The family is on the census of 1900, which you can see at the pilot site of FamilySearch.org. They're in Gilbert Twp., Hand County, SD, GLIDDEN
George, b. Oct. 1869, IL NY IL, m. 10 y.
A. Mary, b. Nov. 1869, IA VT NY, 5 children, but the last was not named, and I cannot decipher the next youngest. Also the dates do not agree with the SD Births site. Check it out.

SD Births to George GLIDDEN & Mary GREGORY, Hand County:
Mae, 7 Nov. 1890      {M. May, Nov. '91?}
John, 28 Nov. 1892   {Elwood, Nov. '93?}
Orson, 11 Feb. 1901
Almira, 25 July 1903
Phoebe, 26 Dec. 1905, but filed 24 Feb. 1905
Richard, 17 Apr. 1907.

Did they move to Flathead Co., MT? Google "1930 census" for some information. The free data is incomplete, but it can help you find where to look on microfilm of the actual census.

Sorry, no entries for GLIDDEN in the Wessington book. The GLIDDEN family in Beadle County is in Hitchcock/Altoona Township (north central Beadle County)--Athur J., wife Elva A. (LYON), children Ernest L, Maude Irene, and Jessie. Arthur and Elva were both born in DeKalb County, Illinois.

You may want to try Carolyn's Hand County website--Wessington is both in Beadle and Hand Counties.
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~handcosd/

I'm researching George and MaryAnn Glidden. They had several chilcren born in that area between 1890 and 1910. I'm not where my records are just now, but Mae Mathilda and John Ellwood are two of them. What I'd really love to find is George and MaryAnn's marriage documentation " )
Thanks for checking!

If you don't get any help via the message board, you could also try:
1. A letter to Roger Kasa c/o the Plainsman for his column "Do You Remember" in the weekly free PayDay advertising newspaper.
2. A letter to the Wessington Senior Center.
3. A letter to the Wolsey-Wessington newspaper (published at Miller now, I think).
4. Try contacting the Beadle Co. Equalization office (Huron)--they can go from the street address to the legal description. The assessment information should disclose if there is still a structure there.
5. Write a letter c/o Resident.

Sheryl Hickle
Beadle Co. Genealogy & History

I have relatives who lived in Wessington in the late 1880s and early 1900s. I found an address for them listed on the 1910 census and wondered if there is still a house at that location. Looking for anyone living in the area of Commercial street who might be able to swing by #191. The census didn't say if it was Commercial North or South, but looking at Google maps, I'd guess probably south?
Thanks so much!
Lori/Kirkland, WA

There are death certificates at the State Dept. of Health in Pierre, SD, and at the Register of Deeds of the county of death. For Huron, that would be Beadle County. State law is stricter about proof of relationship if you ask for a death certificate, so, try the Register of Deeds, Beadle County Court House, Huron, SD 57350. The fee keeps going up, so I do not know the current price.

Looking for any family of August Anderson b. abt 1867 in Sweden or family of Wilhelmina "Minnie" Lauterbach b. abt 1872 in Germany. They had one known daughter, Olive. born 1 Oct 1894 in Huron. By 1910 the family is in King Co., Washington.

Olive married several times: Mr. H. E. Shannnon of Washington; Mr. Ratchford; and Lowery Higgins in 1941 in Mina, Mineral, Nevada. I don't think she had any children.

I have her birth record and marriage certificate for Olive to Lowery Higgins. Would like to find Anderson or Lauterbach family to give records to.

I have not found Myrtle yet in the 1900 census even though I have looked very hard for her. It is possible that she was with her mother. It is also possible that she was with her father in Iowa because there are mistakes with Menno's record in 1900. Per the oral family history, Myrtle came to Iowa with her father Menno sometime between 1895 - 1900. She is listed with her father in the 1895 South Dakota census for Lake Bryon township in Beadle county. I do know that she moved to California in 1903 with her sister, Bertha.

THANK YOU so very much for the info! Myself and other researchers wondered about him and Harriet as much was not said or recorded. The 1904/05 wedding date was arrived at from the info provided in the 1920/30 census. George had noted to census taker that he was 47 when married. He was 62 in 1920 which was 15year thus the 1904/05 date. It could have 1903 or even 1902 but in 1901 Harriet and Barnes were married and had their last child. I am not for sure they were married in SD. It could have happened elsewhere. Any info is appreciated. Many of our male members of the tree lack info due to the "brick walls" found in this family and other members.

Looking for info on George W Brown in SD

Looking for George W Brown born around 1857-58 in Illinois and wound up in South Dakota and married Harriet Farrington Barnes - her second marriage. The family shows up on the 1920 and 1930 census but does not show up on any family lines or trees. George would have been 47 at his first marriage which seems a little odd. Could he have been married and widowed or even divorced prior to this 1904-04 union? Let me know at my email of illady45@hotmail.com

Wonderful! In 2002-2004, I did some research for a "DA" on this same family so I alerted her to your offer. (Hope her last email address is valid.) Otherwise, I'm interested for the Beadle County files.

Sheryl Stearns Hickle
Beadle Co. SD Genealogy & History

Is their marriage date of 1904 from the census? I don't have a record of a BROWN & BARNES marriage in Beadle County in that time period.

Harriet C. BROWN and George W. BROWN were divorced 14 Nov 1935 in Beadle County.
Source:Evening Huronite, 14 Nov 1935, p11.
There may be more information in the actual divorce papers (Clerk of Courts office).

George seems to be quite elusive. There is a second George W. BROWN 1861-1935 in Beadle County, the son of Jacob & Sarah BROWN.

Note: In the 1900 US Census, the next family enumerated after William A. and Carrie BARNES is David H. and Clarinda W. BROWN. However, their birthplaces do not match George W.'s parents' birthplaces (1920:IN & OH; 1930:IL & IL).

Sheryl Hickle
Beadle Co.
You can find the BARNES-FARRINGTON marriage at:
Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, 1763–1900
www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/marrsrch.html

Harriet BROWN died 12 Aug 1943 Beadle co., SD.
Source:Ancestry.com - South Dakota Death Index, 1905-1955.

The Wessington Cemetery is just across the border in Hand County. That's probably where she was buried.

Sheryl Hickle
Beadle Co. SD Genealogy & History

Both are buried in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Huron, Beadle, South Dakota.
--Lloyd Bruce LOBAN, died:11 Dec 1980, burial lot:Christus [section], Block 105, Lot "D", Grave 3.
--Winifred (HOLCOMB) LOBAN, died:13 Jun 2000.

I don't have her lot numbers, but I would guess she's in Grave 4.
