I am amazed to receive a reply to my 2000 post, and I thank you very much. I have been to the cemetery many times since then.
Is there a record of any persons buried there who do not have a grave marker? Bird J Lowe lived in the Cherokee springs Community when he died, but the Lowes at Liberty are his family. We have found nothing to indicate his burial, but we have learned that his father was William Murry, his mother was Rosannah Lowe, daughter of Lt John Low(e)
I am virtually certain that David Louis Poole's parents were James Poole (1762-after 1830) and Rebecca Stovall Poole of Spartanburg, South Carolina. David's name shows up alongside several other Pooles from this family in Spartanburg deeds from 1812 through 1832, and I believe he must be a brother to Elijah Poole, Elisha Poole, and George Washington Poole. The earliest deed that David Louis Poole witnesses is dated 1812, so I don't think he was born in 1800. I think it had to be about 1795 or earlier. More info on this family is in my Ancestry.com family tree, "Thomas Hall Family Tree."
-- Tom Hall, Greenville, SC

Aaron Jr. was married to Rachel Adams and they had a son Rowland Miles Arnold married to Mary Margaret Cox. Rowland and Mary left Spartanburg, S.C. and went to Ga.
I've not been able to trace back any further than Aaron Sr. If you can be of assistance, I would greatly appreciate it.

Lamb Family Reunion: Oct. 12, 2013

The Lamb Family Reunion will be held Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Princeton Tourist Welcome Center in Princeton, KY. All family members (descendants of Thomas Lamb and Longshore Lamb) and friends of the family are invited to attend.

A ceremony to erect a tombstone for John Lamb and Mary (Clayton) Lamb will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 12 at the Lamb Family Cemetery in Scottsburg, KY, just outside of Princeton. Descendants of John and Mary and other Lamb family members contributed to this special project earlier this year to make funding possible for the tombstone.

After the ceremony, a catered, Southern style lunch will be served at the Princeton Tourist Welcome Center with a special guest speaker, Brenda Joyce Jerome. Jerome is well known for her extensive genealogy research, focusing primarily on Western Kentucky. She has written more than 40 genealogy volumes that have proven invaluable for researchers across the country, including for the Lamb family.

For more information, email Linda Lamb Monticelli (rlmflm@aol.com) or Matthew T.
George W. West, b. abt. 1819 in Spartanburg, SC

Hello,

I'm trying to solve a genealogical mystery that involves an ancestor who was most likely born in Spartanburg County in 1819. Any help - or any connections with cousins researching the same line - would be much appreciated!

The ancestor is George W. West, b. abt. 1819 in Spartanburg County, SC. In about 1840, he married Jennet (Jenny) Cowan, b. about 1816 in Country Antrim, Ireland.

They showed up in the Union County, SC censuses in 1840 and 1850. In about 1853, they moved to Georgia, settling in Forsyth County in about 1854. (I'm not sure where they lived for one year before settling in Forsyth County, which is part of the mystery!)

I've detailed all this info in a blog post: http://bit.ly/10kuqt7

Basically, I want to confirm or deny whether my George W. West is the son of George West and Edith Colista McHanie (from probably Spartanburg County, SC and died in Gilmer County, GA.)

I've seen genealogies with my George included with this family, but haven't yet found a record to prove that he belongs in that group. On the other hand, many genealogies leave him out.

If you have any information about this family, please contact me. I've worked them very hard and have a lot to share with you, too.

Tangentially, I'm also interested in the West descendants who carried on further west from Forsyth County, Georgia. Many of George W. West's children went to Arkansas, and I would love to reconnect.

Thanks and happy detecting!

Marguerite,

I'm researching Spartanburg natives Dr. Thomas Miles BRAGG (1793-1882) and his brother Zebulon D. BRAGG (abt 1796-1857), both of whom eventually went to Alabama where they died. They were HEIRS of a Zebulon Bragg who died before April 1807 in Spartanburg, and I'm assuming he was their father. Dr. Thomas named a son (born 1827) "Zebulon."

See Spartanburg Deed Book R (in Pruitt's Deed Book abstracts], pp. 150-151:

Apr. 3, 1807 -- Thomas M. Bragg and Zebulon D. Bragg is named in his 1882 Alabama obituary as "Thomas Miles Bragg," born Dec. 28, 1793 in Spartanburg -- so there's no doubt that's his full name and that he's the same person as "Thomas M. Bragg" in other Spartanburg records of that time period.

Various family trees and published lineage books have conflicting information about the MILES family connection to BRAGGS. Was Thomas Miles Bragg named for a grandfather? Can you help?

I'm always glad to share research notes.

Annie
anniecrenshaw@centurytel.net
Have you done a DNA test through FTM? It has help us...since you are a male and have the last name of Pruett...you could be tested to see what Pruett family you fit into. Then join the Pruett/Pruitt/Prewitt group at http://groups.ancestry.com/group/60509555 - if you haven't already done so.

In the photograph you have, are they in uniform? If so can you blow it up enough to identify the insignia? If you could, they you should be able to track Melvin's military service. Another possibility would be to get Charles William Caldwell's military records and find out exactly what units were in the same area with him. Then check those units for Melvin.
Without knowing whether Melvin was regular US military or a State unit, I can't recommend where to start looking.
Jane

This is the one I've been most suspicious about for years. The family seems to have moved from Greenville County to Spartanburg County sometime between 1900 and 1910.

William and two wives are buried in the Campobello First Baptist Church Cemetery in Campobello, Spartanburg County.

Melvin is buried in the New Prospect First Baptist Church Cemetery in New Prospect, Spartanburg County.

I'm hoping that someone with local knowledge of (and perhaps a connection to) this CALDWELL line will recognize something in my posts and provide some proof of relationship.

Again, thanks!

Thanks for the response. The birth certificate noted was actually a Delayed Birth Certificate, requested by, and with information supplied by, Charles William CALDWELL himself on 08/21/1954. (I have a copy.)

Charles (my grandfather) actually knew little about his father other than the name William. His information about his mother was a little better: she actually was from Bladen County, North Carolina, up the Cape Fear River from Wilmington.

Charles was in a Florida National Guard unit on the Mexican Border, and there met his "cousin" Melvin Caldwell from "Carolina". I have a picture of the two of them together in uniform, probably taken in Laredo, Texas.

I have been pursuing this mysterious William CALDWELL for many years--maybe this will be my lucky year!

Again, thanks!

I am trying to find my mysterious greatgrandfather CALDWELL (supposedly William, possibly another given name) who:

- Was born about 1870 in South Carolina (perhaps Spartanburg County).
- Went to north Florida (Lafayette/Suwannee Counties) in the late 1880's.
- Married Anna Eliza TURNER in Lafayette supposedly 04/08/1888.
- Fathered two children in Live Oak, Suwannee (Queen Victoria Novabelle, 09/15/1889; Charles William, 08/31/1892).
- Left that family and returned to South Carolina.
- MAY have had a younger relative (brother or cousin?) named Melvin who served with a National Guard unit in Texas during the Mexican Border Disturbances before World War I.

Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Wow, great info--thanks. I'm a little confused about Elizabeth's mother, Fadie. I've looked it up an many sources know of a Phady or Fadie Sumner Kemp, so at first I assumed it was the same person as Elizabeth's mother. This SUMNER is the daughter of Alexander Chestnutt Kemp and Sarah Sumner. Any thoughts or anything you can find through public records?

Ressiey's parents appear to be JJ & Elizabeth Youmans of Emanuel County, Georgia in 1900 census. They are buried at Hawhammock Cemetery in Emanuel County. Elizabeth should have a death certificate on the Georgia Virtual Vault.

I don't know of any place named Lawson's Fork, just the creek.
The old Glendale iron bridge which is no longer used, is one of my favorite places to visit. Lots of fond memories.
Harold Lamar Youmans--PLEASE HELP!!!

I'm seeking info on my paternal grandfather, Harold Lamar Youmans. He was apparently married to my grandmother, born Matilda Ruth Bowlin, born 1935, died 1996, however, their marriage has never been confirmed. She lived in Kannapolis, North Carolina. I have seen photos of Harold, or at least who we've been told was Harold. According to stories, he left the family when my dad was very young. I am hoping to find info about their marriage, which if it really did occur, probably took place before 1954, when my father was born. I am seeking info in Spartanburg, because from my own research, the only Harold Lamar Youmans I could find died there in 1976. I am hoping to hear any stories, birth, death, marriage information available. My father was not listed in his obituary with his other children, so either he is the wrong Harold Lamar, or he is the same person, and simply had no contact with my father.

Any information is greatly appreciated!!!

SPARTANBURG CEMETERY GPS PROJECT UPDATE

Recently, AERIAL VIEW enhancement links have been added to the following SC Cemetery GPS Project webpages.

ABBEVILLE http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/01-abbev...

ANDERSON http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/04-ander...

GREENVILLE http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/23-green...

LAURENS http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/30-laure...

NEWBERRY http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/36-newbe...

OCONEE http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/37-ocone...

PICKENS http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/39-picke...

SPARTANBURG http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/42-spart...

NOTE: This project cannot provide you with cemetery tombstone inscriptions.

In many counties, local Genealogical/Historical Societies have compiled Cemetery Survey Books that they have For-Sale. Normally, if survey books are available, the book's Surname Indexes will be available on-line for searching. This will give you the ability to determine what tombstone inscriptions each book contains.

1. Project’s MAP VIEW links will provide you with printable cemetery finding Road Maps.

2. Projects’ AERIAL VIEW links (NEW) will provide you with an overhead satellite view of the cemetery.

3. Google’s STREET VIEW will provide you with a view of the cemetery, as if you were standing on a nearby main road, and looking towards the cemetery.

This is a non-copyrighted project and you can reuse any of the on-line info as you see fit.

Paul Kankula
