Looking for other descendants of the Hinkle/Henckel Family from Western South Carolina, Pendleton and Walhalla area. My GGG grandmother Sarah "Sallie" Hinkle, wife of George Asa Bradley Jr. was born in Western SC in 1784 and is described as a "Dutch" or Deutsch [German] girl. I want to see if there is a connection to John C. Henckel of the German Colonization society of Charleston. "Walhalla began as a settlement of German immigrants who left from Hamburg, Germany and Bavaria with some English, Scots and Irish who came over in the same ship. In particular, General John A. Wagener, Claus Bullwinkel, John C. Henckel, Jacob Schroder, and Christopher F. Seeba (trustees of the German Colonization Society of Charleston) bought 17,859 acres (72.27 km2) of land for $27,000 from Reverend Joseph Grisham of West Union on December 24, 1849." Source: 5.^ "The History of Walhalla". South Carolina.

I know that it is probably an impossible question, but I thought I would try. I know he is buried in the Justice Family Cemetery. The last information I received from someone down there, was that his daughter was still living in Mountain Rest.Hope someone can help, I would love to have a picture of him and would appreciate it so much..

Thank You.

OCONEE CEMETERY GPS PROJECT UPDATE

Recently, AERIAL VIEW enhancement links have been added to the following SC Cemetery GPS Project webpages.

http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/01-abbev...

http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/04-ander...

http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/23-green...

http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/30-laure...

http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/36-newbe...

http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/37-ocone...

http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/39-picke...

NOTE: This project cannot provide you with cemetery tombstone inscriptions.

In many counties, local Genealogical/Historical Societies have compiled Cemetery Survey Books that they have For-Sale. Normally, if survey books are available, the book's Surname Indexes will be available on-line for searching. This will give you the ability to determine what tombstone inscriptions each book contains.

1. Project’s MAP VIEW links will provide you with printable cemetery finding Road Maps.

2. Projects’ AERIAL VIEW links (NEW) will provide you with an overhead satellite view of the cemetery.

3. Google’s STREET VIEW will provide you with a view of the cemetery, as if you were standing on a nearby main road, and looking towards the cemetery.

This is a non-copyrighted project and you can reuse any of the on-line info as you see fit.

Paul Kankula

I also have a grandfather McJunkin from the upstate SC. I Know it's been awhile since your original post and don't know how much information you have found since then but... While looking for more information on Lucy Neville Mcjunkin I stumbled on to www.ourkinfolk I still have little to nothing on Lucy but (if this site is accurate) it has the McJunkins going back to Ireland and Scottland. Samuel Sumter McJunkin (1813-1907) has a brother and a son named Henry. Hope this helps.

Marriage and Birth Records

I am trying to trace an ancestor's earlier days in SC. He married a woman in 1887 born in SC to parents from Germany. They had two children, 1887 and 1889 before relocating to Washington D.C. before 1900; one child lists his birth place on his draft registration in 1918 as Walhalla, S.C. The father's name: Logan B. Abernethy; the wife and mother: Mary R. Leopold. Are marriage records available for the 1880 to 1888 period and also birth records for 1887 thru 1889 for this region?

There are often differences in birthdates between census and birth certificate records. The important thing is to look at multiple census records and follow the names of the family members. I think that the ones I posted are for your Sumpter/Sumter. Often a person did not know their actual birthday or yr. They did not need to keep up with them the way we do now. There was no social security numbers or anything like that. People who were dirt farmers didn't make enough money to pay taxes. The didn't celebrate birthdays the way we do now and when they had so many children unless the actual date was recorded in the family Bible it was often forgotten and they just tried to remember what was happening at the time in order to estimate a birthday i. e. were they planting or harvesting, was it hot weather or winter, that sort of thing. That's why finding a Bible record is so important in genealogy. Usually the parent recorded it soon after the birth of a child. Until the started requiring birth and death certificates there was no central records kept for those events. Some church records recorded the date of a christening or burial and weddings and those are good to find to estimate the year but I have not had much luck finding churches in the South with those kinds of records.

I've been searching for information on my J.B. Hunnicutt for years. Does this ring any bells for anyone? J.B. Hunnicutt on 1870 Seneca Township (Walhalla), Oconee County, South Carolina census: age 70. 1880 census, same location, J.B. is missing; Mary E. age 33 as head of household with children Martha E., James M., Dora E. (my greatgrandmother), Mary Esther, and Malinda Russell (Mary's mother).

Figure that Mary was J.B.'s second wife because of the age difference. In 1870 he listed as age 70, and she is age 25.

Does anyone have these names in their family?

Interesting ... I just received this via Oconee. We've been working as recently as today on Family Finder (autosomal DNA) matches to both HONEYCUTT and HUNNICUTT family members with some form of tie to our SMELSER and BEEMAN families also with early Oconee County ties ... SMELTZER MT. and SMELSER Creek are in Oconee County and later our George SMELSER (SMELTZER), seen in old Pendleton 1790 and 1800 moves to the St. Charles, Missouri area (and Edwardsville, Upper Alton and Woods River, Illinois). I'd be interested in comparing notes as well.

Seeking info on James Washington Harvey, Sr. (b. 25 May 1845 Virginia)and his wife Nancy L. (b. abt. 1849 in SC). James Harvey shows on census that his parents were both born in KY. Nancy shows her parents were both born in SC. I would like to know the parents of both James W. and Nancy L. They had two sons: James Washington Harvey, Jr. and John Pinkney Harvey. Later, James married Martha Shedd, and they had several children. Any help appreciated.
