ken4af,
I do not know of any LaPlante's that moved to MT. I know some moved to ND, and others went to Utah or Idaho. Fred's Parents were both buried in either very northern SD or ND, they lived close to the border.
Thanks for checking.

There is a copy of a book at Emil M. Larson Library, Clark county, SD. and Northern State University, Aberdeen, SD. Books; Southern Clark County and Centennial History were put together for Bi-Cenntenial in 1976. A list is posted on line for the name in these book, I noticed some names of interest to me. Lots of townships listed, one is Washington (Brelin). I need Southern Clark county.

http:itctel.com/sdclark/cemeteries/database.html

Do you know of these books?

Thank you.

I believe you are looking for a William Haner Williams (my 4th great grandfather). He was born 17 Feb 1936 in New York and died 15 Sep 1928 in Toledo, Oregon. He is buried in Bethel Cemetery in Polk County, Oregon.

I have his obituary and other related information in my Ancestry tree. A book entitled "Genealogy of the Balch Families in America" mentions his family's move from Aurora, Waushara Co., WI to Raymond, Clark Co., SD in 1884 where they stayed "for a time". They came to Oregon in 1902. And he did serve in the Wisconsin 3rd Light Artillery "Badger Battery".

I would like to hear what you have found. Are you related?

Hi Bill,
Thanks for your reply. I have seen the Fred & Virginia La Plant in the 1910 Dewey County Census. His race is listed as Indian and the children are not the same as the 1900 census in Clark County. This Fred from 1910 is also listed on the 1900 census in Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, Dewey County, SD.
I appreciate everyones help in looking into this, but my "Fred" LaPlant was not Indian.

I know from following (& documents) the family, that Madres divorced Fred in Feb. 1904 and married John Understock in Spink County, SD. In the divorce document, she stated that she last saw Fred on June 21, 1901; when he just left and never came back. I've heard from family stories that he went out fur trapping and never came back, and in another story I heard he was shot dead. But if he was shot dead before 1904, why would Madres need the divorce document?

Thanks for the info on fur trapping, it does make sense that it would be done in the winter season. So, if he was last seen June 21, 1901- then the story of fur trapping is probably not true either. What else could he have went to do in Summer? Unless he did mysteriously met his death?

Thanks again for helping me work this out.

Hi Reli,
I am not related, just thinking I might add something.
This looks like a tough one. It looks like it would be easy to confuse your Fred with another Fred LaPlante. The 1900 census shows his wife as Virginia (not Madres) married 13 yrs. Then, subsequently, the 1910 shows a Fred still married to a Virginia for 23 yrs, but in Dewey County. It would look like the same Fred, except that the birth places don't match. Finally, a Fred & Virginia are both buried in Pierre, Hughes Co, SD. The ages are not exactly what you have given, but not that far off. But this all seems weirdly coincidental.
So back to 1900, the census taker must have erroneously written Virginia for both mother & daughter. .....But was Fredric even alive, or living with the family at that time? Nothing proves that. That was June 20, 1900. Just one year later, Madres filed for divorce, contending that Fred had been gone over a year. Trapping season is in the winter, suggesting that Fred disappeared the winter that included Jan of 1900. You say Fred hadn't been heard of since June 1901, but that was actually just the court date. .....
I would suggest that anyone searching newspapers should start by looking at disappearance in the winter of 1899-1900. .... If Fred went trapping, he could have gone right in the neighborhood. There would have been no certain place to look for him. The terrain in Clark Co. provided fur-bearing animals of all kinds just about anywhere --- coyotes, fox, raccoons, mink, muskrats, etc....... Actually his death could have been a combination of both your stories. He could have very easily accidentally shot himself tripping thru slough weeds while out trapping.
Bill Feller

Thanks for the reply, but yes I am sure it is the correct Fred LaPlante in the 1900 Census. I know the family was in the area in that time frame (from baptisms, etc) and the other data matches up. It is very common for the censuses to not be completely accurate; i.e., years of birth, and sometimes names (or spellings).
I believe the other Fred LaPlante you speak of was of Indian Heritage.

Are you sure you are following the correct "Fred" LaPlante into Clark Co, SD. your 1900 census shows him to be 35 yrs old, not 32. There is another Fred LaPlante in SD, born in 1861, who ended up farther west in Dewey or Hughes County.
Things just don't correspond, since you give the 1900 census as Fred with wife Virginia, not Madres.

I am looking for information on the DEATH of Philorome Jerome "Fred" LaPlant/e.
He was born in May 1868 Illinois (probably Kankankee County); to Joseph Joel "Joel" LaPlant/e ( 1836-1925) and Julia Mary Ponton (1839-bef 1930).

"Fred" married Madres Ponton (1873-1934) on Nov. 28, 1889 in Elrod, Clark, South Dakota and they had 3 children together; 2 of which survived to adulthood. Frederick Joseph La Plant (1891-1971) and Virginia Adeline La Plante (1898-1985).
I have found "Fred" on the following census records:
July 4, 1870 Montana township, Labette County, Kansas
Name Age
Joel Leplant 34
Julia Leplant 33
John Leplant 13
Mary Leplant 11
David Leplant 9
Rosa Leplant 8
Joseph Leplant 5
Jerome Leplant 2 <- this is Philorome Jerome "Fred" LaPlant

NOTE: John, Mary, David & Rose's surnames are actually Latrimouille, they are Julia's children from her first marriage to Jean Baptiste Latrimouille.

June 16, 1880 Bourbannais County, Illinois
Name Age
Joel La Plonte 44
Julie La Plonte 43
Philosome La Plonte 12 <- this is Philorome Jerome "Fred" LaPlant
Denis La Plonte 8
Ulger La Plonte 2
George La Plonte 5m
Mary Latiemouille 21

June 21, 1900 District 0086, Cottonwood, Clark County, South Dakota
Name Age
Frank H Rarick 46
Cara A Rarick 11
Artha E Rarick 8
Katie A Rarick 6
Fredric Laplant 35 <- this is Philorome Jerome "Fred" LaPlant
Virginnia Laplant 25
Virginnia Laplant 2
Fredrick Laplant 9

I had been told by some family members that one day he went out fur trapping, and never came back. Another story I heard was that someone killed him in a barn, by shooting him in the back of the head. But if that is true, where did this happen and where is he buried?
The first story of him disappearing is more probable since in 2010, I came in the pocession of his wife's divorce documents. The documents dated February 23, 1904 states "That on or about the 21st day of June 1901 the
defendant (Fred, who did not appear) disregarding the solemnity of his marriage vows willfully and without cause deserted and abandoned the plaintiff (Madres) and ever since has and still continues so to willfully desert
and abadon the plaintiff and to live seperate and apart from her, without any sufficient cause and against her will and without her consent." The document further stated that "Fred" failed to provide for Madres for more than one year and that she had been compelled to live upon the charity of friends and to go out at hard labor to support herself and minor children.
The divorce was granted and Madres remarried to John Understock the same day.
So, "Fred" had not been seen or heard from since June 21, 1901.
What I'd like to know is if anyone had heard anything about this man from their families? If something happened, it had to have been talked about.
Does anyone have access to local Clark County newspapers from this time period? Is there anything in the paper about him disappearing?
Does anyone have knowledge about fur trapping/trading, of this time period? Where would he have gone if this is what he was doing?
I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can provide. Thank you!
Ancestry trees say that he was son of William CLARK[E] & Mary GREENWOOD. The last address I found for him, 1940 census, was Gevinn [Gwinn?] St., Medina, Orleans Co., NY. He was of Orleans County, NY, by 1905, perhaps by 1902, as Joseph was born in New York.
Kelly,
In reference to you posting about Sarah Jane Reynolds Kiggins Willenberg, I would be interested if you know anything about her sister, Tabitha Reynolds. I believe Tabitha married a John Fox. Only based on the census records, Tabitha died before 1900, but her husband and children lived on in Clark County after that. I would be most interested in knowing more about George Reynolds and Susanna Burrier. Thanks.

One thing that must be considered if the census taker knew the family and the family used nick names in everyday life.

I took the Lee R as just being messed up Robert Lee like some of the other census for other families I have worked on. where they switch the first and middle names around.

I picked up a few locations where they lived from James' daughter's story. It seems that the family moved aroound a great deal.

Leon has me puzzled. as he doesn't fit in and the Census says both parents born in SD.

Did they take in any grandchild, niece, nephews, or a neighbors child? I know that was sometimes done and they claimed the child as there own. Remember early on no offical formers where needed to change name.

I have a family here in Letcher where the children where born to one father and when the mother renamed took the step-father's name. Also in my own family it appears that my gr gr grandfather from KY decided to leave his unit and is next found in IL known by a different name all together.
He did take a different spelling of his mother's maiden name as a surname. I only found this out while researcher for him and a person researching this father's family said it was oral history for them. Also another member of the family remembers her grandfather telling her of the change.
So before offical records were kept on just about everything we do it was easy to change names completely. No one asked questions like SSI no., birth cert. and such.

You can see the 1900 census at the pilot site of FamilySearch. In Vienna (Village), Foxton Twp., Clark Co., HOLLISTER, Isaac, b. Mar. 1823, married 55 years, wf. Sallie, b. Mar. 1825, they & parents b. New York. She had had 3 ch., two living. Also in household, partner Jacob HOFFMAN, b. Oct. 1859, & family.

In Woonsocket (city), Sanborn Co., 1900, James A. HOLLISTER, b. Oct. 1854, NY NY NY.

Watertown, Codington Co., SD, 1900, Fred B.HOLLISTER, b. Je. 1856, married 25 y; wf. Agnes L., b. Mar. 1858, they & parents b. NY; she had 3 ch., 3 living
Mable, b. July 1885, SD {should be 1886, per SD Births}
adopted son Leon, b. Apr. 1892 {1898?), aged 2 , SD SD SD

In Sanborn Co., 1910, HOLLISTER,
James A., 56; Mary J., 59; Sallie A., 85.
F. B., 54; Agnes L., 52; Lee R., 11; Sally Ann, 85.
[Sallie/Sally must have spent time with each son. Agnes was ROBINSON, per SD Births. That really messes up the records. SD Births has Robert L., b. 9 Nov. 1896, as you have Robert, but the 1900 census has adopted son Leon, aged 2; & 1910 census has has Lee R., 11. ]

Isaac could be the one listed on FamilySearch as Isaac HOLLISTER, b. 22 Mar. 1823, Dryden, Tompkins, NY, son of Kenner or Kinner HOLLISTER & Mary WINCHELL.

Have fun sorting this out!

*****
From the Aberdeen Daily News, dated July 15, 1897:
Bath, S.D., July 14 -

Freeman Kelley and family, accompanied by Mr. Tomlin, made B.C. Talbot, Mr. Kelley's uncle, a brief visit last Friday. They were on their way from Edmonton, N.W.T. to their former home near Vandervoort, Clark county, having made the entire distance, fifteen hundred miles, by team. The roads were first class all the way, the first muddy highways they met with being between Leola and here. The best crops they saw along the road were also between Leola and here. The route they took was south to Calgary, then southeast to the Milk River in Montana, to the Missouri and down that stream to a point west of Leola. In the Milk River Valley they saw a great many carcasses of cattle which perished last winter. It was no unusual thing for them to turn out of the trail to avoid the strong odor arising from the dead bodies. They estimate the number they saw in the Milk River valley alone at 5,000. After they entered the Dakotas, they saw very few. The trip was a very pleasant one and lasted sixty days. The country which they left is a good stock country, but is not much good for farming. They will probably make their permanent home in Clark county.
*****
