See
http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Black_Heritage/There were 3-4 Patterson Plantations in Abbeville County. It's my understanding that the plantation owner's children migrated north to current day Anderson, Pickens & Oconee counties.
When the death of a Black took place in Oconee County, the Walhalla Newspaper added (Negro) after their name -- if, the info was sent to them by a Black Funeral Director. When Ann Rogers of Walhalla was compiling her BIG tombstone inscription database, she fortunately was able to add (Negro) for many of the Patterson burials. The Patterson burial listing can be found at

There appears to be many White Patterson decendants all over this upstate area. I know that there are several Pickens County researchers. I would contact Ann Sheriff at the OPD Genealogical Society's library at
claytonroom@swu.edu for further help.
Good Luck!
