Nathaniel Carlisle. I would love to learn of all the burials there and any other history associated with it.

I am looking for information on any of these: Jason W. Meadows, James D. Meadows, William T. Meadows or Joseph S. Meadows. They all moved to Caldwell County Kentucky about the same time. Jason came from Bedford, Tn and the other three all lived in Tennessee, probably the same area. On the 1860 Caldwell, Ky census Jason is listed on page 63 and the other three are listed, with their families, on page 68 as next door neighbors. Some of them have listed their birth place as North Carolina and Tennessee. They are closely associated with other families that moved from the Bedford/Rutherford, Tn area to Caldwell. I don’t know if or how they connect but it appears that they are probably related.
Jason W. The line of John Theophilus Thompson & Mary Newcom seems a good fit, would like to have a response from this family line, to see if we could go in this line? Would appreciate hearing from a fellow researcher.
Thanks,
Nelda Thompson
neldathompson@sbcglobal.net (correct e-mail address)

This aged mother had been a faithful member of the M.E. Church, South, for more than sixty years, and she has now gone to reap her reward. She was the mother of eleven children eight of whom preceed her to the world beyond; three sons are still battling for the Lord, one in Arkansas and two in Texas. may the Lord bless them with all the relatives and friends and may they imitate their mother's godly example till they meet her in the skies.
