Thanks for your response. I've learned a lot about the Perrys since I posted this message and unfortunately I am way to busy right now (school is reconvening) to do any genealogy. But thanks for writing, sounds like we might be distant cousins!

Chelsea

LAURENS AND NEWBERRY COUNTIES, SOUTH CAROLINA: SALUDA AND LITTLE RIVER SETTLEMENTS 1749-1775. Jesse Hogan Motes, III and Margaret Peckham Motes. 2nd printing 1999. 292 pages. Name/place index. ISBN 0-89308-501-4. Price $35.50 plus mailing. Winner of the 1995 National Genealogical Society Award for Excellence, Methods and Sources. This is a major work for researching early inhabitants of the region that became a part of Laurens and Newberry Counties. Using full page neighborhood maps of land tracts granted by the colony, it traces the settlement of the Saluda River and Little River regions from 1749-1775. This book is more than just maps. Over 1200 South Carolina colonial land records are abstracted and fully cited. These records include the Colonial Plats and Memorials of Land Titles for every land tract that is used in the maps. Petitions for land, 1749-1775, are abstracted. These records are important sources of information on early inhabitants, including; (1) dates that the land petitions were submitted to the Governor's Council; (2) survey dates; (3) grant dates; (4) chain of title on conveyances or inheritances; and (5) names of other inhabitants who are a witness or signee for the grantee.

Looking for proof of which Joseph Attaway in SC and GA that was father of my William (also known brother David) who went to TN abt 1830 was married to Nicey Draper. Information I have on Joseph is that he was in Rev War at battle of Cowpens and was injured. I need his wife's name to separate the many Josephs located in this area at the time. I'm guessing he had to have been born between 1755 and 1765 to have been in that battle and that he died before 1850 census. I have several possible wives for the many Josephs, i.e. Jane Wilcox, Edith Nations,Goolspring Unknown.

Mary Ellen Attaway (b. 8/13/1890 Edgfield SC, d. 8/1/1956 Saluda SC)[d/o Nancy E.
Neally Dozier's World War I Draft Registration Card indicates that he was born in 1897, not 1895. While the SSDI indicates that his birth year was 1895, it wouldn't have been recorded until at least the 1930s. That makes the 1897 date somewhat more believable.

And while Neally was born in Saluda (according to the same card), he could have been in Aiken in 1910. While he should have been 13 in 1910, it's possible that whoever said that he was 9 (on the 1910 census) could have been unaware of his true age. It's very common for an age to be off by several years on a census.

The best way to identify his parents would be to obtain his SS-5 application from the Social Security Administration, since he appears in the Social Security Death Index.

Drew, this family is also somehow tied in to the George Wilbur Smith family. George Wilbur's son, Wilbur Stevenson Smith b. 9/6/11 (of Wilbur Smith Construction in Columbia) and James Milledge Smith, b. 1914, were my father's cousins. My father was born in 1912, so that fits. I never met them, or maybe I did, I can't remember. Milledge Smith worked at the Highway Department with my father in Greenville, SC when they were building I-85, and we may have gone to their house, but I was just a little girl, so I don't remember. Anyway, another avenue to pursue.

The bad news is that the Tillman Smith in the 1910 Edgefield County census is an 11-year-old African-American, so he can't be your great-grandfather, a white man born in 1827.

It would not be surprising that some records would show Edgefield, some Norris, and some Saluda, since Norris Township was originally in Edgefield County but became part of Saluda County when Saluda County was formed from Edgefield County.

In the 1860 census, 33-year-old T.W. (mis-indexed as "J.W." in the Ancestry.com index) Smith and 16-year-old Louisa appear in the Saluda Regiment, Edgefield District, and next to them are a 27-year-old W. and 17-year-old Frances Smith. Given the proximity and close ages, it's likely that T.W. and W. are brothers. If so, this may help us find T.W.'s parents.

In the 1850 census, 23-year-old Tillman Smith appears by himself, 2 households from the Deloache household (where 11-year-old Louisa is living). Between Tillman Smith and the Deloache household is the David and Hepsey Bodie household (David Bodie was my great-grandmother Jane Belle Bodie's first cousin).

David's mother was Laura Amanda Smith, born about 1802, which makes her a good age to be Tillman's aunt (making David and Tillman first cousins). But all I have is that Laura's father was James Smith, and I have no siblings for her.

On the other side of Tillman is the Peleriah and Epsey Williams family, which includes 17-year-old Warren Smith. This would fit to be the W. Smith living next door to Tillman 10 years later. According to the book "Edgefield County Marriages 1769-1880", Peleriah Williams was married to Epsey Asbill, daughter of Lewis Asbill.

So, it's likely that W. Smith and Warren Smith are the same person, who may be the brother of Tillman Smith, and either or both of them may be the nephew of Laura Amanda Smith Bodie (and the grandsons of James Smith).

Hello,

I'm searching for my Smith family.

Tillman w. Smith, b.1827 d. 1901 m. Louisa J. Deloach
children on 1880 census;
Chatty, 17
William S. 15
Simpson 12
Hillery W. 10
Pollard 6
Gary 3
Michael A. 1 (My grandfather)

Some records show Edgefield, some show Norris, some show Saluda, so I'm confused.

My grandfather, Michael A., married Cora Lee Lybrand of Batesburg. They had three children, Michael L, my father; Herbert G.(buried in Williston), and Daniel Webster (buried in Williston)

I've hit a brick wall on my ggrandfather, Tillman W. Smith. the "W" is probably for Webster, because we have a lot of that name passed down through our family, but maybe not.

He was still in Edgefield in 1910, but was living with the family of Jerry Johnson. There also an Annie Smith, 17, living in the household, but I have no idea who that could be.

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Im searching for any information on Ada Watson from Abbeville/Edgefield/Greenwood areas of SC. Ada's father and mother were William and Lizzie Watson and had many siblings. She is said to have traveled to Philadelphia on a regular basis along with her two daughters Evelyn and Edna Mae. She left behind two sons, one by name of George Smith(my grandfather b. 1919 d. 1990) in Abbeville Sc with his father Timothy Smith. And the other son was Maurice b. 1907 and last known location was in Augusta Ga in jail during the 1930's but was never heard from again. Ada possibly lived with a sister in Philadelphia by the name of Emma Chapel/Chappelle/Chapelle. I am able to tract Ada up until the 1920's and no more afterwards. It is believed that she died in or around 1945 shortly after her son George returned home from the war. Any help is appreciated!

African American Watsons

WARDs abt 1805

Need help with my WARDs who lived in what is now Saluda County when it was first formed.

Their plats & grants were recorded in Edgefield & Orangeburgh, however when my ancestors left, shortly after 1810, it was Saluda County. We visited their land. It is in what is now Saluda County.

My ancestors were Abdon Ward & Shadrack Ward. Shadrack is my 5th gr-grandfather. I'm totally a novice at dealing with stuff this old and in this area. I know he had the land platted in 1804. I know that he received the grant in 1806. His neighbors in 1804 were:
- William Taylor
- Nathan Norris
- George Watkins
- John Fairchild
- Dill (first name not shown)
- Friday (first name not shown)
His oldest daughter married Jeremiah Bolling (son of Benjamin Bolling). His daughter Phereby married Matthias Quattlebaum.

If anyone knows of the relationnships between any of these families, or has seen or heard the names Abdon Ward or Shadrack Ward, please write.
thank you,
Melanie Ward
