I found this old thread because I have recently received a lot of information about Hans, my great-grandfather. I have something entitled "Paper given at Twenty-Fifth Annual Dakota History Conference, June 3-5, 1993 at Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, by Birgit Jaastad Brokenleg" where she researched in the Norwegian-American Historical Archives at St. Olaf and found hand-written notes and stories by Hans in some files compiled by an editor named Torkel Oftelie, also a friend of Hans. She had no biographical data & amazingly enough, asked an Alane Cleven in her Norwegian class if she had by any chance heard of him & turned out he is her great-grandfather. Alane wrote his biography in Norwegian. Then I have a document entitled "Part of my life's happenings Hans Nelson Cleven written in 1926". He writes down many details about himself, stating he was born October 16, 1851 in Nassedal Ovre Tillermarken Norge on a small farm called Kleiva. At 8, in 1859, he left from Porsgrunn, Norway on the Sail Ship Amalia with Captain Peterson of Porskerund, landing 6 weeks later in Quebec. Many more details follow if anyone is still interested. I see that Ross Puppe made a post on this too - Hi Ross! - I am sending you a large packet of this information, it's really wonderful stuff!

I am not part of the family but doing research on the family that Florence Parks married.

Florence was married at the age of 17 in Perkins SD.
she was a servant age 19 with child (Calvin 1 2/12) her name was Florence Maytum (1930 census).

She as far as I can tell married Charles Maytum in or around 1930. Charles was a MD and the family came from Kent Eng.

I see a Florence Maytum scolarship set up in Iowa.

Calvin Eugene Maytum was in Florence, Oregon in 1944 and married Vivian May Mason in Dec. 1956 Clark Co Nevada. (Second Marriage). Calvin has a son through his first marriage that is living in Seatle Washington.

I see a Nathan O Parks from SD married in Mexico 1951

Nathan Orville Parks Pedigree
Male Family

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Event(s):
Birth: 05 JUL 1909 , , South Dakota

Christening:
Death: 21 NOV 1965 Rupert, Minidoka, Idaho

Burial:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages:
Spouse: Leura Geneva Cook Family
Marriage: 28 FEB 1951 , , Mexico

hope it helps Nathan is in SD in the 1930 census...

Barbara,
Thank you. I have dead ended on GrAunt Myrtle.
I know enough, but not the whole story.
Strange as it seems, doing this the hard way
was the way I found my Grandfather, WITHOUT any kind
of paper trail of any kind.
The hard part is not really knowing at least her year
of birth.
I have found so many reasons, why the family hid true
dates and such, but this is what is making this so
very hard.
I have enough on the lady that raised Myrtle and my GrGrandmother, traced her, but am now stuck with her
date of death, and searching for her obit.
I sure could use all the help I can get.
Not giving up help. But we all don't have a large
amount of time to give to this.
I have several ideas which revolve around the lady that raised them. Finding this ladies family is another brickwall. But I do know she did take in my GrGrandmother.
As I have a hand written letter by my GrGrandmother stating this. Just need someone with a subscription to newspapers, to help me find her death/ obit.
Thank you kindly.
Martha in CA~

Hi,
I am not related but just enjoy searching.

When I went back and looked up the 1920 census record Myrtle is listed as the head and Charles is not present. She is listed as Married not Widowed but that is often wrong. That census was taken in Jan. 1920.

I found a South Dakota Marriage record for Myrtle Curtis and Frank Newling (the boarder in her home in 1920!) for 2 Mar 1920. Myrtle Newling is listed in the South Dakota Death Index as having died 21 Mar 1922 in Faulk Co. South Dakota.

Frank Newling and his son John are still in Faulk Co. South Dakota in the 1930 census but so far I haven't found any of the children of Myrtle.

Frank and John went to Montana where Frank died in 1938. John Franklin Newling b 8 Apr 1911 South Dakota died 11 June 1987 Los Angeles CA. His mother's maiden name is Holmquist which matches the maiden name of Frank Newling's first wife as listed in the SD Marriage Index.

There are several family trees on Ancestry that include the Newlings and list the second wife of Frank Newling as Myrtle Jane Niles born 1882 d 1922. If this information is correct it doesn't sound like she is "your" Myrtle based on information in your other posts but getting her death certificate might clarify it.

Hope that helps. I'll keep looking for Myrtle.
Barbara

Hello:
I am trying to find out more info on the Charles H & Myrtle A Curtis family.
Myrtle could be my long lost GrAunt.
We find her in 1910 in Davison, Perkins, SD.
With new husband Charles H. Curtis.
Daughter Dorothy age 2 1/2 months.
Son, Paul Smith 2 years old.
So I am presuming she was married prior to a Mr. ----Smith.
In 1920 Charles & Myrtle in Faulkton, Faulk, SD.
now with:
Paul C age 12
Dortha 9
Charles N 7
Walter J 5
Calvin L 5 1/2 months
And two borders:
Frank Newling 51 & his son Johnnie F age 8.
Myrtle was indeed born in WI. When my GrGrandparents divorced, GrGrandma took off with my Grandfather & GrAnunt.
They were left for a long while with a Mrs. Freeman who brought them up in Aberdeen, SD. Before leaving them with some close friends. They were already working as they were old enough to.
My problem is in locating Myrtle herself.
If anyone in Perkins could assist me, I would greatly appreciate it. I have spent much money trying to follow other leads, to no avail. I cannot afford to do that at this time.
Thank you.
Kind reguards,
Martha

Charles A. Berg - Perkins Co 1910?

I am looking for information on a man who bought 160 acres of land (BLM Grant) in Perkins Co in Aug 1910, Charles A. Berg.

The brother of my great-great grandmother was named Carl August or Charles August Berg, b. Oct. 1854, Hemmesjö, Kronoberg, Sweden, immigrated Jun 1880. In the April 1910 census he was living with his sister and brother-in-law in Brown County, working on their farm. I cannot find him in records after that.

Possibly he died, but just possibly he bought his own farm in Perkins County. Any further info on this man would be most helpful.

Thank you,
Kelly Keegan
kellymkg@aol.com

He does not appear in

I don't know if anyone is still reading this thread but Anna Sieders was born in Illinois, according to all the US census records. Her parents, Harm Sieders and Albertje Schelhaas arrived in the US Dec 19, 1881 and she was born in Feb 1882. Her name does not appear with her parents and siblings Willem and Niesienn(Nancy) on the immigration records. I have posted quite a bit of information on this branch of the Sieders family. Most of it comes from my grandmother(Johanna Heil)'s records. Her mother was Katherine Sieders, one of Anna's younger sisters.

RICHARDS/CURRINGTON - 1913 - any newspapers?

I'm looking for information (newspaper article maybe?) on a Frederick C. RICHARDS from Lancaster County, who was shot and killed by his father-in-law (last name CURRINGTON) around Dec 19 - 22, 1913 in Perkins county. I've looked quite a bit for genealogical resources for both of these counties, and it looks like this was a pretty rural, wild-wild-west kind of area. Does anyone have any ideas, access to newspapers, or suggestions on which newspaper something like that might have been reported in. Any, any help would be so greatly appreciated.
Jean - jcharb8@msn.com
Thank you

I have tried online at used bookshops and the bigger bookshops, but no luck. Can anyone help me round up a copy. I would really appreciate it. The book was put out by members of the Grand River Extension Club in 1976. Published by Taylor Publishing Company, they no longer are publishing it. Thanks in advance
Judy

I find very little on the surname JANISH, but there are many JANISCH & some JONISCH records. My STARK - GAPP family of McCook Co., SD, intermarried with JANISCH.

Your Matt JANISH may have been from Marshall Co., SD, where a Matt JANISH patented land in 1908, Twp. 126 - 53, in parts of Sec. 29 & 32.

The location in Perkins Co. was probably Twp. 22 - 14, in Section 20 N, patented 1911. In Perkins Co., there were patents for Elizabeth and also Henry JANISCH, also in 1911.

Check the SD Births site through Google or
http://apps.sd.gov/applications/PH140ver100Birth Rec/index.asp?
I don't see any Matt, but those in northeastern SD (Marshall & Day Cos.) may be related. The only one I see with the JANISH spelling was Joseph, b. 15 Aug. 1907, Day Co., s/o Maria PATCH & Julius JANISH.

FamilySearch database of the 1880 Census has a Julius JANUSCH, 13, b. Prussia, s/o Henry, 60; brothers August, 24, & Wm., 16, Roark, Gasconade, MO.

Social Security Death Index has a Matt B. JANISH (4 Mar. 1909 - 13 Aug. 1999) last res. Waukesha, WI, SSN issued in Idaho.

There is also SSDI record of Leon JANISH (10 July 1916 - Dec. 1975) SSN issued ND.

One Leonhard R. JAENISCH was b/bpt. 9 Mar. 1853, Kaiserslautern, Pfalz, s/o Heinrich JAENISCH & Wilhelmine MACK.

Anthony JANISCH & Julia had son Leon, b. 24 Mar. 1896, Detroit, Wayne, MI.

Can you think of any more clues? Do you have death certificates and obituaries?

You mentioned that Tina's was a delayed birth certificate. That would most likely mean that she did not have one at the time of birth and that she probably received it because she was applying for a Social Security card, passport, voter registration, or some other document that required proof. Do you have the date the delayed certificate was issued? You could check at the county level, Register of Deeds office, to see whether they still have the proof of birth given for the delayed certificate. When I corrected my father's birth certificate, I had to have three forms of proof even though he and his siblings were all living.

The mother's name varied, but I think she was actually Lillian MOWRY on the SD Births site (online) for sons born to James RHINEHART:
Victor, 18 Sep. 1893, Hutchinson Co.;
Lester, b. 18 Apr. 1898, Hutchinson County; &
Allen, b. 21 July 1907, Edmunds Co.

Birth records were supposed to begin mid-1905 in South Dakota, but a trip to the courthouse in Perkins County might have been difficult or considered non-essential by parents in 1909. It is possible that the county might have a record that didn't get forwarded to the state, but I think it's more likely that none was issued in 1909. If you know what church they attended, you might find baptismal records. There were also school censuses, but those might be in several places, at the clerk of courts/magistrate's office or at the state level, etc. Have you found the family on federal censuses of 1900 - 1920?

Ancestry database, Hutchinson Co., 1900: James W. RHINEHART, 29; Lillie, 23; Victor, 8; Archie, 4; Lester, 2; Earl, 1.

I can't find them in 1910 & '20 on Ancestry. There was a James REINHARDT, 36, of Edmunds County, 1910, but no family shows up with him. There was a Lillie of Yankton Co., 1920, but no family shows up with her. Victor might have been the one of Aurora Co., 1920. There was also a Lester M. RHIANEHART of Aurora Co., 1920.

--This isn't my family, and I'm going to be offline for a couple of months.

My mother's cousin was Marguerite Virginia Schar, b. 09 Mar 1911 in South Dakota d. 19 Apr 1998 in San Antonio, Texas. Her Father was Albert Schar b. 27 Nov 1885 in Lawrence, South Dakota, d. Jan 1963 in Strool, South Dakota. He married Mary Ellen Mulhair on 15 Jun 1910 in Parker, South Dakota. Mary Ellen Mulhair b. 06 Mar 1888 in Parker, South Dakota, d. Dec 1963 in Davenport, Iowa. Albert Schar's father was George Schar and his mother was Wiebke Tauck. I am descended from the Mulhair side of the family. It's my understanding that Mary Ellen's first husband was Albert Schar and after their divorce her second husband was George A. Vogel.

Jim Appleby

I am wondering if there is someone who would be willing to help me find a death record for my great grandfather, Jens Carl (JC) Christensen born 29 Sep 1875 in Denmark, died Sept 1965 in Lemmon, SD. I don't know if there would be an obituary somewhere as well.

I would be willing to cover any expenses or trade this help for help in Minnesota or with Swedish records (as I have a subscription to genline...)

Thank you.
Caroline Herfindahl

When I stopped by the state Vital Records office in Pierre a few years ago, they were able to give me a delayed birth certificate for Tina May Rhinehart, born in Perkins County on May 7, 1909 to James and Lillian (Mowry) Rhinehart. Several of James and Lillian's grandchildren have told me that Tina had a twin sister named Ruth, but I wonder why the state Vital Records office wouldn't have a record of her birth if this was the case. I am wondering if Tina had any siblings born in Perkins County after 1907 (the year her brother Allen was born in Edmunds County) and before 1912 (the year her brother Leon was born in Yankton County). Maybe a check with the Perkins County vital records office at the courthouse in Lemmon might turn up something?

Hello. I am also descended from this same lineage going way back to the Vik family. My family Mons Johannes Vik Nipen from Vik and his wife Britha emigrated from just north of Rommerheim in 1871 to Lincoln County, Dakota Territory at the time, just NE of Beresford, SD. Have you been in contact with any of the Eidness' from the Beresford area?
