My g g g g g g grandafather, Gypsy James Smith, lived in Pendleton Co. after the Revolutionary War. He was born in 1738 probably in Virginia and died in Pendleton Co in 1833-35. His son, James Smith, married one Nancy Burden, a Cherokee woman about 1809.
Family first names during that period were:
David, b. 1812
William, b 1815
James, 1820
Walter T. or Waddy, b 1825
Alfred, b. 1826
Eliza
Peggy
Nancy
Mary or Polly
He was provided bounty land for his service. But when he died, the family lost the land and moved on to TN, then KY and finally IN.
Gypsy James was white and/or Native American but not African American... or so my DNA test says. However, the family has always lived with and near African Americans intermarrying with the Pettifords, Weavers, Burdens and with Native Americans, the Bears.
Any assistance someone could provide me would be greatly appreciated. We have hit a brick wall and it is centered in what was Pendleton Co.
I am willing to trade look ups and research with someone about this matter. I do volunteer genealogical research for people all the time. I am willing to pay for the obvious expenses.
Please respond. Thank you.
Jim Smith
