I haven't made the family connection to the Smith in th picture to my family, yet! I'm researching myGreat-grandfather Thomas Frank Smith, a miner in Colorado at this time. I did make contact with David Hansen, grandson of Hilda. He did confirm this picture was of his family and the family connection of Juso and Pahkamaa. I am happy to get a copy of the picture to the Pahkamma family. Thanks for your help!

I hope you figure out a connection!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
OBIT - Rapid City Journal on January 20, 2010

RAPID CITY - Mary E. Hansen, 78, Rapid City, passed away Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at Rapid City Regional Hospital Hospice House. She was born Nov. 15, 1931 to Henry and Hilda (Juso) Pahkamaa in Dumont. Mary's father passed away at a young age and her mother Hilda raised their 10 children on a small homestead near Custer Peak. The children attended school at Engelwood and Mary went on to finish high school in Lead, graduating in 1952. She married Vearl Hansen, the 'love of her life' on July 27, 1952. Shortly after they were married, Vearl was inducted into the U.S. Army. While he served his country, Mary worked as a telephone operator. After Vearl was discharged from the Army, he became a barber and Mary was a stay-at-home mother to raise their three sons, David, Dennis and Robert. They later purchased an Auto Body Repair Shop, where Mary worked as the bookkeeper. They were also custodians at the Trinity Lutheran Church for many years. After the custodian services, Mary became a Real Estate agent, in which she was very successful. They later started a home repair service 'A-1 Paint Company,' at which they worked as a team, until Mary became ill with cancer. Mary was a brave and hard fighter when it came to her illness, but she succumbed to in on Jan. 17th. Mary is survived by ... three sisters ... one brother.... She was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers, John, Robert, George, Ernest and Elmer Pahkamaa....
Thanks everyone for all the research and information. I'm intrigued that our family has these pictures and where they fit with my father's family. My grandmother's maiden name was Smith. I had made the assumption this Mrs. Smith was possibly my Great-great grandmother, Mary Smith. But, now I have my doubts. Apparently, these pictures had meaning, they were wrapped and in a specially decorated box. My father is 86 and never recalled seeing any on the photos or the box I discovered. Your help has been fantastic. I'd love to share copies of these photos with these families.

So fun that you posted - thanks. Does this look right?

Large group photo
JUSO family in Lawrence County, South Dakota

Lily Juso age 12 in 1920
Mrs. Smith - is she "Hilya Juso"?
Hilda Pahkama (Juso) age 20 in 1920
Ned Pahkama age 29 in 1920
George Juso age 24 in 1920
Nick Juso age 25 in 1920
Eddie Juso age 18 in 1920
Albert Juso age 17 in 1920
George Pahkama

Circa 1918-1922 Hilda and her husband and his brother came to visit her birth family the Junos for a special occasion of some kind. Also visiting was Mrs. Smith (possibly her husband was "Smithie" and he was there that day also).
At about this time Hilda and Ned Henry lived in Englewood, Lawrence, South Dakota (per death of their infant son there in 1921). Her birth family lived (where?) in Lawrence County at that time.

Hi - oh how sad. So that's a verification that Juso is a maiden name in the Pahkamaa clan.

I haven't seen that 1920 and 1930 census for the Pahkamaas. Have you been able to get the photo large group caption correlated with the census information?

As for the trio of young men labeled "Smithie, Eddie and Albert Juso" - it would seem this could be the Edwin and Albert found in the two 1940 census records above, who were both born just after the turn of the last century. Albert and Eddie look to be teenagers. They are all dressed up with ties and everything. Maybe this is a confirmation picture (religious confirmation). The boys are about the right age to be confirmed if they are members of the Finnish Lutheran church. They may have an older sister who married "Smithie"?

Following that hypothesis, that would be a big day and the family is gathered. Good day for a photo. The large group includes "Mrs. Smith." Could be the same day - the women are dressed in their best dresses and wear hats. Clearly a special occasion. The styles of the dresses is easier to date than the men's clothing - 1915-1920...?

Your thoughts?

I also found this sad article about Robert Pahkamaa and his baby daughter

ABERDEEN AMERICAN-NEWS MONDAY APRIL 29, 1957

MINNESOTA TRAFFIC TOLL NOW 180

By the Associated Press

An automobile collision in northern Minnesota killed two Minneapolis men and their infant daughters Sunday. Wives of both men were injured critically.
The car carrying the members of the two families collided on Highway 61 North of Sandstone with a car carrying two St. Paul youths on their way home from a smelt fishing expedition.
Robert E. Pahkamaa, 22; his daughter Mary 4 1/2 months, and Dawn Joyce Avenson, 2 months, were killed in the crash. Dawn's father, Vern L. Avenson, died a short while later in a Sandstone hospital. ......
Hospitalized after the Sandstone tragedy were Mrs. Pahkamaa and Mrs. Avenson, both 22, and Eugene Bennett, 18, driver of the second car. Bennett suffered a broken arm and cuts about his face. His companion, Richard Krouse, 18, escaped serious injury and was released after hospital treatment.

The Minnesota death index says the Robert's Mother's maiden name was Juso, and it has his correct birthdate of 1924, making him 32, and not 22 as the article states.

I have read that Juso was a Family construction business in that area-SD, ND, WY. hope someone can tell me more on the location. Family name on photo list is Pahkama or Pahkoma. I'm not good with photo dating but if someone has an idea by dress style and age of car please post.

I looked at the Ellis Island record you mentioned. I agree that it appears to read Belle Fourche, South Dakota.

There is an earlier passenger record for a Nils Bjorklund born about 1867 coming to Michigan via Halifax, Nova Scotia December 1887.

Edna

Well, it's bit of a mystery. We know that Nils was born in Sweden and settled in New Hampshire. Family lore says he did come to the United States through Ellis Island, and I was able to locate 2 records of a Nils Bjorklund that seemed to fit most of the criteria through the Ellis Island records. In this possible record he left from Copenhagen, but "Belle Tourdel, S. Dak." was listed as the last place of residence. As if on his first trip he ended up in South Dakota (maybe friends or family), returned to Sweden, and then came back via NYC. I'm wondering if it's referring to South Dakota (especially because there were Swedes there), or if it could be a weird shorthand for South Denmark.

Could it possibly be Belle Fouche? That is the county seat of Butte county in SW South Dakota. It was a fur trading post originally.

Did Nils go there at all before going to NH? Seems unlikely but there certainly were many Scandinavians who went to North and South Dakota.

Barbara

Can someone familiar with South Dakota geography/history let me know if there was a place called Belle Tourdel? I'm trying to decipher an Ellis Island passenger list record, which lists "Belle Tourdel, S. Dak" as a last place of residence around 1897 or earlier. Nils Daniel Bjorklund is the ancestor.

I am not certain but the reference to 747 in relation to the gravestone is probably just the number assigned by the researchers when completing the survey. I believe it is a fairly old graveyard so wouldn't have been organised by numbers as such.

Anyway I have a little more info for you. I contacted Stan Bruce who wrote the article about William Lohr Junior and he went to the graveyard and took a photo of the stone. I will try to attach a copy but this is his photo not mine so please respect that.

The stone records that William Junior was accidentally drowned in Mooply which is in Kerala, South India. A bit more digging led me to an article in the Straits Times apparently a Singapore paper)from 17 October 1918 which reports that a William HC Lohr went to the river with friends to fish and swim. William Lohr disappeared into the water and was drowned (it seems he couldn't swim). The dates tie up with the gravestone.

Don't know if this will work but will try to attach a link to the report.

http://newspapers.nl.sg/Digitised/Article/straitstimes191810...

It doesn't sound like a war death but in his relatively short life he went from South Dakota to India via Scotland so saw quite a bit of the world.

Regards
Mark

Tim
Not sure if you have made any further progress and this is fairly limited information but there is a record of three of the Lohrs in the Doune graveyard in Macduff which is not very far from Huntly really.
This covers Jessie & William Snr and William Junior and is taken from information on the Aberdeen & NE Scotland Family History Society website - http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/

booklet: Doune Kirkyard, Macduff (AA195)
burial ground: Doune Kirk, Macduff
stone: 747
William H. C. Lohr 26 Sept. 1918
William H. Lohr 29 Nov. 1928
Jessie Ann Nicol 20 July 1929

There is als an interesting reference to William Junior drwoning at sea in the British Indian Army in 1918. He was listed in a local book but not on the Macduff war memorial. See http://www.webhistorian.co.uk/pages/index.php?id=107 and near the bottom of the page you will find the story under the heading "13th May 2008 - Banffshire Journal - Unknown Warrior".

Regards
Mark

Hi Beth, Thank you for your assistance.
This sounds like a very good suggestion.

I will give this a try tomorrow.

Yes I do have an obituary for John's brother Robert. He died in Randal, Morrison county MN in 1945 and I obtained the obituary and only Robert and John's sister (Lizzie) living in Alberta, Canada is mentioned in the obituary.

I also obtained the obituaries of the other siblings and of sister Lizzie ( death 1950 ) when she died hoping at least one of them would mention John but no such luck !

John is only mentioned in his brother James obituary ( who dies young in 1917) and then it was worded a little strange as no place of residence is given after John's name.

I'm hoping I can find where this great uncle was and what happened to him one of these days ! It's been a long search with no clues !

Thank you again Beth for the advice and the web site.

Margaret / Canada

Hi, I desperatley need help !
I am looking for my gg,grandparents son who immigrated to the US sometime after 1881.
The last Canadaian Cenus he is on in Canada,is the Canada Federal Census for 1881.

He was born in Ontario, Canada and his parents John Russell and Margaret Russell were both born in Scotland.

I have no midle name for John nor do I have a marriage for him. Making searching for him most difficult.

I do have documentation that at some point he was in Boise County, Idaho.
I have reason to believe he crossed into North Dakota before arriving at Idaho County. He was in Idaho or somewhere close by where he picked up his mail at Ola, Idaho in the years 1893 to 1912.

I believe he may have gone back to Northern US.
Perhaps North or South Dakota.
His older brother Robert Russell (1857 )who immigrated to the US before him crossed into North Dakota where he took up residence for awhile before settling in Morrison County,
MN, USA.
I have searched th MN, Census but while coming up with some of his first cousins, I haven't come up with John.

John's siblings names wich may be helpful if he had a family of his own, were: Robert MN USA / Lizzie, Alberta, Canada / Mary, British Columbia, Canada / James, Ontairo, Canada / Hugh, Ontario, Canada / William .

I am up against a brickwall because I cannot find a John Russell who was born in Canada about 1863 or 1864, with parents born in Scotland on any US Federal Census !

I realize the birth year could be off in the US Census, which only adds to the confusion !

If anyone can help or recognizes this person in their tree,I would really appreciate hearing from you.

Here's that 1940 census, for the record. Hard to find "your" William Stewart as there are many of that name and age in those locations (South Dakota, Kansas, Missouri). Do you have more clues? Is little Williams's middle name Lee? What does the L stand for in Dorothy L Wilson? I am wondering if big William is William Lee Stewart.

Often couples of that era got married in the town where the bride's parents were living (this is still often true). Do you know where Dorthy lived ca 1933?

1940
Kansas City, Wyandotte, Kansas
William Stewart 31 b So Dakota, machine operator(hard to read) feed mill <----
Dorothy L Stewart 23 born Kansas, married 7 years (ca 1933)
Helen M Stewart 5
Donald J Stewart 2
William Le Stewart 11 months old
Residence in 1935: Lesummit, Missouri

You will need to find the marriage certificate. If you don't know where they married, you will need to use clues from the census.

The 1940 census states they had been married for seven years, making their marriage between March 1932 and March 1933 (if reported accurately).

They also reported they lived in Lesummit [sic], Missouri, in 1935, two to three years after they married. Lee's Summit extends into two counties in Missouri: Jackson and Cass.

Do you know the birth place of their eledest child, Helen, in about 1934? That might help narrow down where they married.

Where is Dorothy L. in the 1930 census? Who were her parents? Are they the Charles and Mabel living in Vernon County, Missouri?

I didn't find an online marriage record for William and Dorothy. I suggest reposting your question on the Missouri bulletin board.

Beth
not related

In 1940 William and Dorothy are found in Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas. They reported they had been married for seven years; they lived in Lesummit, Missouri, in 1935.

From the dates of the births of the children, the family moved from Missouri to Kansas between about 1937 and early 1939.

Can you get more information about William from the birth certificates of his children?

Information on William Stewart

I am looking for any information I can find on my great grandfather, William Stewart. He was born 1908 or 1909. Married to Dorothy L. Wilson. They were married between 1929 and 1933. This has been a family mystery because he disappeared sometime in the early 1940's. No one in my family knows what happened to him. In the 1940 census it shows that he was born in South Dakota. If anyone could help, you would be solving a 70 year mystery.

ABSOLUTELY! Actually, Zeeve is my first husband and my daughter's last name. Joel Morris Zeeve had three wives (at least) and probably 8 children in total. His son, Louis Israel Zeeve was my father-in-law, my daughter's grandfather. He told me bits and pieces of the family story: Joel Morris had these children: Ida Zeeve (born 1887 New York) might have not been Sarah's child, Bertha Zeeve (born 1890). Joel married Sarah Rae Horowitz in 1888 (that's why I think Ida might have been another woman's daughter. Sarah and Joel had (for sure) Teresa or Tessie Zeeve(1900), Lilian Rosalia "Rose" Zeeve (1902), Louis Israel Zeeve (1904). Then Sarah died and Joel married Zlate Landsberg "Lottie" in 1906. Lottie and Joel had Rae Zeeve (1906) Jerome Zeeve (1907) and Bessie Zeeve (1909).

Much more information than that gets complicated because Rae and Jerome were special needs. Neither married or had children. Bessie was a nurse and apparently never married either. Louis did. Rose did. Some of the children were in the Hebrew Orphanage in Brooklyn (or there abouts) because Joel couldn't take care of them. it's quite famous actually. I can put you in touch with my daughter directly. my email is raye102@hotmail.com

Hi, My name is Scott Kalmikoff. I am a 21 year old amateur genealogist from New York.
I have been trying to find out information about my great grandmother’s background but I have not had any luck. All I knew was that her name was Ida Weill and she was married to my great grandfather, Charles Weill. I also knew that her sister’s name was Bertha Haupt.
I didn’t even know her maiden name. My father thought that it was Sive.
After doing some research I finally found her listed in the 1900 census record under Ida Zeeve.
It listed her as the daughter of Joel and Sarah Zeeve.
It also said that her sisters were Bertha, Esther and Theresa.

Is it possible that we are related?

When you post, post the link to your family tree for those that can't find it. It helps prevent receiving information you already have, helps volunteers to see the big picture, and helps prevent information that doesn't help.
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/15333851/person/1670633440?ss...=

The 1900 Census for Minneapolis, Hennepin Co, MN, enumerated 12 June.
John Hoff, born Oct 1871 in S. Dakota to both parents born in Norway, carpenter, married 6 years (1893/1894).
--based on enumeration date, 50/50% married 1893 or 1894. BUT, number of years married has a lot of documented errors.
Lina, born July 1872 in Norway immigrated 1891, mother of 3/2 living
--Year of birth often wrong on the census.
Oswald, Dec 1895, Minnesota
Henry, July 1898, MN.

Census 1910, she was 38, immigrated 1892, married 15 years, enumerated 15 April.
Her age in 1920 was 48, imm/1890, widow, enumerated 3 January.
Her age in 1930 was 58, imm/1890, widow, enumerated 2 April.
--based on age and enumeration dates, I would "suspect" the year in 1900 census was wrong being 1871. The emigration dates go from 1890 to 1892, which seems to happen frequently. The Norway appeared constant, although I have found some actually born in Sweden and some Sweden born actually born in Norway.
--Her cemetery stone shows "1870." Her death certificate "might" identify further, but it is usually based on the knowledge of the person providing the information. This person might have only a potential names of the parents. I don't put much stock in the DC's. It is a tool however.

I did a number of checks on the Norwegian Digital Archives:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...
The 1875 Census, however it is incomplete. The other census were before and after her birth or immigration. I checked the Emigrantar, listing of persons immigrating, also without success.
--The problem here: First her name was "probably" Lina; but she could have shortened it from many other names, Olina, etc. The "lEna" was probably Angelicanized / Americanized spelling. You didn't identify how you identified her parents names of John Hanson and Annie Gilbertson. If Lina was born in Norway in 1871, she may have been "Lina Johansdtr/Johansdotter." This was the period of Patronymics, the Norwegian naming system in effect at that time. If she did arrive using the patronymic "Hans...", or "Johan..." it was probably Americanized to being an "sen," versus a "son." "Most" Norwegian names had the "sen," but not all.

Article 2 here explains Patronymics. http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/articles.html

Under emigration, at the potential year of 1890/ish, she would have been 19 or so, old enough to emigrate without the parents. At that time, Norwegians used the transmigration method, first to Liverpool/England transatlantic ports, then to the new world to the East Coast of the USA, or through Quebec Canada. A lot of immigrants arrived through Canada then down into the Dakota's/Minnesota. One might find the manifest of the ship taken through Canada, but without departure year, very difficult.

For John Hoff:
I checked the Bureau of Land Management records of land patents issued under the Homestead Act and found MANY Hoff obtaining land in SD, however most were after the 1870 time frame. Your tree indicates his mother was Hoff and father was Gulbrandsen/ish. I don't know where that may have been found.
--The 1870 Census for Dakota Territory shows a "G. Gulbertson" born in Norway, age 26. He was in Yankton, presently in S. Dakota.

The Minnesota Marriage Index shows a John Hoff marriage to a Lena Weingartner in Kanabec County, 9/30/1895. I did not find this couple in the 1900 census. Show...did Lena marry a Weingartner before she married John? Or were they actually married in S. Dakota?
