My father was also born in Aberdeen in 1917, then adopted out. His biological surname was also Nelson. The story goes....his Nelson family already had a large family and could not afford another, so they put him up for adoption. Don't know how much truth there is to that. I did contact the county to see if I could get some records, it was a "closed" adoption and couldn't give me a lot of info. But did get some.

All I know of her biological family is what I posted. No name for her biological father, only that he was Irish, and died in WWI. On my mother's birth certificate it read "father unknown", but I got more information from adoption agency in Fargo, N.D. a year ago, regarding his Irish descent and how he died. I only know my mother's given name at birth (Anna Margaret Nelson), her mother's name: Anna Nelson age 21 in 1917 (born about 1896 in U.S.); Margaret may be significant, if it is a family name. Do you have any Margaret's in your family? My mother's adoption records also indicated that her mother Anna Nelson was of Irish and Norwegian descent. If she was single at time my mother was born 1917, then Nelson is her father's name (Is that possibly Irish? or likely Norwegian?). Your O'Donnell name is Irish, correct? If you could check your family tree, maybe that would help me. Since my mother Anna Margaret Nelson was adopted at age 1 year in 1919, I am wondering if her mother maybe died in the Flu Epidemic at that time. I would appreciate any information that might be helpful to me.

I see that your online family tree for Earle does not include 1910 or 1920 census enumerations or the name of his parents.

While searching for Earle in early records, I will type up possible family connections as I find them.

In the Aberdeen Daily News I find articles in 1927 and 1928 about Earle Running of Mobridge being part of University athletic teams.

A search for Mobridge, SD, in the 1930 census brought up a Stanley RUNNING, born about 1908 in SD to a father born in Norway.

In 1920 there is just one entry for a RUNNING in the Mobridge census: Arnold RUNNING, age 21, born SD about 1899, father born Norway.

This Arnold is found in the 1900 Aberdeen, Brown County, census.

In 1918 he was living in Mobridge.

His parents were listed as Jacob RUNNING and Mildred BLANCHARD.

Do you subscribe to Ancestry.com? Can you access this?

--------------------

The family is found in 1910 in Flora, Walworth County, SD, mis-transcribed as RUNCIMAN.

In this census enumeration you will find parents Jacob and Mildred, Earl aged 4, his brothers Arnold and Stanley and a sister Marian.

This should give you enough information to begin doing more research on your own.

Beth
not related

Earle Glenn Running

I don't think my last post went through. I am researching the Running family that lived in Aberdeen area in 1907 or there abouts. My cousin is 82 and would like to know more about his grandparents. All we know is that his father was born in 1906, 1907 or thereabouts in Aberdeen. He is shown on the census in Gregory County where he met my aunt Helga Beck. They were married and divorced. Earle Running's father was born in Norway and his mother in Minnesota. I wonder if they were Jacob and Mildred Running? But I can't find birth information for Earl Glenn Running.
