Hello Sandra,

I am so happy to hear from someone from "Tommy's" branch of the family. Thank you for the contact.

Your mother's sister, Evelyn Jane Shultz Butcher, went to South Dakota a couple of years ago, after visiting with me, and I asked her to look for the newspaper article about the death of William Roy Shultz........she was able to find it and sent me a copy. Her is my transcript of that article

ROY SHULTZ DIES IN CAR ACCIDENT THANKSGIVING EVE
Death came to Roy Shultz about midnight Thanksgiving in an auto accident at the edge of White Clay.
William Roy Shultz was born May 29, 1883 in Antelope County, Nebraska.
On April 4 1911, at Chadron, Nebraska, he was united in marriage with Miss Sophia Hansen of Antelope county. Three children were born of this union of which one passed away at birth.
His first year of marriage was spent in Rushville, Nebraska. The next year he moved to Antelope county where he spent one winter. The next spring he moved to Knox county where he farmed for six years. The next three years he farmed in Antelope county and the following year in Knox county.
In March, 1922 the family moved to Bennett county where he farmed for fourteen years. In February, 1936 he purchased a half interest in the White Star truck line, which he has operated since September, 1936.
The departed enjoyed good health nearly all his lifetime, never having been critically ill. The night of November 30 while on his regular Thursday trip with the truck, he stopped in White Clay and spent the evening until quite late visiting with his friends, Mr. and Mrs. Tyree in their cafe.
When he came out to continue with the truck, Mr. Shumway, the deputy sheriff, drove up with some folks he was taking out to their farm, a short distance from White Clay. On the return trip the car struck some loose dirt, rolling over twice. A number of people aided Mr. Shumway in taking the injured to Pine Ridge hospital where Mr. Shultz passed away thirty minutes later, at midnight.
Besides his sorrowful wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Clarence Johnson of Martin, one son, Thomas of Casper, Wyoming. His father, W. T. Shultz, two brothers and two sisters, all of Martin and vicinity. His mother passed away in November, 1930.
Funeral Services were held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Episcopal church in Martin, with Reverend Dallas Shaw of Allen in charge.
Interment was made at Gamble Cemetery. Pallberers were Lowell Schlecht, Thomas Taylor, Arthur Sanders, Robert Hines, Egan Lessert and George Smizer.

I am the granddaughter of "Mrs. Clarence Johnson" referred to in the above transcript. Evelyn Elizabeth Shultz, sister of William Thomas Shultz, your grandfather. You and I are 2nd cousins.

Please contact me if you would like at ksjscrib_city@yahoo.com

Looking forward to hearing from my 2nd cousin,
Kathy Johnson

Never mind, I just discovered the "Records Search" portion of Family Search, don't know how I missed that one, thank you! Now, just to see if I can somehow get my hands on some images of the original records. In particular, the marriage certificate of Anna and John T.

That marriage record of John T. and Anna Bennett is definitely them, but I have no idea why it lists the bride's name as Mary G. Moore! It did give me a marriage date that I had been looking for. Other than the census records I have with Anna Bennett (m. O'Bryant) in them (all except 1900), this is one of earliest pieces of information I have on Anna's life.

Thanks!

Andy

I finally had a few minutes to dig into some of the stuff you dug up. Where did you find this:

------------------------------
John Thomas O'BRYANT, 35 {sic}, wid., b. Urbana, Champaign Co., s/o Belle SENDEBASTER & Emmet HOLDING.

--Anna R. must have been Anna Rose.
------------------------------

You said above that that familysearch.org and beta.familysearch.org, but I keep coming up empty handed. I'm wondering perhaps what information you typed in to get these results? There are some great clues and info there if I can replicate your info!

Thanks!

Andy

Well, I actually have quite a bit more since then, but SD? No, not SD, not that I know of, did I post in the wrong forum? I suppose I meant to post in the BENNETT family site, did I goof up somewhere, I'm new here?

Here's what I have on Anna Bennet(t):

1. I said Bennet(t) because between her death certificate and documents signed by her son, her, and the orphanage she dropped my grandfather at, she's referred to as Bennett and Bennet.
2. My grandfather's birth name was Willie James O'Bryant. I did locate and allocate his birth certificate. The orphanage referred to him as Wille O Bryant. He was placed in foster care with the Boegli family in 1925, where he remained until adulthood. The name he assumed at the Boegli's residence was William James Boegli.
3. I do have everything on my grandfathers' life, including information about his mother, which led me to the fact that her name was Anna R. O'Bryant (haven't yet figured out the "R."). My grandfather married Lulu Elizabeth Atz, and had four children, including my mother, Lisa.
4. The information I have on Anna R. O'Bryant is far and inbetween. I have her birthday, from several documents. Most of them list her birthday as March 17, 1886. On her death certificate, her son, Franklin, signed off her date of birth as May 17, 1890. Since all the census data I have acquired designates her as being born around March 17th, 1886, I've included that as her official birth date (along with other documents I've acquired). I still haven't found her in the 1890 census. She wasn't in the 1880 census since she wasn't born until 1886, and the 1890 census burnt up (real bummer!!).
5. Anna R. Bennett married John Thomas O'Bryant (no marriage date). They had four children: Ruth (b:1910 - d:1925), Leona (b:1905), Robert (b:1907) and Franklin T. (b:1913-d:1970). I just recently found Franklins' grave in Sunset Cemetery, Galloway, OH. There exists a grave in Rosedale Cemetery in Ohio that has all six of them listed, but only Ruth and Franklin were buried there.
6. Anna had an affair with a state lawyer George Waite, that resulted in the conception of my grandfather. Anna and John T. never divorced, but did seperate.
7. Anna O'Bryant committed suicide in 1951.

That's what I have on Anna! I hope maybe you or somebody else might have something more. I will check the websites you suggested and see if I might come up with something more.

Thank you,

Andrew Diamond

What information do you have on your BENNETT family in Bennett County, SD? Did you intend to place your posts on the BENNETT family site?

It's best to work from the known to the unknown. What was the name of your grandfather? Have you found him on the online Social Security Death Index? Do you have your grandfather's death certificate and obituary? Can you be more specific about when and where Anna BENNETT was born or when and where she married O'BRYANT and the names of their children?

Pilot.FamilySearch.org is very helpful for the 1900 census, and FamilySearch.org has a database of the 1880 census. Google "1930 census" to find some information for other years. I looked on these but without more specific dates or places, I couldn't find your family.

Finally found some documentation on my grandfather, and who his mother was. Her name is listed as Anna Bennett, and also Annie Bennett. We are pretty sure her real name was Anna Bennett as my grandfather told the story to my mother. I am looking for information about her and her parents, which are documented as Frank and Eva Bennett. Anna married an O'Bryant, but that is all I can find about him or her. Anna was one of several children, and she herself had a few. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, gsimmons75, your message was posted on the Bennett County, South Dakota, site. Do you think your BENNETT family lived there?

In Denver, CO, 1910, BENNETT: James, 43; Ada, 40
Murt, 12; Agnes, 10; Clyde, 8; James, 6; Hazel, 4; & Howard, 2.
[Google "1930 census."]

The ages must have just been estimates because the children are exactly two years apart. However, it's strange that Howard's age would be that far off if he was six months old. The free online California Death Index has Howard BENNETT (13 Dec. 1909, CO - 22 Oct. 1980, L.A. County) mother's maiden name EMFIELD [IMFELDT/ENFIELD]. Social Security Death Index (online, free) verifies the dates and says last residence was Pico Rivera, Los Angeles County, SSN issued Missouri.

Ada must have been of Browns Grove, Pawnee, KS, 1880, ENFIELD
Eli, 47, PA PA PA; wf. There is a fairly complete online marriage index for Illinois, but there are 88 listings for James BENNETT, and several in the late 1850's.

I'm Looking for a lookup in the Bennett Co. Cemetery records on any Baker family who might be buried there?

I'm Looking for info on the parents of a Jim Baker who was born in South Dakota on Jan. 17, 1915. My friend says Jim had a brother named George, his father was named Thompson Baker & his mother Elizabeth. This is about all she knows on them... Jim married in Iowa in 1939 & joined the Army in 1945, discharged in 1948 & she has his military papers but looking for more info on his parents.

I could find no Thompson's in South Dakota census on Ancestry nor any Jim's in 1920 or 1930

So I was Searching 1920 census records I found a listing of Robert J. Baker in Bennett co, township 37, - 5 yrs old,

living with George E. BAKER 45, born ILL, father b. in France (list Turkish? beside it), mother b. in PA.
wife Josie E. 36 yrs old, b. ILL both parents b. in ILL.
Alex M Baker 17, b. Ill
George D. 16, b. ILL
Robert J. 5 b. South Dakota
Josephine M. Baker 1 8/12 b. South Dakota

In 1930 census, Martin, Bennett co SD
Geo E. Baker 54,
Daisy M. Baker 51, b. KS, OH, KS
Geo Baker 26, IL IL IL
Robert Baker 15, So Dakota IL IL
indexed as Joseph (but it's Josephine 12,
Iris Satter looks like a S. before Daughter? stepdaughter?? 18, b. Neb, ILL, KS, works at the Beauty Shop
Dorothy Peterson 21 Boarder

I'm wondering if Thompson was a nickname for George E. ?
Josie E.'s middle name maybe could have been Elizabeth?
& Jim's first name was Robert? Robert Jim perhaps...?

& If Josie E. died between 1920 & 1930
& George E. had remarried to Daisy M & her daugher Iris Satter b. in NEb was Daisy's daughter from another marriage is living with them?? hum? or do I have the wrong family for Jim Baker?

Thanks for any help on these folks you can send my way.
Treasure the time & help finding info on them.
Happy Trails on all your researching too.
Kim Dresser
Western Plains Genealogy Society
Weatherford, Okla.

I guess I am looking for any information at all. This is one of my "grasping at straws" queries. William Calkins' mother was a sister to my husband's ancestor, Abigail Brown, who is one of my serious dead ends. I am hoping I can find some sliver of a clue that will help me to locate information for his mother. I know from census records that he was b. in NE, but cannot locate him with his family there. I appreciate your reply and will try to persue further information from death records or an obit.

thank you so much for your reply

Not sure what kind of information you are looking for. The South Dakota State Archives has a searchable database of cemetery records - http://apps.sd.gov/applications/DT58Cemetery/
There are several Calkins listed in this database, including:

Fannie S. Calkins
Death date: 02-01-1963
Lot: 2
City: Martin
County: Bennett
Cemetery: Our Lady of Sacred Heart

William Calkins
Death date: 1949
Lot: 3
City: Martin
County: Bennett
Cemetery: Our Lady of Sacred Heart

"This searchable database includes records that were cataloged as part of the WPA Cemetery Project (pre-1940s) plus any cemetery updates that our office has received. It is not a complete listing of all the burials in South Dakota."

Hello Jenny... I have just seen your reply.
My partner is descended from Arthur BENNETT born 1852, son of Charles BENNETT 1823 – 1901 & Ann BATES 1831 - ?. I suspect Charles was a brother of George William Bennett, and they were both sons of Robert BENNETT 1789 – 1858? & Charlotte ? 1790 – 1862.
In 1851, Robert BENNETT age 62 was publican of the SHIP INN, Upwell, Norfolk, and farming 40 acres. Francis White's History, Gazetteer and Directory of Norfolk 1854 mentions him as Publican of the Ship Inn, Lakes End.
Robert Bennett was publican from 1841 – 1858, followed by his son George William BENNETT as publican and farmer from 1865 – 1883.
Henry Robert BENNETT was publican from 1888 – 1904. Another relative?
You can contact me at allennef at yahoo dot ca

Hi, my great grandmother was Sarah Louella Bell Saxton. She wrote a book for the family about her life growing up. It includes pictures of some Boesels and also her family. The line is very convoluted: SLB's mother married her stepfather when her own mother passed away. This created half brothers and sisters as well and the step-sibs that were from a previous marriage. I think I've sorted a lot of it out from the book. If you are interested please contact me.
Karen

Just read your posting about the Earl Joseph Boesl posting. Are you still interested in information? Earl Boesl married Ada Vaughn. I would really be interested in any information you have on the Saxtons and Earl Joseph.

Sadly, I was doing a Google search on the Boesl clan, because Earlene died yesterday, November 13th. The only one from that generation that is left is Bonnie. My grandfather was Albert. I have always been interested in Boesl family history, we still have annual Boesl - Vaughn reunions. Earl's father John J has been in several book about a confrontation he had with Sitting Bull (I think, I would have to get out my stuff to really remember).

Hope to hear from you,

DeAnna Hedger
News article or Obituary for Roy William Shultz

I am looking for some information about a car accident that killed my Great Grandfather, Roy William Shultz. He lived south of Swet in Bennett Co., South Dakota and died in some kind of an accident on or about Nov. 30, 1939. The accident occured either in Bennett County or in Sheridan Co., Nebraska. Roy was born 5-29-1894 in Nebraska and was married to Sophia E. Hansen at the time of his death. She later married Bill Lynn and continued to live in Bennett County until her health was not good, when she moved to Silver City, New Mexico and died 10-1-1978. They are both buried in the "Gamble Cemetery" or St. Katherine's Episcopal Cemetery, which is located in the vicinity of their residence.
Thank you for any help that you can give me.
Kathy Johnson
