I know it was a long shot but sometimes they work out. You may have posted information (or have copies of it) on findagrave about your great-grandfather. If not here is a link that contains pics of tombstones/death certificates/obituaries for Millard, his 2nd wife, and 3 of his children. Two of his childrens death certificates identify their mother as Emma McCarley.

Thanks Richard for the help but unfortunately it wasn't her. My great grandfather's name was Millard C. Cannon. She was probably buried in Spartanburg, SC. Although I did find him & his 2nd wife in Union Cnty., SC in 1900. Since there isn't an 1890 census, I don't know when he moved there.

African American Murrell families in Williamsburg County, SC

I am looking for information on my Murrell ancestors in the county. They lived pin the Crossroads Community and many are buried in Belser Crossroad Cemetary or Big Springs Cemetary on Greeleyville. I have found some information on the children of Billy and Elizabeth Murrell but have hit the brick wall of slavery; getting information pre-1870. Below is some of what I know:

Billy Murrell born about 1834 (according to the 1870
Williamsburg County census but on
the 1880 Federal Census he is listed as being born
in 1820). I would like to pinpoint, if possible,
his mother or father. I am assuming that they were
slaves and owned by the Murrell or Staggers family.

Elizabeth (maiden name is Rollinson or Robinson
according to the death certificates of two of the
children) Murrell- she was born in 1840. I am not
sure if her family was from Williamsburg County or
not.

Billy Jr. ( he is my great grandfather ) he is born
in 1865 or 1869 depending on which census you go by.

Pinckney Murrell born in 1862- I found info on him
in some of the subsequent federal census' but I want
to know if he was ever married and to who.

Frony Murrell- born about 1868- I have her death
certificate- she had children but I wanted to know
their names and father, which I couldn't find in any
federal census, though she is listed as either married or widowed on 1900-1930 census.

Longstreet Murrell- He was born in 1864; I have yet
to find any other info on him anywhere.

Virginia Murrell- born 1872; I have travel her married name as Nelson

Florence Murrell- born 1874

Lizzy- born 1875

Lucy- born 1879

I am also interested in finding out about a man
named Cain Primas. On the 1880 federal census he is
listed as a relative living with kinfolk do to old
age. He was born around 1800. A local historian noted that the name is Painas Cain and is a woman who was Billy Sr's mother.

My grandfather, Paul Murray (the name somehow changed after both his parents died in early childhood) went on to be the first African American elected to office post-reconstruction in the county, in 1967 when he ran successfully, with the help of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr,, for the county road commissioner.

"In 1978, in his quest to find out more about his Eaves line, Dr. Robert (Bob) Wendell Eaves Sr., of Washington, DC, (born in Rutherford County, NC) became acquainted with Curtis and Gladys Jacobs of Fields, LA. In 1976 Bob Eaves had organized a successful reunion in Spindale, NC. Descendents of his great-great grandfather, Andrew Eaves attended. After much correspondence between the Jacobs and Bob Eaves, Bob started to plan a reunion in Spindale, NC in the summer of 1979 and invite as many Eaves and Eaves descendents as he and the Jacobs could contact. Spindale was selected because of the vast majority of Eaves contacted were descendents of Graves Eaves II, who came from Brunswick County, Virginia and settled in Rutherford County, NC in 1775.

Unfortunately Bob Eaves Sr passed away in January 1979 before he could fulfill his dream of a reunion for the descendents of Graves Eaves II. Although he could not get the reunion back on track for 1979 Bob Eaves Jr., (son of Bob Eaves Sr.,) of Atlanta, GA after meeting with the Jacobs, organized what was to be the first nationwide Eaves Family reunion. The first reunion was held at the Isothermal Community College in Spindale, NC. At one time Andrew Eaves (mentioned above) owned land at the community called “Frog Level” and it is believed that part of the college campus is on that property.

Besides notifying everyone on Dr. Bob’s list and the Jacob’s list, Bob Jr., sent notices to 97 newspapers mostly in the Sunbelt states. A terrific response was received from these announcements and approximately 150 “cousins” showed up with 127 signing the register for the first reunion on June 22, 1980. Fourteen states (NC, SC, GA, FL, MD, OK, CA, TN, KY, MS, NY, AL, AR, and IL) were represented at the reunion.

Do you have any proof that Jemima Green is the daughter of George William Green and Mary Justice? This shows up in several genealogies, but I'm skeptical.

I've been searching for any documentation and have found none. And none of the information I can find on George William Green and Mary Justice indicates they ever had a daughter Jemima, nor any reference to a son-in-law Stephen Potter. There's lots of documentation on their other children; you'd think there would be something, somewhere, on their supposed oldest daughter Jemima...

I'd love to have any documentation you can provide.

She was born in 1856 in Spartanburg, SC. I have her in the 1860 & 1870 census, but after that she disappears. Suppossedly she married my great grandfather in 1878, but I don't have proof. They had 5 children, 2 of which died as infants. He married his 2nd wife in 1895, so Emma would have died before then. Any information with proof as to when they married, when she died, and where she is buried, would be greatly appreciated.

Have been trying to find anyone with a connection to the Aytes Family that might have relatives that migrated to South Carolina. I am a descendant of the Aytes (through my Mom) and have run into a roadblock. I have gone back to 1825 to a John H. Aytes born about 1825 and have been unable to find any other info on him. Had a male relative do the DNA test in 2009 and have not had one match in four years. Any suggestions?

Have checked their micro fiche for deaths for any Aytes during that time. Will have to go check again for computer printouts. None of the cemeteries here in town have any listing for him being buried in any of them. His wife is listed in the 1880 City Directory as a widow so I checked the records before then for his death. No luck. Will continue to look and if I find something, I will let you know.

I live locally and have spent many hours in the library and found some info but nothing on John H. Aytes. I don't know where he was born so he might have left the state and went back to his home state. I'll keep digging. Thanks for the help.

I already have all of this info from my Mom's family records. She saved everything for which I am grateful. I have been unable to find any death dates for John H. Aytes. It's like he just appeared out of the sky and left the same way. I have been to the local cemeteries and they do not have any information on him either. I have put in a call to the local funeral homes to see if they would be willing to look into their archives but I haven't received anything from them yet. Thanks for looking. I appreciate the help

According to this, Charleston County Public Library has

"In-house indexes: Death Indexes: Charleston Death Card File - alphabetical by name card file index of primarily Charleston City Deaths 1819-1926"

and

"Bound printouts of computer database of Charleston City Deaths 1819-1868 - arranged by name, cause of death, and place of internment"

If you email their reference librarian, then he/she should be able to check to see if John H. Aytes' death is listed in the card file or in the printouts.

Perhaps his father is buried at the same cemetery? If you can find his death information, his parents MIGHT be listed in the records. You also might be able to get an exact birth date for him.

I checked findagrave.com and John E. Aytes is listed, but not his father. That doesn't prove that the father is not there, though. You should be able to contact the cemetery and ask...

Does anyone know if Stephen Wannamaker was Dayton's son?

Stephen Wannamaker Crawford June 12 1885-May 15 1954 a Policeman in Charleston SC died of gunshot wound married Margaret Haynes born 1886 they had 4 daughters and one son.

Dayton Wesford Crawford July 22 1842-Jan 23 1901 Berkeley County SC s/o Levi Louis Crawford 1801-1852 and Amanda Phillips 1808-1875 married Martha Jane Bishop Mar 11 1855-Oct 14 1914, thier children, Lillian, Mattie, Gordon, and Stephen born abt 1886. Thanks for any info.

Hello, Im looking for any photos or info of any kind on my great-great grandfather ESP Bellinger. Any info on his son Lucien Bellinger equally appreciated. They lived in the area of Walterboro,SC before, during and after the Civil War. I know ESP signed the Ordiance of Secession and was a Capt in the Confederate Army. I also know that Lucien served as a young aide to Robert E Lee but thats all the info I have.

My great grandfather was George Lathrop Duren, born September 27,1866, died July 31, 1955. He had nine siblings. His first wife was Arah L. Duren, born June 5, 1872, died August 9, 1895. They had one daughter, Ola Belle Duren Carter. He married Rosetta Vick in 1890. They lived in Thomasville, Georgia
His parents were William NathanielDuren born in Gwinette County, Georgia September 27, 1824 and his mother was Frances Elizabeth Flowers a native of Gwinette County and the daughter of James and Minera (Chandler) Flowers.

Not sure if DNA helps....even with a surname I have problems connecting with past surnames...
Was your name changed at adoption, your adoption family has no records ?
Have you contacted the agency or religious order that handled your adoption?
Have you posted on ancestry (adoption message board)...?
Probably get some good suggestion on what you need to do.

josiah patterson blair was born in south carolina in 1818. he married nancy ann mcclain born in 1824 in lauderdale, alabama.I would love to find something on my gggrandfather's family. been searching for years. his father's name may have been john thomas blair of south carolina. mother could have been mary jane mccullar. one of them was cherokee or both but it is not listed anywhere I have looked. maybe they weren't registered as many were not but I know they were cherokee. my grandmother told me so many beautiful stories of her mother Leanne Elizabeth Blair and I want to do this for her. I have info on all of josiah and nancy's children but i need to find their parents and further back. my grandmother was such a beautiful lady and I want to find where all this beautiful soul came from thank you

Henry Brazell was born in 1823 in Alabama and his wife Mariah Brazell and she was born in 1838 in Alabama the name of the message were Henry children were listed as Mullatto in the 1870 Census and which could mean his kids were indian instead of black and
Indians were not listed as Indiean before 1880 they were either whire or mullatto if you no any thing about them

Leroy Smith b 1814 SC

Hello all,

I need help on Leroy Smith, b 1814 in SC and married to Elizabeth Tankersly and had one son, Benjamin Harrison Smith in 1850. The 1850 Census has him Cherokee Co, AL right after Benjamin was born. From there its tricky. Family history says he ran off to Texas to fight in the Mexican-American War, which was already completed, and meet up with his older sister (we don't know anything about her). We can find an 1870 census in Angelina Co, Texas.

Or, he found another gal to marrie for a few years in Alabama, joined up with the 9th Alabama Cavalry as a Sgt, captured and died in a prison camp in 1865 in Indiana.

Any and all help would be appreciated!

We have no information on his parents or location in SC that he was born. SOme will try to say he was a son of Col Isaac Smith, but I have talked with the Spartansburg Historical Society and they have no evidence of a son by the name Leroy in any will or description of the family.
