August is my grandmothers uncle. I believe he was 7'3" and a 50 cent piece could fit through his ring :) he toured with a circus and lived in California. he eventually moved to Oregon and lived with his brother prince where he passed away. He was indeed the tallest sheriff in the US at that time. His overalls, ring, and hat are in the Wessington Springs museum. Let me know if there's anything you want to know, I can try and find out!

There is not much back ground of the family to be known...any help, storys, or "roots" would be very welcome.

stmoci@hotmail.com

Hi,

I Frank and Fannie (sp) Katilinek (Kotilinek is how we spell it) are my great grandparents. My Grandfather Frank was their son born 1896/1897. There were 2 children named Frank. The first being born in 1889, Frank C.according to birth certificate, who was called Charlie on census records.
If I may ask, who was your grandparent that was a Katilinek. Frank and Fannie had 4 children, Frank C. (Charlie), William, Mayme, and Frank. I don't believe Charlie had any kids, William was said to have died young, Mayme married a Culbertson and had children, and I know Franks children.

All of this is not verified so if you are a great grandchild I would certainly like to hear from you.

So, you would be my husband's second cousin! Your grandfather, Frank was brother to my husband's grandmother, Mayme / Maime. Yes, the family was split up with the death of Tony Kotilinek on January 29, 1901, (age 32) just after Mayme's sixth birthday, little Frank being 4 1/2. Certainly, Frank may have been too young to understand much and may have spoken Bohemian at home. Am not sure where these other names are coming from, but I have docs that match the census names. It is still a bit of a puzzle to me. Some of what I have is not for open forum. You will need to contact me privately.

You may want to post on a different forum. This one is for Buffalo County, South Dakota.

You might need census microfilm for Chautauqua Co., NY. If you're not in the area, Google RAOGK and then follow instructions.

Ancestry shows these names from passenger lists for New York, but I don't see them on the Castle Garden site.
BRACISZEWSKI: Anna, Crazhia, Franz, Franziska, Franziska, Hanislane, Juliane, Martin, Mich, & Pant. [Perhaps there's a spelling difference.]

Looking for ZURAWSKI, I found another Magdalena ZURAWSKI, b. 10 July 1792, Wiecbork, Bydgoskiego, Poland, dau/o Magdalena WARZYNSKA & Josepho ZURAWSKI.

USGenWeb > NY > Chautauqua > Bemus Point Cem.
Where did you look when you found this Edmunds Co., S.D.? We believe that Edmunds County was named after Newton Edmunds. We have a copy of the signed letter from Abraham Lincoln appointing Newton as Gov. of the Dakota Territories. I am a descendant of Newton Edmunds, we don't know who is son was, buy his son's son was Porter Charles Edmunds, and his son (PC Edmunds) was Francis Newton Edmunds (my grandfather) and his sister was Marge Edmunds, Francis's sons are Dana Edmunds (my father) Pete Edmunds (my uncle,) and Don Edmunds (my uncle). I hope this helps you. And if you happen to have any information on Newton Edmunds, please, do answer this post or e-mail me at edmundsa@sonoma.edu Thanks!

I remember that he was still taller than a couple of people who were standing next to him.

My father grew up in the Springs and told me a couple of stories. My grandfather (5'8") could look August "square in the belt buckle". Grandpa was in a store with a high counter on his tip toes to rest his elbows on the the counter - August came in and sat on it.

As I understand, August was the tallest lawman in the world and never carried a gun.

I would love to learn more myself.

Steve Lamb

Hi,
My name is Leanna (Kotilinek) Schafer. I believe that Frank and Fannie Tusa are my great grandparent too. I'm having alot of trouble with different information and spelling of names. My grandfather was Frank Kotilinek born Aug of 1896. He had 3 siblings: Charles, William, and Maime. The census record I found lists all the children but the mother as Tony and father Frank but the last name is spelled Kotelinek. My grandfather clearly stated that his mother was Frannie so the census must be incorrect. I also found birth certifcate for a Frank Katilinek born to Frank and Fannie. The record kind of goes awry from there with all the children being split up. Maime was with the Crockett family in 1910 and Frank was supposed to be with the Crick family. William and Charles I can't find anywhere. My grandfather didn't talk much about his life so what little my father and other relatives heard is hard to confirm. If you get this and want to visit let me know.

Have you contacted both the Dept. of Health, 600 East Capitol, Pierre, SD 57501 2536, and the Register of Deeds, Buffalo Co. Court House, Gann Valley, SD 57341? If neither has a birth certificate, contact the Social Security Administration for a copy of his application.

Do you know what church he attended? There might be a record of baptism or confirmation.

Do you know which school he attended? There were school censuses, but you might have difficulty finding them because some are packed away in the court house, and some were sent to Pierre.

Do you know when and where he married? The marriage record should give his age.

You won't find much information online for anyone that recent because the information on living persons is considered private and usually not posted.

The database of the 1930 Census, Buffalo County, SD, HUGHES

Jim A., b. ca. 1871

Velmer, 1898; Mabel, 1898; Ordway, 1924; Vila, 1925; Leveise, 1927; Jimmy, 1930.

Levi, 1901; Marie, 1905; Nellie, 1922; Robert & Bessie, 1925; Violet, 1928; Bennie, 1929.

Social Security Death Index (online) HUGHES:

Velmer (31 Aug. 1897, - Aug. 1983) last res. Sioux City, Woodbury, IA; SSN issued in Indiana
Levi (12 Oct. 1899 - May 1971) lr. Sioux City; SSN issued SD.
Ordway (16 Jan. 1924 - 3 Dec. 1998) lr. Omaha, Douglas, NE; SSN issued IN.

If you can find obituaries for the above, that should help. Then you can trace the family on the censuses, which show every member of the family back to the 1850 Census. The 1930 census is the most recent one open to the public. The actual census tells more than the database I quoted above.

Newton Edmunds, from SD, I'm not sure if it is Buffalo, SD. is from the Andrew Edmunds family. Records on Andrew in America put his birth in 1639. The family was in Providence, RI with many of the descendents moving to NY then points West including MI, IL, and SD.

There are several James Edmunds in the family including James IV who married Cordelia Spears. She died and he moved to Louisville, KY where he died in 1861. He did remarry in 1844 to Almira Waring.

What is the earliest Edmunds you have identified. I think there may be some early Edmunds from the MA area. Do you have any Ballards in the family? There are some biographies of James Lavender Edmunds on the Barren Co. site.

Edmunds Co. SD is named for Newton Edmunds, son of Robert Edmunds and Ester Gould. Newton was born in Hartland, NY in 1819 and married Margaret Eliza Heartt August 24, 1848 in MI I believe. He was the first governor of the Dakota Territories and is from the Andrew Edmunds (1639-1695) family.

Have come across the James Lavender family and wondered if there was any connection as James Edmunds b. February 15, 1806, died February 09,1861,in Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky. Please E-mail me for further information.

LaCroix Wells Families

I noticed the exchanges regarding the LaCroix and Wells families on the Buffalo County Web site.
Sarah Wells LaCroix and family were located in the area of Stephan Mission (Hyde Co.) by the early 1880s. She was either a widow or separated from her husband, but had with her at least 2 sons, Charles and Joseph, and at least 1 daughter, Jean with her.
I am not sure she was Catholic, but she was helpful to the "early day" priests when they were establishing the Mission. Somewhere I have her death date if it is needed.
I do not recall who Charles married, but he and his wife are buried down at Ft. Thompson. Sarah's daughter Jean married a Douglass and at one time lived in Highmore.
Joseph was musical, and was noted to have played for dances in Highmore in the 1880s.
I believe that Sarah was a sister of the Wells brothers who were located in the area of Ft. Thompson.

SD Births indicates that Frank KATILINEK & Fannie TUSA had son Frank C., b. 2 Apr. 1889, Buffalo Co.

The stay there might have been short. I don't see any land patents to show they were among the earliest settlers, and the more recent records on USGenWeb > SD > Buffalo Co. don't seem to have the name.
